Abstract
BACKGROUND HIV/AIDS remains a major public health challenge, in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). In 2020, 16% of people living with HIV did not know their HIV status in SSA. Understanding the geospatial distribution of HIV infection, awareness status, and transmission knowledge is crucial for designing effective prevention and control strategies to end the HIV/AIDS pandemic by 2030. However, to the best of our literature searching the evidence of geospatial analysis and a machine learning algorithm, specifically a decision tree to decide on a Sustainability Development Goal (SDG), and to establish a clear pathway of HIV awareness status and HIV infection rates in each region of SSA is limited. Therefore, this study aims to determine HIV Infection, awareness status, and transmission knowledge among Adults in SSA using a machine learning approach and geospatial analysis. METHODS The study used demographic and health survey data from 2009 to 2019. Machine learning algorithms and geospatial analysis techniques were employed to determine HIV infection, awareness of HIV status, and HIV transmission knowledge. RESULTS The overall prevalence of HIV infection among adults in SSA from 2009 to 2019 is 4.96%. The machine learning algorithm (decision tree) indicates that infected individuals are unaware of their HIV infection, about half of them do not have HIV transmission knowledge, and more of them were found in Southern SSA. The spatial hotspots show that high HIV prevalence, low levels of HIV status awareness, and adequate transmission knowledge are specifically located in the Southern and some Eastern SSA. CONCLUSION The machine learning algorithm (decision tree) revealed that the risk of HIV infection is high among individuals who are unaware of their HIV status and lack knowledge about HIV transmission in Southern and eastern parts of Sub-Saharan Africa. The spatial analysis revealed the high-risk areas of HIV infection with low HIV status awareness and HIV transmission knowledge were located in Southern and some Eastern SSA countries. Therefore public health strategies should focus on educating individuals about the importance of knowing their HIV status, transmission knowledge, and ensuring accessible testing options in these affected regions to address the observed spatial disparities in HIV infection, HIV status awareness, and HIV transmission knowledge to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal of ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa.

Abstract
Infectious agents, notably viruses, can cause or increase the risk of cancer occurrences. These agents often disrupt normal cellular functions, promote uncontrolled proliferation and growth, and trigger chronic inflammation, leading to cancer. Approximately 20% of all cancer cases in humans are associated with an infectious pathogen. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) recognizes seven viruses as direct oncogenic agents, including Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), Kaposi's Sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), human T-cell leukemia virus type-1 (HTLV-1), human papilloma virus (HPV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). Most viruses linked to increased cancer risk are typically transmitted through contact with contaminated body fluids and high-risk behaviors. The risk of infection can be reduced through vaccinations and routine testing, as well as recognizing and addressing risky behaviors and staying informed about public health concerns. Numerous strategies are currently in pre-clinical phases or undergoing clinical trials for targeting cancers driven by viral infections. Herein, we provide an overview of risk factors associated with increased cancer incidence in people living with HIV (PLWH) as well as other chronic viral infections, and contributing factors such as aging, toxicity from ART, coinfections, and comorbidities. Furthermore, we highlight both antibody- and cell-based strategies directed against virus-induced cancers while also emphasizing approaches aimed at discovering cures or achieving complete remission for affected individuals.

Abstract
Nucleoside analogs require three phosphorylation steps catalyzed by cellular kinases to give their triphosphorylated metabolites. Herein, the synthesis of two types of triphosphate prodrugs of different nucleoside analogs is disclosed. Triphosphates comprising: i) a γ-phosphate or γ-phosphonate bearing a bioreversible acyloxybenzyl group and a long alkyl group and ii) γ-dialkyl phosphate/phosphonate modified nucleoside triphosphate analogs. Almost selective conversion of the former TriPPPro-compounds into the corresponding γ-alkylated nucleoside triphosphate derivatives is demonstrated in CEM/0 cell extracts that proved to be stable toward further hydrolysis. The latter γ-dialkylated triphosphate derivatives lead to the slow formation of the corresponding NDPs. Both types of TriPPPro-compounds are highly potent in wild-type CEM/0 cells and more importantly, they exhibit even better activities against HIV-2 replication in CEM/TK- cell cultures. A finding of major importance is that, in primer extension assays, γ-phosphate-modified-NTPs, γ-mono-alkylated-triphosphates, and NDPs prove to be substrates for HIV-RT but not for cellular DNA-polymerases α,γ.

Abstract
PURPOSE We aimed to study the ocular manifestations in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients and the correlation of posterior segment lesions with CD4+ counts. METHODS This hospital-based, cross-sectional study enrolled HIV-positive patients attending the ophthalmology department of a tertiary care hospital in Eastern India. Complete demographic information was obtained for each patient. Comprehensive ophthalmic evaluation was done in each case. RESULTS A total of 184 HIV-positive patients were enrolled in the study. Ocular manifestations were detected in 62 cases. The prevalence of ocular manifestations in the present study was 33.69%. Mean age of patients included in the study was 34.8 ± 10.77 years. Prevalence of ocular manifestations was highest in the age group of 30-39 years (41.93%). Highest prevalence of ocular manifestations was noted in patients with low level of education and poor socioeconomic status. Sexual transmission was the major route of HIV transmission (in 92% of cases). Posterior segment lesions were seen in 69.35% of cases. HIV retinopathy was the most common posterior segment manifestation noted in 25 eyes. Significant positive correlation was noted between severities of posterior segment findings and CD4+ counts, which we found to increase with decrease in CD4+ counts (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Detailed ophthalmic evaluation including fundus examination is must in all cases of HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients as it may help in early diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of sight-threatening complications due to opportunistic infections.

