Implementation of net energy evaluating system in laying hens: Validation by performance and egg quality

Three experiments were conducted to determine the effect of different dietary net energy (NE) and AMEn ratios (NE:AMEn) on performance, egg quality, and heat production (HP) in laying hens. In experiment 1, 62 Hy-Line Brown hens were fed 2 treatments with 31 replicates from 44 to 54 wk of age. In experiment 2, 600 hens of the same strain were fed 3 treatments from 22 to 42 wk of age with 10 replicates. Both used a completely randomized design. Diets were based on corn, wheat, wheat bran, barley, soybean meal, canola meal, meat and bone meal, and canola oil. In both experiments, the NE:AMEn ratio of diets was increased with higher oil inclusion compared with T1 controls. The AMEn (kcal/kg), NE (kcal/kg), ether extract (g/kg), and CP (g/kg), respectively, on a DM basis in experiment 1 was T1: 3,011, 2,288, 42, 202 and T2: 3,023, 2,374, 81, 203; and in experiment 2, T1: 3,026, 2,324, 25, 187; T2: 2,949, 2,315, 61, 185; and T3: 3,026, 2,397, 73, 181. Increasing the ratio of NE:AMEn decreased feed intake (P < 0.001) and increased egg mass (P < 0.05) in experiment 2 and increased egg weight (P < 0.01), decreased feed conversion ratio (P < 0.01), increased egg albumen % (P < 0.001), and decreased yolk % (P < 0.05) and shell % (P < 0.05) compared with T1 controls in both experiments. Haugh units and yolk color scores were increased with high NE:AMEn in both experiments (P < 0.001; P < 0.01). Experiment 3 was conducted in calorimetry chambers to measure HP in birds fed experiment 2 diets. Increasing the NE:AMEn increased total retained energy (RE), RE as fat, and RE in the body (kcal/kg BW^0.75/D) and NE:AME. The results indicate that using oil to increase the NE:AMEn results in improved performance and egg quality and more efficient energy utilization.

Effects of dietary glycerol monolaurate on productive performance, egg quality, serum biochemical indices, and intestinal morphology of laying hens

Glycerol monolaurate (GML) has been widely used as an effective antibacterial emulsifier in the food industry. A total of 360 44-week-old Hy-Line brown laying hens were randomly distributed into four groups each with six replicates of 15 birds, and fed with corn-soybean-meal-based diets supplemented with 0, 0.15, 0.30, and 0.45 g/kg GML, respectively. Our results showed that 0.15, 0.30, and 0.45 g/kg GML treatments significantly decreased feed conversion ratios (FCRs) by 2.65%, 7.08%, and 3.54%, respectively, and significantly increased the laying rates and average egg weights. For egg quality, GML drastically increased albumen height and Haugh units, and enhanced yolk color. Notably, GML increased the concentrations of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids and reduced the concentration of total saturated fatty acids in the yolk. The albumen composition was also significantly modified, with an increase of 1.02% in total protein content, and increased contents of His (4.55%) and Glu (2.02%) under the 0.30 g/kg GML treatment. Additionally, GML treatments had positive effects on the lipid metabolism of laying hens, including lowering the serum triglyceride and total cholesterol levels and reducing fat deposition in abdominal adipose tissue. Intestinal morphology was also improved by GML treatment, with increased villus length and villus height to crypt depth ratio. Our data demonstrated that GML supplementation of laying hens could have beneficial effects on both their productivity and physiological properties, which indicates the potential application of GML as a functional feed additive and gives us a new insight into this traditional food additive.

Níveis de metionina + cistina digestíveis em rações para poedeiras no pico de produção

