Abstract
Oxidative stress caused due to the perturbations in the oxidant-antioxidant system can damage molecules and cause cellular alteration leading to the pathogenesis of multiple diseases. This study was designed and performed to investigate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of an alkaloid, gramine on H2O2-induced oxidative stress on HEK 293 cells. Cell viability and morphometric analysis of cells treated with H2O2 and gramine were studied. Oxidative stress and inflammatory and antioxidant enzymes such as ROS, LPO, NO, SOD, GSH, and CAT were analyzed. Furthermore, mRNA expression of SOD, CAT, and COX-2 was also evaluated. H2O2 at concentration > 0.3 mM and gramine at concentration > 80 μg/mL affect the proliferation. Viability and morphometric analysis showed that gramine has protective effects. Treating cells with gramine suppressed oxidative stress and inflammatory enzymes, whereas antioxidant enzymes were enhanced. SOD and CAT mRNA levels were overexpressed and COX-2 mRNA levels were decreased in the treated groups. Gramine possesses effective antioxidant potential and can regulate oxidative stress and damages associated with it.

Abstract
Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) leafy greens (QLGs) are plant-based foods of high nutritional value that have been scarcely studied. In this work, the nutritional and functional composition of three QLGs varieties was evaluated. A protein content higher than 35 g 100 g-1 dw with a well-balanced essential amino acid composition was found making them a good source of vegetable protein. In addition, elevated contents of dietary fibre and minerals, higher than those detected in quinoa seeds and other leafy vegetables, were found. The lipid profile showed higher contents of linoleic (C18:2, ω6) (20.2 %) and linolenic acids (C18:3, ω3) (52.8 %) with low ω6/ ω3 ratios (∼0.4/1). A total sugar content <1 g 100 g-1 dw was found for all varieties tested, lower than that obtained in seeds. The saponin content varied between 0.76 and 0.87 %. Also, high values of total phenolic compounds (969.8-1195.4 mg gallic acid 100 g-1), mainly hydroxycinnamic acids and flavonoids, and great antioxidant activities (7.64-8.90 g Trolox kg-1) were found. Multivariate analysis here used allowed us to classify the samples according to the quinoa variety evaluated, and the sequential stepwise multiple regression applied revealed that the PUFA and sucrose contents negatively influenced the protein content while the palmitic acid content affected positively this parameter. Overall, this study shows that QLGs are promising nutritious and functional plant-based foods supporting the necessity of promoting their cultivation, commercialization, and consumption.

Antiulcerogenic Potential of the Ethanolic Extract of Ceiba speciosa (A. St.-Hil.) Ravenna Evaluated by In Vitro and In Vivo Studies. Int J Mol Sci 2022; 23:ijms232415634. Abstract
Gastrointestinal diseases, such as peptic ulcers, are caused by a damage in the gastric mucosa provoked by several factors. This stomach injury is regulated by many inflammatory mediators and is commonly treated with proton-pump inhibitors, histamine H2 receptor blockers and antacids. However, various medicinal plants have demonstrated positive effects on gastric ulcer treatment, including plants of the Ceiba genus. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antiulcer and anti-inflammatory activities of the stem bark ethanolic extract of Ceiba speciosa (A. St.-Hil.) Ravenna. We performed a preliminary quantification of phenolic compounds by high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection (HPLC-DAD), followed by the prospection of other chemical groups through nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. A set of in vitro assays was used to evaluate the extract potential regarding its antioxidant activity (DPPH: 19.83 ± 0.34 µg/mL; TPC: 307.20 ± 6.20 mg GAE/g of extract), effects on cell viability and on the release of TNF-α in whole human blood. Additionally, in vivo assays were performed to evaluate the leukocyte accumulation and total protein quantification in carrageenan-induced air pouch, as well as the antiulcerogenic effect of the extract on an ethanol-induced ulcer in rats. The extract contains flavonoids and phenolic compounds, as well as sugars and quinic acid derivatives exhibiting potent antioxidant activity and low toxicity. The extract reduced the release of TNF-α in human blood and inhibited the activity of p38α (1.66 µg/mL), JAK3 (5.25 µg/mL), and JNK3 (8.34 µg/mL). Moreover, it reduced the leukocyte recruitment on the pouch exudate and the formation of edema, reverting the effects caused by carrageenan. The extract presented a significant prevention of ulcer formation and a higher reduction than the reference drug, Omeprazole. Therefore, C. speciosa extract has demonstrated relevant therapeutic potential for the treatment of gastric diseases, deserving the continuation of further studies to unveil the mechanisms of action of plant bioactive ingredients.

