AIM

Evaluation of the push-out bond strength (PBS) of zirconia post-bonded to radicular dentin after using different final irrigants (MTAD, Malachite green (MG), Ti-sapphire laser and Salvadora persica (S.persica).

MATERIAL AND METHOD

Forty human permanent single-rooted were decoronated above the cement-enamel junction. An experienced endodontist performed all the root canal instrumentation using ProTaper universal rotary files. Canals were irrigated using 5.25% NaOCl solution followed by EDTA as a final sterilant. Obturation with gutta-percha using AH Plus sealer was performed. Post-space preparation was completed using Gates Glidden and specimens were randomly assigned to four groups based on the final disinfectant received (n=10). Group 1: 5.25% NaOCl + MTAD, group 2: 5.25% NaOCl + MG, group 3: 5.25% NaOCl +Ti-sapphire laser, and group 4: 5.25% NaOCl + S. persica. The chemically polymerized resin was used to lute zirconia posts. PBS and failure mode analysis were performed using a universal testing machine and stereomicroscope at 40X magnification. Data were compared between the two groups with 95% CI using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with the Tukey post hoc test. p=0.05.

RESULTS

Group4(5.25% NaOCl+ S.persica) specimens demonstrated the maximum (8.94±0.14 MPa) bond strength. Conversely, the apical third of Group 2 (5.25% NaOCl+ MG) (2.87±0.15 MPa) samples revealed the minimum bond strength scores. Intergroup comparison exposed that Group 1 (1.3% NaOCl+ MTAD), Group 3 (5.25% NaOCl+Ti-sapphire laser), and Group 4 (5.25% NaOCl+ S. persica) at all three-thirds unveiled no significant difference in PBS (p<0.05).

CONCLUSION

Ti-sapphire laser and Salvedora Persica possess the potential to be used as a final root canal irrigant to improve the push-out bond strength of zirconia post-to-root dentin.

Digital evaluation of the effect of nanosilica-lithium spray coating on the internal and marginal fit of high translucent zirconia crowns

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the effect of a nanosilica-lithium spray coating on the internal and marginal fit of high translucent zirconia crowns using a digital evaluation method.

METHODS

A three-dimensional analysis model of a zirconia abutment was digitally scanned using a dental scanner, and 30 monolithic high translucent zirconia crowns were designed and fabricated. They were divided into groups (n = 10) according to the surface treatment method: (1) no treatment: as-sintered zirconia; (2) airborne-particle abrasion with 50 μm Al₂O₃ particles; and (3) nanosilica-lithium spray coating. Three-dimensional data for the abutment, crown, and crown seated on the abutment were obtained using a dental scanner. The three-dimensional seated fit between the crown and abutment was reconstructed using registration technology, and a three-dimensional (3D) deviation analysis was used to evaluate the effect of different modification methods on the internal and marginal fit of the crowns using root mean square (RMS) values.

RESULTS

The 3D deviation analysis of all groups conformed to a normal distribution (P > 0.05), and the variance was homogeneous (P > 0.05). The different surface treatments had no significant effect on the RMS values in the occlusal, axial, and marginal regions of the high translucent zirconia crowns (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Nanosilica-lithium spray coating for the modification of as-sintered zirconia is clinically feasible and does not affect the internal or marginal fit of high translucent zirconia crowns.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Nanosilica-lithium spray coating does not affect the adaptation of zirconia crowns and is a clinically feasible surface treatment method for zirconia. It is unnecessary to add the setting values of the internal and marginal fit when fabricating nanosilica-lithium-sprayed zirconia crowns.

Flexural Strength of Different Monolithic Computer-Assisted Design and Computer-Assisted Manufacturing Ceramic Materials upon Different Thermal Tempering Processes

Objective  Strength of ceramics related with sintering procedure. This study investigated the influence of different tempering processes on flexural strength of three monolithic ceramic materials.

Materials and Methods  Specimens were prepared in bar-shape (width × length × thickness = 4 × 14 × 1.2 mm) from yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline (Y-TZP, inCoris TZI [I]), zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS, Vita Suprinity [V]), and lithium disilicate (LS ₂ , IPS e.max CAD [E]), and sintered with different tempering processes: slow (S), normal (N), and fast (F) cooling procedure ( n = 15/group). Flexural strength (σ ) was determined using three-point bending test apparatus at 1 mm/min crosshead speed.

Statistical Analysis  The analysis of variance and Bonferroni’s multiple comparisons were determined for significant difference (α = 0.05). Weibull analysis was applied for survival probability, Weibull modulus (m), and characteristics strength (σ _o ). Microstructures were evaluated with scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction.

