Abstract
Mangroves, coastal forests under the influence of tides, are known to be very resilient when they face natural disturbances such as storms or tsunami. While they provide several ecological services, they are threatened by many anthropic pressures. The aim of this study was to assess and to compare the stability of two mangrove fringes defined by contrasted set of natural constraints and exposed to pretreated domestic wastewaters discharges. The in situ experimental system set up in Mayotte Island (Indian Ocean) allowed us to determine both the short-term (2 years) and the long-term (9 years) resistance and the resilience. We focused on vegetation and crabs, an essential component of mangroves fauna. Wastewater discharges induced increases in tree coverage, leaves productivity and pigment content, and a decrease in crab diversity and density. Within 2 years after the release of the disturbance, several parameters reach back control values indicating fast resilience. Our results notably emphasized the high stability of the mangrove fringe dominated by Rhizophora mucronata trees, which was both more resistant and more resilient. This makes this fringe more suitable for application purposes, such as outfall for domestic wastewaters treatment plants.

Abstract
It was hypothesized that mangroves, tropical wetlands, could be used for the finishing treatment of domestic wastewaters. Our aim was to determine if a nutrient-stressed mangrove could tolerate long-term discharges of pretreated wastewater (PW). Since 2008, in an in situ experimental system set up in Mayotte Island (Indian Ocean), domestic PW are discharged into two impacted areas (675 m2) dominated by different species of mangrove trees. Anthropogenic inputs during > 4.5 years led to an increase in vegetation growth associated with an increase in leaf pigment content, leaf surface and tree productivity. A marked increase in tree mortality was observed. There was no effect on crabs and meiofauna densities, but significant modifications of community structures. These effects may be directly linked to PW inputs, or indirectly to the modifications of the environment associated with higher tree growth. However, our results indicate that there was no major dysfunction the ecosystem.

Abstract
Non-random mating, particularly positive size-assortative mating, is common and can have major evolutionary consequences. The causes of size-assortative mating, however, are rarely examined. Here we explore the possibility of sexual selection, mate availability and mating constraints causing the strong correlation between male and female sizes in the fiddler crabUca mjoebergi. We show that the full size range of males is available to females throughout the mating period, so mate availability is unlikely to cause size-assortative mating in this species. We also show that mechanical constraints do not prevent females from entering the burrows or mating with the full size range of males. We suggest that the strong size assortative mating that we observed throughout the mating cycle is driven by sexual selection. Both males and females prefer large partners. The benefit to mating with large partners needs further investigation.

Abstract
O objetivo deste estudo é caracterizar pela primeira vez alguns aspectos da reprodução do caranguejo-uçá em manguezais da Baía da Babitonga (Santa Catarina). Além disso, a densidade e o tamanho do estoque deste recurso pesqueiro foram também estimados. Os exemplares foram coletados mensalmente, de maio de 2002 a abril de 2003, em duas áreas distintas: Iperoba e Palmital; um total de 2265 espécimes (1623 machos e 642 fêmeas) foi analisado. Os machos com gônadas maturas foram registrados durante todo o ano, enquanto as fêmeas com gônadas maturas ocorreram em apenas cinco meses. As fêmeas ovígeras foram registradas apenas em dezembro e janeiro. O etograma do fenômeno de migração reprodutiva ("andada") esteve em concordância com a maior atividade de caranguejos associada às luas cheias e novas, com maior intensidade em dezembro e janeiro, relacionados ao verão austral. A densidade total no Manguezal de Iperoba foi de 2,05 ± 0,97 ind./m², não diferindo significativamente daquela registrada para o Manguezal do Palmital (2,06 ± 1,08 ind./m²) (p < 0,05). A média global para a estimativa de densidade na Baia da Babitonga foi de 2,05 ± 1,00 ind./m², correspondendo a 1,42 ± 0,89 ind./m² com base nas galerias abertas e 0,64 ± 0,63 ind./m² para as galerias fechadas.

Abstract
Although alterations at the organism level in decapod crustaceans on exposure to heavy metals have been evidenced in the laboratory, little examination of metal effects on morphology and population parameters have been explored in a field-based situation. Relationships between morphological parameters, population demography and heavy metal sediment loadings were examined in conjunction with the accumulation of metals in the Semaphore crab, Heloecius cordiformis, in the Port Jackson and Hawkesbury River estuaries, Sydney, Australia. H. cordiformis exhibited sexual dimorphism, with males having larger carapace width, carapace length, chelae length and total mass than females. Sexes were subsequently treated separately to assess morphological differences among locations. Locations that had greater proportions of females with purple chelae and less females in the population tended to have higher sediment metal levels. These relationships were maintained over time, and could be employed as population-level biological indicators of heavy metal stress. Copper and zinc were regulated in the hepatopancreas of H. cordiformis. Lead was accumulated in the hepatopancreas of H. cordiformis in proportion to sediment lead levels, suggesting the species is both an appropriate candidate for bio-indication of lead pollution, and Pb is the main metal linked with population level differences. Accumulation of lead varied between sexes, indicating that sexes must be monitored separately. Smaller males accumulated more lead than larger males, suggesting size is an important consideration for lead accumulation.
