Biogenic Synthesis of Copper Nanoparticles: A Systematic Review of Their Features and Main Applications

Nanotechnology is an innovative field of study that has made significant progress due to its potential versatility and wide range of applications, precisely because of the development of metal nanoparticles such as copper. Nanoparticles are bodies composed of a nanometric cluster of atoms (1-100 nm). Biogenic alternatives have replaced their chemical synthesis due to their environmental friendliness, dependability, sustainability, and low energy demand. This ecofriendly option has medical, pharmaceutical, food, and agricultural applications. When compared to their chemical counterparts, using biological agents, such as micro-organisms and plant extracts, as reducing and stabilizing agents has shown viability and acceptance. Therefore, it is a feasible alternative for rapid synthesis and scaling-up processes. Several research articles on the biogenic synthesis of copper nanoparticles have been published over the past decade. Still, none provided an organized, comprehensive overview of their properties and potential applications. Thus, this systematic review aims to assess research articles published over the past decade regarding the antioxidant, antitumor, antimicrobial, dye removal, and catalytic activities of biogenically synthesized copper nanoparticles using the scientific methodology of big data analytics. Plant extract and micro-organisms (bacteria and fungi) are addressed as biological agents. We intend to assist the scientific community in comprehending and locating helpful information for future research or application development.

Recent advances on botanical biosynthesis of nanoparticles for catalytic, water treatment and agricultural applications: A review

Green synthesis of nanoparticles using plant extracts minimizes the usage of toxic chemicals or energy. Here, we concentrate on the green synthesis of nanoparticles using natural compounds from plant extracts and their applications in catalysis, water treatment and agriculture. Polyphenols, flavonoid, rutin, quercetin, myricetin, kaempferol, coumarin, and gallic acid in the plant extracts engage in the reduction and stabilization of green nanoparticles. Ten types of nanoparticles involving Ag, Au, Cu, Pt, CuO, ZnO, MgO, TiO₂, Fe₃O₄, and ZrO₂ with emphasis on their formation mechanism are illuminated. We find that green nanoparticles serve as excellent, and recyclable catalysts for reduction of nitrophenols and synthesis of organic compounds with high yields of 83-100% and at least 5 recycles. Many emerging pollutants such as synthetic dyes, antibiotics, heavy metal and oils are effectively mitigated (90-100%) using green nanoparticles. In agriculture, green nanoparticles efficiently immobilize toxic compounds in soil. They are also sufficient nanopesticides to kill harmful larvae, and nanoinsecticides against dangerous vectors of pathogens. As potential nanofertilizers and nanoagrochemicals, green nanoparticles will open a revolution in green agriculture for sustainable development.

Biowaste- and nature-derived (nano)materials: Biosynthesis, stability and environmental applications

Due to the environmental pollution issues and the supply of drinking/clean water, removal of both inorganic and organic (particularly dyes, nitroarenes, and heavy metals) to non-dangerous products and useful compounds are very important transformations. The deployment of sustainable and eco-friendly nanomaterials with exceptional structural and unique features such as high efficiency and stability/recyclability, high surface/volume ratio, low-cost production routes has become a priority; nonetheless, numerous significant challenges/restrictions still remained unresolved. The immobilization of green synthesized metal nanoparticles (NPs) on the natural materials and biowaste generated templates have been analyzed widely as a greener approach due to their environmentally friendly preparation methods, earth-abundance, cost-effectiveness with low energy consumption, biocompatibility, as well as adjustability in various cases of biomolecules as bioreducing agents. Natural and biowaste materials are widely considered as important sources to fabricate greener and biosynthesized types of metal, metal oxide, and metal sulfide nanomaterials using plant extracts. Integrating green synthesized nanoparticles with various biotemplates offers new practical composites for mitigating environmental challenges. In this review, degradation of dyes, reduction of toxic nitrophenols, absorption of heavy metals, and other hazardous/toxic environmental pollutants from contaminated water bodies using biowaste- and nature-derived nanomaterials are highlighted.

