Abstract
RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE Growth failure is a common problem among children with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Reduced height is associated with psychosocial burden, social stigma, and impaired quality of life. This study describes the aspects of growth impairment that are most impactful from the perspectives of children with CKD, their parents, and health professionals. STUDY DESIGN Qualitative study. SETTINGS & PARTICIPANTS 120 children with CKD (aged 8-21 years), 250 parents, and 445 health professionals from 53 countries who participated in 16 focus groups, 2 consensus workshops, and a Delphi survey. ANALYTICAL APPROACH A thematic analysis of all qualitative data concerning growth from the Standardized Outcomes in Nephrology-Children and Adolescents (SONG-Kids) initiative. RESULTS We identified 5 themes: diminishing psychological well-being (compared to and judged by peers, tired of explaining to others, damaging self-esteem), constrained life participation and enjoyment (deprived of normal school experiences, excluded from sports or competing at a disadvantage, impaired quality of life in adulthood); grappling with impacts of symptoms and treatment (difficulty understanding short stature and accessing help, lack of appetite, uncertainty regarding bone pains, medication side effects, burden of growth hormone treatment); facilitating timely interventions and optimizing outcomes (early indicator of disease, assessing management, maximizing transplant outcomes, minimizing morbidity); and keeping growth and health priorities in perspective (quality of life and survival of utmost priority, achieved adequate height). LIMITATIONS Only English-speaking participants were included. CONCLUSIONS Impaired growth may diminish psychological well-being, self-esteem, and participation in daily activities for children with CKD. Balancing different treatments that can affect growth complicates decision making. These findings may inform the psychosocial support needed by children with CKD and their caregivers to address concerns about growth. PLAIN-LANGUAGE SUMMARY Children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are often much shorter than their peers and may experience poorer mental health and quality of life. To understand the specific important issues on how growth impairment affects these children, we collected qualitative data from the Standardized Outcomes in Nephrology-Children and Adolescents (SONG-Kids) initiative and analyzed perspectives on growth from patients, parents, and health professionals. These data revealed impaired psychological health, reduced enjoyment during school and sports, difficulty dealing with medication side effects and growth hormone treatment, and concerns related to tracking health status and kidney transplant outcomes. These findings may inform the psychosocial support needed by children with CKD and their caregivers to address concerns about growth and overall health.

Abstract
For children and young adults, living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) poses physical, mental, and social challenges. The mental health functioning of children and adolescents with CKD plays an important role in the medical, educational, vocational, and quality of life outcomes, yet receives little systematic attention in the busy pediatric nephrology clinic. This article will provide an overview of the prevalence of mental illness and symptoms in children and young adults with CKD, strategies to assess for dysfunction, and the long-term outcomes associated with impaired functioning. While there is a relative dearth of literature regarding evidence-based interventions in this population to improve mental health functioning, we provide "best practice" strategies based on the available literature to address emotional and/or behavioral challenges once they are identified. More research is needed to define appropriate interventions to alleviate mental health issues and social-emotional distress, and this review of the literature will serve to provide directions for future research.

