Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of the study was to quantify inter-subject variability in the dependence of the medial-olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) on noise bandwidth. Of specific interest was whether inter-subject variability in MOCR dependence on bandwidth explained variability in the MOCR response elicited by wideband noise. DESIGN Thirty-two young adults with normal hearing participated in the study. Click-evoked otoacoustic emissions were measured in the ipsilateral ear with and without noise presented in the contralateral ear. Presentation of contralateral noise served to activate the MOCR. The MOCR was activated using five different noise stimuli with bandwidths ranging from 1- to 5-octaves wide (center frequency of 2 kHz; bandwidth incremented in 1-octave steps). Noise spectral levels (19.6 dB SPL/Hz) were held constant across all bandwidths. MOCR metrics included the normalized-percent change in the otoacoustic emission (OAE), the MOCR-induced OAE magnitude shift, and the MOCR-induced OAE phase shift. Linear mixed-effect models were fit to model the dependence of MOCR-induced OAE magnitude and phase changes on noise bandwidth. The use of a mixed-effect modeling approach allowed for the estimation of subject-specific model parameters that capture on- and off-frequency contributions to the MOCR effects. Regression analysis was performed to evaluate the predictive capacity of subject-specific model parameters on the MOCR response elicited by wideband noise. RESULTS All OAE-based MOCR metrics increased as the noise bandwidth increased from 1- to 5-octaves wide. The dependence of MOCR-induced OAE magnitude and phase shifts on activator bandwidth was well approximated using a linear model with intercept and slope terms. On average, MOCR-induced magnitude and phase shifts increased at a rate of 0.3 dB/octave and 0.01 cycles/octave, respectively, as bandwidth extended beyond the predicted region of OAE generation. A statistically significant random effect of subject was found for both the intercept and slope parameter of each model. Subject-specific slope estimates were statistically significant predictors of a repeated measure of the wideband MOCR response. A higher slope was predictive of larger wideband MOCR effects. CONCLUSIONS MOCR-induced changes to the OAE are greatest when the MOCR is elicited using wideband noise. Variability in the process of spectral integration within the MOCR pathway appears to explain, in part, inter-subject variability in OAE-based estimates of the MOCR response elicited by wideband noise.

Abstract
Aims First, to discuss sex differences in auditory function between women and men, and whether cyclic fluctuations in levels of female sex hormones (i.e., estradiol and progesterone) affect auditory function in pre-menopausal and post-menopausal women. Second, to systematically review the literature concerning the discussed patterns in order to give an overview of the methodologies used in research. Last, to identify the gap in knowledge and to make recommendations for future work. Methods for the systematic review Population, Exposure, Control, Outcome and Study design (PECOS) criteria were used in developing the review questions. The review protocol follows the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and was pre-registered in the Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO; CRD42020201480). Data Sources: EMBASE, PubMed, MEDLINE (Ovid), PsycINFO, ComDisDome, CINAHL, Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) via Cochrane Library, and scanning reference lists of relevant studies, and internet resources (i.e., Mendeley) were used. Only studies published between 1999 and 2022, in English, or in English translation, were included. The quality of evidence was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). Results Sex differences: Women had more sensitive hearing (measured at the level of peripheral and central auditory system) than men. Cyclic fluctuations: Auditory function in women fluctuated during the menstrual cycle, while no such fluctuations in men over the same time period were reported. Hearing sensitivity improved in women during the late follicular phase, and decrease