Abstract
The present investigation was carried out to understand the impact of carbon and nitrogen metabolism in quinoa genotypes IC411824, IC411825, EC507747 and EC507742 during pre-anthesis stage. It was observed that activities of acid invertase, sucrose synthase (cleavage) and sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) increased up to 75 days after sowing (DAS) and this might be responsible for providing reducing sugars for the development of vegetative parts. Enhanced activities of nitrate reductase, glutamate synthase, glutamine synthetase during vegetative growth of leaves and stem at 90 DAS assist the fixation of ammonia on glutamate molecule to synthesize amino acids at early stages. However, the glutamate dehydrogenase and nitrite reductase play a central role in the re-assimilation of amides from the amino group of asparaginase. As a result, these photosynthetic products will be responsible for providing both the energy and the C-skeletons for ammonium assimilation during amino acid biosynthesis. Leaves and stem of IC411824 and IC411825 had higher total phenol and total flavonoid content. DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity was found to be higher in leaves of IC411825 and in stem of IC411824 and IC411825 indicating their capability to act as natural antioxidants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adipose tissue is a major endocrine organ capable of releasing inflammatory adipokines that are linked to changes occurring in the overfed state, where tissue remodeling results in hypertrophic adipocytes that recruit monocytes to infiltrate the tissue and take on an inflammatory phenotype. Increases in macrophage-specific inflammatory mediator levels contribute to the inflamed state and worsen the inflammatory loop between the macrophages and adipocytes. Although most inflammatory adipokines are released by macrophages, adipocytes can also release immunomodulatory adipokines, such as leptin. The objective of this research was to determine if co-incubation of activated macrophages with mature adipocytes, using transwell inserts, affected adipocyte leptin release. We also examined if there were differences in levels of cell-secreted products quantified in cell-conditioned media collected from macrophage-containing (transwell insert) and adipocyte-containing (well) compartments. METHODS Mature adipocytes were co-incubated with control and lipopolysaccharide-stimulated (0.01 mg/ml) murine macrophages, and nitric oxide, interleukin-6, and leptin levels were quantified in the cell-conditioned media from both compartments. RESULTS Activation status of the macrophages did not affect leptin release by the adipocytes. We observed higher amounts of leptin in wells compared to transwells. Nitric oxide and interleukin-6 levels were similar between transwells and wells, suggesting that these adipokines travel through the transwell inserts and are reaching equilibrium between the two compartments. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that co-incubating activated macrophages and adipocytes using transwell inserts can result in distinct microenvironments in the different cellular compartments and that separate sampling of these compartments is required to detect the subtle signaling dynamics that exist between these cells. Abstract
Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is a nutrient-rich grain native to South America and eaten worldwide as a healthy food, sometimes even referred to as a ”superfood”. Like quinoa grains, quinoa greens (green leaves, sprouts, and microgreens) are also rich in nutrients and have health promoting properties such as being antimicrobial, anticancer, antidiabetic, antioxidant, antiobesity, and cardio-beneficial. Quinoa greens are gluten-free and provide an excellent source of protein, amino acids, essential minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids. Quinoa greens represent a promising value-added vegetable that could resolve malnutrition problems and contribute to food and nutritional security. The greens can be grown year-round (in the field, high tunnel, and greenhouse) and have short growth durations. In addition, quinoa is salt-, drought-, and cold-tolerant and requires little fertilizer and water to grow. Nevertheless, consumption of quinoa greens as leafy vegetables is uncommon. To date, only a few researchers have investigated the nutritional properties, phytochemical composition, and human health benefits of quinoa greens. We undertook a comprehensive review of the literature on quinoa greens to explore their nutritional and functional significance to human health and to bring awareness to their use in human diets.

