Abstract
Bottom-up materials design by the conceiving of new molecular building blocks is powerful and chemists are uniquely qualified to innovate. Liquid crystals (LCs) and related soft crystals, collectively called mesophases, naturally create materials with dynamic properties. The thermotropic LC state has a liquid-like intermolecular disorder, but the cooperative nature of these materials facilitates a long-range directional order (alignment) that couples strongly to applied electric/magnetic fields and interfaces. Thermotropic LCs are held together by mesogen cores, which are often unsaturated with anisotropic polarizability, and are appended with flexible (often n-alkane) side chains. Thermal excitation of the side chains produces large amplitude motions that drive a melting transition, and the anisotropic attractions between mesogenic cores produce a directional organization that produces the LC order. LCs are liquids as defined by thermodynamics and may not contain three-dimensional (3D) organization. However, in many cases there are 3D ordered phases below the melting temperatures, which are soft (deformable) plastic materials. Unconventional mesogens offer opportunities to create responsive molecular assemblies with optical, electronic, or magnetic activity. I will detail in this account my efforts to control these dynamic states with the goal of creating polar organizations in columnar LCs. The use of molecular shape, dative bonding, and dynamic correlations between molecules in fluid/plastic phases will be highlighted and how applied electric fields can polarize select materials.

Abstract
Designing sensors for toxic compounds such as mercury salts in aqueous solutions still remains one of the most pressing tasks of modern chemical research, since many existing systems do not show enough sensitivity and/or response. In this regard, the opportunities offered by supramolecular approaches can be used to improve both these characteristics by creating a new self-organized smart system. Herein, we show that barium cations, that according to the data of X-ray standing waves do not bind directly to the ionophore molecules in the monolayers at the air/water interface, could be used to efficiently preorganize such molecules to achieve supramolecular architecture. We demonstrate that such preorganization ensures both low analyte detection threshold and high fluorescent response. We reveal the interrelation of the monolayer structure and receptor characteristics of a sensory system and show that such cation-induced preorganization in Langmuir monolayers of a hemicyanine dithia-aza-crown-substituted chromoionophore inhibits the formation of non-fluorescent aggregates with low receptor function, and allows the quantitative detection of mercury cations using a ratiometric fluorometric approach.

Abstract
The synthesis, structural, and retrostructural analysis of two libraries containing 16 first and second generation C(3)-symmetric self-assembling dendrimers based on dendrons connected at their apex via trisesters and trisamides of 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid is reported. A combination of X-ray diffraction and CD/UV analysis methods demonstrated that their C(3)-symmetry modulates different degrees of packing on the periphery of supramolecular structures that are responsible for the formation of chiral helical supramolecular columns and spheres self-organizable in a diversity of three-dimensional (3D) columnar, tetragonal, and cubic lattices. Two of these periodic arrays, a 3D columnar hexagonal superlattice and a 3D columnar simple orthorhombic chiral lattice with P222(1) symmetry, are unprecedented for supramolecular dendrimers. A thermal-reversible inversion of chirality was discovered in helical supramolecular columns. This inversion is induced, on heating, by the change in symmetry from a 3D columnar simple orthorhombic chiral lattice to a 3D columnar hexagonal array and, on cooling, by the change in symmetry from a 2D hexagonal to a 2D centered rectangular lattice, both exhibiting intracolumnar order. A first-order transition from coupled columns with long helical pitch, to weakly or uncorrelated columns with short helical pitch that generates a molecular rotator, was also discovered. The torsion angles of the molecular rotator are proportional to the change in temperature, and this effect is amplified in the case of the C(3)-symmetric trisamide supramolecular dendrimers forming H-bonds along their column. The structural changes reported here can be used to design complex functions based on helical supramolecular dendrimers with different degree of packing on their periphery.

Abstract
A molecular model of cubic building blocks is used to describe the mesomorphism of conical fullerenomesogens. Calculations based on density functional molecular theory and on Monte Carlo computer simulations give qualitatively similar results that are also in good agreement with the experimentally observed mesomorphic behaviour. The columnar and lamellar mesophases obtained are non-polar, and their relative stability is controlled by a single model parameter representing the softness of the repulsive interactions among the building blocks of the conical molecules.

Abstract
The structure of hexacatenar bent-shape molecules has been systematically modified in order to determine the main molecular factors responsible for the appearance of the axially polar columnar mesophase. It was found that the stability of the polar phase is very sensitive to the subtle modifications of the molecular shape: the phase is solely preserved if the modification is made at the terminal parts of the mesogenic core, whilst any other modifications destabilize the phase. It can be concluded that the main factor driving the transition between the phase made of flat supramolecular discs and the axially polar phase made of the cone-like units is the ability to fulfill close packing conditions in order to eliminate voids between neighboring molecular rigid cores.

Abstract
Semifluorinated first-generation self-assembling dendrons attached via a flexible spacer to electron-donor molecules induce pi-stacking of the donors in the center of a supramolecular helical pyramidal column. These helical pyramidal columns self-organize in various columnar liquid crystal phases that mediate self-processing of large single crystal liquid crystal domains of columns and self-repair their intracolumnar structural defects. In addition, all supramolecular columns exhibit a columnar phase at lower temperatures that maintains the helical pyramidal columnar supramolecular structure and displays higher intracolumnar order than that in the liquid crystals phases. The results described here demonstrate the universality of this concept, the power of the fluorous phase or the fluorophobic effect in self-assembly and the unexpected generality of pyramidal liquid crystals.

Abstract
A bent-shaped bipyridine ligand containing a dendritic aliphatic side chain has been synthesized as a ligand and complexed with silver ion through a self-assembling process. The resulting complexes were observed to self-assemble into supramolecular structures that differ significantly as a function of the counteranion size in the solid state, as confirmed by 1-D and 2-D X-ray diffraction experiments. The secondary structure of a cationic coordination chain appears to be dependent on the size of the counteranion. As the size of anion increases, the secondary structure of the coordination chain changes, from a helical chain, via a dimeric cycle, to a zigzag chain in the solid state. Interestingly, dilute solutions of the complexes exhibiting a columnar structure in polar solvents undergo spontaneous gelation and the resulting gels display a significant Cotton effect in the chromophore of the aromatic unit. These results represent a significant example that small variation in the anion size can provide a useful strategy to manipulate the secondary structure of linear chain and thereby solid-state supramolecular structure.