during the luteal phase, implying an effect of female sex hormones, although the specific effects of estradiol and progesterone fluctuations on the central auditory system remain unclear. Hearing sensitivity in women declined rapidly at the onset of menopause. Conclusion The review has shown the following. Consistent sex differences exist in auditory function across the auditory pathway with pre-menopausal women often showing better function than age-matched men. Moreover, pre-menopausal women show fluctuations in hearing function across the menstrual cycle with a better function during the peak of estradiol or when the ratio of estradiol to progesterone is high. Third, menopause marks the onset of hearing loss in women, characterized by a rapid decline in hearing sensitivity and a more pronounced loss than in age-matched men. Finally, the systematic review highlights the need for well-designed and -controlled studies to evaluate the influence of estradiol and progesterone on hearing by consistently including control groups (e.g., age-matched man), using objective tests to measure hormonal levels (e.g., in saliva or blood), and by testing participants at different points across the menstrual cycle. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Analyze the inhibitory effect of contralateral noise on transient otoacoustic emissions in infants with congenital syphilis (CS). METHODS Cross-sectional study, approved by the Research Ethics Committee n° 3.360.991. Infants with treated CS at birth and infants without risk indicators for hearing impairment were selected. Both groups had the waves I, III and V presence at 80 dB nHL with click BAEP and the presence of response in the nonlinear TEOAEs at 80 dB NPS bilaterally. For suppression, TEOAE were analyzed without the contralateral noise, with the linear stimulus at 60 dB SPL. The neonates who presented a response in three frequencies per ear performed the second TEOAE collection with the contralateral white noise at an intensity of 60 dB SPL. Inferential analysis were performed using the Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon test, adopting a significance level p < 0.05. RESULTS The sample consisted of 30 subjects divided into two groups, the Study Group (SG), consisting of 16 infants, and the Control Group (CG), consisting of 14 infants with no risk indicators for hearing loss. No differences were observed between the groups and the inhibition values, in the SG 30.8% presented inhibition and 25% for the CG in the right ear, in the left ear it was 46.7% in the SG and 38.5% in the CG. The SG demonstrated greater inhibition in the RE for the frequency bands from 1.5 to 4 KHz. CONCLUSIONS The analyses adopted in this study point out that the inhibitory effect of contralateral noise on TEOAEs in infants with CS does not differ from infants without risk indicators for hearing loss.

Abstract
PURPOSE The current study aims to evaluate gender variations in the efferent auditory system functioning in the ANSD population and compare them to normal hearing persons using contralateral suppression of spontaneous OAE (SOAEs). METHODS For the current study, a total of 54 ears were considered prospectively. 27 ears with normal hearing (NH) sensitivity were in group I, while 27 ears with ANSD were in group II. All of the subjects had a regular audiological examination followed by synchronised SOAE recordings with and without broadband noise (in the contralateral ear) at 50 dB SPL and statistical analysis was carried out. RESULTS Wilcoxon signed rank test revealed a significant decrease in SOAE amplitude with contralateral noise stimulation in NH, while no such trend was observed in ANSD. However, contralateral SOAE stimulation resulted in significant high-frequency shifts for both the ANSD and NH groups in the noise condition. In the comparison of gender effects on SOAE amplitude and frequency shifts using Mann-Whitney, no significant gender differences were seen. The lack of gender differences in SOAE suppression is explained based on global standing wave theory and local oscillator theory. CONCLUSIONS Contralateral effect of noise on SOAE shows frequency shifts, but not amplitude shifts both of which are not affected by gender effects.