Avaliaram-se os efeitos de níveis de aminoácidos sulfurados digestíveis (AASD) sobre o desempenho e a qualidade interna e externa de ovos de 360 poedeiras de 25 a 41 semanas de idade. Foram formuladas seis dietas experimentais: cinco continham 0,578; 0,636; 0,694; 0,752 ou 0,810% de AASD, e em uma o nível de AASD foi o usualmente recomendado, cada tratamento com cinco repetições de 12 aves, em quatro períodos de avaliação de 28 dias cada. Melhores resultados para produção de ovos, conversão alimentar, massa de ovos e ovos viáveis foram obtidos com as aves que consumiram 729; 751; 801 e 730mg AASD/dia, respectivamente. A elevação dos níveis de AASD resultou em aumentos lineares no consumo de ração, no ganho de peso, nas porcentagens de gema e no extrato etéreo na gema. Nos ovos armazenados por sete dias, houve aumento linear da porcentagem de gema e decréscimo linear da porcentagem de casca, unidade Haugh e peso específico com a elevação dos níveis de AASD. Conclui-se que, para melhores produção e qualidade interna e externa de ovos, é necessário o consumo de 752mg de AASD ou de 864mg de aminoácidos sulfurados totais por ave/dia.

Comparison of amino acid digestibility determined prececally or based on total excretion of cecectomized laying hens

This study investigated the possibility of using cecectomized laying hens for the determination of amino acid (AA) digestibility of protein sources as an alternative to measurements made at the terminal ileum. Toasted soybeans and corn gluten meal were used as test protein sources. A low-protein basal diet was based mainly on corn, wheat gluten, and cornstarch. In 4 other diets toasted soybeans or corn gluten meal were included each at 15% or 30% at the expense of cornstarch, so that the changes in the AA concentrations of the diets resulted from the protein sources only. Titanium dioxide was used as the indigestible marker. In experiment 1, two hundred ten 18-wk-old pullets were used. Digesta from the posterior 2-thirds of the intestine between Meckel's diverticulum and 2 cm anterior to the ileo-ceca-colonic junction was obtained from killed hens. In experiment 2, fourteen cecectomized hens were used. They were kept individually, and excreta were quantitatively collected. The apparent digestibility of AA was calculated for each diet. Linear regression analysis was used to calculate AA digestibility for the 2 protein sources. Across all diets, apparent AA digestibility was significantly higher in experiment 2 than in experiment 1. However, AA digestibilities of the 2 protein sources were not different between both experiments. Differences in AA digestibility between the protein sources were not significant in experiment 1, but in experiment 2 significant differences between the protein sources were detected for some AA due to a lower standard error of estimate. It was concluded that AA digestibility of protein sources for laying hens can be evaluated based on quantitative excreta collection with cecectomized hens using the regression approach. This needs fewer animals than the determination of digestibility at the terminal ileum. Differences between protein sources are easier to detect because of the lower standard error of estimate.

Effect of ileum segment and protein sources on net disappearance of crude protein and amino acids in laying hens

1. This study investigated the net disappearance of crude protein (CP) and amino acids (AA) from soybean meal and rapeseed meal in different sub-sections of the ileum of hens. A basal diet was used and in another 4 diets, maize starch contained in the basal diet was replaced with soybean meal or rapeseed meal at 140 and 280 g/kg so that changes in dietary AA concentrations resulted from the oilseed meals only. 2. A total of 250 Lohmann Brown pullets were used for this experiment at 20 weeks old and given one of the 5 diets for 7 d. The section between Meckel's diverticulum and 2 cm anterior to the ileo-caecal-colonic junction was taken after slaughtering the hens and cut into three sub-sections of equal length. Digesta were taken separately from each sub-section and then frozen. Net disappearance of AA and CP for the diets and the two protein sources was calculated based on standard equations and using a multiple linear regression approach. 3. Net disappearances of CP and all AA were significantly lower in the proximal sub-section than in the central and terminal sub-sections. Also, the net disappearance of CP and all AA from rapeseed meal was significantly lower in the proximal sub-section than in the central or terminal sub-sections. For soybean meal, only the net disappearances of arginine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid and phenylalanine were significantly lower in the proximal than in the terminal sub-section. No significant differences in the net disappearance of CP and AA were detected between protein sources within the central and terminal sub-sections or between the central and terminal sub-section within each protein source. Soybean meal had a significantly higher net disappearance of CP and AA (with the exception of cystine and methionine) than rapeseed meal in the proximal sub-section but these differences were not statistically significant in the central and terminal sub-sections. 4. Amino acids disappeared from the proximal region of the ileum. This needs consideration in standard approaches that are used for measuring AA digestibility. There is a variation in AA digestibility between soybean meal and rapeseed meal. The ranking of individual AA regarding their digestibility is different between the two oilseed meals.