Abstract
The outcomes reported in trials across all stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD) are highly variable and often do not include outcomes that are directly relevant to patients and caregivers. Frequently, the outcomes reported in trials are often unvalidated surrogate biochemical end points. The omission of outcomes that are meaningful and important to patients can diminish the value of trials in supporting treatment decisions. In response, there have been increasing efforts across many health and medical disciplines to develop core outcome sets, defined as the minimum set of outcomes to be reported in all trials in a specific health area to improve the relevance and consistency of reporting trial outcomes. The international Standardized Outcomes in Nephrology (SONG) initiative was established in 2014 and has since developed seven core outcome sets for different diagnosis and treatment stages of CKD. The core outcomes were based on consensus among patients, caregivers, and health professionals. Each core outcome set includes at least one patient-reported outcome, including fatigue (hemodialysis), life participation (kidney transplantation, peritoneal dialysis, early CKD not yet requiring kidney replacement therapy, children and adolescents, and glomerular disease), and pain (polycystic kidney disease). This article outlines how patient-reported outcomes are currently reported in trials, discusses core patient-reported outcomes that have been established for trials in kidney disease, and outlines strategies for implementing core patient-reported outcomes in trials.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Adolescents face challenges associated with unprecedented environmental, social and technological changes. The impacts of colonisation, intergenerational trauma, racism and socioeconomic disadvantage intensify these challenges for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adolescents. However, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adolescents also have cultural, spiritual, family and community capital that fosters their well-being.To date, little research has focused on understanding and appropriately measuring the well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adolescents, a pivotal factor in informing and guiding programmes and interventions that support them. This study will identify the domains of well-being and develop a new preference-based well-being measure based on the values and preferences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth (aged 12-17 years). METHODS AND ANALYSIS This project will be conducted across three research phases: (1) qualitative exploration of well-being using PhotoYarning and yarns with adult mentors to develop candidate items; (2) Think Aloud study, quantitative survey, psychometric analysis, validity testing of candidate items and finalisation of the descriptive system; and (3) scoring development using a quantitative preference-based approach. A multinomial (conditional) logit framework will be used to analyse responses and generate a scoring algorithm for the new preference-based well-being measure. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Ethics approvals have been obtained from: the Human Research Ethics Committees for each state and territory where data are being collected, the institutions where the research is being conducted and from the relevant Departments of Education. The new well-being measure will have wide applicability and can be used in assessing the effectiveness of programmes and services. This new national measure will ensure benefit and positive impact through the ability to identify and measure the aspects of well-being important to and valued by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth. Results will be published in international peer-reviewed journals and presented at conferences, and summaries will be provided to the study partner organisations and other relevant organisations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to analyse the narrative life stories of children with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) and their families to determine how health professionals can effectively support these children to achieve better life outcomes. DESIGN Qualitative narrative biographic study. SETTING We invited every long-term survivor of paediatric kidney transplants and their families at the Medical University of Vienna between 2008 and 2013 to participate in this study. PARTICIPANTS Nineteen patients (women: n=8, 42%) and 34 family members (women: n=22, 65%) were interviewed. The patients had a mean age of 7.6 (SD±5.6) years at the time of transplantation and 22.2 (SD±5.4) at the time of interview. MAIN OUTCOMES MEASURES A qualitative narrative biographical analysis was combined with computational structured topic models using the Latent Dirichlet Allocation. RESULTS The overarching finding was the desire for normality in daily life in long-term survivors and their families but with different perceptions of what normality looks like and predominance of this aspect evolving. Different strategies were used by patients (focused on their advancement) and caregivers (normality for all family members). Siblings played a major role in supporting survivors' social inclusion. CONCLUSIONS The strong desire for normality confirms recent findings of the Standardised Outcomes in Nephrology Group initiative, which proposes survival and life participation as core outcomes in children with chronic kidney disease. Our study should be a starting point for an international effort to identify typologies and stratified interventions for children with ESKD and their families, particularly siblings.

Abstract
As health care practices have evolved from a disease-oriented to patient-focused paradigm, patient and family engagement (PFE) has been recognized as an important aspect of health care delivery and outcomes. While pediatricians have long approached care delivery with a family-centered lens, PFE may be a less familiar concept to situate among related concepts such as shared decision-making, self-efficacy, patient activation, and family-centered care. Children with CKD and their families indicate a need and desire for enhanced PFE efforts in pediatric nephrology. Improving PFE offers the opportunity to provide our patients and families with skills that will positively impact their health and wellness throughout their lives. In this review, we define PFE, describe the components of and levels at which PFE occurs across the health care system, examine PFE interventions of promise, and finally suggest future directions to support PFE in pediatric nephrology.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Patient participation is essential for Core Outcome Set (COS) development studies. Patient education during participation may help patients better express their views in COS studies. This study aimed to investigate the current status of patient participation and the specified educational information in COS studies. METHODS We conducted a systematic review of COS development studies. Information on patient participation in COS research, and especially details of patient education, was analyzed. RESULTS In total, 146 COS development studies were included in this review. Of these, 125 studies (85.6%) mentioned patient participation. Most studies did not provide explicit information on patient participation. Some studies mentioned recruiting patients, but ultimately, none of them responded. Six studies reported conducting patient education through workshops, creating patient forums, or providing videos and slides. However, these studies did not provide details on education. Twenty-three studies used the plain language to explain patient outcomes. CONCLUSION COS developers are increasingly focusing on patient participation. However, only a few COS studies have explicitly reported conducting measures related to patient education. Further patient education is necessary when they participate in the development of a new Core Outcome Set. PRACTICE IMPLICATION This article provides implementation strategies related to patient education for future COS development studies.