Results  The mean ± standard deviation (MPa) of σ, m, and σ _o were: 1,183.98 ± 204.26, 6.23, 1,271.80 for IS; 1,084.43 ± 204.79, 5.76, 1,170.08 for IN; 777.19 ± 99.77, 8.78, 819.96 for IF; 267.15 ± 32.71, 9.11, 281.48 for VS; 218.43 ± 38.46, 6.40, 234.23 for VN; 252.67 ± 37.58, 7.20, 269.23 for VF; 392.09 ± 37.91, 11.37, 409.23 for ES; 378.88 ± 55.38, 7.45, 403.11 for EN, and 390.94 ± 25.34, 16.00, 403.51 for EF. Thermal tempering significantly affected flexural strength of Y-TZP ( p < 0.05), but not either ZLS or LS ₂ ( p > 0.05). Y-TZP indicated significantly higher flexural strength upon slow tempering than others.

Conclusion  Enhancing flexural strength of Y-TZP can be achieved through slow tempering process and was suggested as a process for monolithic zirconia. Strengthening of ZLS and LS ₂ cannot be accomplished through tempering; thus, either S-, N-, or F- tempering procedure can be performed. Nevertheless, to minimize sintering time, rapid thermal tempering is more preferable for both ZLS and LS ₂ .

Polymerization Shrinkage and Degree of Conversion of New Zirconia-Reinforced Rice Husk Nanohybrid Composite

Objectives  This study aimed to compare the polymerization shrinkage and degree of conversion of new zirconia-reinforced rice husk nanohybrid composite with commercialized microhybrid and nanofilled composites.

Materials and Methods  Overall, 180 samples were used for polymerization shrinkage (buoyancy and optical methods) and degree of conversion tests in which they were divided into Group 1, nanofilled composite (Filtek-Z350- XT; 3M ESPE, St Paul, MN 55144-1000, USA), Group 2, microhybrid composite (Zmack-Comp), and Group 3, nanohybrid composite (Zr-Hybrid). Polymerization shrinkage test was performed using buoyancy and optical methods. For buoyancy method, samples were weighed in air and water to calculate the shrinkage value, whereas, for optical method, images of nonpolymerized samples were captured under a digital microscope and recaptured again after light-cured to calculate the percentage of shrinkage. Degree of conversion was tested using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy spectrometer.

Statistical Analysis  Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance complemented by post hoc Dunnett’s T3 test for polymerization shrinkage and Tukey’s honestly significant difference test for degree of conversion. Level of significance was set at p < 0.05.

Results  Group 3 demonstrated similar polymerization shrinkage with Group 1, but lower shrinkage ( p < 0.05) than Group 2 based on buoyancy method. However, optical method ( p < 0.05) showed that Group 3 had the lowest shrinkage, followed by Group 1 and lastly Group 2. Besides, Group 3 showed a significantly higher degree of conversion ( p < 0.05) than Group 1 and comparable conversion value with Group 2.

Conclusions  Zirconia-reinforced rice husk nanohybrid composite showed excellent shrinkage and conversion values, hence can be considered as an alternative to commercially available composite resins.

Bonding Strength of Luting Cement to Zirconia-Based Ceramic Under Different Surface Treatments

OBJECTIVES

 The aim of this study was to evaluate the bonding strength of self-adhesive luting cement to zirconia under different surface treatments.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

 Thirty-two zirconia samples were randomly divided into eight experimental groups based on the surface treatment employed (Control: no surface treatment; PMM: wear with diamond bur; JAT: blasting with glass beads; PMA: wear with a medium-roughness milling machine; Primer: primer application on the surface without treatment; PMM +Primer: PMM treatment plus primer application; JAT+Primer: JAT treatment plus primer application; and PMA+Primer: PMA treatment plus primer application). Cement cylinders were built on the ceramic surfaces, and the groups were subdivided according to the storage time employed (i.e., 24 hours or 60 days). After storage, the samples were subjected to microshear testing.

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS

 The Kruskal-Wallis test followed by the Dunn test was employed for comparison between the groups (p < 0.05).

RESULTS

 The PMM group yielded the optimal results and the mean values increased after both storage times following the primer application. The Control, PMA, and JAT groups gave similar results after 24 hours, while the JAT group gave superior results following primer application over this storage time. After 60 days of storage, all groups gave improved results following chemical treatment with a primer.

CONCLUSION

 It was concluded that mechanical preparation using the diamond bur followed by primer application significantly improved the bond strength between the ceramic and the luting cement.
