Screening the UV-blocking and antimicrobial properties of herbal nanoparticles prepared from Aloe vera leaves for textile applications

Herbal and nano-based herbal medicine: New insights into their therapeutic aspects against periodontitis

Objective

Periodontitis is a type of prevalent chronic inflammatory disorder resulting in a failure in the function of tissues supporting the tooth, like gingiva, alveolar bone, and periodontal ligament. Although antibiotic therapy is a common therapy for periodontitis cases, this approach can cause some adverse effects in these patients. Thus, finding an effective curative option with low side effects is still a puzzle.

Materials and Methods

This narrative review was conducted on the effects of herbal and nano-based herbal medicine against periodontitis by searching different databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct, and Scientific Information Databases.

Results

According to published studies, some popular herbal formulations, such as Aloe vera, curcumin, Melaleuca alternifolia, and Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, can be effective in periodontitis treatment. However, these herbal products may be accompanied by some pharmacological limitations, such as poor bioavailability, instability, and weak water solubility. On the other hand, harnessing nano-based herbal formulations can elevate the bioavailability, diminish toxicity, and omit repeated administration of drugs.

Conclusion

Herbal and nano-based herbal products can create a good chance to treat periodontitis efficiently.

Antibacterial and Osteogenic Doxycycline Imprinted Bioglass Microspheres to Combat Bone Infection

Currently, postoperative infection is a significant challenge in bone and dental surgical procedures, demanding the exploration of innovative approaches due to the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This study aims to develop a strategy for controlled and smart antibiotic release while accelerating osteogenesis to expedite bone healing. In this regard, temperature-responsive doxycycline (DOX) imprinted bioglass microspheres (BGMs) were synthesized. Following the formation of chitosan-modified BGMs, poly N-isopropylacrylamide (pNIPAm) was used for surface imprinting of DOX. The temperature-responsive molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) exhibited pH and temperature dual-responsive adsorption and controlled-release properties for DOX. The temperature-responsive MIP was optimized by investigating the molar ratio of N,N'-methylene bis(acrylamide) (MBA, the cross-linker) to NIPAm. Our results demonstrated that the MIPs showed superior adsorption capacity (96.85 mg/g at 35 °C, pH = 7) than nonimprinted polymers (NIPs) and manifested a favorable selectivity toward DOX. The adsorption behavior of DOX on the MIPs fit well with the Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Drug release studies demonstrated a controlled release of DOX due to imprinted cavities, which were fitted with the Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetic model. DOX-imprinted BGMs also revealed comparable antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli to the DOX (control). In addition, MIPs promoted viability and osteogenic differentiation of MG63 osteoblast-like cells. Overall, the findings demonstrate the significant potential of DOX-imprinted BGMs for use in bone defects. Nonetheless, further in vitro investigations and subsequent in vivo experiments are warranted to advance this research.

Antibacterial adhesive based on oxidized tannic acid-chitosan for rapid hemostasis

Currently, bacterial infections and bleeding interfere with wound healing, and multifunctional hydrogels with appropriate blood homeostasis, skin adhesion, and antibacterial activity are desirable. In this study, chitosan-based hydrogels were synthesized using oxidized tannic acid (OTA) and Fe3+ as cross-linkers (CS-OTA-Fe) by forming covalent, non-covalent, and metal coordination bonds between Fe3+ and OTA. Our results demonstrated that CS-OTA-Fe hydrogels showed antibacterial properties against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus)and Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli), low hemolysis rate (< 2 %), rapid blood clotting ability, in vitro (< 2 min), and in vivo (90 s) in mouse liver bleeding. Additionally, increasing the chitosan concentration from 3 wt% to 4.5 wt% enhanced cross-linking in the network, leading to a significant improvement in the strength (from 106 ± 8 kPa to 168 ± 12 kPa) and compressive modulus (from 50 ± 9 kPa to 102 ± 14 kPa) of hydrogels. Moreover, CS-OTA-Fe hydrogels revealed significant adhesive strength (87 ± 8 kPa) to the cow's skin tissue and cytocompatibility against L929 fibroblasts. Overall, multifunctional CS-OTA-Fe hydrogels with tunable mechanical properties, excellent tissue adhesive, self-healing ability, good cytocompatibility, and fast hemostasis and antibacterial properties could be promising candidates for biomedical applications.

