Acrylamide-Based Pd-Nanoparticle Carriers as Smart Catalysts for the Suzuki–Miyaura Cross-Coupling of Amino Acids

Silica@poly(chitosan-N-isopropylacrylamide-methacrylic acid) microgels: Extraction of palladium (II) ions and in situ formation of palladium nanoparticles for pollutant reduction

Most of the transition metal ions and organic dyes are toxic in nature. Therefore, their removal from water is imperative for human health. For this purpose, various types of systems have been developed to tackle either transition metal ions or organic dyes individually. A core-shell microgel system is introduced which is capable of effectively removing both types (toxic organic dyes and transition metal ions) of pollutants. A long-rod-shaped silica@poly(chitosan-N-isopropylacrylamide-methacrylic acid) S@P(CS-NIPAM-MAA) S@P(CNM) core-shell microgel system was developed by free radical precipitation polymerization method (FRPPM). S@P(CNM) was utilized as an adsorbent for extracting palladium (II) (Pd (II)) ions from water under different concentrations of S@P(CNM), several agitation times, palladium (II) ion content, and pH levels. The adsorption data of Pd (II) ions on S@P(CNM) was evaluated by various adsorption isotherms. The kinetic study was investigated by employing pseudo-2nd order (Ps2O), Elovich model (ElM), intra-particle diffusion (IPDM), and pseudo-1st order (Ps1O). Additionally, palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) were generated via in-situ reduction of adsorbed Pd (II) ions within the P(CNM) shell region of S@P(CNM). The resulting Pd NPs loaded S@P(CNM) exhibited the capability to reduce organic pollutants like methyl orange (MeO), 4-nitrophenol (4NiP), methylene blue (MeB), and Rhodamine B (RhB) from aqueous medium. 0.766 min-1, 0.433 min-1, 0.682 min-1, and 1.140 min-1 were the values of pseudo 1st order rate constant (kobs) for catalytic reduction of MeB, 4NiP, MeO, and RhB respectively. The S@Pd-P(CNM) system exhibits significant catalytic potential for various organic transformations.

A Critical Review of Palladium Nanoparticles Decorated in Smart Microgels

Palladium nanoparticles (Pd) combined with smart polymer microgels have attracted significant interest in the past decade. These hybrid materials have unique properties that make them appealing for various applications in biology, environmental remediation, and catalysis. The responsive nature of the microgels in these hybrids holds great promise for a wide range of applications. The literature contains diverse morphologies and architectures of Pd nanoparticle-based hybrid microgels, and the architecture of these hybrids plays a vital role in determining their potential uses. Therefore, specific Pd nanoparticle-based hybrid microgels are designed for specific applications. This report provides an overview of recent advancements in the classification, synthesis, properties, characterization, and uses of Pd nanostructures loaded into microgels. Additionally, the report discusses the latest progress in biomedical, catalytic, environmental, and sensing applications of Pd-based hybrid microgels in a tutorial manner.

Continuous Ligand-Free Catalysis Using a Hybrid Polymer Network Support

Although the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries primarily utilize batch homogeneous reactions to carry out chemical transformations, emerging platforms seek to improve existing shortcomings by designing effective heterogeneous catalysis systems in continuous flow reactors. In this work, we present a versatile network-supported palladium (Pd) catalyst using a hybrid polymer of poly(methylvinylether-alt-maleic anhydride) and branched polyethyleneimine for intensified continuous flow synthesis of complex organic compounds via heterogeneous Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling and nitroarene hydrogenation reactions. The hydrophilicity of the hybrid polymer network facilitates the reagent mass transfer throughout the bulk of the catalyst particles. Through rapid automated exploration of the continuous and discrete parameters, as well as substrate scope screening, we identified optimal hybrid network-supported Pd catalyst composition and process parameters for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of aryl bromides with steady-state yields up to 92% with a nominal residence time of 20 min. The developed heterogeneous catalytic system exhibits high activity and mechanical stability with no detectable Pd leaching at reaction temperatures up to 95 °C. Additionally, the versatility of the hybrid network-supported Pd catalyst is demonstrated by successfully performing continuous nitroarene hydrogenation with short residence times (<5 min) at room temperature. Room temperature hydrogenation yields of >99% were achieved in under 2 min nominal residence times with no leaching and catalyst deactivation for more than 20 h continuous time on stream. This catalytic system shows its industrial utility with significantly improved reaction yields of challenging substrates and its utility of environmentally-friendly solvent mixtures, high reusability, scalable and cost-effective synthesis, and multi-reaction successes.

Anisotropic Microgels by Supramolecular Assembly and Precipitation Polymerization of Pyrazole-Modified Monomers

Soft colloidal macromolecular structures with programmable chemical functionalities, size, and shape are important building blocks for the fabrication of catalyst systems and adaptive biomaterials for tissue engineering. However, the development of the easy upscalable and template-free synthesis methods to obtain such colloids lack in understanding of molecular interactions that occur in the formation mechanisms of polymer colloids. Herein, a computer simulation-driven experimental synthesis approach based on the supramolecular self-assembly followed by polymerization of tailored pyrazole-modified monomers is developed. Simulations for a series of pyrazole-modified monomers with different numbers of pyrazole groups, different length and polarity of spacers between pyrazole groups and the polymerizable group are first performed. Based on simulations, monomers able to undergo π-π stacking and guide the formation of supramolecular bonds between polymer segments are synthesized and these are used in precipitation polymerization to synthesize anisotropic microgels. This study demonstrates that microgel morphologies can be tuned from spherical, raspberry-like to dumbbell-like by the increase of the pyrazole-modified monomer loading, which is concentrated at periphery of growing microgels. Combining experimental and simulation results, this work provides a quantitative and predictive approach for guiding microgel design that can be further extended to a diversity of colloidal systems and soft materials with superior properties.

Multifunctional Core-Shell Microgels as Pd-Nanoparticle Containing Nanoreactors With Enhanced Catalytic Turnover

In this work, we present core-shell microgels with tailor-made architecture and properties for the incorporation of palladium nanoparticles. The microgel core consists of poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM) copolymerized with methacrylic acid (MAc) as anchor point for the incorporation of palladium nanoparticles. The microgel shell is prepared by copolymerization of NIPAM and the UV-sensitive comonomer 2-hydroxy-4-(methacryloyloxy)-benzophenone (HMABP). The obtained core-shell architecture was analyzed by means of photon correlation spectroscopy, while the incorporated amount of HMABP was further confirmed via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Subsequently, the microgel system was used for loading with palladium nanoparticles and their size and localization were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The catalytic activity of the monodisperse palladium nanoparticles was tested by reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol. The obtained reaction rate constants for the core-shell system showed enhanced activity compared to the Pd-loaded bare core system. Furthermore, it was possible to recycle the catalyst several times. Analysis via transmission electron microscopy revealed, that the incorporated palladium nanoparticles emerged undamaged after the reaction and subsequent purification process since no aggregation or loss in size was observed.