Abstract
Rationale & Objective PRESERVE seeks to provide new knowledge to inform shared decision-making regarding blood pressure (BP) management for pediatric chronic kidney disease (CKD). PRESERVE will compare the effectiveness of alternative strategies for monitoring and treating hypertension on preserving kidney function; expand the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network (PCORnet) common data model by adding pediatric- and kidney-specific variables and linking electronic health record data to other kidney disease databases; and assess the lived experiences of patients related to BP management. Study Design Multicenter retrospective cohort study (clinical outcomes) and cross-sectional study (patient-reported outcomes [PROs]). Setting & Participants PRESERVE will include approximately 20,000 children between January 2009-December 2022 with mild-moderate CKD from 15 health care institutions that participate in 6 PCORnet Clinical Research Networks (PEDSnet, STAR, GPC, PaTH, CAPRiCORN, and OneFlorida+). The inclusion criteria were ≥1 nephrologist visit and ≥2 estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) values in the range of 30 to <90 mL/min/1.73 m2 separated by ≥90 days without an intervening value ≥90 mL/min/1.73 m2 and no prior dialysis or kidney transplant. Exposures BP measurements (clinic-based and 24-hour ambulatory BP); urine protein; and antihypertensive treatment by therapeutic class. Outcomes The primary outcome is a composite event of a 50% reduction in eGFR, eGFR of <15 mL/min/1.73 m2, long-term dialysis or kidney transplant. Secondary outcomes include change in eGFR, adverse events, and PROs. Analytical Approach Longitudinal models for dichotomous (proportional hazards or accelerated failure time) and continuous (generalized linear mixed models) clinical outcomes; multivariable linear regression for PROs. We will evaluate heterogeneity of treatment effect by CKD etiology and degree of proteinuria and will examine variation in hypertension management and outcomes based on socio-demographics. Limitations Causal inference limited by observational analyses. Conclusions PRESERVE will leverage the PCORnet infrastructure to conduct large-scale observational studies that address BP management knowledge gaps for pediatric CKD, focusing on outcomes that are meaningful to patients. Plain-Language Summary Hypertension is a major modifiable contributor to loss of kidney function in chronic kidney disease (CKD). The purpose of PRESERVE is to provide evidence to inform shared decision-making regarding blood pressure management for children with CKD. PRESERVE is a consortium of 16 health care institutions in PCORnet, the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network, and includes electronic health record data for >19,000 children with CKD. PRESERVE will (1) expand the PCORnet infrastructure for research in pediatric CKD by adding kidney-specific variables and linking electronic health record data to other kidney disease databases; (2) compare the effectiveness of alternative strategies for monitoring and treating hypertension on preserving kidney function; and (3) assess the lived experiences of patients and caregivers related to blood pressure management.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Paediatric kidney disease results in considerable burden on children and their families. Paediatric palliative care is a holistic, family-centred care approach intended to enable flourishing and address the many impediments to life participation which advanced kidney disease can impose. To date, palliative care resources have been underutilized in paediatric nephrology. This review will highlight recent literature targeting the engagement and life participation of children with advanced kidney disease through implementation of novel palliative care approaches and propose directions for future research. RECENT FINDINGS Children with advanced kidney disease and their families highly value incorporation of their perspectives, particularly on life participation, within care plan development; but what it means to participate in life can be variable, and clinicians need improved tools to ascertain and incorporate these perspectives. Novel palliative care interventions developed for application in comparable disease states offer potential opportunities for paediatric nephrologists to support this goal. SUMMARY Children with advanced kidney disease and their families will benefit from incorporation of their perspectives and values, facilitated by palliative interventions.