Abstract
The medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR), usually assessed by the inhibition of transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) with contralateral noise, is a very small effect. In understanding the origin of the MOCR, it is crucial to obtain data of the highest accuracy, i.e., with a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), which in turn largely depends on the number of signal averages. This study investigates how the reliability of MOCR measures is affected by the number of averages. At the same time, the effect of the presence of synchronized spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SSOAEs) is taken into account, as it is known that this factor significantly affects TEOAE amplitudes and SNRs. Each recording session consisted of two series of four measurements, allowing comparison of MOCR magnitude based on 250, 500, 750, and 1000 averages. Reliability was based on comparing the two series. The results show that, for a good quality MOCR measure (i.e., intraclass correlation above 0.9), the required number of averages is at least double that obtainable from a standard TEOAE test (i.e., 500 compared to 250). Ears without SSOAEs needed a higher number of averages to reach a correlation of 0.9 than ears with SSOAEs.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to measure the variability of transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) and the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) over a long period of time in one person. TEOAEs with and without contralateral acoustic stimulation (CAS) by white noise were measured, from which MOCR strength could be derived as either a dB or % change. In this longitudinal case study, measurements were performed on the right and left ears of a young, normally hearing adult female once a week for 1 year. The results showed that TEOAE level and MOCR strength fluctuated over the year but tended to remain close to a baseline level, with standard deviations of around 0.5 dB and 0.05 dB, respectively. The TEOAE latencies at frequencies from 1 to 4 kHz were relatively stable, with maximum changes ranging from 0.5 ms for the 1 kHz band to 0.08 ms for the 4 kHz band. TEOAE levels and MOCR strengths were strongly and negatively correlated, meaning that the higher the TEOAE level, the lower the MOCR. Additionally, comparison of fluctuations between the ears revealed positive correlation, i.e., the higher the TEOAE level or MOCR in one ear, the higher in the second ear.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A standard method and parameter study were performed for the contralateral suppression test. PURPOSE Our study aimed to determine the contralateral transient-evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE) suppression test method and stimulus-noise parameters that have a standard procedure and will enable the efferent system to be easily evaluated in clinics. RESEARCH DESIGN This study was conducted in two parts with two different groups of participants as a within-subjects design. In the first part, the signal-to-noise ratio at which maximum suppression obtained was investigated with 29 participants. In the second part, the optimal contralateral noise presentation method (in terms of noise-time or noise-sweep) was examined with 21 participants. STUDY SAMPLE In the first part 29 young adults aged between 18 and 32 (23.03 ± 2.84), 20 females and 9 males, and in the second part 21 young adults aged between 19 and 34 years (mean age: 23.71 ± 3.48 years), 16 females and 5 males, participated in the second part. All participants had normal hearing. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS To obtain maximum OAE suppression, different parameters were tested with the Otodynamics ILO292-II OAE device at both parts of the study in a double-walled audiometric test booths. Multirepeated analysis of variance, pairwise comparison, Friedman test, and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS In the first part, maximum suppression was achieved at 65 dB peSPL (decibel peak-equivalent sound pressure level) TEOAE stimulus and 65 dB SPL broadband noise. In the second part, maximum suppression was obtained in noise-time method with 30 seconds "duration." CONCLUSIONS To provide standardization in clinics, it can be recommended that the contralateral suppression of OAEs was measured at 65 dB peSPL TEOAE stimulus and 65 dB SPL broadband noise in the linear stimulation mode with Otodynamics ILO 292-II double-probe OAE device. To obtain maximum suppression, the noise-time method with 30 seconds duration can be used.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the reliability of the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) between men and women. The strength of the MOCR was measured in terms of the suppression of transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) by contralateral acoustic stimulation (CAS). The difference between TEOAEs with and without CAS (white noise) was calculated as raw decibel TEOAE suppression as well as normalized TEOAE suppression expressed in percent. In each subject, sets of measurements were performed twice. Reliability was evaluated by calculating the intraclass correlation coefficient, the standard error of measurement, and the minimum detectable change (MDC). The study included 40 normally hearing subjects (20 men; 20 women). The estimates of MOCR for both genders were similar. Nevertheless, the reliability of the MOCR was poorer in men, with an MDC around twice that of women. This can be only partially attributed to slightly lower signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) in men, since we used strict procedures calling for high SNRs (around 20 dB on average). Furthermore, even when we compared subgroups with similar SNRs, there was still lower MOCR reliability in men.