Treatment of mandibular malignant fibrous histiocytoma during pregnancy

Maternal and Fetal Outcomes in Pregnancies affected by Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors

Objective  This study was aimed to describe perinatal outcome of a cohort of pregnant patients with bone and soft tissue tumors and to compare the current series with our group's previously reported experience. Methods  Pregnant women diagnosed before and during pregnancy were identified, retrospectively, for the years 2004 to 2014. Relevant maternal and neonatal data were collected. Results  Forty-eight patients were identified. Ten cases were diagnosed during pregnancy. Pelvis, abdomen, and extremities were the most common tumor locations. Osteosarcoma, liposarcoma, and Ewing's sarcoma were the most common histological types and comprise more than 50% of the cases. Metastases occurred in nine cases. Most of the cases (60%) were treated surgically during pregnancy and delivery occurred at term. Chemotherapy was delayed until after delivery. There were no perinatal or infant deaths. Patients presented with advanced maternal disease in 18% in previous report (1983-2003) versus 40% in present report (2004-2014). Metastases were present in 40% and maternal death rate was approximately 20% in both cohorts. Conclusion  Pregnant women with bone and soft tissue tumors are candidates for standard surgical management during pregnancy. Other treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy must be evaluated for each woman on a case-by-case basis. Iatrogenic prematurity was common in our findings.

Benign Fibrous Histiocytoma: A Rare Case Report and Literature Review

Fibrous histiocytoma is a benign soft tissue tumour that may present as a fibrous mass anywhere in the human body. The involvement of the oral cavity is extremely rare and very few cases have been reported in literature till date. We here report a case of benign fibrous histiocytoma localized in the oral cavity. The clinical and histological features of the lesion are discussed precisely in the light of a literature review of this pathology in oral cavity.

A rare case of fibrous histiocytic tumor of the tongue

Fibrous histiocytoma is a benign soft tissue tumor composed of a mixture of fibroblastic and histiocytic cells arising as a fibrous mass everywhere in the human body. Based on location it is divided into cutaneous type and those involving the deeper tissues. Involvement of the oral cavity is rare. It is important to distinguish this tumor from the more aggressive forms of fibrohistiocytic neoplasm including dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans and malignant fibrous histiocytoma (FH) (7).The clinical and histiological diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of FH have been discussed.

Oral benign fibrous histiocytoma: two case reports

We report two cases of benign fibrous histiocytoma that localized in the oral cavity. The clinical and histological features of the lesion are reported. Finally, a literature revision of this pathology at the level of the oral cavity is reported.

A rare case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the gingiva

BACKGROUND

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is an aggressive, high-grade tumor with poor prognosis. It is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in adults, usually occurring retroperitoneally in extremities. MFH of the head and neck is rare. Cases with primary involvement of only the oral soft tissues have been reported; a few occurred in the gingiva. Its clinical features include a painless enlarging mass, which may or may not be ulcerated.

METHODS

A 20-year-old female patient presented with a non-healing necrotic ulceration of 4 months' duration on the maxillary anterior labial gingiva. Based on her history and agricultural background, a provisional diagnosis of chronic fungal and chronic bacterial infection was given. The patient was placed on a topical antifungal in combination with antibiotic therapy for 10 days. Because the lesion failed to respond to the initial therapy, an incisional biopsy was performed. The lesion was diagnosed as MFH based on clinical, histopathologic, and immunohistochemical findings.

RESULTS

The patient was referred to the Department of Oncology and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Manipal, for further evaluation and treatment; the lesion was treated by resection of the premaxilla, and a splint was placed. She was followed up for 3 months with improvement in her condition.

CONCLUSIONS

Because MFH is rare in the oral cavity, misdiagnosis may not be unusual based on the initial clinical examination. Any suspicious lesion that is unresponsive to treatment must be subjected to histopathologic evaluation to arrive at a final diagnosis.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the mandible

We report a case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) primary within the mandible of a 32-year-old female. The mandible is a rare location of MFH, accounting for only 3% of all tumours of this type occurring within bone. The clinical, pathological and radiographic features are discussed with special emphasis on the radiographic features of this lesion.
