Abstract
Upper gastrointestinal lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) is a rare disease-especially esophageal LELC (ELELC). Here, we report a surgically treated case of ELELC with gastric carcinoma. The patient was a 68-year-old asymptomatic Japanese man. Endoscopy revealed a submucosal-like protruding tumor located in the anterior wall of the esophagus 31-33 cm from the upper incisors and a slightly ulcerative lesion at the antrum of stomach. Histopathological diagnosis from biopsy of the esophageal lesion revealed a poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma; the stomach lesion was found to be well-differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma. CT showed a swollen lymph node along the left recurrent nerve. On the basis of a diagnosis of esophageal and gastric cancer, we performed esophagectomy with three-field lymph node dissection and partial gastrectomy. Histopathology of the resected esophageal tumor revealed solid nests of cancer cells, with substantial infiltration of lymphoid cells into the stroma. There were poorly differentiated cancer cells with large nuclei in the lymph node. In situ hybridization for Epstein-Barr virus showed no nuclear signal in the tumor cells. Immunohistochemistry gave a diagnosis of ELELC.

Abstract
The Fifth edition of the World Health Organization classification of digestive system and American Joint Committee on Cancer staging manual contain substantial refinements of information for esophageal tumors. The epithelial tumors of esophagus are classified as benign, dysplasia, and malignant groups. Dysplasia is divided into Barrett dysplasia and squamous dysplasia and graded into either low-grade or high-grade. Malignant esophageal tumors are often adenocarcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma. The main update in cancer staging in esophageal tumors is the subdivision of the prognostic staging into 3 groups; squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and carcinoma after adjuvant therapy. HER-2 amplification is recognized as a molecular target for therapy of esophagogastric adenocarcinoma. The other esophageal tumors are adenoid cystic carcinoma, mucoepidermoid/adenosquamous carcinoma, undifferentiated carcinoma and neuroendocrine neoplasms. Overall, the incorporation of new data and definitions on histopathology, prognostic factors, and genetics are important for personalized management of patients with esophageal tumors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Undifferentiated carcinoma of the esophagus with rhabdoid features is a very rare histologic finding that is occasionally associated with the loss of SWI/SNF-related matrix-associated actin-dependent regulator of chromatin subfamily B member 1 (SMARCB1); however, until now, few survey reports of this type of tumor have been published. In this study, we describe a case of esophageal carcinoma with undifferentiated components and rhabdoid features that was exclusively positive for vimentin and SMARCB1 in a patient with prolonged survival. CASE PRESENTATION A 67-year-old man complained of a stomachache and loss of appetite persisting for 1 month. He was then admitted to the hospital. Diagnostic imaging studies revealed a transdiaphragmatic circular ulcerative tumor of the esophagogastric region. Biopsy specimens showed undifferentiated round cell carcinoma. The patient underwent lower esophageal resection and total gastrectomy with lymph node dissection. Microscopic analysis revealed that most of the primary tumor consisted of large undifferentiated round cells and scattered rhabdoid cells. The tumor invaded the muscular layer in the esophagus and the subserosal layer in the stomach, and metastasis was noted in only one lymph node. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that the round and rhabdoid cells found in the primary tumor were diffusely positive for SMARCB1 and vimentin. The tumor displayed focal positivity for the anti-pan-cytokeratin antibody AE1/AE3. In the positive lymph node, round undifferentiated carcinoma cells were admixed with squamous carcinoma cells that were positive for cytokeratin 5/6 and 34βE12. The MIB-1 index was 19.7% and 0.5% for the round cells from the primary tumor and epithelial cells from the metastatic lymph node lesion, respectively, and 70.1% for the round cells from the metastatic lymph node lesion. The patient has been alive for 10 years after surgery without tumor recurrence. CONCLUSIONS We reported a rare case of esophageal carcinoma with undifferentiated components, rhabdoid features, and a good prognosis.

Abstract
Lymphoepithelioma like carcinoma (LELC) is a well-known neoplastic lesion that mainly involves the stomach and which has been linked to Epstein Barr virus infection. There are exceptional cases of intestinal involvement by LELC, with 7 reported cases to date. We report a new case of LELC affecting the right colon and review the literature on this rare disorder, with special emphasis on pathogenesis, molecular features and differential diagnosis.

Abstract
In spite of increasing incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma in the last few decades, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) still remains the dominant subtype of esophageal cancer worldwide. Apart from conventional SCC, some rare unconventional tumors of esophageal squamous mucosa are also well known. This study provides an introduction to these and presents a brief review of the literature, including the diagnostic and prognostic importance of each variant.

Abstract
Due to differences in prognosis and management, it is important to subclassify esophageal carcinoma. Esophageal lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) is extremely rare, with only a few cases reported to date. Review of the literature revealed case reports describing lesions with similar histology. We present a 69-year-old man with a giant pedunculated-polypoid lesion of the esophagus shrinking the lumen. Endoscopic excision of the tumor was performed and final histopathological diagnosis was confirmed to be LELC. In contrast to a previous case with a more aggressive course and a recurrent lesion, our patient died of his disease within 8 months of diagnosis. Here we discuss the endoscopic and radiologic findings of the case and a review of the literature.

