Abstract
We present an experimental study of the dynamics following the photoexcitation and subsequent photoionization of single Cs atoms on the surface of helium nanodroplets. The dynamics of excited Cs atom desorption and readsorption as well as CsHe exciplex formation are measured by using femtosecond pump-probe velocity map imaging spectroscopy and ion time-of-flight spectrometry. The time scales for the desorption of excited Cs atoms off helium nanodroplets as well as the time scales for CsHe exciplex formation are experimentally determined for the 6p states of Cs. For the 6p 2Π1/2 state, our results confirm that the excited Cs atoms only desorb from the nanodroplet when the excitation wavenumber is blue-shifted from the 6p 2Π1/2 ← 6s 2Σ1/2 resonance. Our results suggest that the dynamics following excitation to the 6p 2Π3/2 state can be described by an evaporation-like desorption mechanism, whereas the dynamics arising from excitation to the 6p 2Σ1/2 state is indicative for a more impulsive desorption process. Furthermore, our results suggest a helium-induced spin-orbit relaxation from the 6p 2Σ1/2 state to the 6p 2Π1/2 state. Our findings largely agree with the results of time-dependent 4He density functional theory (DFT) simulations published earlier [Eur. Phys. J. D 2019, 73, 94].

Abstract
The 0.4 K internal temperature of superfluid helium nanodroplets is believed to guarantee a corresponding ground-state population of dopant atoms and molecules inside this cryogenic matrix. We have recorded 6s ← 5p excitation spectra of indium atoms in helium droplets and found two absorption bands separated by about 2000 cm-1, a value close to the spin-orbit (SO) splitting of the In 2P ground state. The intensities of the bands agree with a thermal population of the 2P1/2 and 2P3/2 states at 870 K, the temperature of the In pick-up cell. Applying femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy, we found the same dynamical response of the helium solvation shell after the photoexcitation of the two bands. He-density functional theory simulations of the excitation spectra are in agreement with the bimodal structure. Our findings show that the population of SO levels of hot dopants is conserved after pick-up inside the superfluid droplet. Implications for the interpretation of experiments on molecular aggregates are discussed.

Abstract
Electronic excitations of an electron bound to an alkali metal ion inside a droplet of superfluid 4He are computed via a combination of helium density functional theory and the numerical integration of the Schrödinger equation for a single electron in a modified, He density dependent atomic pseudopotential. The application of a spectral method to the radial part of the valence electron wavefunction allows the computation of highly excited Rydberg states. For low principal quantum numbers, the energy required to push the electron outward is larger than the solvation energy of the ion. However, for higher principal quantum numbers the situation is reversed, which suggests the stability of a system where the ion sits inside the droplet while the valence electron orbits the nanodroplet.

Abstract
The real-time dynamics of excited alkali metal atoms (Rb) attached to quantum fluid He nanodroplets is investigated using femtosecond imaging spectroscopy and time-dependent density functional theory. We disentangle the competing dynamics of desorption of excited Rb atoms off the He droplet surface and solvation inside the droplet interior as the Rb atom is ionized. For Rb excited to the 5p and 6p states, desorption occurs on starkly differing time scales (∼100 versus ∼1 ps, respectively). The comparison between theory and experiment indicates that desorption proceeds either impulsively (6p) or in a transition regime between impulsive dissociation and complex desorption (5p).

Abstract
The desorption dynamics of rubidium dimers (Rb2) off the surface of helium nanodroplets induced by laser excitation is studied by employing both nanosecond and femtosecond ion imaging spectroscopy. Similarly to alkali metal atoms, we find that the Rb2 desorption process resembles the dissociation of a diatomic molecule. However, both angular and energy distributions of detected Rb2+ ions appear to be most crucially determined by the Rb2 intramolecular degrees of freedom rather than by those of the Rb2HeN complex. The pump-probe dynamics of Rb2+ is found to be slower than that of Rb+, pointing at a weaker effective guest-host repulsion for excited molecules than for single atoms.

Abstract
Phase-modulated wave packet interferometry is combined with mass-resolved photoion detection to investigate rubidium atoms attached to helium nanodroplets in a molecular beam experiment. The spectra of atomic Rb electronic states show a vastly enhanced sensitivity and spectral resolution when compared to conventional pump-probe wave packet interferometry. Furthermore, the formation of Rb*He exciplex molecules is probed and for the first time a fully resolved vibrational spectrum for transitions between the lowest excited 5Π3/2 and the high-lying electronic states 2(2)Π, 4(2)Δ, 6(2)Σ is obtained and compared to theory. The feasibility of applying coherent multidimensional spectroscopy to dilute cold gas phase samples is demonstrated in these experiments.