Abstract
Iron-porphyrin is a very important substance in organisms, especially in animals. It is not only the source of iron in human body, but is also the catalytic center of many reactions. Previous studies suggested that adequate intake of iron was important for the health of human, especially for children and pregnant women. However, associated diseases caused by iron over-intake and excessive meat consumption suggested its potential harmfulness for human health. During meat processing, Iron-porphyrin will cause the oxidation of proteins and fatty acids. In the gastrointestinal tract, iron-porphyrin can induce the production of malondialdehyde, fats oxidation, and indirectly cause oxidation of amino acids and nitrates etc. Iron-porphyrin enters the intestinal tract and disturbs the balance of intestinal flora. Finally, some common measures for inhibiting its activity are introduced, including the use of chelating agent, antioxidants, competitive inhibitor, etc., as well as give the hypothesis that sodium chloride increases the catalytic activity of iron-porphyrin. The purpose of this review is to present an overview of current knowledge about the changes of iron-porphyrin in the whole technico- and gastrointesto- processing axis and to provide ideas for further research in meat nutrition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Plant-derived phytochemicals such as flavonoids have been explored to be powerful antioxidants that protect against oxidative stress-related diseases. In the present study, Morin, a flavonoid compound was studied for its antioxidant and antidiabetic properties in relation to oxidative stress in insulin resistant models conducted in rat skeletal muscle L6 cell line model. METHODS Evaluation of antioxidant property of morin was assayed using in vitro methods such as cell viability by MTT assay, estimation of SOD and CAT activity and NO scavenging activity. The anti-oxidative nature of morin on L6 cell line was conducted by the DCF-DA fluorescent activity. Glucose uptake in morin treated L6 myotubes are accessed by 2-NBDG assay in the presence or absence of IRTK and PI3K inhibitors. Further glycogen content estimation due to the morin treatment in L6 myotubes was performed. Antioxidant and insulin signaling pathway gene expression was examined over RT-PCR analysis. RESULTS Morin has a negligible cytotoxic effect at doses of 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 µM concentration according to cell viability assay. Morin revealed that the levels of the antioxidant enzymes SOD and CAT in L6 myotubes had increased. When the cells were subjected to the nitro blue tetrazolium assay, morin lowered reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation at 60 µM concentration displaying 39% ROS generation in oxidative stress condition. Lesser NO activity and a drop in green fluorescence emission in the DCFDA assay, demonstrating its anti-oxidative nature by reducing ROS formation in vitro. Glucose uptake by the L6 myotube cells using 2-NBDG, and with IRTK and PI3K inhibitors (genistein and wortmannin) showed a significant increase in glucose uptake by the cells which shows the up regulated GLUT-4 movement from intracellular pool to the plasma membrane. Morin (60 µM) significantly enhanced the expression of antioxidant genes GPx, GST and GCS as well as insulin signalling genes IRTK, IRS-1, PI3K, GLUT-4, GSK-3β and GS in L6 myotubes treated cells. CONCLUSION Morin has the ability to act as an anti-oxidant by lowering ROS levels and demonstrating insulin mimetic activity by reversing insulin resistance associated with oxidative stress.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the bio-accessibility of the phenolics and flavonoid, the polyphenolic profile and the antioxidant activity of sprouts obtained from four different quinoa genotypes and one djulis cultivar during in vitro gastrointestinal digestion. Compared to their content in sprouts, the bioavailable phenolics after the oral phase, the gastric phase, the intestinal phase, and in the dialyzable fraction were in the ranges of 45.7%-63.5%, 87.6%-116.7%, 89.6%-124.5%, and 7.4%-10.9%, respectively. The trend in flavonoid bio-accessibility was similar to the polyphenols. The dialyzable flavonoid recoveries varied between 4.2% and 12.4%. Correspondingly, the free radical scavenging activity of the dialyzable phase decreased significantly from 84.7% to 96.5%. The main phenolic acids were vanillic acid, caffeic acid, and syringic acid during digestion. The results suggest that gastrointestinal digestion greatly affected the absorption of polyphenols and flavonoid of quinoa and djulis sprouts, as well as their antioxidant capacity.

