Abstract
An iPrMgCl-deprotonating Weinreb amide-type Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons (HWE) reaction was developed, and the effects of diverse reaction conditions, including the base, cation, solvent, and concentration, were investigated to broaden the substrate scope and achieve high (E)-selectivity. The Weinreb amide-type phosphonoenolate generated from iPrMgCl was found to be isolable, stable for at least over a half year, and applicable in the HWE reaction keeping high productivity and selectivity compared with the in situ generated phosphonoenolate. The results prompted us to perform an application study including successive elongation, synthesis of a biscyclopropane, and Weinreb ketone syntheses.

Abstract
Here we report the asymmetric total syntheses of two rearranged tigliane diterpenoids, euphordraculoate A and pedrolide. A reductive dihydroxylation cascade and Nazarov cyclization were performed to generate euphordraculoate A, which was subjected to a cascade of Eu-promoted dienyl enolization, intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction and enol-ketone tautomerization to afford pedrolide, a pathway consistent with our proposal for the biogenesis of pedrolide.

Abstract
We describe the successful synthesis of the phormidolide A macrocycle as a crucial step toward its total synthesis and configurational assignment. Exhaustive exploration of macrocyclization strategies revealed the detrimental effects of a bulky protecting group on the C17 hydroxyl function, leading to the successful use of a C17 p-methoxybenzyloxymethyl (PMBM) ether in the macrolactonization reaction. Further elaboration of the macrocycle with a truncated C18-C23 side chain afforded an advanced C1-C23 fragment of phormidolide A. Detailed comparison of spectroscopic data with those of phormidolide A supports the proposed configurational reassignment.

Abstract
A detailed mechanistic study of the Z-selective allylic functionalization via thianthrenium salts is presented. Kinetic analyses, deuterium labeling experiments, and computational methods are used to rationalize the observed reactivity and selectivity. We find that the reaction proceeds via a rate-determining and stereodetermining allylic deprotonation of an alkenylthianthrenium species. The Z-configuration of the resultant allylic ylide is translated into the Z-allylic amine product through a sequence of subsequent fast and irreversible steps: protonation to form a Z-allylic thianthrenium electrophile and then regioselective substitution by the nucleophile. In the stereodetermining deprotonation step, computational studies identified a series of stabilizing nonbonding interactions in the Z-alkene-forming transition state that contribute to the stereoselectivity.

Abstract
A new scalable synthesis of (E)-α,β-unsaturated esters has been developed using protic, non-toxic, and biodegradable deep eutectic solvents through the Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reaction between triethyl phosphonates and (hetero)aromatic carbonyl compounds, encompassing electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups. Stereoselective preparation of disubstituted or trisubstituted ethyl cinnamate derivatives is achieved in the presence of LiOH, K2CO3, or DBU as bases, at room temperature and under air. Demonstrated with the synthesis of (E)-ethyl 3-(4-bromophenyl)acrylate, the same eutectic mixture (choline chloride/urea) proved to be reusable for three consecutive runs. Gram-scale reactions (10 mmol) can be carried out without the formation of side products, thereby ensuring high atom economy and an EcoScale score of 71.

Abstract
Alkenes are an important class of organic molecules found among synthetic intermediates and bioactive compounds. They are commonly synthesized through stoichiometric Wittig-type olefination of carbonyls and imines, using ylides or their equivalents. Despite the importance of Wittig-type olefination reactions, their catalytic variants remain underdeveloped. We explored the use of transition metal catalysis to form ylide equivalents from readily available starting materials. Our investigation led to a new copper-catalyzed olefination of imines with alkenyl boronate esters as coupling partners. We identified a heterobimetallic complex, obtained by hydrocupration of the alkenyl boronate esters, as the key catalytic intermediate that serves as an ylide equivalent. The high E-selectivity observed in the reaction is due to the stereoselective addition of this intermediate to an imine, followed by stereospecific anti-elimination.

Abstract
A convergent route for the asymmetric total synthesis of antibacterial macrolide sorangiolide A has been developed for the first time. The key feature of this synthesis includes Krische iridium-catalyzed anti-diastereoselective carbonyl crotylation, Crimmins acetate aldol, Yamaguchi esterification, Julia-Kocienski olefination, Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons olefination, and ring-closing metathesis. The origin of the low intensity of the 13C{1H} NMR signals of the C1 and C2 centers of the natural product has been investigated, disclosing possible forms of existence for the natural product in the solution phase.