Eggshell membranes coated chitosan decorated with metal nanoparticles for the catalytic reduction of organic contaminates

This study focusses on the effect of chitosan coating with eggshell membranes for the reduction of different organic pollutants. Chickens eggs were collected from the local market and utilized to extract the enrich eggshell membranes (ESM). The chicken eggshell membranes are abundant waste material which is inexpensive and illustrates remarkable physiognomies for many possible applications. Fresh fibers/strips coated by chitosan (CS) were prepared by mixing the eggshell membranes with CS solution (2 wt%/v) in different proportions i.e., 10 %, 30 %, 50 %, 60 %, 70 %, 80 %, and 90 %. These strips were then templated with copper and iron metal nanoparticles by putting them in their metal ions aqueous solution to adsorb the metals ions and were then reduced to zero-valent metal nanoparticles (MNPS) by using NaBH₄ aqueous solution. These prepared materials (MNPS@ESM-CS) were characterized by using XRD, XPS, FE-SEM, and EDS to confirm the successful preparation of MNPs over the surface of ESM coated with CS. Afterwards, these prepared materials were investigated as a catalyst for the reduction of different organic pollutants, such as 4-nitroaniline (4-NA), 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and methylene blue (MB) dye. The catalytic efficiency of ESM was enhanced 5.7-fold by adding only 20 % CS solution. It was observed that Cu@ESM-CS-80 % took 7 min for reduction of 4-NA, 6 min for 4-NP, and 7 min for MB dye. The reusability of the catalytic strip was also investigated for four cycles and found efficient and can be easily recovered by simply pulling it from the reaction mixture.

Lignocellulosic biomass supported metal nanoparticles for the catalytic reduction of organic pollutants

Lignocellulosic biomass waste is a cheap, eco-friendly, and sustainable raw material for a wide array of applications. In the present study, an easy, fast, and economically feasible route has been proposed for the preparation of different zero-valent metal nanoparticles (ZV-MNPs) based on Cu, Co, Ag, and Ni NPs using empty fruit bunch (EFB) biomass residue as support material. The catalytic efficiency of ZV-MNPs/EFB catalyst was investigated against five model pollutants, such as methyl orange (MO), congo red (CR), methylene blue (MB), acridine orange (AO), and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) using NaBH₄ as a source of hydrogen and electron. Comparative study revealed that among as-prepared ZV-MNPs/EFB catalysts, Cu-NPs immobilized onto EFB (Cu/EFB) exhibited maximum catalytic efficiency towards pollutant abasement. Degradation reactions were highly efficient, and were completed within a short time (4 min) in case of MO, CR, and MB, whilst AO and 4-NP were reduced in less than 15 min. Kinetic investigation revealed that the degradation rate of model pollutants accorded with pseudo-first order model. Furthermore, supported catalysts were easily recovered after the completion of experiment by simply pulling the catalyst from reaction system. Recyclability tests performed on Cu/EFB revealed that more than 97% of the reduction was achieved in case of MO dye for four successive cycles of reuse. The as-prepared heterostructure showed multifunctional properties, such as enhanced uptake of contaminants, high catalytic efficiency, and easy recovery, hence, offers great prospects in wastewater purification.

Facile synthesis of gold nanoparticles using carbon dots for electrochemical detection of neurotransmitter, dopamine in human serum and as a chemocatalyst for nitroaromatic reduction

Herein, the authors reported a carbon dots mediated synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) at room temperature. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the AuNPs are spherical in shape with a size of 10 nm. As-prepared AuNPs was immobilised on carbon paste electrode and subjected to electrochemical sensing of an important neurotransmitter dopamine. Differential pulse voltammetry studies revealed sensitive and selective determination of dopamine in the presence of commonly interfering ascorbic acid and uric acid. The linear detection range was 10-600 μM and the limit of detection was 0.7 ± 0.18 μM. The practical application was demonstrated by measuring dopamine in human blood serum and urine samples. The catalytic activity of AuNPs was evaluated by sodium borohydride mediated reduction of nitroaromatic compounds. The reduction kinetics was found to be pseudo-first-order kinetics. All the tested nitroaromatics reduced to corresponding amines in <10 min.

Biosynthesis of reusable and recyclable CuO@Magnetite@Hen Bone NCs and its antioxidant and antibacterial activities: a highly stable magnetically nanocatalyst for excellent reduction of organic dyes and adsorption of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

For the first time, through a fast, eco-friendly and economic method, the aqueous extract of the leaf of Euphorbia corollate was used to the green synthesis of the highly stable CuO@Magnetite@Hen Bone nanocomposites (NCs) as a potent antioxidant and antibacterial agent against Pseudomonas aureus, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae pathogenic bacteria. The biosynthesised NCs were identified using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, elemental mapping, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy and UV-vis analytical techniques. Also, the radical scavenging activity using (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) method was used to evaluate the antioxidant activity of the NCs. The stability of nanocatalyst was monitored using the XRD and SEM analyses after 30 days from its synthesis. Furthermore, its excellent catalytic activity, recycling stability, and high substrate applicability were demonstrated to the adsorption of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons of the light crude oil from Shiwashok oil fields and destruction of methylene blue and methyl orange as harmful organic dyes at ambient temperature using UV-vis spectroscopy. Moreover, the green CuO@Magnetite@Hen Bone NCs were recovered and reused several times without considerable loss of its catalytic activity.

