The Rise of Manganese-Catalyzed Reduction Reactions

Tandem manganese catalysis for the chemo-, regio-, and stereoselective hydroboration of terminal alkynes: in situ precatalyst activation as a key to enhanced chemoselectivity

The manganese(ii) complex [Mn(iPrPNP)Cl2] (iPrPNP = 2,6-bis(diisopropylphosphinomethyl)pyridine) was found to catalyze the stereo- and regioselective hydroboration of terminal alkynes employing HBPin (pinacolborane). In the absence of in situ activators, mixtures of alkynylboronate and E-alkenylboronate esters were formed, whereas when NaHBEt3 was employed as the in situ activator, E-alkenylboronate esters were exclusively accessed. Mechanistic studies revealed a tandem C-H borylation/semihydrogenation pathway accounting for the formation of the products. Stoichiometric reactions hint toward reaction of a Mn-H active species with the terminal alkyne as the catalyst entry pathway to the cycle, whereas reaction with HBPin led to catalyst deactivation.

Hydrogenation of Terminal Alkenes Catalyzed by Air-Stable Mn(I) Complexes Bearing an N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Based PCP Pincer Ligand

Efficient hydrogenations of terminal alkenes with molecular hydrogen catalyzed by well-defined bench stable Mn(I) complexes containing an N-heterocyclic carbene-based PCP pincer ligand are described. These reactions are environmentally benign and atom economic, implementing an inexpensive, earth abundant non-precious metal catalyst. A range of aromatic and aliphatic alkenes were efficiently converted into alkanes in good to excellent yields. The hydrogenation proceeds at 100 °C with catalyst loadings of 0.25-0.5 mol %, 2.5-5 mol % base (KOt Bu) and a hydrogen pressure of 20 bar. Mechanistic insight into the catalytic reaction is provided by means of DFT calculations.

Electronic Structure of the Complete Series of Gas-Phase Manganese Acetylacetonates by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

Metal centers in transition metal-ligand complexes occur in a variety of oxidation states causing their redox activity and therefore making them relevant for applications in physics and chemistry. The electronic state of these complexes can be studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy, which is, however, due to the complex spectral signature not always straightforward. Here, we study the electronic structure of gas-phase cationic manganese acetylacetonate complexes Mn(acac)1-3+ using X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the metal center and ligand constituents. The spectra are well reproduced by multiconfigurational wave function theory, time-dependent density functional theory as well as parameterized crystal field and charge transfer multiplet simulations. This enables us to get detailed insights into the electronic structure of ground-state Mn(acac)1-3+ and extract empirical parameters such as crystal field strength and exchange coupling from X-ray excitation at both the metal and ligand sites. By comparison to X-ray absorption spectra of neutral, solvated Mn(acac)2,3 complexes, we also show that the effect of coordination on the L3 excitation energy, routinely used to identify oxidation states, can contribute about 40-50% to the observed shift, which for the current study is 1.9 eV per oxidation state.

Bis(N-Heterocyclic Carbene) Manganese(I) Complexes: Efficient and Simple Hydrogenation Catalysts

The use of bis(NHC) manganese(I) complexes 3 as catalysts for the hydrogenation of esters was investigated. For that purpose, a series of complexes has been synthesized via an improved two step procedure utilizing bis(NHC)-BEt3 adducts. By applying complexes 3 with KHBEt3 as additive, various aromatic and aliphatic esters were hydrogenated successfully at mild temperatures and low catalyst loadings, highlighting the efficiency of the novel catalytic system. The versatility of the developed catalytic system was further demonstrated by the hydrogenation of other substrate classes like ketones, nitriles, N-heteroarenes and alkenes. Mechanistic experiments and DFT calculations indicate an inner sphere mechanism with the loss of one CO ligand and reveal the role of BEt3 as cocatalyst.