Abstract
Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), one of the deadliest global diseases, is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). To date, there are no known conventional drugs that can cure HIV/AIDS, and this has prompted continuous scientific efforts in the search for novel and potent anti-HIV therapies. In this study, molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) and computational techniques were employed to investigate the inhibitory potential of bioactive compounds from selected South African indigenous plants against HIV-1 subtype C protease (HIVpro). Of the eight compounds (CMG, MA, UA, CA, BA, UAA, OAA and OA) evaluated, only six (CMG (-9.9 kcal/mol), MA (-9.3 kcal/mol), CA (-9.0 kcal/mol), BA (-8.3 kcal/mol), UAA (-8.5 kcal/mol), and OA (-8.6 kcal/mol)) showed favourable activities against HIVpro and binding landscapes like the reference FDA-approved drugs, Lopinavir (LPV) and Darunavir (DRV), with CMG and MA having the highest binding affinities. Using the structural analysis (root-mean-square deviation (RMSD), fluctuation (RMSF), and radius of gyration (RoG) of the bound complexes with HIVpro after 350 ns, structural evidence was observed, indicating that the six compounds are potential lead candidates for inhibiting HIVpro. This finding was further corroborated by the structural analysis of the enzyme-ligand complexe systems, where structural mechanisms of stability, flexibility, and compactness of the study metabolites were established following binding with HIVpro. Furthermore, the ligand interaction plots revealed that the metabolites interacted hydrophobically with the active site amino residues, with identification of other key residues implicated in HIVpro inhibition for drug design. Overall, this is the first computational report on the anti-HIV-1 activities of CMG and MA, with efforts on their in vitro and in vivo evaluations underway. Judging by the binding affinity, the degree of stability, and compactness of the lead metabolites (CMG, MA, CA, BA, OA, and UAA), they could be concomitantly explored with conventional HIVpro inhibitors in enhancing their therapeutic activities against the HIV-1 serotype.

Abstract
Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) infection was discovered over 50 years ago; however, the serious clinical changes associated with FeLV infection still have great importance in the diagnosis, prevention, and clinical management of symptomatic patients. Progressive infection with FeLV leads to a reduction in the patient's life expectancy and quality of life. This report describes the use of an antiretroviral integrase inhibitor, raltegravir, in two cats with natural FeLV infection. Raltegravir was administered orally at a dose of 40 mg/cat every 12 h in both cases. In case one, 13 weeks after starting raltegravir, RNA loads were undetectable, while proviral DNA loads were still detectable. In case two, proviral DNA loads were undetectable after 32 weeks of medication, while RNA loads were undetectable throughout the treatment. No adverse effects or laboratory test abnormalities were detected with the use of raltegravir in either patient. The patients are currently clinically healthy, still receiving the drug, and are under close observation. To our knowledge, this is the first report describing the use of raltegravir in naturally infected FeLV-positive cats and its effects on circulating viral load. Moreover, the patients described here were followed-up for a longer period than those in previously reported cases.

Abstract
We report our recent development of a conceptually new generation of exceptionally potent non-peptidic HIV-1 protease inhibitors that displayed excellent pharmacological and drug-resistance profiles. Our X-ray structural studies of darunavir and other designed inhibitors from our laboratories led us to create a variety of inhibitors incorporating fused ring polycyclic ethers and aromatic heterocycles to promote hydrogen bonding interactions with the backbone atoms of HIV-1 protease as well as van der Waals interactions with residues in the S2 and S2' subsites. We have also incorporated specific functionalities to enhance van der Waals interactions in the S1 and S1' subsites. The combined effects of these structural templates are critical to the inhibitors' exceptional potency and drug-like properties. We highlight here our molecular design strategies to promote backbone hydrogen bonding interactions to combat drug-resistance and specific design of polycyclic ether templates to mimic peptide-like bonds in the HIV-1 protease active site. Our medicinal chemistry and drug development efforts led to the development of new generation inhibitors significantly improved over darunavir and displaying unprecedented antiviral activity against multidrug-resistant HIV-1 variants.

Abstract
'Infodemia' is a portmanteau between 'information' and 'epidemics', referring to wide and rapid accumulation and dissemination of information, misinformation, and disinformation about a given subject, such as a disease. As facts, rumors and fears mix and disperse, the misinfodemic creates loud background noise, preventing the general public from discerning between accurate and false information. We compared and contrasted key elements of the AIDS and COVID-19 misinfodemics, to identify common features, and, based on experience with the AIDS pandemic, recommend actions to control and reverse the SARS-CoV-2 misinfodemic that contributed to erode the trust between the public and scientists and governments and has created barriers to control of COVID-19. As pandemics emerge and evolve, providing robust responses to future misinfodemics must be a priority for society and public health.

Abstract
Background Antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence is fundamental in achieving viral load suppression and consequently attaining positive health outcomes among people living with HIV. However, ART adherence is sub-optimum among adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) thus the high AIDS-related mortality even after World Health Organization (WHO) revised HIV treatment eligibility guidelines in 2010, 2013 and 2016. Consolidated trends of barriers to ART adherence among ALHIV aged 10 to 19 years in sub-Saharan countries post each eligibility guidelines revision to date are unknown. Methods and analysis We will conduct comprehensive search of peer-reviewed and grey literature databases publishing observational studies reporting data adherence and barriers to ART among ALHIV on ART. We will further search the reference lists of included studies and other relevant reviews. We will also do a citation search for included studies in the review. We will search in the following databases PubMed, Cochrane Review, Scopus on Excerpta Medica Database (Embase) and Cumulated Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL). Furthermore WHO, Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) websites, conference proceedings and country reports will be searched to identify relevant literature. Data will be extracted from eligible studies and synthesis will be through categorizing studies by year of study, barriers, and outcomes. Meta-analysis and meta-synthesis will be conducted for quantitative and qualitative data, respectively. Where meta-synthesis is impossible, narrative synthesis will be conducted. We will only include studies conducted between 2010 and 2022 within sub-Saharan Africa countries. Discussion Adherence to ART at a high level is required to achieve adequate viral suppression and improve quality of life in ALHIV. The knowledge of barriers to ART among ALHV may aid in the design of interventions aimed at improving ART adherence. Abstract
In the absence of antiviral therapy, HIV-1 infection progresses to a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations that are the result of an entangled contribution of host, immune and viral factors. The contribution of these factors is not completely established. Several investigations have described the involvement of the immune system in the viral control. In addition, distinct HLA-B alleles, HLA-B27, -B57-58, were associated with infection control. The combination of these elements and antiviral host restriction factors results in different clinical outcomes. The role of the viral proteins in HIV-1 infection has been, however, less investigated. We will review contributions dedicated to the pathogenesis of HIV-1 infection focusing on studies identifying the function of the viral envelope glycoprotein (Env) in the clinical progression because of its essential role in the initial events of the virus life-cycle. Some analysis showed that inefficient viral Envs were dominant in non-progressor individuals. These poorly-functional viral proteins resulted in lower cellular activation, viral replication and minor viral loads. This limited viral antigenic production allows a better immune response and a lower immune exhaustion. Thus, the properties of HIV-1 Env are significant in the clinical outcome of the HIV-1 infection and AIDS pathogenesis.