Zeolites as Carriers of Antitumor Ribonuclease Binase

Natural and synthetic zeolites have many applications in biomedicine and nutrition. Due to its properties, zeolites can absorb therapeutically active proteins and release them under physiological conditions. In this study we tested the clinoptilolite, chabazite, and natrolite ability to be loaded by antitumor ribonuclease binase and the cytotoxicity of the obtained complexes. We found the optimal conditions for binase loading into zeolites and established the dynamic of its release. Cytotoxic effects of zeolite-binase complexes toward colorectal cancer Caco2 cells were characterized after 24 and 48 h of incubation with cells using MTT-test. Zeolites were toxic by itselfs and reduced cells viability by 30% (clinoptilolite), 40% (chabazite), and 70% (natrolite) after 48 h of incubation. Binase complexes with clinoptilolite as well as chabazite always demonstrated enhanced toxicity (up to 57 and 60% for clinoptilolite and chabazite, respectively) in comparison with binase and zeolites separately. Our results contribute to the perspective development of binase-based complexes for therapy of colorectal cancer for or the treatment of malignant skin neoplasms where the complexes can be used in pasty form.

Chitosan-titanium oxide fibers supported zero-valent nanoparticles: Highly efficient and easily retrievable catalyst for the removal of organic pollutants

Different chitosan-titanium oxide (CS-TiO₂-x, with x = TiO₂ loadings of 1, 5, 10,15 and 20 wt%) nanocomposite fibers were prepared and kept separately in each salt solution of CuSO₄, CoNO₃, AgNO₃ and NiSO₄ to adsorb Cu²⁺, Co²⁺, Ag⁺, and Ni⁺ ions, respectively. The metal ions loaded onto CS-TiO₂ fibers were reduced to their respective zero-valent metal nanoparticles (ZV-MNPs) like Cu⁰, Co⁰, Ag⁰ and Ni⁰ by treating with NaBH₄. The CS-TiO₂ fibers templated with various ZV-MNPs were characterized and investigated for their catalytic efficiency. Among all prepared ZV-MNPs, Cu⁰ nanoparticles templated on CS-TiO₂-15 fibers exhibited high catalytic efficiency for the reduction of dyes (methyl orange (MO), congo red (CR), methylene blue (MB) and acridine orange (AO)) and nitrophenols (4-nitrohphenol (4-NP), 2-nitrophenol (2-NP), 3-nitrophenol (3-NP) and 2,6-dinitrophenol (2,6-DNP)). Besides the good catalytic activities of Cu/CS-TiO₂-15 fibers, it could be easily recovered by simply pulling the fiber from the reaction medium.

Chitosan coated cotton cloth supported zero-valent nanoparticles: Simple but economically viable, efficient and easily retrievable catalysts

A simple, economically viable and fast method has been utilized for the preparation of highly active metal nanoparticles (MNPs) in coating layer of chitosan (CH) over cellulose microfibers of cotton cloth (CC). 2 wt% of CH solution was used for the coating of CC strips (CC-CH), and were kept in aqueous solutions of metal salts to adsorb metal ions. The CC-CH templated with metal ions were then treated with aqueous solution of NaBH₄ to reduce the metal ions into zero-valent metal nanoparticles (M⁰). The CC-CH strips loaded with M⁰ were characterized by XRD, XPS, ATR-FTIR, FE-SEM and TGA, which indicates the successful synthesis of MNPs by this method. The M⁰/CC-CH strips were used as an efficient catalyst for the model reduction reaction of nitrophenol and toxic organic dyes. Among all the prepaped samples, Fe/CC-CH showed good catalytic activity for 4-NP and Rh-B dye reduction in the presence of NaBH₄ with rate constants of 0.2937 min^-1 and 0.3804 min^-1, respectively. Moreover Fe/CC-CH has good catalytic reduction ability for MO and MB having rate constants equal to 0.1698 and 0.2802 min^-1, respectively. Beside the good catalytic ability, it could be easily recoverable as compared to other available techniques. The recovery was completed by simply pulling the strip from the reaction matrix after completion of the reaction and can be used several times.