Hydrosilylation of Terminal Alkynes Catalyzed by an Air-Stable Manganese-NHC Complex

In recent years, catalysis with base metal manganese has received a significant amount of interest. Catalysis with manganese complexes having N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) is relatively underdeveloped in comparison to the extensively investigated manganese catalysts possessing pincer ligands (particularly phosphine-based ligands). Herein, we describe the synthesis of two imidazolium salts decorated with picolyl arms (L₁ and L₂) as NHC precursors. Facile coordination of L₁ and L₂ with MnBr(CO)₅ in the presence of a base resulted in the formation manganese(I)-NHC complexes (1 and 2) as an air-stable solid in good isolated yield. Single-crystal X-ray analysis revealed the structure of the cationic complexes [Mn(CO)₃(NHC)][PF₆] with tridentate N,C,N binding of the NHC ligand in a facile fashion. Along with a few known manganese(I) complexes, these Mn(I)-NHC complexes 1 and 2 were tested for the hydrosilylation of terminal alkynes. Complex 1 was proved to be an effective catalyst for the hydrosilylation of terminal alkynes with good selectivity toward the less thermodynamically stable β-(Z)-vinylsilanes. This method provided good regioselectivity (anti-Markovnikov addition) and stereoselectivity (β-(Z)-product). Experimental evidence suggested that the present hydrosilylation pathway involved an organometallic mechanism with manganese(I)-silyl species as a possible reactive intermediate.

Theory-guided development of homogeneous catalysts for the reduction of CO2 to formate, formaldehyde, and methanol derivatives

The stepwise catalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO₂) to formic acid, formaldehyde, and methanol opens non-fossil pathways to important platform chemicals. The present article aims at identifying molecular control parameters to steer the selectivity to the three distinct reduction levels using organometallic catalysts of earth-abundant first-row metals. A linear scaling relationship was developed to map the intrinsic reactivity of 3d transition metal pincer complexes to their activity and selectivity in CO₂ hydrosilylation. The hydride affinity of the catalysts was used as a descriptor to predict activity/selectivity trends in a composite volcano picture, and the outstanding properties of cobalt complexes bearing bis(phosphino)triazine PNP-type pincer ligands to reach the three reduction levels selectively under different reaction conditions could thus be rationalized. The implications of the composite volcano picture were successfully experimentally validated with selected catalysts, and the challenging intermediate level of formaldehyde could be accessed in over 80% yield with the cobalt complex 6. The results underpin the potential of tandem computational-experimental approaches to propel catalyst design for CO₂-based chemical transformations.

Manganese-Catalyzed Chemoselective Hydrosilylation of Nitroarenes: Sustainable Route to Aromatic Amines

Herein we report efficient catalytic hydrosilylations of nitroarenes to form the corresponding aromatic amines using a well-defined manganese(II)-NNO pincer complex with a low catalyst loading (1 mol %) under solvent-free conditions. This base-metal-catalyzed hydrosilylation is an easy and sustainable alternative to classical hydrogenation. A large variety of nitroarenes bearing various functionalities were selectively transformed into the corresponding aromatic amines in good yields. The potential utility of the present catalytic protocol was demonstrated by the preparation of commercial drug molecules.

Selective oxidation of silanes into silanols with water using [MnBr(CO)5] as a precatalyst

The development of earth-abundant catalysts for the selective conversion of silanes to silanols with water as an oxidant generating valuable hydrogen as the only by-product continues to be a challenge. Here, we demonstrate that [MnBr(CO)₅] is a highly active precatalyst for this reaction, operating under neutral conditions and avoiding the undesired formation of siloxanes. As a result, a broad substrate scope, including primary and secondary silanes, could be converted to the desired products. The turnover performances of the catalyst were also examined, yielding a maximum TOF of 4088 h^-1. New light was shed on the debated mechanism of the interaction between [MnBr(CO)₅] and Si-H bonds based on the reaction kinetics (including KIEs of PhMe₂SiD and D₂O) and spectroscopic techniques (FT-IR, GC-TCD, ¹H-, ²⁹Si-, and ¹³C-NMR). The initial activation of [MnBr(CO)₅] was found to result from the formation of a manganese(i) hydride species and R₃SiBr, and the experimental data are most consistent with a catalytic cycle comprising a cationic tricarbonyl Mn(i) unit as the active framework.

Homogeneous Manganese-Catalyzed Hydrofunctionalizations of Alkenes and Alkynes: Catalytic and Mechanistic Tendencies

In recent years, many manganese-based homogeneous catalytic precursors have been developed as powerful alternatives in organic synthesis. Among these, the hydrofunctionalizations of unsaturated C-C bonds correspond to outstanding ways to afford compounds with more versatile functional groups, which are commonly used as building blocks in the production of fine chemicals and feedstock for the industrial field. Herein, we present an account of the Mn-catalyzed homogeneous hydrofunctionalizations of alkenes and alkynes with the main objective of finding catalytic and mechanistic tendencies that could serve as a platform for the works to come.