Abstract
To control the HIV/AIDS epidemics in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in China, Guangxi government launched the 5-year Guangxi AIDS Conquering Project (GACP, Phase I: 2010-2014, Phase II: 2015-2020). In the project, three measures are implemented, such as great improvements of the coverage of HIV/AIDS education, promotion of HIV voluntary counseling and testing, and enhancement of antiretroviral treatment. In this paper, we explore the effects of the three measures of GACP by construction of a Susceptible-Infected-Diagnosed-Treated population compartments model and via evaluation of the basic reproduction number derived from the model. A computational framework is developed for estimating the model parameters based on the HIV surveillance data, with application of the Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo method and Nonlinear Least Squares method. By estimating the new infections and evaluating the basic reproduction number, we find that the implementation of the three measures of GACP has a significant effect on controlling the rise of HIV/AIDS cases and the epidemic trend. Compared with HIV voluntary counseling and testing, strengthening HIV/AIDS education and expanding the coverage of antiretroviral treatment show a greater impact on HIV/AIDS epidemic control, which provides a reference project for other provinces with a similar epidemic situation in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. At the same time, our research fills the current research gap for the evaluation of large-scale AIDS prevention and control projects in developing areas.

Abstract
Background To investigate the role of gray matter (GM) volume in the identification of HIV-positive patients with HIV-associated neurocognitive impairment (HAND) using a machine learning approach from normal healthy controls. Methods Twenty-seven HIV-infected patients and 14 healthy controls were enrolled in our study. Each set of BRAVO images was postprocessed using DPARSF3.1 to coregister all brains on the MNI template, and volume extraction of 90 brain regions was performed using custom-designed code. The machine learning method was performed using PRoNTo2.1.1 toolbox. The differences in brain volume between the HAND and non-HAND groups were analyzed. Results GM volume effectively distinguished HIV-positive patients from healthy subjects with an AUC equals to 0.73. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the established classification were 85.19%, 42.86%, and 70.73%, respectively. GM volume value of the top ten brain regions was related to digit symbols, trail making test, digit span, vocabulary fluency, stroop C time, stroop CW time, CD4, and neuropsychological group. Conclusions A machine learning approach facilitates early diagnosis of HAND in HIV patients by MRI-based GM volume measurement.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To explore the potential use of body mass index (BMI), proteinuria and total lymphocyte count changes in predicting immunological and virological response in individuals with HIV initiated on antiretroviral treatment (ART). DESIGN Prospective cohort study. SETTING Three urban HIV care and treatment centres in Dar es Salaam. PARTICIPANTS Individuals with HIV initiating ART. OUTCOME MEASURES HIV viral load ≥1000 copies/mL (viral non-suppression) at 6 months after ART initiation. RESULTS Of 215 (out of 220 enrolled) participants who returned for evaluation at 6 months, 147 (66.8%) were women. At 6 months of follow-up, 89.4% (76/85) of participants with sustained weight gain were virally suppressed compared with 31.8% (7/22) with sustained loss, p<0.001. In participants who were lymphopaenic at baseline, an increase to normal total lymphocyte counts at 6 months was associated with an increase in CD4 count compared with participants who remained lymphopaenic, 96.2% (50/52) versus 54.8% (17/31), p<0.001. At baseline, 50.0% (110/220) had proteinuria. In participants without proteinuria from baseline to 6 months, 89.8% (79/88) were virally suppressed compared with participants with proteinuria at baseline and/or 3 months, 85.6% (77/90), those with persistent proteinuria, 30.8% (8/26), and proteinuria at 6 months only, 45.5% (5/11), p<0.001. In modified Poisson regression, the independent predictors other than CD4 cell counts for viral non-suppression at 6 months among individuals with HIV initiating on ART were BMI loss >5% from baseline to 6 months (adjusted RR 2.73, 95% CI (1.36 to 5.47)), lymphopaenia at 6 months (adjusted RR=4.54, 95% CI (2.19 to 9.39)) and proteinuria at 6 months (adjusted RR=2.63, 95% CI (1.25 to 5.54)). CONCLUSIONS Change in BMI, total lymphocyte count and presence of proteinuria can monitor and predict ART response and may be particularly helpful in settings when CD4 counts and viral load monitoring are unavailable.

Abstract
Infection by the human immunodeficiency virus still represents a continuous serious concern and a global threat to human health. Due to the appearance of multi-resistant virus strains and the serious adverse side effects of the antiretroviral therapy administered, there is an urgent need for the development of new treatment agents that are more active, less toxic, and with increased tolerability to mutations. Quinoxaline derivatives are a class of heterocyclic compounds with a wide range of organic and remedial applications. In addition, they are known to significantly inhibit HIV reverse transcriptase (RT) and HIV replication in cell cultures. For these reasons, we are investigating the synthesis and computational studies of quinoxaline derivatives with a focus on their effects on the HIV RT enzyme, and we present here the structure of one such molecule, methyl 2-[(2E)-3-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoalin-2-ylidene] acetate, which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction studies. In the crystal, N-H···O and C-H···O hydrogen bonds form ribbons whose mean planes are inclined to (111) by 25.69(8)°. The ribbons are formed into stacks by C-H···π(ring) interactions and π-stacking interactions between carbonyl groups. The Hirshfeld surface map allows us to understand the nature of interactions in the contribution to crystal packing. A density functional theory (DFT) calculation was performed to optimize the geometrical parameters and then they were compared with the solid-state phase. The molecular electrostatic potential map displays reactive sites on the surface, which are responsible for intermolecular interaction in the chemical species. Computational molecular docking, in addition to molecular dynamics simulations and MMGB/PBSA binding energy techniques, was used to assess the affinity of the molecule for the HIV reverse transcriptase enzyme. The new quinoxaline derivative is more powerful in terms of binding affinity and binding conformation stability with the HIV reverse transcriptase enzyme, which suggests the molecule is a good candidate for further biological optimization.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Abstract
The ant plant (Myrmecodia pendans), an epiphyte of Hydnophytinae (Rubiceae), has long been used for traditional medication. This research aimed to examine the effect of ant plant on the increase of CD4 count in PLHIV in Papua Province and to identify the effect of ant plan supplementation on the increase of CD4 in PLHIV. The research used true experimental design with modified randomized control group pretest-posttest design. The pretest was performed by conducting a preliminary count of CD4 in both the intervention and control groups, to which ART has been administered. The intervention group was supplemented with the ant plant on a daily basis, while the control group was given a placebo treatment with tea. Based on the results, it can be concluded that PLHIV given ant plant supplementation may have a higher increase in their CD4 count after receiving an intervention for one month than those who only received ART. Further research is needed to investigate the effect of the ant plant on the viral load in PLHIV.