Recent advances in chitosan-based materials; The synthesis, modifications and biomedical applications

The attention to polymer-based biomaterials, for instance, chitosan and its derivatives, as well as the techniques for using them in numerous scientific domains, is continuously rising. Chitosan is a decomposable naturally occurring polymeric material that is mostly obtained from seafood waste. Because of its special ecofriendly, biocompatible, non- toxic nature as well as antimicrobial properties, chitosan-based materials have received a lot of interest in the field of biomedical applications. The reactivity of chitosan is mainly because of the amino and hydroxyl groups in its composition, which makes it further fascinating for various uses, including biosensing, textile finishing, antimicrobial wound dressing, tissue engineering, bioimaging, gene, DNA and drug delivery and as a coating material for medical implants. This study is an overview of the different types of chitosan-based materials which now a days have been fabricated by applying different techniques and modifications that include etherification, esterification, crosslinking, graft copolymerization and o-acetylation etc. for hydroxyl groups' processes and acetylation, quaternization, Schiff's base reaction, and grafting for amino groups' reactions. Furthermore, this overview summarizes the literature from recent years related to the important applications of chitosan-based materials (i.e., thin films, nanocomposites or nanoparticles, sponges and hydrogels) in different biomedical applications.

Polymeric Membranes of Chitosan/Aloe Vera Gel Fabrication With Enhanced Swelling and Antimicrobial Properties for Biomedical Applications

Since ancient times, medicinal plants have been used as traditional medicine to treat a variety of ailments. Aloe vera (AV) gel's therapeutic potential is one of the most effective approach in the fabrication of functional materials. The current study aimed to prepare the AV and chitosan (CS) membranes using various cross-linkers that were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Visible) techniques, as well as swelling ratio and antimicrobial studies. SEM analysis revealed that the membrane is porous, with interconnected pores. The inclusion of AV contents in the membrane improved thermal stability and crystallinity. The swelling ratio of the ACPG-3 membrane with a 2:1 CS to AV ratio was 366%. The membranes showed promising antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and Pasteurella multocida strains. The findings revealed that polymeric CS/AV membranes have effective potential for use in the biomedical field.

High-Content Aloe vera Based Hydrogels: Physicochemical and Pharmaceutical Properties

The present research focuses on the physicochemical and pharmacotechnical properties of new hydrogels obtained using allantoin, xanthan gum, salicylic acid and different concentrations of Aloe vera (5, 10, 20% w/v in solution; 38, 56, 71 wt% in dry gels). The thermal behavior of Aloe vera composite hydrogels was studied using DSC and TG/DTG analyses. The chemical structure was investigated using different characterization methods (XRD, FTIR and Raman spectroscopies) and the morphology of the hydrogels was studied SEM and AFM microscopy. Pharmacotechnical evaluation on tensile strength and elongation, moisture content, swelling and spreadability was also completed. Physical evaluation confirmed that the appearance of the prepared Aloe vera based hydrogels was homogeneous and the color varied from pale beige to deep opaque beige with increasing Aloe vera concentration. All other evaluation parameters, e.g., pH, viscosity, spreadability and consistency were found to be adequate in all hydrogel formulations. SEM and AFM images show that the structure of the hydrogels condensed into homogeneous polymeric solids with the addition of Aloe vera, in accordance with the decrease in peak intensities observed via XRD analysis. These results suggest interactions between the hydrogel matrix and Aloe vera as observed via FTIR and TG/DTG and DSC analyses. Considering that Aloe vera content higher than 10% (w/v) did not stimulate further interactions, this formulation (FA-10) can be used for further biomedical applications.

