Abstract
Objectives The aim of this study was to monitor rotavirus (RV) infections in adults >18 years with acute gastroenteritis during 2004–2011 national Brazilian RV surveillance. In addition, to characterize the RV group A (RVA) strains in order to gain insight into the supposed vaccine selective pressure imposed to Brazilian children population. Methods A total of 2102 convenient fecal specimens were investigated by ELISA, PAGE, and RT-PCR. Results RV was detected in 203 (9.6%) of 2102 specimens, and showed a marked peak of detection in September. RVA infection was detected in 9.4% (197/2102) and RV group C (RVC) in 0.3% (6/2102). The most frequent genotypes detected in 2004 and 2005 were G9P[8] (38.5%; 5/13) and G1P[8] (54.5%; 6/11), respectively. The dominant genotype identified from 2006 to 2011 was G2P[4] (64.4%; 116/180). Detection rate varied during the 8-year period of the study from 0.7% to 12.9%. Conclusion The high detection rate of G2P[4] in adults provides further evidence that its dominance reflects the seasonality of RVA strains instead of the supposed selective advantage created by vaccination program. It also can be suggested that adult infections may serve as a reservoir to maintain RVA strains in childhood gastroenteritis. Considering the detection rate, the evident reduction of RVA frequency observed in children after vaccine introduction was not present in adults.

Abstract
In an epidemiological survey from South India, 936 serum samples were tested for IgG against recombinant baculovirus-expressed VP6 proteins from human group A and group C rotaviruses. The overall seroprevalence for group A was 100% and for group C was 25.32% (95% CI 22.64-28.21). The lowest seroprevalence for group C was in children aged <10 years (16.79%). An age-related rise in seroprevalence in group C, but not group A, suggests different patterns of exposure. Seroprevalence was similar in rural and urban subjects, unlike the higher prevalence in rural subjects in studies elsewhere.

Abstract
The prevalence and potential zoonotic transmission of group C rotavirus (RVC) were examined by testing fecal samples collected from children during a longitudinal study that was carried out in the outskirts of Belém, Brazil, from December 1982 to March 1986. The study involved a group of 30 children who were followed from birth to 3 years. Of the 77 samples tested from 29 children, 5 (6.5%) were positive for human and 3 (4%) for porcine RVC by using nested PCR assay with primers specific for VP6 gene of human or porcine RVC and by Southern hybridization using a probe specific for VP6 gene of both human and porcine RVC. In addition, a total of 59 fecal specimens from the 30th child were tested, 1 (1.7%) and 14 (23.7%) were positive for human and porcine RVC, respectively. Partial nucleotide sequences of VP6 gene demonstrated that the six human strains detected in Brazil were homologous with other human RVC, and 14 of the 17 porcine RVC strains examined showed a complete homology among themselves but differed slightly from the porcine Cowden strain, suggesting that a single porcine RVC strain was circulating in Belém. This study is the first to provide evidence for transmission of RVC from swine to human. They also indicate that both human and porcine RVC were endemic in Belém.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Group C rotavirus causes sporadic cases and outbreaks of acute diarrhea in humans but its burden as a cause of severe gastroenteritis in children remains unclear. OBJECTIVES To investigate the epidemiology and burden of group C rotavirus gastroenteritis among children in Rhode Island, United States. STUDY DESIGN Diarrhea stool specimens from 124 children < or =10 years of age were collected, screened for group C and A rotavirus by EIA specific for each group, and further examined by nested PCR and Southern hybridization using primers and probes specific to the VP7 gene of human group C rotavirus. Group C rotavirus-positive fecal specimens were also examined by EM. RESULTS Rotavirus was detected in 73 (59.0%) of 124 fecal samples. These included 53 (42.7%) positive for group A, 5 (4.0%) for group C and 15 (12.1%) for both group A and C rotaviruses. Examination of group C-positive samples by EM revealed the presence of largely empty or damaged rotavirus-like particles. CONCLUSION These findings indicate that group C rotavirus is an important cause or a contributing cause of diarrhea among infants and older children in Rhode Island, United States.

Abstract
Group C rotaviruses are associated with sporadic gastroenteritis and outbreaks of diarrhea in children and adults worldwide. Three cases with group C rotavirus infection are described, and the molecular characterization of the gene for the major capsid protein VP6 is reported. Patients described in this report were 10 years old or more and had mild to moderate clinical symptoms. A high nucleotide (>98%) and amino acid (100%) identity was observed among all three isolated Slovenian group C rotavirus strains. The similar identity is confirmed of Slovenian strains with other human group C rotavirus isolates, which were seen to cluster separately from the animal group C rotavirus isolates by a phylogenetic analysis. This is the first report of group C rotavirus detection in Slovenia.