Manganese Alkyl Carbonyl Complexes: From Iconic Stoichiometric Textbook Reactions to Catalytic Applications

The activation of weakly polarized bonds represents a challenging, yet highly valuable process. In this context, precious metal catalysts have been used as reliable compounds for the activation of rather inert bonds for the last several decades. Nevertheless, base-metal complexes including cobalt, iron, or nickel are currently promising candidates for the substitution of noble metals in order to develop more sustainable processes. In the past few years, manganese(I)-based complexes were heavily employed as efficient catalysts for (de)hydrogenation reactions. However, the vast majority of these complexes operate via a metal-ligand bifunctionality as already well implemented for precious metals decades ago. Although high reactivity can be achieved in various reactions, this concept is often not applicable to certain transformations due to outer-sphere mechanisms. In this Account, we outline the potential of alkylated Mn(I)-carbonyl complexes for the activation of nonpolar and moderately polar E-H (E = H, B, C, Si) bonds and disclose our successful approach for the utilization of complexes in the field of homogeneous catalysis. This involves the rational design of manganese complexes for hydrogenation reactions involving ketones, nitriles, carbon dioxide, and alkynes. In addition to that, the reduction of alkenes by dihydrogen could be achieved by a series of well-defined manganese complexes which was not possible before. Furthermore, we elucidate the potential of our Mn-based catalysts in the field of hydrofunctionalization reactions for carbon-carbon multiple bonds. Our investigations unveiled novel insights into reaction pathways of dehydrogenative silylation of alkenes and trans-1,2-diboration of terminal alkynes, which was not yet reported for transition metals. Due to rational catalyst design, these transformations can be achieved under mild reaction conditions. Delightfully, all of the employed complexes are bench-stable compounds. We took advantage of the fact that Mn(I) alkyl complexes are known to undergo migratory insertion of the alkyl group into the CO ligand, yielding an unsaturated acyl intermediate. Hydrogen atom abstraction by the acyl ligand then paves the way to an active species for a variety of catalytic transformations which all proceed via an inner-sphere process. Although these textbook reactions have been well-known for decades, the application in catalytic transformations is still in its infancy. A brief historical overview of alkylated manganese(I)-carbonyl complexes is provided, covering the synthesis and especially iconic stoichiometric transformations, e.g., carbonylation, as intensively examined by Calderazzo, Moss, and others. An outline of potential future applications of defined alkyl manganese complexes will be given, which may inspire researchers for the development of novel (base-)metal catalysts.

An Adaptive Rhodium Catalyst to Control the Hydrogenation Network of Nitroarenes

An adaptive catalytic system that provides control over the nitroarene hydrogenation network to prepare a wide range of aniline and hydroxylamine derivatives is presented. This system takes advantage of a delicate interplay between a rhodium(III) center and a Lewis acidic borane introduced in the secondary coordination sphere of the metal. The high chemoselectivity of the catalyst in the presence of various potentially vulnerable functional groups and its readiness to be deployed at a preparative scale illustrate its practicality. Mechanistic studies and density functional theory (DFT) methods were used to shed light on the mode of functioning of the catalyst and elucidate the origin of adaptivity. The competition for interaction with boron between a solvent molecule and a substrate was found crucial for adaptivity. When operating in THF, the reduction network stops at the hydroxylamine platform, whereas the reaction can be directed to the aniline platform in toluene.

Manganese-catalyzed Synthesis of Imines from Primary Alcohols and Aromatic Amines

Herein, we describe the synthesis of a wide variety of imines through oxidative coupling of alcohols and (hetero)aromatic amines catalyzed by Mn complexes bearing N^N triazole ligands. A wide variety of imines in excellent yields (up to 99%) have been prepared. Mn-based catalysts proved to be highly efficient and versatile, allowing for the first time, the preparation of several imines containing N-based heterocycles.

Manganese-catalyzed transfer semihydrogenation of internal alkynes to E-alkenes with iPrOH as hydrogen source

The Mn-catalyzed transfer semihydrogenation of internal alkynes to E-alkenes is reported herein, along with Mn-catalyzed hydration of α-keto alkynes. Mechanistic studies displayed an asymmetrical Mn-hydride species performing the catalytic turnover.