Abstract
Evolution of science and behavior of new research fields emerging under conditions of crisis are newtopics hardly known in social studies of science and scientometrics. In particular, the ecosystem and dynamics of research fields during crisis are vital aspects for explaining and planning the scientific development, and allocating resources efficaciously toward positive societal impact. This study here endeavors to analyze the evolution and structure of COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) research, a new research field emerged and driven by a global pandemic crisis. The dynamics and structure of this research field are compared to related fields concerning respiratory disorders that are not guided by pandemic crisis, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer, to explain similarities and differences. Results suggest that a crisis-driven research field is characterized by an unparalleled velocity of scientific production equal to about 1.2% daily, based on notes and short papers mainly open access that support scientific advances and discoveries in research arena over a short period of time, such as the development of innovative drugs given by novel vaccines and new antiviral COVID-19 treatments. Findings are generalized in properties that clarify the evolution and structure of new research fields and their research behavior in a period of crisis for guiding decisions of policymakers to support scientific and technological progress in human society in the presence of environmental threats.

Abstract
Background: COVID-19 has several overlapping phases. Treatments to date have focused on the late stage of disease in hospital. Yet, the pandemic is by propagated by the viral phase in out-patients. The current public health strategy relies solely on vaccines to prevent disease.Methods: We searched the major national registries, pubmed.org, and the preprint servers for all ongoing, completed and published trial results.Results: As of 2/15/2021, we found 111 publications reporting findings on 14 classes of agents, and 9 vaccines. There were 62 randomized controlled studies, the rest retrospective observational analyses. Only 21 publications dealt with outpatient care. Remdesivir and high titer convalescent plasma have emergency use authorization for hospitalized patients in the U.S.A. There is also support for glucocorticoid treatment of the COVID-19 respiratory distress syndrome. Monoclonal antibodies are authorized for outpatients, but supply is inadequate to treat all at time of diagnosis. Favipiravir, ivermectin, and interferons are approved in certain countries.Expert Opinion: Vaccines and antibodies are highly antigen specific, and new SARS-Cov-2 variants are appearing. We call on public health authorities to authorize treatments with known low-risk and possible benefit for outpatients in parallel with universal vaccination.

Abstract
CCR5-delta 32 homozygous stem cell transplantation for HIV-infected individuals is being treated as a milestone in the global AIDS epidemic. Since 2008, when the second Berlin patient was cured from HIV after undergoing transplantation from a donor with delta-32 mutation, scientists are aiming for a long-term cure for the wider population. In 2019, a London patient became the second person to be free of HIV and came off the antiretroviral drugs completely. CCR5 gene is now being treated as a viable target for HIV treatment. It can be used in the treatment of HIV either through administration of drugs that bind to CCR5 and stop the receptor from working or through gene therapy to alter the CCR5 gene using CRISPR/Cas9 and prevent protein production. This review article aims to identify the obstacles and the need to overcome them in order to bridge the gap between current research and future potential cures for HIV.

Abstract
Background Many HIV-infected African children gained access to antiretroviral treatment (ART) through expansion of PEPFAR programs since 2004 and introduction of “Test and Treat” WHO guidelines in 2015. As ART access increases and children transition from adolescence to adulthood, treatment failure is inevitable. Viral load (VL) monitoring in Uganda was introduced in 2016 replacing clinical monitoring. However, there’s limited data on the comparative effectiveness of these two strategies among HIV-infected children in resource-limited settings (RLS). Methods HIV-infected Ugandan children aged 1–12 years from HIV-care programs with > 1 year of first-line ART using only immunologic and clinical criteria to monitor response to treatment were screened in 2010. Eligible children were stratified by VL ≤ 400 and > 400 copies/ml randomized to clinical and immunological (control) versus clinical, immunological and VL monitoring to determine treatment failure with follow-up at 12, 24, 36, and 48 weeks. Plasma VL was analyzed retrospectively for controls. Mixed-effects logistic regression models were used to compare the prevalence of viral suppression between study arms and identify factors associated with viral suppression. Results At baseline all children (n = 142) were on NNRTI based ART (75% Nevirapine, 25% efavirenz). One third of ART-experienced children had detectable VL at baseline despite high CD4%. Median age was 6 years (interquartile range [IQR]: 5–9) and 43% were female. Overall, the odds of viral suppression were not different between study arms: (arm by week interaction, p = 0.63), adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 1.07; 95%CI: 0.53, 2.17, p = 0.57) and did not change over time (aOR: 0 vs 24 week: 1.15; 95% CI: 0.91, 1.46, p = 0.24 and 0 vs 48 weeks: 1.26; 95%CI: 0.92, 1.74, p = 0.15). Longer duration of a child’s ART exposure was associated with lower odds of viral suppression (aOR: 0.61; 95% CI: 0.42, 0.87, p < .01). Only 13% (9/71) of children with virologic failure were switched to second-line ART, in spite of access to real-time VL. Conclusion With increasing ART exposure, viral load monitoring is critical for early detection of treatment failure in RLS. Clinicians need to make timely informed decisions to switch failing children to second-line ART. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04489953, 28 Jul 2020. Retrospectively registered. Abstract
The RNA helicase A (RHA) is a member of DExH-box helicases and characterized by two double-stranded RNA binding domains at the N-terminus. RHA unwinds double-stranded RNA in vitro and is involved in RNA metabolisms in the cell. RHA is also hijacked by a variety of RNA viruses to facilitate virus replication. Herein, this review will provide an overview of the role of RHA in the replication of RNA viruses.