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The function of the medial olivocochlear system can be evaluated by measuring the suppression of otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) by contralateral stimulation. One of the obstacles preventing the clinical use of the OAE suppression is that it has considerable variability across subjects. One feature that tends to differentiate subjects is the presence or absence of spontaneous OAEs (SOAEs). The purpose of the present study was to investigate the reliability of contralateral suppression of transiently evoked OAEs (TEOAEs) measured using a commercial device in ears with and without SOAEs. DESIGN OAEs were recorded in a group of 60 women with normal hearing. TEOAEs were recorded with a linear protocol (identical stimuli), a constant stimulus level of 65 dB peSPL, and contralateral broadband noise (60 dB SPL) as a suppressor. Each recording session consisted of three measurements: the first two were made consecutively without taking out the probe (the "no refit" condition); the third measurement was made after taking out and refitting the probe (a "refit" condition). Global (for the whole signal) and half-octave band values of TEOAE response levels, signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), raw dB TEOAE suppression, and normalized TEOAE suppression, and latency were investigated. Each subject was tested for the presence of SOAEs using the synchronized SOAE (SSOAE) technique. Reliability was evaluated by calculating the intraclass correlation coefficient, standard error of measurement (SEM) and minimum detectable change. RESULTS The TEOAE suppression was higher in ears with SSOAEs in terms of normalized percentages. However, when calculated in terms of decibels, the effect was not significant. The reliability of the TEOAE suppression as assessed by SEM was similar for ears with and without SSOAEs. The SEM for the whole dataset (with and without SSOAEs) was 0.08 dB for the no-refit condition and 0.13 dB for the refit condition (equivalent to 1.6% and 2.2%, respectively). SEMs were higher for half-octave bands than for global values. TEOAE SNRs were higher in ears with SSOAEs. CONCLUSIONS The effect of SSOAEs on reliability of the TEOAE suppression remains complicated. On the one hand, we found that higher SNRs generally provide lower variability of calculated suppressions, and that the presence of SSOAEs favors high SNRs. On the other hand, reliability estimates were not much different between ears with and without SSOAEs. Therefore, in a clinical setting, the presence of SOAEs does not seem to have an effect on suppression measures, at least when testing involves measuring global or half-octave band response levels.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to compare the integrity of the efferent auditory pathways of newborns that had high hyperbilirubinemia levels and required treatment due to these and healthy newborns. METHODS Term-born (37 weeks or later) infants that were brought to the Newborn Polyclinic of the Başkent University Hospital were included in the study. The study included a total of 84 infants including healthy newborns (n = 42) and those that had jaundice and were receiving phototherapy (n = 42). After conducting a general otorhinolaryngology examination on all newborns included in the study, Transient Otoacoustic Emission (TEOAE) test was carried out in the absence and presence of contralateral noise. The obtained contralateral suppression values were compared between the two groups. RESULTS In the TEOAE test, the responses obtained at 1 kHz in the newborns receiving phototherapy were found to be lower. The difference between the groups was significant (p = 0.038). The rates of suppression presence at 2 kHz, 2.8 kHz and total OAE were found significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the group not receiving phototherapy. Among the phototherapy-receiving infants, the hyperbilirubinemia levels of the infants in whom suppression was obtained in the contralateral suppression test did not show a statistically significant difference in comparison to those in whom suppression was not obtained (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION Based on the obtained data, hyperbilirubinemia may have a disruptive effect on the efferent auditory system in newborns. Consequently, we are of the opinion that, in addition to hearing screening in risky newborn infants, a MOC suppression test would be useful.

Abstract
Purposes The aims of this study are (a) to characterize the hearing of adolescents from four schools of Córdoba, Argentina, through the analysis of conventional and extended high-frequency audiometric thresholds and otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) and (b) to analyze the association between the mentioned hearing tests and exposure to music. Method It was a cross-sectional correlational descriptive study. Hearing thresholds (250-16000 Hz), transient evoked OAEs, and distortion product OAEs were evaluated in 225 adolescents (450 ears) aged 14 and 15 years. The ears were split into two groups: Group 1 had thresholds ≤ 21 dB HL in all frequencies, and Group 2 had thresholds > 21 dB HL in at least one. Exposure to music was evaluated through a questionnaire. Results Statistically significant differences were found in both ears between Groups 1 and 2. A notch at 3000-6000 Hz was noted in both groups. Group 2 showed a progressive threshold increase from 9000 Hz. Amplitude decrease, negative values, absent distortion product OAEs, and transient evoked OAEs were noted even in Group 1. A statistically significant association between Groups 1 and 2 and the presence/absence of OAEs was observed in most frequencies. Ears with moderate or high exposure to music had greater hearing thresholds compared to ears with low exposure at most frequencies; this was more evident in Group 1. Regarding exposure to music and OAEs, no significant differences were found between the exposure categories. Conclusions The findings highlight the value of implementing hearing conservation programs in Argentina, analyzing hearing tests correlated with questionnaires about recreational noise exposure in order to detect vulnerable ears early.

