Shaping the interprofessional agenda: a study examining qualified nurses' perceptions of learning with others

Becoming an interprofessional practitioner: factors promoting the application of pre-qualification learning to professional practice in maternity care

Teamwork and collaboration have been recognized as essential competencies for health care providers in the field of maternity care. Health care policy and regulatory bodies have stressed the importance of Interprofessional Education (IPE) for learners in this field; however, there is little evidence of sustained application of pre-qualifying IPE to the realm of interprofessional collaboration (IPC) in practice following qualification. The aim of this research was to understand how newly qualified midwives applied their IPE training to professional practice. A purposive sample of midwifery students, educators, new midwives and Heads of Midwifery from four universities in the United Kingdom participated in semi-structured interviews, questionnaires and focus groups. Qualitative, grounded theory methodology was used to develop the emerging theory. Newly qualified midwives appeared better able to integrate their IPE training into practice when IPE occurred in a favourable learning environment that facilitated acquisition and application of IPE skills and that recognized the importance of shared partnership between the university and the clinical workplace.

Promoting partnership working for undergraduate students

Interprofessional working is an important NHS policy aim (Department of Health 2000; Barrett et al 2005), which has meant that interprofessional education (IPE) is an increasingly important topic for higher education institutions (Caldwell and Atwal, 2003; Barr and Ross, 2006). The argument for IPE is based on the assumption that it will enhance interprofessional working and assist in ameliorating many of the challenges of contemporary health-care. However, there is a dearth of evidence of the effectiveness of IPE in the UK, particularly at undergraduate level. This does not necessarily mean that IPE is ineffective, but suggests the need to explore ways of introducing and evaluating IPE locally for undergraduate students. This article reports on an evaluation of a pilot IPE initiative for undergraduate students from different disciplines, in an attempt to consider how sustainable IPE could be introduced in one institution.

Developing inter-professional learning: tactics, teamwork and talk

Teamwork and collaboration between all health professionals results in high quality clinical care, and increased job satisfaction for staff. Encouraging inter-professional learning (IPL) may be advantageous in developing more effective teams. There is little rigorous research in this area, but many small uncontrolled studies do demonstrate positive results. IPL involves structured learning opportunities that enhance problem-solving abilities and conflict resolution. It should be clearly differentiated from shared teaching (or multidisciplinary/multiprofessional learning), where common content is taught to many professions without any intention to develop interaction. To counteract the sometimes negative attitudes in both students and staff, educators need to commence IPL early in the programme, base it in both theoretical and clinical placements and ensure that it is valued and assessed. Difficulties with timetabling and accommodation need to be solved prior to commencement. A facilitator should be employed, and a team of committed lecturers developed, with an emphasis on teamwork and the discouragement of individualism. Opportunities for student interaction and ways of improving group dynamics within non-threatening learning environments should to be sought, and instances of conflict embraced and resolved. Future IPL programmes should be rigorously evaluated and may demonstrate enhanced inter-professional relationships and improved quality of patient/client care.

Towards effective group-work in nurse education

This focus of this paper is on meaningful learning within the context of small group-work in nurse education; a pedagogical approach that is increasingly being used throughout higher education. The paper explores the question: when working with others what conditions and types of interaction are necessary to promote higher learning? Some suggestions are drawn from the literature and a position is articulated. Some implications of this position for curriculum leadership in planning an effective learning environment within higher education are discussed.

Challenges to HIV service provision: the commonalities for nurses and social workers

Interdisciplinary collaboration can be enhanced through an understanding of the challenges and needs associated with service provision. This study explores the experiences of 192 service providers, with additional comparisons of nurses and social workers. Service providers reported fear of contracting HIV, feeling helpless, problems getting up-to-date information, grief and inadequate referral resources. Except for many more nurses expressing worry about contracting HIV, nurses and social workers shared many of the same problems. In addition, both groups were concerned with the comprehensive health needs of people living with HIV/AIDS. Moreover, they demonstrated shared professional values such as the importance of self-awareness and professional knowledge, positive and non-judgemental attitudes, and non-discriminatory treatment of client groups. This commonality makes nurses and social workers natural allies in responding to the many challenges associated with HIV service provision. Study findings support collaboration in the areas of service delivery, policy development, advocacy and professional development.

Student nurse satisfaction levels with their courses: part I -- effects of demographic variables

Recent years have seen an increased emphasis on the monitoring of the quality of learning and teaching in higher education. This has led to more attention being paid to evaluating student perceptions of their learning experiences. This article (Part I of two on the subject) examines the factors that influence student satisfaction with their modular courses. Seven factors categorized into two sets are scrutinized: Part I investigates the effects of four demographic variables, while Part II explores the effects of three academic (educational)-related variables. In this report, the study research design, tool and sample are described, and an analysis of the demographic variables of gender, disability, ethnicity and age-bracket is undertaken, whereby their effects on performance and satisfaction levels of students are considered. Employing a questionnaire, data from 460 students attending various multidisciplinary health care modules at the School of Health Care, Oxford Brookes University for the first term of the academic year 2000/2001 were analysed. The questionnaire was found to be reliable and there were no differences in satisfaction between students who provided their registration numbers and those who did not, suggesting that the results are generalizable to the greater student population of the School of Health Care. The study found no differences in performance or satisfaction levels according to gender, but disabled students indicated less satisfaction although the differences were not significant. Fewer students of 'non-white' ethnicity felt that their learning experience was intellectually stimulating, and that the information about their modules was satisfactory and readily available. Student age significantly predicted performance and 'mature' students performed better and showed higher satisfaction than 'traditional' students. The findings and their implications for nurse education and curriculum design are discussed, with support from a growing number of studies investigating student nurse satisfaction and quality issues of learning and teaching in higher education.