Abstract
Organic molecules with fluoroalkylene scaffolds, especially a tetrafluoroethylene (CF2 CF2 ) moiety, in their molecular structures exhibit unique biological activities, or can be applied to functional materials such as liquid crystals and light-emitting materials. Although several methods for the syntheses of CF2 CF2 -containing organic molecules have been reported to date, they have been limited to methods using explosives and fluorinating agents. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop simple and efficient approaches to synthesize CF2 CF2 -containing organic molecules from readily available fluorinated substrates using carbon-carbon bond formation reactions. This personal account summarizes the simple and efficient transformation of functional groups at both ends of 4-bromo-3,3,4,4-tetrafluorobut-1-ene and discusses its synthetic applications to biologically active fluorinated sugars and functional materials, such as liquid crystals and light-emitting molecules.

Abstract
Olefins range amongst the most important motifs in organic chemistry. Hence, the development of novel olefin syntheses has remained a constant field of research in synthetic chemistry to date. Herein, we report the development of a modular olefination that converts aldehydes into olefins with thiols as reaction partners. The simple, transition metal-free protocol proceeds via an unsymmetrical bissulfone intermediate which is converted into the respective alkene in a Ramberg-Bäcklund-type process. Differently substituted olefins can be synthesized from readily available starting materials in typically good yields and stereoselectivities using basic laboratory chemicals exclusively. Complementary reaction conditions differing in the choice of solvent favor the E/Z-products respectively under kinetic control rendering this protocol an interesting economical addition to the family of olefin syntheses.

Abstract
Carbonyl olefinations are among the most important organic syntheses that form C=C bonds, as they usually have high yields and in addition offer excellent stereoselectivity. Due to these advantages, carbonyl olefinations have important pharmaceutical and industrial applications. These reactions contain an additional step of an α-functionalized carbanion to an aldehyde or ketone to produce alkenes, but syntheses performed using metal carbene complexes are also known. The Wittig reaction is an example of carbonyl olefination, one of the best ways to synthesize alkenes. This involves the chemical reaction between an aldehyde or ketone with a so-called Wittig reagent, for instance phosphonium ylide. Triphenylphosphine-derived ylides and trialkylphosphine-derived ylides are the most common phosphorous compounds used as Wittig reagents. The Wittig reaction is commonly involved in the synthesis of novel anti-cancer and anti-viral compounds. In recent decades, the use of ultrasound on the Wittig reaction (and on different modified Wittig syntheses, such as the Wittig-Horner reaction or the aza-Wittig method) has been studied as a green synthesis. In addition to the advantage of green synthesis, the use of ultrasounds in general also improved the yield and reduced the reaction time. All of these chemical syntheses conducted under ultrasound will be described further in the present review.

Abstract
The cis/trans geometry of olefins is known to dramatically influence the thermal and mechanical properties of polyalkenamers. Yet, polymerization methods that efficiently control this parameter are scarce. Here we report the development of a stereoretentive acyclic diene metathesis polymerization that uses the reactivity of dithiolate Ru carbenes combined with cis monomers. These Ru catalysts exhibit exquisite retention of the cis geometry and tolerate many polar functional groups, enabling the synthesis of all-cis polyesters, polycarbonates, polyethers and polysulfites. The stereoretentive acyclic diene metathesis polymerization is also characterized by low catalyst loadings and tolerance towards trans impurities in the monomer batch, which should facilitate large-scale implementation. Modulation of the reaction temperature and time leads to an erosion of stereoretention, permitting a stereocontrolled synthesis of polyalkenamers with predictable cis:trans ratios. The impact of the stereochemistry of the repeating alkenes on the thermal properties is clearly demonstrated through differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis.

Abstract
Abstract
Ethoxycarbonyl-triphenylphosphonium bromide reacts with orthoamides of alkynecarboxylic acids 14 to give vinylogous guanidinium bromides, which were transformed to the corresponding tetraphenylborates. In contrast, from CH2-acidic phosphonicesters and orthoamides 14 phosphorylated 1,1-diamino-butadienes can be obtained. Two of these products rearrange to 5-dimethylamino-4-diet-hylphosphono-2,4-hexadienic acid amides upon heating. Reaction of phenylsulfonylated carboxylic acids and alkylketones with orthoamides 14 proceeds under condensation affording 4-phenylsulfonyl-1,1-diamino-1,3-butadienes. Accordingly, the condensation reactions between the orthoamides 14 and isocyanoacetic acid ester deliver 2-isocyano-5,5-bis(dimethylamino)-2,4-pentadienic acid esters. In one of these reactions 5,6-diamino-pyridine-2-carboxylic acid ester is obtained as a by-product. Some of the ketene aminals exist as equilibrium mixtures of stereoisomers, which is a consequence of s-cis and s-trans isomerism of the butadiene unit.

