Two-piece nasal septum prosthesis for a large nasal septum perforation: a clinical report

Nasal septum perforation presents with the symptoms of epistaxis and crusting. Obturation of the defect will decrease the symptoms and increase patient comfort. Prosthetic closure is more predictable and thus the treatment of choice in larger defects. This article describes a procedure for construction of a magnet-retained, heat-processed acrylic nasal septum prosthesis. The two-piece nasal septum prosthesis was processed and joined together in situ by magnets. Each piece of the septum prosthesis conforms to the remaining medial wall of each nostril and forms the missing half of the nasal septum. The prosthesis not only alleviates symptoms, but also provides structural support to the saddle-shaped nose and improves esthetics.

Prosthetic management of large nasal septal defects

Large nasal septal defect is defined as a defect that exceeds in size a stretched nostril. Large nasal septal defects cannot be closed by hard acrylic resin nasal septal obturators because of access and path-of-insertion problems. However, obturation can be achieved by construction of a nasal stent that fits into one of the nasal cavities. This article describes a procedure used to manage a large nasal septal defect with an intranasal heat-processed acrylic resin stent. The medial wall of the stent indirectly allows for the partition of the two nasal cavities. The stent is rendered patent to allow for comfortable breathing. The impression making and construction of these stents is not difficult. These nasal stents indirectly separate the two nasal cavities and effective obturation of large nasal septal defects is achieved.

Use of nonconductive tubing for nasal stent fabrication

A new and effective technique for making and delivering a nasal stent that can be used for surgical, interim, and definitive stents is presented. The materials used are easily obtainable and inexpensive.

Intranasal prostheses, splints, and stents

Internal defects of the nose result from congenital abnormalities, trauma, tumor excision, and complications of cosmetic or airway enhancement procedures. Since the nose is a prominent feature of the face, and nasal deformities present complicated reconstructive problems, the rehabilitation of this structure assumes great importance. Surgical and/or prosthetic procedures using intranasal prostheses, splints, or stents have been developed to improve both form and function. Intranasal prostheses, splints, and stents during nasal rehabilitation can (1) establish and maintain airway patency, (2) maintain tissue position, (3) reduce tissue contracture after surgery, or (4) support mobile tissue in the construction and retention of facial prostheses. Although techniques for managing common problems have been presented in this article, unique clinical situations will arise. Much of the execution and ultimate success of nasal prosthetics will depend upon the ingenuity of the dentist performing the service.