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Developing core outcome sets is essential to ensure that results of clinical trials are comparable and useful. A number of core outcome sets in pediatrics have been published, but a comprehensive in-depth understanding of core outcome sets in this field is lacking. OBJECTIVE To systematically identify core outcome sets in child health, collate the diseases to which core outcome sets have been applied, describe the methods used for development and stakeholder participation, and evaluate the methodological quality of existing core outcome sets. EVIDENCE REVIEW MEDLINE, SCOPUS, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL were searched using relevant search terms, such as clinical trials, core outcome, and children, along with relevant websites, such as Core Outcome Measures in Effectiveness Trials (COMET). Four researchers worked in teams of 2, performed literature screening and data extraction, and evaluated the methodological quality of core outcome sets using the Core Outcome Set-Standards for Development (COS-STAD). FINDINGS A total of 77 pediatric core outcome sets were identified, mainly developed by organizations or researchers in Europe, North America, and Australia and mostly from the UK (22 [29%]) and the US (22 [29%]). A total of 77 conditions were addressed; the most frequent International Classification of Diseases, 11th Revision category was diseases of the digestive system (14 [18%]). Most of the outcomes in pediatric core outcome sets were unordered (34 [44%]) or presented in custom classifications (29 [38%]). Core outcome sets used 1 or more of 8 development methods; the most frequent combination of methods was systematic review/literature review/scoping review, together with the Delphi approach and consensus for decision-making (10 [14%]). Among the 6 main types of stakeholders, clinical experts were the most frequently involved (74 [100%]), while industry representatives were rarely involved (4 [5%]). Only 6 core outcome sets (8%) met the 12 criteria of COS-STAD. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Future quality of pediatric core outcome sets should be improved based on the standards proposed by the COMET initiative, while core outcome sets methodology and reporting standards should be extended to pediatric populations to help improve the quality of core outcome sets in child health. In addition, the COMET outcome taxonomy should also add items applicable to children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Best-worst scaling is a theory-driven method that can be used to prioritize objects in health. We sought to characterize all studies of best-worst scaling to prioritize objects in health, to assess trends of using best-worst scaling in prioritization over time, and to assess the relationship between a legacy measure of quality (PREFS) and a novel assessment of subjective quality and policy relevance. METHODS A systematic review identified studies published through to the end of 2021 that applied best-worst scaling to study priorities in health (PROSPERO CRD42020209745), updating a prior review published in 2016. The PubMed, EBSCOhost, Embase, Scopus, APA PsychInfo, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases were used and were supplemented by a hand search. Data describing the application, development, design, administration/analysis, quality, and policy relevance were summarized and we tested for trends by comparing articles before and after 1 January, 2017. Multivariate statistics were then used to assess the relationships between PREFS, subjective quality, policy relevance, and other possible indicators. RESULTS From a total of 2826 unique papers identified, 165 best-worst scaling studies were included in this review. Applications of best-worst scaling to study priorities in health have continued to grow (p < 0.01) and are now used in all regions of the world, most often to study the priorities of patients/consumers (67%). Several key trends can be observed over time: increased use of pretesting (p < 0.05); increased use of online administration (p < 0.01), and decreased use of paper self-administered surveys (p = 0.02); increased use of heterogeneity analysis (p = 0.02); an increase in having a clearly stated purpose (p < 0.01); and a decrease in comparing respondents to non-respondents (p = 0.01). The average sample size has more than doubled, from 228 to 472 respondents, but formal sample size justifications remain low (5.3%) and unchanged over time (p = 0.68). While the average PREFS score remained unchanged at 3.1/5, both subjective quality and policy relevance trended up, but changes were not statistically significant (p = 0.06 and p = 0.13). Most of the variation in subjective quality was driven by PREFS (R2 = 0.42), but it was also positively assosciated with policy relevance, heterogeneity analysis, and using a balanced incomplete block design, and was negatively associated with not using developmental methods and an increasing sample size. CONCLUSIONS Using best-worst scaling to prioritize objects is now commonly used around the world to assess the priorities of patients and other stakeholders in health. Best practices are clearly emerging for best-worst scaling. Although legacy measures (PREFS) to measure study quality are reasonable, there may need to be new tools to assess both study