Abstract
The stereoselective synthesis of C40-all-trans-carotenoids with the formal hexahydrobenzofuran skeletons aurochrome, auroxanthin, and equinenone-5',8'-epoxide is reported. The synthesis is based on a one-pot or stepwise double Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons (HWE) reaction of a terminal enantiopure C15-5,6-epoxycyclohexadienylphosphonate and a central C10-trienedial. The ring expansion of the epoxycyclohexadienylphosphonate, generated by a Stille cross-coupling reaction, to the hexahydrobenzofuran skeleton was promoted by the reaction conditions of the HWE reaction prior to double-bond formation.

Abstract
In this report, new, easily accessible reagents for highly Z-selective HWE reactions are presented. Alkyl di-(1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropyl)phosphonoacetates, structurally similar to Still-Gennari type reagents, were tested in HWE reactions with a series of various aldehydes. Very good Z-selectivity (up to a 98:2 Z:E ratio) was achieved in most cases along with high yields. Application of the new reagents may be a valuable, practical alternative to the well-established Still-Gennari or Ando Z-selective carbonyl group olefination protocols.

Abstract
Herein, we present the application of fluorinated carbohydrate-derived building blocks for α-hydroxy β-fluoro/β-trifluoromethyl and unsaturated phosphonates synthesis. Pudovik and Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons reactions were applied to achieve this goal. The proposed pathway of the key reactions is supported by the experimental results, as well as quantum chemical calculations. The structure of the products was established by spectroscopic (1D, 2D NMR) and spectrometric (MS) techniques. Based on our data received, we claim that the progress of the Pudovik and HWE reactions is significantly influenced by the acidic protons present in the molecules as assessed by pKa values of the reagent.

Abstract
Stereoselective total synthesis of structurally intriguing antimalarial macrolide strasseriolide A has been accomplished by adopting a convergent approach. The salient features of this synthesis include Co(BH4)2-mediated selective reduction of conjugated olefin, Crimmins propionate aldol, Evans alkylation, intermolecular Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons olefination, Yamaguchi macrolactonization, and selective saponification of ester moiety in the presence of a lactone functionality. The 13C{1H} NMR data of strasseriolide A were found to be very sensitive to its solution concentration.

Abstract
Methanedisulfonyl fluoride, CH2(SO2F)2, transforms aromatic aldehydes into β-arylethenesulfonyl fluorides, useful substrates for the SuFEx "click"-type transformations. The reaction mimics mechanism of the Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons olefination, which runs via addition of the carbanion, followed by cyclization-fragmentation of the four-membered ring intermediate. In the absence of base, electron-rich aldehydes follow an alternative pathway of the Knoevenagel condensation to provide unsaturated 1,1-disulfonyl fluorides. We demonstrate also trapping of elusive ethene-1,1-disulfonyl fluoride, CH2═C(SO2F)2, with 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) that forms zwitterionic adduct, characterized with X-ray studies.

Abstract
Stereoselective preparation of highly substituted olefins is still a severe challenge that requires well defined elimination precursors. Organoboron chemistry is particularly suited for the preparation of molecules with adjacent stereocenters. As organo boron substrates with leaving groups in β-position can undergo stereospecific syn- or anti-elimination, this chemistry harbors great potential for the synthesis of complex olefins. In recent years three main strategies emerged, which differ in their approach to the β-functionalized organoboron elimination precursor. (i) Stereoselective preparation of such elimination precursor can be achieved by addition of a boron-stabilized anion (d1 ) to an aldehyde or ketone (a1 ) or diastereoselective 1,3-rearrangement of suitable boron-ate-complexes. Stereospecific methods rely either on (ii) diastereospecific 1,2-metalate rearrangement of boron-ate-complexes that involve opening of appropriate heterocycles or (iii) addition of chiral carbenoids (d1 *) to chiral boronates (a1 *) with a leaving group in α-position.

Abstract
Two complementary catalytic protocols for the isomerization of stereoisomeric mixtures of vinylcyclopropanes are described. A commercially available cationic rhodium complex provides access to conjugated dienoates in high yield with excellent stereocontrol. The combination of a bisphosphine ligand and a ruthenium precatalyst affords cross-conjugated dienoates via a formal 1,3-ring opening. The products are obtained with moderate to high stereoselectivity. The ability of each type of dienoate to engage in [4 + 2] cycloaddition reactions has been demonstrated.