Synthesis of mesoporous antimicrobial herbal nanomaterial-carrier for silver nanoparticles and antimicrobial sensing

Herbal nanoparticles (HNPs) were introduced as a novel generation of antimicrobial nanoparticles. But in the battle against superbugs we need nanostructures with boosted antimicrobial potency. So in the current experiment, for the first time a green approach was developed for the silver functionalization of HNPs which were fabricated from an antimicrobial herb Thymus vulgaris. Silver functionalized HNPs (AgHNPs) were found to be mesoporous and were further fortified with antimicrobial compounds. The resulted structures were re-tested against MRSA and P. aeruginosa as superbugs. It was found that silver functionalization can provide eight-fold increase in the antimicrobial potency of HNPs. Moreover, MIC was reduced from 20 mg/mL to 2.5 mg/mL. Another eight-fold reduction in the MIC (0.3 mg/mL) was achieved by fortification with antimicrobial compounds. So, the antimicrobial potency of HNPs was successfully increase approximately up to 64-folds. Obtained results illustrated that silver functionalization and fortification with antimicrobial compounds can be considered as effective approaches to achieve HNPs with boosted antimicrobial potency. These nanostructures have the potency to be loaded with other antimicrobial compound such as antibiotics toward synergistic effects of AgNPs and antibiotics. Resulted nanostructures can be employed in the formulation of powerful topical and surface disinfectants against superbugs. Also, these particles can be considered as a next generation of boosted antimicrobial nanostructures.

Materials in advanced design of personal protective equipment: a review

The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic has aroused tremendous attention toward personal protective equipment (PPE) in both scientific research and industrial manufacture. Despite decades of development in PPE design and fabrication, there's still much room for further optimization, in terms, of both protection performance and wear comfort. Interdisciplinary efforts have been devoted to this research field in recent years. Significantly, the innovation of materials, which brings about improved performance and versatile new functions for PPEs, has been widely adopted in PPE design. In this minireview, recent progress in the development of novel materials and structural designs for PPE application are presented in detail with the introduction of various material-based strategies for different PPE types, as well as the examples, which apply auxiliary components into face masks to enrich the functionalities and improve the personal feelings in the pandemic period.

Bioactivity of Chitosan-Based Particles Loaded with Plant-Derived Extracts for Biomedical Applications: Emphasis on Antimicrobial Fiber-Based Systems

Marine-derived chitosan (CS) is a cationic polysaccharide widely studied for its bioactivity, which is mostly attached to its primary amine groups. CS is able to neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) from the microenvironments in which it is integrated, consequently reducing cell-induced oxidative stress. It also acts as a bacterial peripheral layer hindering nutrient intake and interacting with negatively charged outer cellular components, which lead to an increase in the cell permeability or to its lysis. Its biocompatibility, biodegradability, ease of processability (particularly in mild conditions), and chemical versatility has fueled CS study as a valuable matrix component of bioactive small-scaled organic drug-delivery systems, with current research also showcasing CS’s potential within tridimensional sponges, hydrogels and sutures, blended films, nanofiber sheets and fabric coatings. On the other hand, renewable plant-derived extracts are here emphasized, given their potential as eco-friendly radical scavengers, microbicidal agents, or alternatives to antibiotics, considering that most of the latter have induced bacterial resistance because of excessive and/or inappropriate use. Loading them into small-scaled particles potentiates a strong and sustained bioactivity, and a controlled release, using lower doses of bioactive compounds. A pH-triggered release, dependent on CS’s protonation/deprotonation of its amine groups, has been the most explored stimulus for that control. However, the use of CS derivatives, crosslinking agents, and/or additional stabilization processes is enabling slower release rates, following extract diffusion from the particle matrix, which can find major applicability in fiber-based systems within ROS-enriched microenvironments and/or spiked with microbes. Research on this is still in its infancy. Yet, the few published studies have already revealed that the composition, along with an adequate drug release rate, has an important role in controlling an existing infection, forming new tissue, and successfully closing a wound. A bioactive finishing of textiles has also been promoting high particle infiltration, superior washing durability, and biological response.
