Abstract
Background: Retinoblastoma (RB) is a malignant intraocular tumor diagnosed in early childhood that requires extensive medical and surgical treatment at a young age. Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is thought to be diminished due to visual impairment, facial deformities, and fear of recurrence or secondary cancer. However, few studies have identified variables associated with HRQOL among those with RB. Purpose: To compare HRQOL of adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with RB to matched controls and to identify predictors of HRQOL in RB survivors. Methods: Using a cross-sectional design, 198 AYAs (101 RBs and 97 controls) completed HRQOL (PROMIS®-29 profile) and psychosocial questionnaires (Rosenberg self-esteem scale, multidimensional scale of perceived social support, and Hollingshead index for socioeconomic status). Clinical variables (age at diagnosis, visual acuity, laterality, heredity, treatment regime, and anesthesia exposure) were extracted from the medical record. Correlates of HRQOL were estimated using linear regression models. Results: RB survivors reported similar HRQOL compared to controls. Physical function (p < .001), social support (p = .013), and self-esteem (p = .028) were lower in the RB group compared to controls. Visual acuity and self-esteem accounted for 52% of the variance in PROMIS physical health summary scores and self-esteem accounted for 38% of the variance in mental health summary scores. Conclusion: Despite deficits in physical function and self-esteem HRQOL in RB survivors was comparable to healthy counterparts. However, the majority of RB survivors in this study had normal visual acuity. Clinicians should explore ways to enhance self-esteem in RB survivors.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: retinoblastoma (RB) is a rare inherited eye disease. Leukocoria is the first presenting sign of this disease. Early diagnosis is important to gain better life outcomes. We aim to assess Kafr Elsheikh university medical students' knowledge about retinoblastoma.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study was performed using a web-based questionnaire to collect data. We analyzed the data using the SPSS program.
Results: we survived 235 medical students and graduates at Kafr Elsheikh university. Most participants (n=131, 55.7%) had sufficient knowledge about retinoblastoma, while 78 (33.2%) had poor knowledge. Only 26 (11.1%) had a proficient level. Almost all participants (99.6%) detected that the abnormal eye was due to disease. Nearly two-thirds (63%) thought that it was a life-threatening leukocoria. While (96.6%) knew that an ophthalmologist referral was the right thing to do. We found no significant differences between academic grades and test results (H= 1.093, P=.779). As well, no correlation was found between academic grades and results (r=.033, p=.086).
Conclusion: Retinoblastoma is a fatal disease that needs attention in developing countries. Early detection of RB is the key to successful management with a higher survival rate. All healthcare providers, particularly those who have direct contact with children, should receive comprehensive education to improve their clinical screening skills.

Abstract
Inherited cancer syndromes are caused by genetic mutations that place patients at an increased risk for developing cancer. Although most cancers are not caused by genetic inheritance, clinicians must understand these syndromes and be able to recognize their common characteristics. A thorough family history and identification of common patterns as well as specific clinical signs and symptoms can help with early recognition. This article describes symptoms of the more common cancer syndromes, including hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, Li-Fraumeni, Lynch, familial adenomatous polyposis, retinoblastoma, multiple endocrine neoplasia, and von Hippel-Lindau. Important patient education regarding genetic testing also is covered.

Abstract
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is known to be a powerful vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-regulating hormone. It stimulates vascularization of the gravid uterus by upregulating VEGF expression. In the body, hCG activates the same receptor as luteinizing hormone (LH). Like hCG, LH is also strongly proangiogenic. Recently, it has been shown that LH/hCG receptors are present in the retina and that both LH and hCG are found in the eye. In fact, the human eye can synthesize its own hCG. We have previously shown that LH and VEGF are significantly correlated in mammalian eyes, potentially implicating LH-receptor/hCG-receptor activation in intraocular VEGF regulation. Given that elevated VEGF is associated with progression of two vasoproliferative pediatric retinal disorders, retinopathy of prematurity and retinoblastoma, our objective was to determine whether hCG may potentially affect VEGF production and pathologic retinal vascularization in vasoproliferative disorders affecting the immature retina. In this study, we used (a) oxygen-induced retinopathy mouse model (standard model for retinopathy of prematurity) and (b) Y79 retinoblastoma cells (a human cell line derived from immature retinal cells). In the oxygen-induced retinopathy model, number of preretinal nuclei (representing pathologic retinal neovascularization) significantly increases by 57% (P<0.05) in hCG-treated mice. In Y79 cells, VEGF production significantly increases by 37% (P<0.05) in hCG-treated cells. These findings suggest that hCG is potentially able to influence retinal vascularization and VEGF production and thus, the hCG receptor may potentially represent a therapeutic target for vasoproliferative retinal disorders affecting the young eye.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES It is known that extremely low frequency-pulsed electromagnetic fields (ELF-PEMF) influence multiple cellular and molecular processes. Retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells have a significant part in the emergence and pathophysiology of several ocular disorders, such as neovascularization. This study assessed the impact of ELF-PEMF on the proangiogenic features of RPE cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS Primary cultured RPE cells were treated with ELF-PEMF (50 Hz) for three days. Using ELISA assay, we evaluated the effects of treatment on RPE cell proliferation and apoptosis. Also, RT-PCR was used to determine the gene expression of proangiogenic factors, such as matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), MMP-9, vascular endothelial growth factors receptor 2 (VEGFR-2), hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1α), VEGFA, cathepsin D, connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), E2F3, tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases 1 (TIMP-1), and TIMP-2. RESULTS No noticeable changes were observed in cell proliferation and cell death of ELF-PEMF-exposed RPE cells, while transcript levels of proangiogenic genes (HIF-1α, VEGFA, VEGFR-2, CTGF, cathepsin D, TIMP-1, E2F3, MMP-2, and MMP-9) increased significantly. CONCLUSION RPE cells are important for homeostasis of the retina. ELF-PEMF increased the gene expression of proangiogenic factors in RPE cells, which highlights concerns about the impact of this treatment on human health.