Abstract
Quinoxalines, a class of N-heterocyclic compounds, are important biological agents, and a significant amount of research activity has been directed towards this class. They have several prominent pharmacological effects like antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, and antimicrobial. Quinoxaline derivatives have diverse therapeutic uses and have become the crucial component in drugs used to treat cancerous cells, AIDS, plant viruses, schizophrenia, certifying them a great future in medicinal chemistry. Due to the current pandemic situation caused by SARS-COVID 19, it has become essential to synthesize drugs to combat deadly pathogens (bacteria, fungi, viruses) for now and near future. Since quinoxalines is an essential moiety to treat infectious diseases, numerous synthetic routes have been developed by researchers, with a prime focus on green chemistry and cost-effective methods. This review paper highlights the various synthetic routes to prepare quinoxaline and its derivatives, covering the literature for the last two decades. A total of 31 schemes have been explained using the green chemistry approach, cost-effective methods, and quinoxaline derivatives' therapeutic uses.

Abstract
HIV/AIDS drug treatments, one of which is highly active anti-retroviral ther-apy (HAART), often fail by the emergence of drug resistant virus. In this paper we study a quantitative method to evaluate the chance of resistant virus gen-eration. To this end we develop a mathematical description of the possibility of the emergence of resistant virus species against drug treatments, depend-ing on the trajectories of the state variables of HIV infection dynamic model. By simulation studies of mathematical models we apply the proposed analy-sis method to HIV/AIDS drug therapies, improved gradual dosage reduction (iGDR) and structured treatment interruption (STI). Based on the analysis it can be explained the reason why STI therapy often fails. Moreover it is con-cluded that iGDR is desirable particularly by decreasing the threat of resistant virus emergence.

Abstract
In this chapter, the global epidemiological events causing infections that ravaged humanity throughout its existence by bringing hardship to rich and poor nations alike are aggregated and presented. Among these, the largest known epidemics including the recent COVID-19 pandemic will be highlighted along with the analysis of the actual and common reason behind the occurring of all the epidemic scenarios. The epidemiological and nonepidemiological impacts of the most fatal pandemics recorded in history are also discussed. The vulnerable countries’ readiness for coping with epidemics is assessed in terms of different indices. Furthermore, the current and future challenges in fighting epidemiological events are on the frontline and a number of preparative measures and strategies have been suggested.

Abstract
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). HIV infection affects the functions and metabolism of T cells, which may determine the fate of patients; however, the specific pathways activated in different T-cell subtypes (CD4+ and CD8+ T cells) at different stages of infection remain unclear. We obtained transcriptome data of five individuals each with early HIV infection, chronic progressive HIV infection, and no HIV infection. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis was used to evaluate changes in gene expression to determine the antiviral response. An advanced metabolic algorithm was then applied to compare the alterations in metabolic pathways in the two T-cell subtypes at different infection stages. We identified 23 and 20 co-expressed gene modules in CD4+ T and CD8+ T cells, respectively. CD4+ T cells from individuals in the early HIV infection stage were enriched in genes involved in metabolic and infection-related pathways, whereas CD8+ T cells were enriched in genes involved in cell cycle and DNA replication. Three key modules were identified in the network common to the two cell types: NLRP1 modules, RIPK1 modules, and RIPK2 modules. The specific role of NLRP1 in the regulation of HIV infection in the human body remains to be determined. Metabolic functional analysis of the two cells showed that the significantly altered metabolic pathways after HIV infection were valine, leucine, and isoleucine degradation; beta-alanine metabolism; and PPAR signaling pathways. In summary, we found the core gene expression modules and different pathways activated in CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, along with changes in their metabolic pathways during HIV infection progression. These findings can provide an overall resource for establishing biomarkers to facilitate early diagnosis and potential guidance for new targeted therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Numerous studies have focused on lymphoma among patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). However, little is known about the treatment options and survival rate of lymphoma in the Chinese people living with HIV (PLHIV). Our study aimed to investigate the prognosis and compare outcome of dose-adjusted etoposide, prednisone, vincristine, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, and rituximab (DA-EPOCH-R) with standard cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, prednisone and rituximab(R-CHOP) as front line therapy for PLHIV with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) receiving modern combined antiretroviral therapy (cART). METHODS A retrospective analysis evaluating PLHIV with DLBCL was performed in Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center from July 2012 to September 2019. The demographic and clinical data were collected, and overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) analyses of patients receiving R-CHOP or DA-EPOCH-R therapy were performed by Kaplan-Meier analysis. Additionally, a Cox multiple regression model was constructed to identify related factors for OS. RESULTS A total of 54 eligible patients were included in the final analysis with a median follow-up of 14 months (interquartile range [IQR]: 8-29 months). The proportion of high international prognostic index (IPI) patients was much larger in the DA-EPOCH-R group (n = 29) than that in the R-CHOP group (n = 25). The CD4 cell counts and HIV RNA levels were not significantly different between the two groups. The 2-year OS for all patients was 73%. However, OS was not significantly different between the two groups, with a 2-year OS rate of 78% for the DA-EPOCH-R group and 66% for the R-CHOP group. Only an IPI greater than 3 was associated with a decrease in OS, with a hazard ratio of 5.0. The occurrence of grade 3 and 4 adverse events of chemotherapy was not significantly different between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS Outcomes of R-CHOP therapy do not differ from those of DA-EPOCH-R therapy. No HIV-related factors were found to be associated with the OS of PLHIV in the modern cART era.