Abstract
A survey was conducted for identification of human group C rotaviruses in stool specimens taken from children suffering diarrhea in suburban Buenos Aires regions. Among 90 true negative group A samples as defined by ELISA, RT-PCR and PAGE, five were positive by group C specific RT-PCR (VP7 and VP6 genes) and three of these samples exhibited the characteristic 4-3-2-2 dsRNA pattern of group C rotavirus. These results were further confirmed by electron microscopy and by ELISA for detection of group C VP6 specific antigens. Sequence analysis of the VP7 gene from one of these isolates revealed a 97.3-98.6% nucleotide identity and up to 99.1% protein homology with human group C rotavirus strains found scattered throughout the last ten years in other countries. Conversely, similar analysis performed with porcine strains showed a much lower homology degree both at the nucleotide (75.5% nucleotide identity) and amino acid level (85.5% protein homology). Detection of group C rotavirus in children with acute diarrhea in Argentina extends the identification range of this agent in the region and is consistent with previous reported data that demonstrate a global distribution of this virus.

Abstract
Worldwide, rotaviruses account for 600,000 to 870,000 deaths per year among infants and young children. In Brazil, rotaviruses were first seen in 1976 by scanning electron microscopy of stool samples from diarrheic infants in Belém, Pará. Hospital-based studies have shown that rotaviruses are associated with 12-42% of cases of acute diarrhea. In addition, community-based studies yielded an average of 0.25 rotavirus-related diarrheal episodes per child per year. G types 1 to 4 account for about two-thirds of circulating strains, but the (unusual) P[8],G5 genotype has been claimed to cause over 10% of rotavirus diarrheal episodes. It has been shown that over 70% of children develop rotavirus antibodies by the age of 4-5 years. The tetravalent rhesus-human rotavirus vaccine (RRV-TV) conferred 35% protection according to a two-year follow-up study in Belém, Pará, Brazil, but reached an efficacy of 60% during the first year of life. RRV-TV was also shown to be 75% protective against very severe gastroenteritis in northern Brazil. Vaccination with RRV-TV has been suspended recently in the United States because of the detection of intussusception as a side effect. Therefore, further vaccine trials in Brazil will probably involve rotavirus candidate vaccines other than RRV-TV.

Abstract
Rotaviruses (RV) are important etiological agents of acute gastroenteritis in infants and young children, as well as the young of a variety of animals worldwide. These viruses belong to Reoviridae family and contain a genome of 11 segments of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA). Two major proteins, VP4 and VP7, encoded by genome segments 4 and 7, 8 or 9, respectively, evoke a neutralizing antibody response and form the basis for the current classification of group (gp) A rotavirus into P (VP4) and G (VP7) serotypes. Although much recent progress has been made on the molecular biology of gp C RV, routine methods to detect and discriminate human, porcine, and bovine strains are not available widely. In this study, a multiplex reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and digoxigenin-labeled (dig) oligonucleotide probes using chemiluminescence has been developed to detect and discriminate VP7 genes from culture-adapted and field isolates of human, porcine and bovine gp C RV. The multiplex RT-PCR and dig-probes were specific for the VP7 genes of human, porcine and bovine gp C RV and allowed detection and characterization of single and mixed infections of porcine gp C RV with porcine gp A or gp B rotaviruses. Detection rates for gp C RV were more than 50% when compared with polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. These new diagnostic assays may help determine the epidemiological importance of these viruses in human and animal infections.

Abstract
A large number of viruses can be found in the human intestine. Some (bacteriophages) infect the bacteria present as normal flora and others use the gut as a portal of entry. This review examines the virology, pathogenesis, immunology, epidemiology, clinical features, treatment and prevention of the viral enteropathogens. Rotavirus is undoubtedly the most important, causing an estimated 800,000 deaths each year, especially in developing countries. Recently, an oral live quadrivalent rhesus rotavirus vaccine has been licensed for use in the USA. It has great potential but there are a number of hurdles to be overcome before it can be given to infants in developing countries. Molecular techniques are revolutionizing our understanding of rotavirus pathogenesis, and the tremendous diversity of Caliciviridae and Astroviridae, as well as producing new diagnostic techniques and vaccines.