quality and policy relevance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Globally, over 1.2 million people die from chronic kidney disease (CKD) every year. Patients with CKD are up to 10 times more likely to die prematurely than progress to kidney failure requiring kidney replacement therapy. The burden of symptoms and impaired quality of life in CKD may be compounded by comorbidities and treatment side effects. However, patient-important outcomes remain inconsistently and infrequently reported in trials in patients with CKD, which can limit evidence-informed decision-making. The Standardised Outcomes in Nephrology - Chronic Kidney Disease (SONG-CKD) aims to establish a consensus-based core outcome set for trials in patients with CKD not yet requiring kidney replacement therapy to ensure outcomes of relevance to patients, caregivers and health professionals are consistently reported in trials. METHODS SONG-CKD involves four phases: a systematic review to identify outcomes (domains and measures) that have been reported in randomised controlled trials involving adults with CKD who do not require kidney replacement therapy; stakeholder key informant interviews with health professionals involved in the care of adults with CKD to ascertain their views on establishing core outcomes in CKD; an international two-round online Delphi survey with patients, caregivers, clinicians, researchers, policy makers and industry representatives to obtain consensus on critically important outcome domains; and stakeholder consensus workshops to review and finalise the set of core outcome domains for trials in CKD. DISCUSSION Establishing a core outcome set to be reported in trials in patients with CKD will enhance the relevance, transparency and impact of research to improve the lives of people with CKD. Risk factors for postoperative recurrence of anal fistula identified by an international, evidence-based Delphi consultation survey of surgical specialists. Int J Surg 2021; 92:106038. Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the emerging knowledge about postoperative anal fistula recurrence (AFR) and the increasing number of clinical studies, there is no better understanding or consensus regarding the risk factors for AFR. The aim of this study was to generate international consensus guidance statements focusing on AFR. METHODS A two-round modified Delphi process was conducted among international surgical specialists via an online survey delivered by email with a secure link created with Google Forms. Surgeons were asked to use a 9-point Likert scale to rate the importance of patient-, fistula-, and surgery-related statements developed based on our previous systematic review. Consensus was reached when at least 70% of panel members rated a statement as being of critical importance (ratings of 7-9). RESULTS Of a total of 60 experts invited, 38 experts representing 13 countries from four continents agreed to participate in the first round of the Delphi process and 31 in the second round. In total, consensus was reached on 14 statements on the risk factors for AFR in three domains: patient-related risk factors included comorbid colitis, inflammatory bowel disease and use of immunosuppressants; fistula-related factors included transsphincteric fistula, number of fistula, horseshoe extension, undetected internal opening, location of anal fistula, recurrent fistula, suprasphincteric fistula, and height of the internal opening; and surgery-related factors included type of surgery, previous fistula surgery and surgeon. CONCLUSION This Delphi study provides an evidence-based profile of risk factors for AFR in the patient-, surgery- and fistula-related domains from a global perspective. Clinically, these indicators can be incorporated to develop risk calculation tools for the early detection of AFR in high-risk patients, allowing early prevention and intervention.

AbstractDespite continued advances in medical treatment, pediatric CKD remains an unremitting, burdensome condition characterized by decreased quality of life and earlier death. These burdens underscore the need for integration of pediatric palliative care (PPC) into nephrology practice. PPC is an evolving field that strives to (1) relieve physical, psychologic, social, practical, and existential suffering; (2) improve quality of life; (3) facilitate decision making; and (4) assist with care coordination in children with life-threatening or life-shortening conditions. Integration of palliative care into routine care has already begun for adults with kidney disease and children with other chronic diseases; however, similar integration has not occurred in pediatric nephrology. This review serves to provide a comprehensive definition of PPC, highlight the unmet need in pediatric nephrology and current integration efforts, discuss the state of palliative care in adult nephrology and analogous chronic pediatric disease states, and introduce future opportunities for study.

