"I Really Felt the Feeling": A Systematic Review and Qualitative Thematic Synthesis of Healthcare Workers' Experiences of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Training

Purpose: Existing research suggests that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) training is beneficial for healthcare workers' professional practice and personal well-being. This review aimed to further understanding of healthcare workers' experiences of ACT training by synthesizing existing qualitative studies.Methods: A systematic literature review identified papers published up until April 2022 using the Embase, Ovid MEDLINE, and PsycINFO databases as well as relevant studies within the gray literature. Nine studies were included in the review, which were analyzed using Thematic Synthesis (Thomas & Harden, 2008).Results: Three analytical themes were identified through the thematic synthesis: I am both the patient and the professional; a powerful and empowering experience; and it is not always comfortable.Conclusion: This review has highlighted the importance of experiential learning. The training was a powerful experience for staff, but as such, it was not always comfortable. Recommendations for the future delivery of ACT training are made.

Teaching Self-Care Through Mindfulness Practices: The Application of Yoga, Meditation, and Qigong to Counselor Training

Faculty in counseling training programs often give voice to the importance of self-care for students during the training period and into practice after training is completed. However, few programs specifically address this issue in their curricula. To address this perceived need, a course was developed to provide students with (a) personal growth opportunities through self-care practices and (b) professional growth through mindfulness practices in counseling that can help prevent burnout. A focus group assessed course impact on students who reported significant changes in their personal lives, stress levels, and clinical training.

Does Compassion-Focused Therapy Training for Health Care Educators and Providers Increase Self-Compassion and Reduce Self-Persecution and Self-Criticism?

INTRODUCTION

There is a growing body of evidence within the health care community suggesting that developing feelings of compassion can profoundly affect physical and psychological health. This is an important area of work, and initial research with nonprofessional groups has found that practicing compassion through a variety of experiential practices and meditations can lead to higher levels of compassion for others, sensitivity to suffering, motivation to help, and altruism. This study examines outcome measures after a 3-day introductory workshop on compassion-focused therapy provided to health care providers and educators. The aim of the research is to explore whether the training would increase self-compassion and reduce self-criticism and self-persecution.

METHODS

A total of 28 participants who were classified into three groups "nurses and midwives," "counselors/psychotherapists," and "other health care providers" completed the Self-Compassion Scale and Functions of Self-Criticizing and Self-Attacking Scale before and after training.

RESULTS

Results reveal an overall statistically significant increase in self-compassion and statistically significant reduction in self-critical judgment after training. There was no statistically significant reduction in self-persecution or self-correction scores after training.

DISCUSSION

Developing self-compassion and compassionately responding to our own "self-critic" may lead the way forward in the development of more compassionate care among health care professionals. Training people in compassion-based exercises may bring changes in levels of self-compassion and self-critical judgment. The findings are exciting in that they suggest the potential benefits of training health care providers and educators in compassion-focused practices.

Mindfulness, self-compassion, and empathy among health care professionals: a review of the literature

The relationship between mindfulness and self-compassion is explored in the health care literature, with a corollary emphasis on reducing stress in health care workers and providing compassionate patient care. Health care professionals are particularly vulnerable to stress overload and compassion fatigue due to an emotionally exhausting environment. Compassion fatigue among caregivers in turn has been associated with less effective delivery of care. Having compassion for others entails self-compassion. In Kristin Neff's research, self-compassion includes self-kindness, a sense of common humanity, and mindfulness. Both mindfulness and self-compassion involve promoting an attitude of curiosity and nonjudgment towards one's experiences. Research suggests that mindfulness interventions, particularly those with an added lovingkindness component, have the potential to increase self-compassion among health care workers. Enhancing focus on developing self-compassion using MBSR and other mindfulness interventions for health care workers holds promise for reducing perceived stress and increasing effectiveness of clinical care.

Mindfulness in occupational therapy education

ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to explore the value of mindfulness and its role in occupational therapy education. The plethora of research on mindfulness-based stress reduction programs has shown consistent and positive results to enhance quality of life in clinical and nonclinical populations. Offering students the opportunities to learn and experience mindfulness could lead to enhanced self-awareness and care, focus and empathy, and a decrease of client judgment enhancing the success of clinical interventions.

Team-based learning: a practical guide: Guide Supplement 65.1--viewpoint 1

The practical aspects and potential benefits of team-based learning (TBL) are outlined on the recent guide published by Parmelee et al. (2012). TBL provides a strategy for active student-centred collaborative learning which involves multiple small groups in a single classroom setting, incorporating many of the adult approaches to learning, more frequently seen in problem-based learning (PBL). A single teacher who is a content-expert, who need not have any experience in the group processes to deliver a successful session, instructs the student groups. Unlike PBL and traditional small group learning, TBL provides opportunities to hold each student accountable for their own performance and their individual contributions to the team (Parmelee et al. 2012). A limited search of 'PubMed' revealed that TBL is being used and evaluated internationally as an educational strategy, with virtually no published papers on TBL from the UK. This may suggest either little current interest on the use of TBL by UK medical educators or that the UK is currently not contributing a great deal to the literature on TBL. There may be a need to research the effectiveness and outcomes of TBL in a UK context of medical education.

Perceptions of the Long-Term Influence of Mindfulness Training on Counselors and Psychotherapists

Although self-care is often touted as being important to counselors and psychotherapists, historically little has been done within graduate school to provide future therapists with self-care strategies. This article proposes that mindfulness training offers a promising approach to therapist self-care and introduces qualitative research on the long-term impact of mindfulness training to substantiate this claim. Sixteen former students who are now practicing counselors were interviewed. Thirteen of them reported continuing to practice mindfulness techniques. Participants indicated that mindfulness continued to influence both their personal lives and self-care practices leading to positive influences in physical, emotional, cognitive, and interpersonal well-being. In their professional lives, participants described ways of incorporating mindfulness into their way of being a therapist, their interventions, and how they conceptualize their clients’ issues.