Abstract
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) a ubiquitous gamma herpesvirus persists for life, generally without health consequences. However, it is associated with several well-recognized malignancies, such as Burkitt's lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. A growing list of malignancies has been proposed to be EBV-associated: most of which are consistently EBV-positive whereas others show inconsistent results. The possible contribution of EBV to the development and/or progression of different "non-classical" tumors is discussed in terms of putative "non-traditional'' infection in EBV-related tumors.

Abstract
Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) of the esophagus is extremely rare and the prognosis has been described to be favorable. Herein, the case is reported of esophageal LELC showing non-progressive course for 1 year. The patient was a 70-year-old Japanese man with a submucosal tumor in the lower esophagus. The tumor was endoscopically regarded as a benign leiomyoma. One year after the first endoscopic examination, the size of the lesion remained unchanged despite no treatment. Histologically, the tumor showed undifferentiated carcinoma associated with dense lymphocytic and plasma cell infiltration. Lymphoid follicles surrounded the tumor cell nests. Immunohistochemically, Ki-67 labeling index of the tumor cells were 76.0%, and there were few single-strand DNA-positive apoptotic cells. In situ hybridization using a digoxigen-labeled Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-encoded small RNA (EBER)-1 riboprobe failed to detect the presence of EBV infection. Physicians should be aware that esophageal LELC endoscopically mimics benign submucosal tumor. This case may demonstrate that esophageal LELC is a slow-growing tumor and it is related to immune reaction.

Abstract
Primary lymphoepitheliomalike carcinomas (LELC) of the esophagus are uncommon, with only 29 previously reported cases in the literature. Primary LELC of the esophagus is associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). We herein report a 52-year-old man who presented with dysphagia and weight loss and was found to have a polypoid mass in the middle esophagus. Pathologic examination showed LELC. EBV infection was demonstrated by immunohistochemical detection of EBNA-1 in neoplastic cells and polymerase chain reaction amplification for EBNA-3C, BamHI-F, and W1/I1 regions but not by in situ hybridization by EBER-1 transcripts. EBV genotyping analysis demonstrated infection by a novel type "i"/XhoI loss recombinant strain. Although it is accepted that polymorphisms at BamHI-W1/I1 region cosegregate with polymorphisms at XhoI restriction site, this novel recombinant EBV has been identified in healthy donors and in nasal NK/T-cell lymphoma. To our knowledge, this is the first report that describes this recombinant type "i"/XhoI loss EBV strain in a primary LELC of the esophagus.

Abstract
A case of primary lymphoepithelioma of the esophagus is presented in an Arabic female patient. This very rare Epstein-Barr virus infection-related malignancy has previously been reported only in patients from Japan. The tumor exhibited classic histologic and immunohistochemical features of lymphoepithelioma, and was successfully treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and irradiation followed by surgical resection.

Abstract
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) rarely occurs in the esophagus. We report a case of such tumor arising in the esophagus of a 64-year-old Taiwanese woman. No tumors were detected outside the esophagus including nasopharynx by thorough clinical studies. She underwent subtotal esophagectomy. Light microscopy disclosed a poorly differentiated carcinoma morphologically reminiscent of nasopharyngeal undifferentiated carcinoma (lymphoepithelioma). Immunohistochemical stain for latent membrane protein-1 showed positivity on the tumor cells. The infiltrating lymphocytes were chiefly composed of CD8-positive cytotoxic T cells. EBV DNA was demonstrated by both nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in the main tumor and metastatic lymph node, and localization in the tumor cells by in situ PCR in situ hybridization (ISH). However, the result of EBV-encoded small RNA-1 ISH was negative. Our case suggests that LELC of the esophagus may be associated with EBV in the endemic area. Due to its distinct histological features, the association with EBV, and possible prognostic implication, LELC of the esophagus should be precisely diagnosed and discerned from the usual poorly differentiated carcinoma.

Abstract
Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) is a rare form of lung cancer, usually encountered in Chinese patients. Similar to nasopharyngeal carcinoma, LELC of the lung is strongly associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection in Asian patients, but there is controversy over whether an association exists in patients from Western countries. To determine whether such a relationship exists, we retrospectively studied 6 cases of primary LELC of the lung, all of which were in Western patients. There were 4 men and 2 women, ranging in age from 49 to 75 years. The tumors ranged from 1 to 4.5 cm in diameter. Four patients had stage I disease, 1 had stage IIb disease, and 1 had stage IIIa disease. All patients are alive without evidence of disease with a follow-up of 18 to 30 months. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue was stained with hematoxylin-eosin for routine evaluation and immunostained for keratin and leukocyte common antigen (LCA). LCA staining was performed to exclude large-cell lymphoma. Immunoperoxidase staining (1:500 clone CS1-4; Dako, Carpinteria, CA) and in situ hybridization were performed to detect EBV. Tumors consisted of solid nests of undifferentiated tumor cells in a syncytial arrangement surrounded by heavy lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate. Tumor cells stained positively for keratin but negative for LCA. All 6 cases were negative for EBV, suggesting no association between EBV and LELC in the Western population.
