Abstract
OBJECTIVE The importance of health literacy in medical imaging is well recognized, yet the current landscape remains inadequately understood. This study aims to explore the extent of health literacy studies contextualized to medical imaging. STUDY DESIGN Scoping review. METHODS A scoping review was conducted using three online bibliographic databases namely, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and CINAHL. We have adopted the concept of health literacy, as a clinical risk and personal asset, to guide this review. RESULTS Of 311 unique articles, 39 met our selection criteria. Five themes (categories) were identified by the authors: appropriate communication with patients who receive medical imaging test results, appropriate usage of medical imaging, classes and characteristics of eHealth literacy, disease/deterioration prevention, and patient education. Additionally, 17 health literacy assessment tools were identified, including 11 original creations. Finally, 11 recommendations have emerged from this scoping review, offering valuable insights into methods, considerations, and strategies for promoting health literacy. CONCLUSIONS Health literacy studies in medical imaging cover both clinical and public health perspectives, benefiting diverse populations, regardless of underlying medical conditions. Notably, the majority of assessment tools used in these studies were author-generated, hindering cross-study comparisons. Given the innate capacity of medical images to convey intuitive information, those images do not solely benefit the patients who are given medical imaging examinations, but they also hold significant potential to enhance public health literacy. Health literacy and medical imaging are closely associated and mutually reinforce each other.

Abstract
PURPOSE Radiotherapy patients often face undue anxiety due to misconceptions about radiation and their inability to visualize their upcoming treatments. Access to their personal treatment plans is one way in which pre-treatment anxiety may be reduced. But radiotherapy data are quite complex, requiring specialized software for display and necessitating personalized explanations for patients to understand them. Therefore, our goal was to design and implement a novel radiotherapy menu in a patient portal to improve patient access to and understanding of their radiotherapy treatment plans. METHODS A prototype radiotherapy menu was developed in our institution's patient portal following a participatory stakeholder co-design methodology. Customizable page templates were designed to render key radiotherapy data in the portal's patient-facing mobile phone app. DICOM-RT data were used to provide patients with relevant treatment parameters and generate pre-treatment 3D visualizations of planned treatment beams, while the mCODE data standard was used to provide post-treatment summaries of the delivered treatments. A focus group was conducted to gather initial patient feedback on the menu. RESULTS Pre-treatment: the radiotherapy menu provides patients with a personalized treatment plan overview, including a personalized explanation of their treatment, along with an interactive 3D rendering of their body, and treatment beams for visualization. Post-treatment: a summary of the delivered radiotherapy is provided, allowing patients to retain a concise personal record of their treatment that can easily be shared with future healthcare providers. Focus group feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Patients highlighted how the intuitive presentation of their complex radiotherapy data would better prepare them for their radiation treatments. CONCLUSIONS We successfully designed and implemented a prototype radiotherapy menu in our institution's patient portal that improves patient access to and understanding of their radiotherapy data. We used the mCODE data standard to generate post-treatment summaries in a way that is easily shareable and interoperable.

Abstract
Background Patient education (PE) is essential for improving patients' knowledge, anxiety, and satisfaction, and supporting their postoperative recovery. However, the advantages of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS)-smaller incisions and faster recovery-can result in shorter hospital stays, making PE more challenging to implement effectively. Multimedia PE can potentially enhance PE, but its effectiveness for patients undergoing VATS is unclear. Objective This study developed a scenario-based PE web app for lung tumor patients undergoing VATS (SPE-VATS) to facilitate the PE process and evaluated its usability through a clinical trial. Methods The SPE-VATS provided the experimental group (EG: 32 participants) with interactive scenario, query guidance, diagnostic analysis, experience sharing, and active reminder, while the control group (CG: 32 participants) used pamphlets and videos. The usability of SPE-VATS in terms of postoperative anxiety reduction and patient satisfaction with the app was evaluated using self-reported questionnaires based on the state-trait anxiety inventory, technology acceptance model, system usability scale, and task load index. Results There was no statistically significant difference in postoperative anxiety reduction between the EG and CG, possibly because 90% of the participants underwent a low-risk surgical type, and VATS is known to be advantageous in alleviating surgical anxiety. However, females and higher educated EG participants showed a non-significant but favorable reduction than their CG counterparts. Moreover, the EG was highly satisfied with the app (rated 4.2 to 4.4 out of 5.0), with no significant gender and education level difference. They particularly valued the interactive scenario, experience sharing, and diagnostic analysis features of SPE-VATS. Conclusions The SPE-VATS demonstrated its usability and high patient satisfaction, particularly for female and higher educated patients. Low-risk patient predominance and VATS's advantages may explain non-significant postoperative anxiety reduction, warranting further studies on high-risk patients to evaluate the impact of SPE-VATS on clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ninety percent of patients receiving radiation therapy experience side effects. Busy schedules and intensive health education programs may lead to incomplete education content delivery and inaccurate patient self-care implementation. This study investigated whether multimedia health education improves the accuracy of patient self-care implementation compared with paper-based education. METHODS From March 11, 2020 to February 28, 2021, 110 patients were randomly divided into experimental and control groups, each comprising 55 participants. Paper-based materials were used along with multimedia materials. Radiology self-care awareness questionnaires were administered to both groups before the first treatment and on day 10. The differences in radiology self-care awareness between the two groups was analyzed with inferential statistics, independent t tests, categorical data, and Pearson's chi-squared test. Differences between the two groups were considered significant at a p value of < 0.05. RESULTS The treatment accuracy rate improved from 10.9 to 79.1% in the control group and from 24.8 to 98.5% in the experimental group, indicating an improvement in both groups. The difference was significant. These results indicate that the intervention could improve the effectiveness of self-care. CONCLUSIONS Participants who used pretreatment multimedia health education exhibited a higher rate of having a correct understanding of treatment self-care than did the control group. These findings can inform the development of a patient-centered cancer treatment knowledge base for improved quality of care.