Abstract
Introduction Watermelon is one of the commonly eaten fruit in most homes in Nigeria and has been used in the management of diabetes mellitus traditionally. This study was carried out to explore the antidiabetic potential of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) juice in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Methods Watermelon juice was used for the determination of in vitro parameters such as 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazil (DPPH), nitric oxide and ferric reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP) as well as phytochemicals such as total phenol, total flavonoids. In vitro, α-glucosidase and α-amylase inhibitory activities were also accessed using standard procedures. Diabetes was induced in the rats by a single intraperitoneal (I.P) injection of freshly prepared alloxan (150 mg/kg body weight). The animals were randomly grouped into five groups of normal control, untreated diabetic control, diabetic rats administered 200 mg/kg body weight of metformin, diabetic rats administered 500 mg/kg body weight of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) juice and diabetic rats administered 1000 mg/kg body weight of watermelon juice. The rats were sacrificed on the 14th day of the experiment and various in vivo biochemical parameters were also evaluated in the serum and tissue homogenates of diabetic rats. Results The watermelon juice exhibits anti-oxidant properties and inhibitory activities against α-glucosidase and α-amylase in a dose-dependent manner. Added to this, the administration of different doses of the watermelon juice significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the fasting blood glucose level, serum lipid profile, glucose-6-phosphatase, lipid peroxidation and anti-inflammatory activities in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. There was a significant (p < 0.05) increase in antioxidant enzyme activities, hexokinase activity as well as glucose transporters (GLUT 2 and GLUT 4) levels in diabetic rats administered different doses of Citrullus lanatus. Conclusion Taken together, this study demonstrates that watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) juice exhibits its antidiabetic potential in experimental diabetic animal model via multiple pathways involving modulation of glucose transporters, anti-inflammatory activities as well as antioxidant defense system and inhibition of α-glucosidase and α-amylase. This suggests that the watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) juice may have a useful clinical application in the management of diabetes mellitus and its metabolic complications if developed as adjuvant therapy.

Abstract
Galangin, a natural flavonol, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidative potential. However, the cytoprotective effects of galangin against oxidative-induced aging in human fibroblasts have not been well studied. IGF-1 signaling pathway is associated with the control of aging and longevity in human. The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of galangin on human skin fibroblast HS68 cells under H2 O2 exposure to induce aging. In this study, we demonstrate that galangin could decrease the levels of pro-inflammatory proteins and enhanced collagen formation through promoting the IGF-1R pathway. Furthermore, aging markers such as senescence-associated β-galactosidase p53, p21Cip1/WAF1 , and p16INK4A were upregulated under H2 O2 exposure and galangin could reverse its effects. Taken together, these data indicated that anti-inflammatory and antiaging activities of galangin may be mediated through the IGF-1R signaling pathway. These findings may provide the evidence for galangin to develop as an antiwrinkle product on human skin.

Influence of Drying Temperature on Phenolic Acids Composition and Antioxidant Activity of Sprouts and Leaves of White and Red Quinoa. J CHEM-NY 2019. Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of drying temperature on the phenolic acids profile and antioxidant activity of sprouts and leaves red and white Chenopodium quinoa (RQ and WQ, respectively). Four-day sprouts and leaves dried at 30, 45, and 60°C were tested. All sprouts contained significant amounts of phenolic compounds; however, higher content was determined in the RQ sprouts. Phenolic compounds from WQ sprouts seem to be thermostable in the studied temperature range, whereas total phenolics content in RQ sprouts decreased significantly after drying in the 60°C. Content of vanillic and p-coumaric acids did not differ significantly between sprouts dried at the same conditions; however, their level decreased in the high temperature. Irrespective of the drying temperature, higher activity against ABTS free radicals and reducing power was observed in the case of RQ sprouts extracts. Sprouts dried at 30°C had a higher ability to scavenge hydroxyl radicals. RQ sprouts were characterized by about two times higher antioxidant activity regardless of the method used. No significant differences between total phenolics (TPC) and flavonoids content in RQ and LQ leaves were found. In the both cases, decrease of TPC was observed after drying in the highest temperature. The leaves do not differ too much in terms of the phenolic acids profile, whereas the differentiating factor is thermal processing. Leaves of both quinoa contained thermostable compounds able to scavenge hydroxyl radicals. Reducing power and ability to scavenge OH radicals were correlated with all components of quinoa sprouts which suggest synergism between them and does not indicate the key role of a particular compound in creating antioxidant capacity. Germination and subsequent oven-drying at 30°C of quinoa seeds significantly increased the antioxidant properties compared with raw seeds. Also, in the case of leaves, the best results were obtained after drying at 30°C.