Abstract
In this paper, we propose and analyse a delayed HIV-1 model with both viral and cellular transmissions and virus waning. We obtain the threshold dynamics of the proposed model, characterized by the basic reproduction number R0 . If R0<1 , the infection-free steady state is globally asymptotically stable; whereas if R0>1 , the system is uniformly persistent. When the delays are positive, we show that the intracellular delays in both viral and cellular infections may lead to stability switches of the infected steady state. Both analytical and numerical results indicate that if the effect of cell-to-cell transmission is ignored, then the risk of HIV-1 infection will be underestimated. Moreover, the viral load of model without virus waning is higher than the one of model with virus waning. These results highlight the important role of two ways of viral transmission and virus waning on HIV-1 infection.

Abstract
Darunavir (DRV) is a potent antiviral drug used for treatment of infections with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Effective and safe treatment with DRV requires its therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) in patient's plasma during therapy. To support TDM of DRV, a specific antibody with high affinity is required in order to develop a sensitive immunoassay for the accurate determination of DRV in plasma. In this study, two new and different immunogens were prepared and characterized. These immunogens were the DRV conjugates with keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) protein. The first immunogen (DRV-KLH) was prepared by zero-length direct linking of DRV via its aromatic amino group with the tyrosine amino acid residues of KLH by diazotization/coupling reaction. The second immunogen (G-DRV-KLH) was prepared by conjugation of the N-glutaryl derivative of DRV (G-DRV) with KLH. The 5-carbon atoms-spacing G-DRV hapten was synthesized by reaction of DRV via its aromatic amino group with glutaric anhydride. The reaction was monitored by HPLC and the chemical structure of G-DRV was confirmed by mass, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectroscopic techniques. The hapten (G-DRV) was linked to the KLH protein by water-soluble 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) coupling procedure. The pertinence of the coupling reactions of haptens to protein was confirmed, and the immunogens were characterized by ultraviolet (UV) spectrophotometry. Both DRV-KLH and G-DRV-KLH were used for the immunization of animals and the animal's antiserum that showed the highest affinity was selected. The collected antiserum (polyclonal antibody) had very high affinity to DRV (IC50 value = 0.2 ng mL-1; defining IC50 as the DRV concentration that can inhibit antibody binding by 50% of its maximum binding) and high specificity to DRV among other drugs used in the combination therapy with DRV. Cumulative results from direct and competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using this polyclonal antibody proved that the immunogens were highly antigenic and elicited a specific polyclonal antibody. The produced polyclonal antibody is valuable for the development of highly sensitive and selective immunoassays for TDM of DRV.

Abstract
Antiretroviral therapy has revolutionized the treatment of AIDS, turning a deadly disease into a manageable chronic condition. Life-long treatment is required because existing drugs do not eradicate HIV-infected cells. The emergence of drug-resistant viral strains and uncertain vaccine prospects highlight the pressing need for new therapeutic approaches with the potential to clear the virus. The HIV-1 accessory protein Nef is essential for viral pathogenesis, making it a promising target for antiretroviral drug discovery. Nef enhances viral replication and promotes immune escape of HIV-infected cells but lacks intrinsic enzymatic activity. Instead, Nef works through diverse interactions with host cell proteins primarily related to kinase signaling pathways and endosomal trafficking. This review emphasizes the structure, function, and biological relevance of Nef interactions with host cell protein-tyrosine kinases in the broader context of Nef functions related to enhancement of the viral life cycle and immune escape. Drug discovery targeting Nef-mediated kinase activation has allowed identification of promising inhibitors of multiple Nef functions. Pharmacological inhibitors of Nef-induced MHC-I down-regulation restore the adaptive immune response to HIV-infected cells in vitro and have the potential to enhance immune recognition of latent viral reservoirs as part of a strategy for HIV clearance.

Abstract
Abstract
The world is facing, while writing this review, a global pandemic due to one of the types of the coronaviruses (i.e., COVID-19), which is a new virus. Among the most important reasons for the transmission of infection between humans is the presence of this virus active on the surfaces and materials. Here, we addressed important questions such as do coronaviruses remain active on the inanimate surfaces? Do the types of inanimate surfaces affect the activity of coronaviruses? What are the most suitable ingredients that used to inactivate viruses? This review article addressed many of the works that were done in the previous periods on the survival of many viruses from the coronaviruses family on various surfaces such as steel, glass, plastic, Teflon, ceramic tiles, silicon rubber and stainless steel copper alloys, Al surface, sterile sponges, surgical gloves and sterile latex. The impacts of environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity were presented and discussed. The most important active ingredients that can deactivate viruses on the surfaces were reported here. We hope that these active ingredients will have the same effect on COVID-19.

Accurate determination
of the binding affinity of the ligand to
the receptor remains a difficult problem in computer-aided drug design.
Here, we study and compare the efficiency of Jarzynski’s equality
(JE) combined with steered molecular dynamics and the linear interaction
energy (LIE) method by assessing the binding affinity of 23 small
compounds to six receptors, including β-lactamase, thrombin,
factor Xa, HIV-1 protease (HIV), myeloid cell leukemia-1, and cyclin-dependent
kinase 2 proteins. It was shown that Jarzynski’s nonequilibrium
binding free energy ΔGneqJar correlates with the available
experimental data with the correlation levels R =
0.89, 0.86, 0.83, 0.80, 0.83, and 0.81 for six data sets, while for
the binding free energy ΔGLIE obtained
by the LIE method, we have R = 0.73, 0.80, 0.42,
0.23, 0.85, and 0.01. Therefore, JE is recommended to be used for
ranking binding affinities as it provides accurate and robust results.
In contrast, LIE is not as reliable as JE, and it should be used with
caution, especially when it comes to new systems.

Abstract
Artocarpus heterophyllus (jack tree) is an evergreen fruit tree belonging to the genus Artocarpus (Moraceae), which is widely distributed in subtropical and tropical regions of Asia. Its fruits (jackfruit), well-known as the world's largest tree-borne fruit, are being consumed in our daily diets as a very popular tropical fruit throughout the world and have been confirmed to hold various health benefits. In this study, five new prenylated chromones, artocarheterones A-E (1-5), as well as seven known prenylated chromones (6-12) were purified and isolated from the ripe fruits of A. heterophyllus (jackfruit). Their chemical structures were determined through comprehensive spectroscopic methods. This is the first report on prenylated chromones isolated from A. heterophyllus. The anti-HIV-1 effects of all isolated chromones were assessed in vitro. As a result, prenylated chromones (1-12) showed remarkable anti-HIV-1 effects with EC50 values ranging from 0.09 to 9.72 μM. These research results indicate that the isolation and characterization of these prenylated chromones with remarkable anti-HIV-1 activities from the ripe fruits of A. heterophyllus could be significant to the discovery and development of new anti-HIV-1 drugs.

