Electrocatalytic formate and alcohol oxidation by hydride transfer at first-row transition metal complexes

The electrocatalytic oxidation of carbon-based liquid fuels, such as formic acid and alcohols, has important applications for our renewable energy transition. Molecular electrocatalysts based on transition metal complexes provide the opportunity to explore the interplay between precise catalyst design and electrocatalytic activity. Recent advances have seen the development of first-row transition metal electrocatalysts for these transformations that operate via hydride transfer between the substrate and catalyst. In this Frontier article, we present the key contributions to this field and discuss the proposed mechanisms for each case. These studies also reveal the remaining challenges for formate and alcohol oxidation with first-row transition metal systems, for which we provide perspectives on future directions for next-generation electrocatalyst design.

Counterintuitive chemoselectivity in the reduction of carbonyl compounds

The reactivity of carbonyl functional groups largely depends on the substituents on the carbon atom. Reversal of the commonly accepted order of reactivity of different carbonyl compounds requires novel synthetic approaches. Achieving selective reduction will enable the transformation of carbon resources such as plastic waste, carbon dioxide and biomass into valuable chemicals. In this Review, we explore the reduction of less reactive carbonyl groups in the presence of those typically considered more reactive. We discuss reductions, including the controlled reduction of ureas, amides and esters to aldehydes, as well as chemoselective reductions of carbonyl groups, including the reduction of ureas over carbamates, amides and esters; the reduction of amides over esters, ketones and aldehydes; and the reduction of ketones over aldehydes.

Electrohydrogenation of Nitriles with Amines by Cobalt Catalysis

Catalytic hydrogenation of nitriles represents an efficient and sustainable one-step synthesis of valuable bulk and fine chemicals. We report herein a molecular cobalt electrocatalyst for selective hydrogenative coupling of nitriles with amines using protons as the hydrogen source. The key to success for this reductive reaction is the use of an electrocatalytic approach for efficient cobalt-hydride generation through a sequence of cathodic reduction and protonation. As only electrons (e- ) and protons (H+ ) as the redox equivalent and hydrogen source, this general electrohydrogenation protocol is showcased by highly selective and straightforward synthesis of various functionalized and structurally diverse amines, as well as deuterium isotope labeling applications. Mechanistic studies reveal that the electrogenerated cobalt-hydride transfer to nitrile process is the rate-determining step.

Electrocatalysis with Molecular Transition-Metal Complexes for Reductive Organic Synthesis

Electrocatalysis enables the formation or cleavage of chemical bonds by a genuine use of electrons or holes from an electrical energy input. As such, electrocatalysis offers resource-economical alternative pathways that bypass sacrificial, waste-generating reagents often required in classical thermal redox reactions. In this Perspective, we showcase the exploitation of molecular electrocatalysts for electrosynthesis, in particular for reductive conversion of organic substrates. Selected case studies illustrate that efficient molecular electrocatalysts not only are appropriate redox shuttles but also embrace the features of organometallic catalysis to facilitate and control chemical steps. From these examples, guidelines are proposed for the design of molecular electrocatalysts suited to the reduction of organic substrates. We finally expose opportunities brought by catalyzed electrosynthesis to functionalize organic backbones, namely using sustainable building blocks.

Electrochemical CO2 Reduction Catalyzed by Binuclear LRe2(CO)6Cl2 and LMn2(CO)6Br2 Complexes with an Internal Proton Source

The synthesis of certain commodity chemicals, e.g., methanol and acetic acid, relies on CO, which is currently mainly produced by the combustion of carbon or natural gas. Photo- or electrochemical conversion of atmospheric CO₂ to CO represents an attractive alternative strategy as this approach is carbon-neutral. Such photo- or electrochemically formed CO can also be used in the Fischer-Tropsch process forming liquid hydrocarbons for energy storage applications. The multiple electroreduction of CO₂ is preferably coupled with proton transfer steps as this requires less energy than the single outer-sphere 1e^- reduction of CO₂.In 1984 and 2011, it was shown that [(L^bpy)Re(CO)₃Cl] (1) and [(L^bpy)Mn(CO)₃Br] (2), respectively, mediate the electrochemical 2e^-/2H⁺ reduction of CO₂ forming CO and water (L^bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine). Since proton management is crucial for catalysis, recently the impact of internal proton sources close to the axial position in such complexes has been investigated. However, binuclear complexes have been used rarely as mediators although it has been shown very early for 1 that electron management is also important: the 2e^-/2H⁺ reduction pathway with 1 exhibits a higher reaction rate than going via the singly reduced species, though the pathway requires a higher overpotential. In this Account, we focus on recent developments of binuclear LMn₂(CO)₆ and LRe₂(CO)₆ mediators with an internal phenol group in the electroreduction of CO₂. In contrast to mononuclear derivatives, for which the impact of the internal proton source on catalysis is very diverse, we always observed a higher reaction rate and for the Mn complexes also a lower overpotential with the binuclear complexes compared to the mononuclear variants. Spectroscopic, electrochemical, and computational studies on the mono- and binuclear complexes shed light on their reactivity under reductive conditions, elucidated the structure of reduced species, unraveled the kinetics for catalytically productive and unproductive (side) reactions, and allowed us to derive some hypothesis on the CO₂ reduction mechanism. Finally, I emphasize that the electrohydrogenation of the polar double bonds by the binuclear complex LMn₂(CO)₆ with a central phenol unit is not restricted to CO₂ but is also applicable to organic compounds with C═O bonds.