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Little research focuses on the association between herpes zoster and oral corticosteroids use in older adults. The aim of the study was to explore this issue. METHODS We performed a case-control study using the database of the Taiwan National Health Insurance Program. There were 10,912 participants aged 65 years and older with newly diagnosed herpes zoster in 2000-2013 as the cases. We randomly selected 42,676 sex-matched and age-matched participants without herpes zoster as the controls. Ever use of oral corticosteroids was defined as participants who at least had a prescription for oral corticosteroids before the index date. Never use was defined as participants who did not have a prescription for oral corticosteroids before the index date. The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for herpes zoster associated with oral corticosteroids use were estimated using the logistic regression model. RESULTS The adjusted OR of herpes zoster was 3.13 for participants with ever use of oral corticosteroids (95% CI 2.84-3.46), compared with never use. In a further analysis, the adjusted ORs of herpes zoster were 3.10 for cumulative duration of oral corticosteroids use < 12 months (95% CI 2.81-3.42) and 3.65 for cumulative duration ≥ 12 months (95% CI 3.20-4.18). CONCLUSIONS Older adults with oral corticosteroids use are associated with a threefold increase in odds of herpes zoster in Taiwan. There is a duration-related effect of oral corticosteroids use on the risk of herpes zoster.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE Little research is available on the relationship between weight loss and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in Taiwan. We hope to evaluate whether weight loss could be an early clinical feature of undiagnosed HIV infection in Taiwan. METHODS We conducted a retrospective population-based cohort study using the database of the Taiwan National Health Insurance (NHI) Program. There were 4748 male subjects aged 1-84 with newly diagnosed weight loss as the weight loss group from 1998-2012 and 18982 age-matched male subjects without weight loss as the non-weight loss group. The incidence of HIV infection at the end of 2013 was measured in both groups. The multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to measure the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for HIV risk associated with weight loss. RESULTS The overall incidence of HIV infection was 3.79-fold higher in the weight loss group than in the non-weight loss group (6.83 vs. 1.80 per 10000 person-years, 95% CI 3.41, 4.21). The incidence was the highest during the first 6 months of follow-up in the weight loss group (39.0 per 10000 person-years). After adjusting for confounding factors, the adjusted HR of HIV infection was 3.63 (95% CI 1.77, 7.44) for the weight loss group, compared with the non-weight loss group. CONCLUSION Weight loss might be an early clinical feature of undiagnosed HIV infection in Taiwan. Male patients with weight loss who have risk factors for HIV infection should be recommended to regularly be tested for HIV infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE Little research is currently available on the relationship between weight loss and pulmonary tuberculosis in Taiwan. This study aimed to evaluate whether weight loss is an early clinical feature of pulmonary tuberculosis in Taiwan. METHOD This population-based retrospective cohort study was conducted using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Program database. There were 6051 subjects aged 20 to 84 years with newly diagnosed weight loss from 2000 to 2012 as the weight loss group, and 24081 randomly selected subjects without weight loss from the same period as the non-weight loss group. The weight loss and the non-weight loss groups were matched by sex, age, and comorbidities. The incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis at the end of 2013 was evaluated in both groups. A multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to evaluate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for association of pulmonary tuberculosis with weight loss. RESULTS The incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis was 15.2-fold higher in the weight loss group than in the non-weight loss group during the first 3 months of follow-up (22.8 vs. 1.50 per 1000 person-years, 95% CI 13.7, 16.9). After adjusting for covariables, the subsequent HR of pulmonary tuberculosis was 2.36 for the weight loss group (95 % CI 1.88, 2.97), compared with the non-weight loss group. CONCLUSION Although our finding is not novel, it does support the notion that weight loss is significantly associated with increased hazard of pulmonary tuberculosis in Taiwan. The risk was found to be particularly high during the first 3 months of follow-up.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM There are no epidemiological studies focusing on the association between oral corticosteroid use and pyogenic liver abscesses. The aim of the study was to assess whether oral corticosteroid use is associated with increased odds of pyogenic liver abscesses in adults in Taiwan. METHODS This retrospective population-based case-control study was conducted to analyze the database of the Taiwan National Health Insurance Program from 2000 to 2013. Subjects aged 20 to 84 years with their first episode of pyogenic liver abscesses were assigned as the cases (n = 881). Randomly selected subjects without pyogenic liver abscesses aged 20 to 84 years were selected as the controls (n = 3207). A multivariable logistic regression model was used to assess the odds ratio and 95% confidence interval for the correlation of oral corticosteroid use with pyogenic liver abscesses. RESULTS After regulating