Abstract
Most mortality studies usually attribute death to single disease, while various other diseases could also act in the same individual or a population at large. Few works have been done by considering HIV, Tuberculosis (TB), and Hepatitis B (HB) as jointly acting in a population in spite of their high rate of infections in Ghana. This study applied competing risk methods on these three diseases by assuming they were the major risks in the study population. Among all opportunistic infections that could also act within HIV-infected individuals, TB has been asserted to be the most predominant. Other studies have also shown cases of HIV and Hepatitis B coinfections. The validity of these comorbidity assertions was statistically determined by exploring the conditional dependencies existing among HIV, TB, and HB through Bayesian networks or directed graphical model. Through Classification tree, sex and age group of individuals were found as significant demographic predictors that influence the prevalence of HIV and TB. Females were more likely to contract HIV, whereas males were prone to contracting TB.

Abstract
Humans and animals are infected by multiple endogenous and exogenous viruses but few agents cause overt tissue damage. We review the circumstances which favor overt disease expression. These can include intrinsic virulence of the agent, new agents acquired from heterologous species, the circumstances of infection such as dose and route, current infection with other agents which includes the composition of the microbiome at mucosal and other sites, past history of exposure to other infections as well as the immune status of the host. We also briefly discuss promising therapeutic strategies that can expand immune response patterns that minimize tissue damaging responses to viral infections.

Abstract
Given recent emphasis on patient engagement in the choice and development of health measures to ensure their relevance, we examined the involvement of people living with HIV (PLHIV) in the creation of health measurement instruments that are HIV-specific or inclusive. A mixed studies review was conducted describing: 1) the sampling, recruitment and characteristics of involved PLHIV; 2) the methods and extent of their involvement; and 3) study author characterizations of this involvement. Five databases were searched in November 2015. Content and thematic analyses and a patient engagement framework guided the synthesis. Forty-one studies describing the development of thirty-nine instruments were reviewed. For many instruments, there was no reporting of the sampling method used for PLHIV involvement (87%), the recruitment setting (62%), the number of PLHIV involved (44%) or their characteristics (38%). Focus groups (38%) and interviews (36%) were the most common involvement methods. Involvement typically occurred at the patient engagement level of consultation (79%). Authors primarily characterized involvement as "contributing to instrument development" and, less frequently, as "a collaboration," "integral to instrument development" or "challenging." Patient engagement frameworks and standards for the content validation of patient-reported measures offer resources for systematic reporting, contextualizing involvement, diversifying approaches, and documenting their potentialities.

Abstract
A variety of fungi, plants, and their different tissues are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to improve health, and some of them are recommended for dietary therapy. Many of these plants and fungi contain antifungal proteins and peptides which suppress spore germination and hyphal growth in phytopathogenic fungi. The aim of this article is to review antifungal proteins produced by medicinal plants and fungi used in Chinese medicine which also possess anticancer and human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) enzyme inhibitory activities.

Abstract
HIV-indeterminate Western blotting (WB) results are typically obtained in WB confirmatory assays, and the number of indeterminate samples may increase with the detection of HIV infections, which will present considerable challenges for the management of HIV/AIDS. Nucleic acid detection has been used as a laboratory test for screening suspected or indeterminate samples. However, the effectiveness of these assays for the differential diagnosis of HIV-indeterminate WB samples remained undetermined. In this study, 210 subjects with HIV-indeterminate WB results were detected from 6360 positive HIV screening samples between 2015 and 2016 in southeastern China, in which HIV-indeterminate WB results accounted for 3.30%. The highest proportion of indeterminate results was observed in pregnant and lying-in women receiving physical examinations (16.67%), followed by that in voluntary blood donors (8.82%). The most common WB band patterns were p24, gp160 and p24, and gp160. The follow-up study revealed that the highest negative and positive conversion rates of HIV antibodies were in samples with a single p24 band (80.28%), and with gp160 and p24 bands (86.21%), respectively. Among the Env, Gag, and Pol antibodies, samples with a Gag band showed the highest negative conversion rate (81.25%), whereas the highest positive conversion rate was observed in samples with an Env band (56.76%). In addition, quantitative and qualitative HIV nucleic acid testing exhibited the highest sensitivity (96.3%) and specificity (97.85%), respectively. Our results indicate a lower proportion of HIV indeterminate WB results in southeastern China compared to previous reports, and the follow-up re-examination of patients with HIV indeterminate results should be performed. Nucleic acid testing facilitates the identification of HIV infections.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this work was to study the spectrum of epithelial abnormalities on Pap smears of HIV-positive women categorized as per the Bethesda System of Reporting Cervical Cytology, to correlate them with CD4 lymphocyte counts, and to compare them with the spectrum of abnormalities seen in a HIV-negative control group. Study Design and Methodology: The present study was a 6-year retrospective study conducted in the Department of Pathology at Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, which included 150 Pap smears from HIV-positive and HIV-negative women, respectively. The Pap-stained slides of the cases were retrieved and studied. The data collected were tabulated and analyzed. A statistical study was performed using SPSS software. The χ2 test was used to analyze the data and a p value < 0.05 was considered to be significant. RESULTS Pap smear abnormalities were twice as high in HIV-infected women (12%) as compared with HIV-negative women (6%; p = 0.006, RR = 2). Negative for intraepithelial lesion/malignancy was the most common finding (88%), which was further subdivided into inflammatory, atrophic smear, non-specific, candidiasis, and bacterial vaginitis groups. The percentage of epithelial abnormalities was 12%, including: atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance, 5.55%; atypical squamous cells, cannot exclude HSIL, 16.66%; low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion, 5.55%; high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL), 61.11%, and squamous cell carcinoma, 11.11%. The highest incidence of intraepithelial lesions in HIV-positive females was in the age group of 34-49 years. CD4 cell counts fell in the range of 200-500 cells/mm3 in most of the HIV-positive patients (68.75%), but was not found to be statistically significant. CONCLUSION Routine Pap smear examination is advocated in women with HIV as the prevalence of epithelial cell abnormalities was found to be 12%, which was twice as high as compared to the HIV-negative control group. Although there was no correlation of epithelial cell abnormalities with CD4 counts, a higher rate of the cases with epithelial abnormalities were observed to have CD4 cell counts of 200-500 cells/mm3.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to develop an accurate, rapid, simple, and label-free assay technology that enables point-of-care diagnosis of AIDS. For this, 3-dimensional (3D) probes to sensitively detect anti-HIV antibodies were designed and synthesized by genetically presenting a HIV antigen (gp41) on the surface of engineered human ferritin nanoparticles. The 3D probes also present multi-copies of the hexa-histidine peptide (H6) on their surface to chemisorb gold ions (Au3+), which is essential for the generation and self-enhancement of assay signals. The developed new assay technology (named "one-step-immunoassay") quickly produced clear optical signals through a simple and convenient one-step procedure. The diagnostic performance of the one-step-immunoassay was compared with that of the conventional lateral flow assay (LFA) using 30 AIDS patient and 20 healthy sera. The sensitivity of LFA was only 63% when a single antigen (gp41) was used but enhanced to 90% when three different antigens (gp41, p24, and gp120) were used together as the assay probes. In contrast, the one-step-immunoassay using only gp41 produced strong optical signals within 15 min without causing any false negative/positive signals, showing 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity and holding promising potential for clinical point-of-care diagnosis of AIDS.