Abstract
Outcomes relevant to treatment decision-making are inconsistently reported in trials involving glomerular disease. Here, we sought to establish a consensus-derived set of critically important outcomes designed to be reported in all future trials by using an online, international two-round Delphi survey in English. To develop this, patients with glomerular disease, caregivers and health professionals aged 18 years and older rated the importance of outcomes using a Likert scale and a Best-Worst scale. The absolute and relative importance was assessed and comments were analyzed thematically. Of 1198 participants who completed Round 1, 734 were patients/caregivers while 464 were health care professionals from 59 countries. Of 700 participants that completed Round 2, 412 were patients/caregivers and 288 were health care professionals. Need for dialysis or transplant, kidney function, death, cardiovascular disease, remission-relapse and life participation were the most important outcomes to patients/caregivers and health professionals. Patients/caregivers rated patient-reported outcomes higher while health care professionals rated hospitalization, death and remission/relapse higher. Four themes explained the reasons for their priorities: confronting death and compounded suffering, focusing on specific targets in glomerular disease, preserving meaning in life, and fostering self-management. Thus, consistent reporting of these critically important outcomes in all trials involving glomerular disease is hoped to improve patient-centered decision-making.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) is a rare severe hepatorenal disease. Survivors of pulmonary hypoplasia and patients with milder presentations often achieve long-term survival but frequently require kidney and/or liver transplantation. OBJECTIVE To examine the use of clinical, surrogate and patient-centered outcomes in studies on ARPKD with special attention to core outcomes of the Standardized Outcomes in NephroloGy project for children with chronic kidney disease (SONG-Kids). DATA SOURCES AND STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA A systematic MEDLINE literature search identified 367 ARPKD studies published since 1990; however, of these 134 were excluded because they did not report any clinical outcomes (e.g. only histopathological, genetic, protein structure or radiological markers), 19 studies because they only included prenatal patients and 138 because they were case reports with ≤ 3 patients. STUDY APPRAISAL Seventy-six eligible studies were examined for study type, size, intervention, and reported outcomes by organ system and type, including all SONG-kids tier 1-3 outcomes. PARTICIPANTS There were 3231 patient-reports of children and adults with ARPKD. RESULTS The overwhelming majority of studies reported clinical and surrogate outcomes (75/76 (98%) and 73/76 (96%)), but only 11/76 (14%) examined patient-centered outcomes and only 2/76 (3%) used validated instruments to capture them. Of the SONG-Kids core outcomes, kidney function was reported almost universally (70/76 (92%), infection and survival in three quarters (57/76 (75%), 55/76 (72%)) and measures of life participation (including neurological impairment) only rarely and inconsistently (16/76 (21%)). LIMITATIONS Thirty studies (39%) were of low quality as they were either narrative case reports (n = 14, 18%) and/or patients with ARPKD were an indistinguishable subgroup (n = 18, 24%). Only 28 trials compared interventions, but none were randomized. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Studies that reported clinical outcomes in ARPKD usually covered the core outcome domains of kidney function, infections, and survival, but measures of life participation and patient-centered outcomes are distinctly lacking and require more attention in future trials. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the perspectives on life participation by young adults with childhood-onset chronic kidney disease (CKD). DESIGN Semi-structured interviews; thematic analysis. SETTING Multiple centres across six countries (Australia, Canada, India, UK, USA and New Zealand). PARTICIPANTS Thirty young adults aged 18 to 35 years diagnosed with CKD during childhood. RESULTS We identified six themes: struggling with daily restrictions (debilitating symptoms and side effects, giving up valued activities, impossible to attend school and work, trapped in a medicalised life, overprotected by adults and cautious to avoid health risks); lagging and falling behind (delayed independence, failing to keep up with peers and socially inept); defeated and hopeless (incapacitated by worry, an uncertain and bleak future, unworthy of relationships and low self-esteem and shame); reorienting plans and goals (focussing on the day-to-day, planning parenthood and forward and flexible planning); immersing oneself in normal activities (refusing to miss out, finding enjoyment, determined to do what peers do and being present at social events); and striving to reach potential and seizing opportunities (encouragement from others, motivated by the illness, establishing new career goals and grateful for opportunities). CONCLUSIONS Young adults encounter lifestyle limitations and missed school and social opportunities as a consequence of developing CKD during childhood and as a consequence lack confidence and social skills, are uncertain of the future, and feel vulnerable. Some re-adjust their goals and become more determined to participate in 'normal' activities to avoid missing out. Strategies are needed to improve life participation in young adult 'graduates' of childhood CKD and thereby strengthen their mental and social well-being and enhance their overall health.