Abstract
The medial olivocochlear (MOC) system is thought to be responsible for modulation of peripheral hearing through descending (efferent) pathways. This study investigated the connection between peripheral hearing function and conscious attention during two different modality tasks, auditory and visual. Peripheral hearing function was evaluated by analyzing the amount of suppression of otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) by contralateral acoustic stimulation (CAS), a well-known effect of the MOC. Simultaneously, attention was evaluated by event-related potentials (ERPs). Although the ERPs showed clear differences in processing of auditory and visual tasks, there were no differences in the levels of OAE suppression. We also analyzed OAEs for the highest magnitude resonant mode signal detected by the matching pursuit method, but again did not find a significant effect of task, and no difference in noise level or number of rejected trials. However, for auditory tasks, the amplitude of the P3 cognitive wave negatively correlated with the level of OAE suppression. We conclude that there seems to be no change in MOC function when performing different modality tasks, although the cortex still remains able to modulate some aspects of MOC activity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of the study was to determine the reliability in children of the medial olivocochlear reflex when measured as decibels of suppression of transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) by contralateral acoustic stimulation (CAS). DESIGN TEOAEs with and without CAS (white noise) were measured. In each subject, measurements were performed twice. Of particular interest was the suppression of TEOAEs by CAS and its reliability. Reliability was evaluated by calculating the standard error of measurement (SEM) and minimum detectable change (MDC). STUDY SAMPLE Fifty-one normally hearing girls aged 3-6 years. RESULTS The average global TEOAE suppression was around 0.6 dB. The highest reliability was for global values, with SEM of 0.2 dB and MDC of ±0.55 dB for the standard 2.5-20 ms recording window and slightly higher values for an 8-18 ms window. The worst reliability in the studied group was for the 1 kHz half-octave frequency band. Additionally, ears without spontaneous otoacoustic emissions had higher suppression levels than those with, but they also had lower signal-to-noise ratios, which may limit their clinical utility. CONCLUSIONS The current study shows that, under the studied paradigm, TEOAE suppression does not have satisfactory reliability since MDC was similar to the level of suppression.

Abstract
The descending corticofugal fibers originate from the auditory cortex and exert control on the periphery via the olivocochlear efferents. Medial efferents are thought to enhance the discriminability of transient sounds in background noise. In addition, the observation of deleterious long-term effects of efferent sectioning on the response properties of auditory nerve fibers in neonatal cats supports an efferent-mediated control of normal development. However, the role of the efferent system in human hearing remains unclear. The objective of the present study was to test the hypothesis that the medial efferents are involved in the development of frequency discrimination in noise. The hypothesis was examined with a combined behavioral and physiological approach. Frequency discrimination in noise and efferent inhibition were measured in 5- to 12-yr-old children (n = 127) and young adults (n = 37). Medial efferent strength was noninvasively assayed with a rigorous otoacoustic emission protocol. Results revealed an age-mediated relationship between efferent inhibition and frequency discrimination in noise. Efferent inhibition strongly predicted frequency discrimination in noise for younger children (5-9 yr). However, for older children (>9 yr) and adults, efferent inhibition was not related to frequency discrimination in noise. These findings support the role of efferents in the development of hearing-in-noise in humans; specifically, younger children compared with older children and adults are relatively more dependent on efferent inhibition for extracting relevant cues in noise. Additionally, the present findings caution against postulating an oversimplified relationship between efferent inhibition and measures of auditory perception in humans.