Abstract
Allenes with different substituents at their terminal carbon atom display axial chirality and can be obtained in enantiopure form by a photochemical deracemization protocol. It has now been studied under which conditions allenoic acid derivatives undergo a Diels-Alder reaction with 1,3-cyclopentadienes and which products result. Cyclic derivatives (lactams, lactones) underwent an exo-selective reaction catalyzed by the Lewis acid Eu(fod)3, while acyclic derivatives yielded with high preference the endo-products (EtAlCl2 as the preferred Lewis acid). The exocyclic double bond forms with exquisite diastereoselectivity and the chirality transfer is close to perfect. The method was applied to the synthesis of the sesquiterpenes β-santalol (1) and 10(E)-β-santalic acid (13).

Abstract
Indanones are prominent motifs found in number of natural products and pharmaceuticals. Particularly, 1-indanones occupy important niche in chemical landscape due to their easy accessibility and versatile reactivity. In the past few years, significant advancement has been achieved regarding cyclization of 1-indanone core. The present review focuses on recent (2016-2022) annulations involving 1-indanones for the construction of fused- and spirocyclic frameworks. In this context, new strategies for synthesis of various carbocyclic as well as heterocyclic skeletons are demonstrated. Mechanistic aspects of representative reactions are illustrated for better understanding of reaction pathways. A large number of transformations described in this review offer stereoselective formation of desired polycyclic compounds. Importantly, several reactions provide biologically relevant compounds and natural products, such as, plecarpenene/plecarpenone, swinhoeisterol A, cephanolides A-D, diptoindonesin G and atlanticone C.

Abstract
While 2-alk-ω-enyloxy-sustituted benzaldehydes do not display any photochemical reactivity at the arene core, the respective iminium perchlorates were found to undergo efficient reactions either upon direct irradiation (λ=366 nm) or under sensitizing conditions (λ=420 nm, 2.5 mol% thioxanthen-9-one). Three pathways were found: (a) Most commonly, the reaction led to benzoxacyclic products in which the olefin in the tether underwent a formal, yet unprecedented carboformylation (13 examples, 44-99 % yield). The cascade process occurred with high diastereoselectivity and was found to be stereoconvergent. (b) If a substituent resides in the 3-position of the benzene ring, a meta photocycloaddition was observed which produced tetracyclic skeletons with five stereogenic centers in excellent regio- and diastereoselectivity (2 examples, 58-79 % yield). (c) If the tether was internally substituted at the alkene, an arene photocycloaddition was avoided and an azetidine was formed in an aza Paternò-Büchi reaction (2 examples, 95-98 % yield).

Abstract
AbstractPhotochemical cascade (domino) reactions provide a unique opportunity for the construction of complex molecular architectures. Specifically, an intramolecular ortho photocycloaddition of 7-(alkenyloxy)-indanones triggers a sequence of consecutive reactions that can lead in a single operation to the complete skeleton of two important classes of sesquiterpenes: protoilludanes and prezizaenes. In the former case, two transformations follow the initial photocycloaddition, while in the latter case, there are three consecutive transformations, two of which are initiated by a photon. Remarkably, the reaction cascades proceed with exquisite diastereoselectivity, generating three (protoilludane) or five (prezizaene) stereogenic centers with defined relative configurations.1 Introduction2 First Encounter and Initial Studies3 Protoilludane-Type Sesquiterpenes4 Prezizaene-Type Sesquiterpenes5 Enantioselectivity6 Perspective and Summary

Abstract
The prezizane-type sesquiterpene agarozizanol B was synthesized employing a photochemical cascade reaction as the key step. Starting from a readily available 1-indanone with a tethered olefin, a strained tetracyclic skeleton was assembled which contained all carbon atoms of the sesquiterpene with the correct relative configuration. The conversion into the tricyclic prezizane skeleton was accomplished by a strategic cyclopropane bond cleavage. Prior to the cyclopropane ring opening an adaption of the oxidation state was required, which could be combined with a reductive resolution step. After removal of two functional groups, the natural product was obtained both in racemic form or, if resolved, as the (+)-enantiomer which was shown to be identical to the natural product.

Abstract
Intramolecular photocycloaddition reactions of 3,4-alkoxybenzonitriles derived from vanillin with alkenes have been investigated. In contrast to previous reports on photochemical reactions with these compounds, mainly [2 + 3] cycloaddition has been observed. A competing [2 + 2] photocycloaddition plays a minor role. Most probably, these additions occur at the singlet state S1. In the case of a triplet reaction, a different regioselectivity of the [2 + 2] cycloaddition would be observed. Linear and angular [2 + 3] cycloadducts are formed as major products. The first isomer is transformed in the second one by a photochemical vinyl-cyclopropane rearrangement, which increases the selectivity of the reaction. The influence of the substitution pattern on the reactivity and the selectivity has also been investigated.

Abstract
Natural products have been a great source for drug leads, due to a vast majority possessing unique chemical structures. Such an example is the protoilludane class of natural products which contain an annulated 5/6/4-ring system and are almost exclusively produced by fungi. They have been reported to possess a diverse range of bioactivities, including antimicrobial, antifungal and cytotoxic properties. In this review, we discuss the isolation, structure elucidation and any reported bioactivities of this compound class, including establishment of stereochemistry and any total syntheses of these natural products. A total of 180 protoilludane natural products, isolated in the last 70 years, from fungi, plant and marine sources are covered, highlighting their structural diversity and potential in drug discovery.
