Abstract
A low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and ab initio calculations were used to study the electric field effect on the vibration of single CO molecules in an STM junction at 13 K. The vibrational energy of CO molecules adsorbed on silver atoms, measured by STM-based inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy, depends on the direction of the electric field applied between the STM tip and the silver species. This characteristic can be explained by the charge separation model. The electric field modifies the binding characteristics of CO on silver as a result of a change in the charged states of the species, which leads to an increase (or a decrease) of the energies of the hindered rotation and the CO stretch on silver.

Abstract
We report on the aqueous hydration of benzene and hexafluorobenzene, as obtained by carrying out extensive (>100 ps) first principles molecular dynamics simulations. Our results show that benzene and hexafluorobenzene do not behave as ordinary hydrophobic solutes, but rather present two distinct regions, one equatorial and the other axial, that exhibit different solvation properties. While in both cases the equatorial regions behave as typical hydrophobic solutes, the solvation properties of the axial regions depend strongly on the nature of the pi-water interaction. In particular, pi-hydrogen and pi-lone pair interactions are found to dominate in benzene and hexafluorobenzene, respectively, which leads to substantially different orientations of water near the two solutes. We present atomic and electronic structure results (in terms of Maximally Localized Wannier Functions) providing a microscopic description of benzene- and hexafluorobenzene-water interfaces, as well as a comparative study of the two solutes. Our results point at the importance of an accurate description of interfacial water to characterize hydration properties of apolar molecules, as these are strongly influenced by subtle charge rearrangements and dipole moment redistributions in interfacial regions.

Abstract
The vibrational spectra of methionine and histidine-containing palladium (II) and platinum (II) complexes, cis-M(Met)X2 and cis-M(His)X2 (M = Pd and Pt; X = F, Cl, Br and I; Met = methionine, His = histidine), have been systematically investigated by ab initio Restricted Hartree-Fock (RHF) and density functional B3LYP methods with LanL2DZ and SDD basis sets. The geometries of cis-Pd(Met)Cl2, cis-Pt(Met)Cl2, cis-Pd(His)Cl2 and cis-Pt(His)I2 optimized and vibrational frequencies and IR intensities of cis-M(Met)Cl2 and cis-M(His)Cl2 (M = Pd and Pt) calculated are evaluated via comparison with the experimental values. The vibrational frequencies calculated show that the methods, rather than basis sets, affect the accuracy of the calculation. The best results that can reproduce the experimental ones are obtained at B3LYP level without any scale factor used. The vibrational frequencies of cis-M(Met)X2 and cis-M(His)X2 (M = Pd and Pt; X = F, Br and I) that have not yet been experimentally reported are predicted.

Abstract
The equilibrium structures and binding energies of the benzene complexes of p-benzoquinones (PBQ) and its negatively charged anionic species (PBQ- and PBQ2-) have been investigated theoretically using second-order Møller-Plesset calculations. While neutral p-benzoquinone-benzene clusters (PBQ-Bz) prefer to have a parallel displaced geometry (P-c), CH...pi interactions (T-shaped geometries) prevail in the di-anionic PBQ-benzene (PBQ2- -Bz) complexes (T-e2-). Studies on dianionic p-benzoquinone-benzene clusters showed that two nonbonded intermolecular interactions compete in the most stable conformation. One is H-bonding interaction (C-H...O type) between carbonyl oxygen of p-benzoquinone and one of the hydrogen atoms of benzene, and the other is a pi-H interaction between pi-electron cloud of PBQ2- and another hydrogen atom of benzene. Blueshifted H-bonds were observed in T-shaped clusters. The changes in the geometrical preference of PBQ-Bz complex upon addition of electrons would be useful in designing optimized molecular mechanical devices based on the edge-to-face and face-to-face aromatic interactions.

Abstract
The vibrational spectra of Group IIB elements halides MX2 and their dimers M2X4 (M=Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II); X=F, Cl, Br and I) have been systematically investigated by ab initio RHF and B3LYP methods with LanL2MB, LanL2DZ and SDD basis sets. The optimized geometries, calculated vibrational frequencies are evaluated via comparison with the experimental data. The vibrational frequencies, calculated by these methods with different basis sets, are compared to each other too. The best results can be obtained by RHF/SDD method, with this method, the deviations for MX2 and Hg2X4 are <7%. Some vibrational frequencies of M2X4 that have not been experimentally reported are also predicted.

Abstract
The vibrational spectra of mixed cyanide-halide complexes, M(CN)4X 2 2- and M(CN)5X2- (M=Pt and Pd; X=F, Cl, Br and I), have been systematically investigated by ab initio RHF, B3LYP and MP2 methods with LanL2DZ and SDD basis sets. The calculated vibrational frequencies of platinum complexes are evaluated via comparison with the experimental values. In the infrared frequency region, the C--N stretching vibrational frequencies calculated at B3LYP level with two basis sets are in good agreement with the observed values with deviations, -16-4 cm(-1) for Pt(CN)4X 2 2- and -18 to -2 cm(-1) for Pt(CN)5X2-. However, in far-infrared region, the results obtained at RHF level are better than those calculated at B3LYP and MP2 levels. For RHF/SDD method, the deviations for Ptz.sbnd;X and Ptz.sbnd;C stretching vibrational frequencies are -14-1 and -12 to -2 cm(-1) in the complex Pt(CN)4X2 2-, -19 to -11 and -15-14 cm(-1) in the Pt(CN)5X2- complex, respectively. The vibrational frequencies of palladium(IV) and some platinum(IV) complexes that have not been experimentally reported are predicted.
