Particles-based medicated wound dressings: a comprehensive review

Wound healing is a dynamic process that is controlled by many factors. The interest in developing wound dressings capable of providing the required environment for the proper wound healing process is ever expanding, and particles occupy a sizable share of the research area. This comprehensive review reports 10 years of research in terms of current advances, delivery system evaluation, outcomes and future directions. The review follows a clearly defined method of article search and screening. Retrieved papers are reviewed regarding the materials, formulation development, and in vitro/in vivo testing of particles-based wound dressings. The review summarized the current status of medicated wound dressing research, identifies gaps to be addressed, and represents a reference for researchers working on wound dressings.

SF/PVP nanofiber wound dressings loaded with phlorizin: preparation, characterization, in vivo and in vitro evaluation

Electrospinning-based wound dressings have multiple functions such as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and therapeutic, and are important in skin wound care. Herein, we designed a phlorizin (PHL)-loaded silk protein/polyvinylpyrrolidone (SF/PVP) composite nanofibrous membrane, which can be used as multiple wound dressings. In particular, SF/PVP/PHL scaffolds have high porosity and mechanical properties, exhibiting suitable permeability and hydrophilicity. The SF/PVP/PHL scaffolds containing PHL also have excellent antibacterial and antioxidant activities. Furthermore, the nanofiber significantly accelerated the wound healing process in a full-thickness skin injury model by enhancing wound re-epithelialization and collagen deposition density, increasing the content of macrophage antigen (CD68), platelet-endothelial cell adhesion molecule (CD31), proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and inhibiting the expression of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) at the wound site. The mechanism may be related to the inhibition of activation of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/serine-threonine kinase/ target of rapamycin (PI3K/AKT/mTOR) signaling pathway to enhance autophagy. Therefore, SF/PVP/PHL nanofibers can ideally meet the various requirements of the wound healing process and are promising wound dressing candidates for future clinical applications.

Hybrid Nanosystems for Biomedical Applications

Inorganic/organic hybrid nanosystems have been increasingly developed for their versatility and efficacy at overcoming obstacles not readily surmounted by nonhybridized counterparts. Currently, hybrid nanosystems are implemented for gene therapy, drug delivery, and phototherapy in addition to tissue regeneration, vaccines, antibacterials, biomolecule detection, imaging probes, and theranostics. Though diverse, these nanosystems can be classified according to foundational inorganic/organic components, accessory moieties, and architecture of hybridization. Within this Review, we begin by providing a historical context for the development of biomedical hybrid nanosystems before describing the properties, synthesis, and characterization of their component building blocks. Afterward, we introduce the architectures of hybridization and highlight recent biomedical nanosystem developments by area of application, emphasizing hybrids of distinctive utility and innovation. Finally, we draw attention to ongoing clinical trials before recapping our discussion of hybrid nanosystems and providing a perspective on the future of the field.