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Despite several decades of research, the functional role of medial olivocochlear efferents in humans remains controversial and is thought to be insignificant. Here it is shown that medial efferent inhibition strongly predicts frequency discrimination in noise for younger children but not for older children and adults. Young children are relatively more dependent on the efferent system for listening-in-noise. This study highlights the role of the efferent system in hearing-in-noise during childhood development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Contralateral suppression of otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) may serve as an index of the medial olivocochlear (MOC) reflex. To date, this index has been studied in various populations but never in pre-school children. The purpose of this study was to fill this gap and describe how the MOC reflex affects the properties of transiently evoked OAEs (TEOAEs) in this age group. In addition, the influence of the presence of spontaneous OAEs (SOAEs) in the studied ear on the suppression of TEOAEs was also investigated. METHODS TEOAEs with and without contralateral acoustic stimulation (CAS) by white noise were measured in 126 normally hearing pre-school children aged 3-6 years. The values of response levels, suppression by CAS, and signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of TEOAEs were investigated for the whole signal (global) and for half-octave frequency bands from 1 to 4 kHz. Only ears with SNR >6 dB were used in the analyses. SOAEs were acquired using the so-called synchronized SOAEs (SSOAEs) technique. RESULTS Ears with SSOAEs had higher response levels and SNRs than ears without SSOAEs, and suppression was lower (0.58 dB compared to 0.85 dB). Only 22% of all studied ears had an SNR >20 dB, a level recommended in some studies for measuring suppression. There were no significant effects of age or gender on TEOAE suppression. CONCLUSIONS Suppression levels for pre-school children did not differ appreciably from those of adults measured under similar conditions in other studies. Taken together with no effect of age in the data studied here, it seems that there is no effect of age on TEOAE suppression. However, we did find that the presence of SSOAEs had an effect on TEOAE suppression, a finding which has not been reported in earlier studies on different populations. We suggest that the presence of SSOAEs might be a crucial factor related to MOC function.

Abstract
The medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent system modifies cochlear output to aid signal detection in noise, but the precise role of efferents in speech-in-noise understanding remains unclear. The current study examined the contribution of the MOC reflex for speech recognition in noise in 30 normal-hearing young adults (27 females, mean age = 22.7 yr). The MOC reflex was assessed using contralateral inhibition of transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions. Speech-in-noise perception was evaluated using the coordinate response measure presented in ipsilateral speech-shaped noise at signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) ranging from -12 to 0 dB. Performance was assessed without and with the presence of contralateral noise to activate the MOC reflex. Performance was significantly better with contralateral noise only at the lowest SNR. There was a trend of better performance with increasing contralateral inhibition at the lowest SNR. Threshold of the psychometric function was significantly correlated with contralateral inhibition. Response time on the speech task was not significantly correlated with contralateral inhibition. Results suggest that the MOC reflex contributes to listening in low SNRs and the relationship between the MOC reflex and perception is highly dependent upon the task characteristics.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of short-term noise exposure on audiometric thresholds, distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), and electrocochleography (ECochG) as a function of ear and sex. Method Preexposure and postexposure measures of audiometric thresholds, DPOAEs, and ECochG indices were examined. Sixteen male and 16 female adults participated. Participants were exposed to a 2000-Hz narrowband noise presented at 105 dBA for 10 min. Results Following noise exposure, significantly ( p < .0001) larger auditory threshold differences were observed for left ears. Larger auditory threshold differences were also observed for 3000 and 4000 Hz versus 2000 and 6000 Hz. DPOAE absolute amplitude differences increased with decreasing L 1, L 2 level ( p < .0001). DPOAE absolute amplitude differences also significantly rose with increasing f2 frequencies ( p < .0001). Females generally had larger DPOAE absolute amplitude differences than males ( p < .05). Summating potential amplitudes were significantly larger for female left ears following noise exposure ( p = .03). Left-ear summating potential/action potential amplitude ratios and summating potential/action potential area ratios were increased following noise exposure ( p < .05). Conclusions Utilizing a test battery to examine the effects of short-term noise exposure can reveal the functional status of different structures in the cochlea. There appears to be a susceptibility of the left ear to short-term loud noise exposure. Findings with respect to a sex susceptibility to short-term loud noise exposure were not strong, as sex differences were only observed for a subset of the conditions.
