Density functional studies of small silicon clusters adsorbed on graphene

The structural and electronic properties of small Si_n clusters (n = 1–6, 10) adsorbed on graphene are studied by use of density functional theory within periodic boundary conditions.

STABILITIES AND FRAGMENTATION BEHAVIORS OF Agn CLUSTERS (n = 2–34)

A global search on the lowest-energy structures of the medium-sized silver clusters Ag n(n = 21–34) was performed by using a genetic algorithm (GA) coupled with a tight-binding (TB) method. Structures, binding energies per atom, second differences in energies, the energy gaps between the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO–LUMO), and fragmentation behaviors of Ag n(n = 21–34) are investigated by using DFT method. The calculated results show that the neutral silver clusters prefer to decay by evaporation of a monomer except a small sized silver cluster ( Ag 4), which favors a dimmer evaporation. For the collision induced dissociation of cationic silver clusters, decaying a silver atom is found to be the dominant fragmentation channel. But for some small sized cationic silver clusters, a neutral dimmer evaporation is found to be energetically favorable. Our calculated results are consistent with previous studies.

An improved time-of-flight method for cluster deposition and ion-scattering experiments

A molecular beam apparatus has been developed for deposition and scattering experiments of size-selected clusters. The new setup combines a bimetallic laser ablation cluster source with a collinear time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Mass selection is achieved with a pulsed electrostatic mirror. A significantly improved transmission in combination with a reduction of the kinetic energy distribution of the mass selected clusters has been obtained. Without further modification of the apparatus, surface-induced dissociation of mass selected tin clusters has been investigated, demonstrating the possibility to combine cluster beam deposition and scattering experiments.

Dynamics of Clusters Initiated by Photon and Surface Impact

Clusters of atoms/molecules show dynamics characteristic of the method of excitation. Two contrasted processes are discussed: (1) electronic excitation via single-photon absorption and (2) impulsive excitation of nuclear motions by surface impact. Process 1 is exemplified by photodissociation dynamics of size-selected metal cluster ions. The electronic energy is converted most likely to vibrational energy of internal modes; dissociation follows via statistical mechanism to produce energetically favored fragments. Exceptionally, a silver cluster ion, Ag4(+), is shown to undergo nonstatistical dissociation along the potential-energy surface of the excited state. Energy partitioning to translational and vibrational modes of fragments is analyzed as well as bond dissociation energies. Furthermore, the spectrum of the photodissociation yield provides electronic and geometrical structures of a cluster with the aid of ab initio calculations; manganese, Mn(N)(+), and chromium, Cr(N)(+), cluster ions are discussed, where the importance of magnetic interactions is manifested. On the other hand, momentum transfer upon surface impact plays a role in process 2. An impulsive mechanical force triggers extraordinary chemical processes distinct from those initiated by atomic collision as well as photoexcitation. Experiments on aluminum, Al(N)(-), silicon, SiN(-), and solvated, I(2)(-)(CO2)(N), cluster anions provide evidence for reactions proceeding under extremely high temperatures, such as pickup of surface atoms, annealing of products, and mechanical splitting of chemical bonds. In addition, a model experiment to visualize and time-resolve the cluster impact process is performed by using a micrometer-sized liquid droplet. Multiphoton absorption initiates superheating of the droplet surface followed by a shock wave and disintegration into a number of small fragments (shattering). These studies further reveal how the nature of chemical bonds influences the dynamics of clusters.

Reactive collisions of hyperthermal energy molecular ions with solid surfaces

Recent experimental advances have uncovered many of the diverse reaction pathways following an energetic collision between a molecular ion and a solid surface. Hyperthermal translational energies (5-500 eV) are sufficient to activate a number of chemical transformations in the near-surface region, including charge transfer, dissociation, abstraction, and deposition. State-of-the-art scattering studies probe the consumption and disposal of energy and the effects of approach geometry and surface electronic structure on the operative reaction mechanisms. These fundamental investigations provide insight relevant to the fabrication of microelectronics devices, the interaction of space vehicles with the earth's atmosphere, and the development of analytical techniques in mass spectrometry.