for confounders, the adjusted odds ratio of pyogenic liver abscesses was 1.40 for subjects currently using oral corticosteroids (95% confidence interval 1.14, 1.70), compared with subjects who never used them. Upon further analysis, the adjusted odds ratio of pyogenic liver abscesses was 1.03 for subjects with current use of oral corticosteroids when increasing dosage for every one mg (95% CI 1.01, 1.06). CONCLUSION Although the findings are not unexpected, they are important because they suggest that current use of oral corticosteroids is significantly associated with increased odds of developing pyogenic liver abscesses in adults in Taiwan, with a dose-dependent effect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Few systematic studies focus on the association between weight loss and pyogenic liver abscesses. The objective of the study was to assess the association between weight loss and pyogenic liver abscesses in adults in Taiwan. METHODS This population-based cohort study utilized the database of the Taiwan National Health Insurance Program. Totally, 8453 subjects aged 20 to 84 years with newly diagnosed weight loss between 2000 and 2012 were assigned as the weight loss group, and 33777 randomly selected subjects without weight loss were assigned as the non-weight loss group. Both the weight loss and the non-weight loss groups were matched according to sex, age, and comorbidities. The incidence of pyogenic liver abscesses at the end of 2013 was measured in both groups. RESULTS A multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression model was done and presented evidence that the adjusted HR of pyogenic liver abscess was 2.47 (95 %CI 1.21, 5.02) for those subjects with weight loss and without comorbidities, as compared with those subjects without weight loss and without comorbidities. Among the weight loss group, 5% developed pyogenic liver abscesses within 3 months. CONCLUSION Weight loss is associated with pyogenic liver abscesses in adults. Yet weight loss might not be an early clinical symptom of undiagnosed pyogenic liver abscesses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Little is known about the association between tamoxifen usage and risk of Parkinson's disease in women with breast cancer. The present study aimed to evaluate the association between tamoxifen usage and Parkinson's disease in older women with breast cancer in Taiwan. METHODS We conducted a retrospective nationwide case-control study using the database of the Taiwan National Health Insurance Program. In total, 293 female subjects with breast cancer, aged 65 years and above, who were newly diagnosed with Parkinson's disease between 2000 and 2011 were included. Additionally, 1053 female subjects with breast cancer aged 65 years and above without Parkinson's disease were randomly selected as controls. Both cases and controls were matched for age and comorbidities. Ever use of tamoxifen was defined as subjects who had at least a prescription for tamoxifen before the index date, whereas never use of tamoxifen was defined as those who never had a prescription for tamoxifen before the index date. We used the unconditional logistic regression model to calculate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the association between tamoxifen usage and risk of Parkinson's disease. RESULTS After adjusting for confounding variables, the adjusted OR of Parkinson's disease was 3.32 for subjects with ever use of tamoxifen (95% CI, 2.50-4.43), compared with nonusers. Further analysis showed that the adjusted ORs of Parkinson's disease were 3.21 (95% CI, 2.29-4.49), 3.95 (95% CI, 2.77-5.64), and 11.4 (95% CI, 2.63-49.7) for subjects with < 2, 2-6, and ≥ 6 years of cumulative tamoxifen usage, respectively, when compared with nonusers. CONCLUSIONS Tamoxifen usage was associated with a 3.32-fold increase in the likelihood of having Parkinson's disease among older women with breast cancer in Taiwan.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Few studies have reported the association of the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) with acute pancreatitis. We conducted a population-based case-control study to explore this relationship. METHODS In this study, 4631 cases with first attack of acute pancreatitis and 4631 controls without acute pancreatitis were selected using a randomly sampled cohort of one million health insurance enrollees from 2000 to 2013. Both cases and controls were aged 20-84 years and were matched with sex, age, comorbidities, and index year of diagnosis of acute pancreatitis. Patients with current use of SSRIs were defined as those whose last tablet of SSRIs was noted ≤ 7 days before the date of diagnosis of acute pancreatitis; patients with late use of SSRIs were defined as those whose last tablet of SSRIs was noted ≥ 8 days before the date of diagnosis; and patients with no use of SSRIs were defined as those who were never prescribed SSRIs. The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for acute pancreatitis associated with the use of SSRIs were assessed using multivariate unconditional logistic regression analysis. RESULTS After adjusting for covariables, multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that compared with patients with no use of SSRIs, the adjusted OR of acute pancreatitis for those with current use of SSRIs was 1.7 (95% CI, 1.1-2.5), whereas that for patients with late use of SSRIs was 1.0 (95% CI, 0.9-1.2) without statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS Current use of SSRIs is associated with the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis. Therefore, clinicians should consider the possibility of SSRI-associated acute pancreatitis among patients currently taking SSRIs and those presenting with the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis without a definite cause.