Abstract
Objectives Skin disorders are the most common health problems seen among HIV positive patients. It presents with a variety of manifestations which can cause significant morbidity. This study was aimed to assess the prevalence of common skin problems among children living with HIV/AIDS at Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Hawassa, Ethiopia, 2017/2018. Hospital based cross-sectional study was conducted among 125 children living with HIV/AIDS who were recruited through simple random sampling techniques from February to April 2017. Pre-tested, structured questionnaires were used to collect the data. Result Among a total of 125 study participants, 72 (57.6%) of the children were males and 97 (77.6%) were in the age range of 10–14 years. 90 (72%) of participants had different kinds of skin problems. Among those who had one kind of common skin infection, 53 (42.4%) were males. Viral skin infections that accounts 48 (53.3%), were the leading cause of skin infections followed by 43 (47.8%), 33(36.7%) and 22 (24.7%) fungal infections, inflammatory and bacterial skin infections respectively. Among all children who were taking ART, only 2.4% of the children had skin related side effects. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare outcomes with single tablet regimens (STR) versus multi-tablet regimens (MTR) for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) treatment using published data. DESIGN Systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis of literature on approved and investigational HIV regimens. METHODS The research followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Single or un-blinded studies reporting a direct comparison between STR and MTR were eligible for the meta-analysis. Double-blinded studies were excluded due to lack of difference in pill burden between cohorts. The key outcomes of interest included: adherence rates/proportion meeting target, efficacy, safety/tolerability, non-clinical and economic outcomes. RESULTS After screening 63 full-text articles and posters, 14 studies were eligible for the meta-analysis. The analysis showed that patients taking STR had improved outcomes over those taking MTR. Patients were significantly more adherent regardless of daily dosing frequency (odds ratio [OR]: 1.96, p < 0.001) and were more likely to achieve virological suppression (relative risk [RR]: 1.05, p = 0.002). There was a trend toward a lower discontinuation risk in the STR cohort, together with reported higher therapy satisfaction, better symptom control, improved health status, reduced healthcare resource utilization and demonstrated cost-effectiveness compared to MTR. There were no differences in CD4 cell count increase (at 48 weeks) or safety outcomes. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study confirm previously reported preliminary findings of the advantages of STR over MTR for HIV treatment in adherence, therapy continuation, viral suppression, tolerability, quality of life improvement, cost-effectiveness and healthcare resource utilization.

Abstract
The risk of developing malignancy is higher in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection than in non-HIV-infected patients. Several factors including immunosuppression, viral coinfection, and high-risk lifestyle choices lead to higher rates of cancer in the HIV-infected population. A subset of HIV-related malignancies are considered to be acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-defining malignancies, as their presence confirms the diagnosis of AIDS in an HIV-infected patient. The introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has led to a significant drop in the rate of AIDS-defining malignancies, including Kaposi sarcoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and invasive cervical carcinoma. However, non-AIDS-defining malignancies (eg, Hodgkin lymphoma, lung cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, and head and neck cancers) now account for an increasing number of cancer cases diagnosed in HIV-infected patients. Although the number has decreased, AIDS-defining malignancies account for 15%-19% of all deaths in HIV-infected patients in the post-HAART era. Most HIV-related malignancies in HIV-infected patients manifest at an earlier age with a more aggressive course than that of non-HIV-related malignancies. Understanding common HIV-related malignancies and their specific imaging features is crucial for making an accurate and early diagnosis, which impacts management. Owing to the weakened immune system of HIV-infected patients, other entities such as various infections, particularly opportunistic infections, are prevalent in these patients. These processes can have confounding clinical and imaging manifestations that mimic malignancy. This article reviews the most common AIDS-defining and non-AIDS-defining malignancies, the role of imaging in their diagnosis, and the imaging mimics of malignancies in HIV-infected patients. ©RSNA, 2018.

Abstract
Viral diseases represent a major global problem in human health, with high morbidity and mortality. Despite recent progress in antiviral treatments, several viral diseases are still not controlled and millions suffer from them every year. It has recently emerged that purinergic signaling participates in viral infection and replication. Furthermore, stimulation of purinergic receptors in infected cells also induces inflammatory and antiviral responses, thus contributing to the host antiviral defense. Here we review the multiple roles played by the purinergic signaling network in cell-virus interactions that can lead either to viral maintenance in the cells or, by contrast, to stronger antiviral responses, and discuss potential future applications of purinergic signaling modulation for the treatment of viral diseases.