Abstract
We present a thorough theoretical and experimental study of the electronic structure of RbCa. The mixed alkali-alkaline earth molecule RbCa was formed on superfluid helium nanodroplets. Excited states of the molecule in the range of 13 000-23 000 cm-1 were recorded by resonance enhanced multi-photon ionization time-of-flight spectroscopy. The experiment is accompanied by high level ab initio calculations of ground and excited state properties, utilizing a multireference configuration interaction method based on multiconfigurational self consistent field calculations. With this approach the potential energy curves and permanent electric dipole moments of 24 electronic states were calculated. In addition we computed the transition dipole moments for transitions from the ground into excited states. The combination of experiment and theory allowed the assignment of features in the recorded spectrum to the excited [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] states, where the experiment allowed to benchmark the calculation. This is the first experimental work giving insight into the previously unknown RbCa molecule, which offers great prospects in ultracold molecular physics due to its magnetic and electronic dipole moment in the [Formula: see text] ground state.

Abstract
![]()
We investigate the photoinduced relaxation
dynamics of Cr atoms
embedded into superfluid helium nanodroplets. One- and two-color resonant
two-photon ionization (1CR2PI and 2CR2PI, respectively) are applied
to study the two strong ground state transitions z7P2,3,4° ←
a7S3 and y7P2,3,4° ← a7S3. Upon photoexcitation, Cr* atoms are ejected from the
droplet in various excited states, as well as paired with helium atoms
as Cr*–Hen exciplexes. For the
y7P2,3,4° intermediate state, comparison of the two methods reveals
that energetically lower states than previously identified are also
populated. With 1CR2PI we find that the population of ejected z5P3° states is reduced for increasing droplet size, indicating that population
is transferred preferentially to lower states during longer interaction
with the droplet. In the 2CR2PI spectra we find evidence for generation
of bare Cr atoms in their septet ground state (a7S3) and metastable quintet state (a5S2), which we attribute to a photoinduced fast excitation–relaxation
cycle mediated by the droplet. A fraction of Cr atoms in these ground
and metastable states is attached to helium atoms, as indicated by
blue wings next to bare atom spectral lines. These relaxation channels
provide new insight into the interaction of excited transition metal
atoms with helium nanodroplets.

Abstract
The structure and energetics of exciplexes M*((2)L)He(n) (M = Cu, Ag and Au; L = P and D) in their vibrational ground state are studied by employing diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC). Interaction potentials between the excited coinage metals and He atoms are built using the Diatomics-in-Molecule (DIM) approach and ab initio potential curves for the M((2)L)-He dimers. Extending our previous work [Cargnoni et al., J. Phys. Chem. A, 2011, 115, 7141], we computed the dimer potential for Au in the (2)P and (2)D states, as well for Cu and Ag in the (2)D state, employing basis set superposition error-corrected Configuration Interaction calculations. We found that the (2)Π potential correlating with the (2)P state of Au is substantially less binding than for Ag and Cu, a trend well supported by the M(+) ionic radiuses. Conversely, the interaction potentials between a (n - 1)d(9)ns(2 2)D metal and He present a very weak dependency on M itself or the projection of the angular momentum along the dimer axis. This is due to the screening exerted by the ns(2) electrons on the hole in the (n - 1)d shell. Including the spin-orbit coupling perturbatively in the DIM energy matrix has a major effect on the lowest potential energy surface of the (2)P manifold, the one for Cu allowing the formation of a "belt" of five He atoms while the one for Au being completely repulsive. Conversely, spin-orbit coupling has only a weak effect on the (2)D manifold due to the nearly degenerate nature of the diatomic potentials. Structural and energetic results from DMC have been used to support experimental indications for the formation of metastable exciplexes or the opening of non-radiative depopulation channels in bulk and cold gaseous He.

Abstract
Low energy (thermal) free jet (supersonic) molecular beams are used in a range of applications from surface science and surface deposition to quantum coherence and gas kinetics experiments. A free jet molecular beam is created by a gas expansion from a high pressure reservoir through a small aperture (nozzle). The nozzle typically has a diameter of 2-20 μm. The central part of the beam is selected using a skimmer, typically up to 500 μm in diameter. Recent years have seen the introduction of highly spatially confined beam sources based on micrometer skimmers and micrometer or even sub-micrometer nozzles. Such sources have been applied, for example, in the investigation of superfluidity and in neutral helium microscopy. However, up till now no source design allowing the precise positioning of the micro-skimmer relative to the nozzle has been available. This is an important issue because the relative position of skimmer and nozzle can influence the beam properties considerably. Here we present the design and implementation of a new molecular beam source, which allows an automatized, 50 nm precision positioning of the skimmer relative to the nozzle. The source is liquid nitrogen cooled and the temperature can be controlled between 110 K and 350 K with a temperature fluctuation of less than ±0.1 K over several hours. Beam intensity measurements using a 5 μm nozzle and a skimmer 5 μm in diameter are presented for stagnation pressures po in the range 3-180 bars. A 2D beam profile scan, using a 9.5 μm skimmer and a 5 μm nozzle is presented as a further documentation of the versatility of the new design and as an illustration of the influence of the relative skimmer-nozzle position on the beam properties.

Abstract

We
report on the spectroscopic investigation of lithium atoms and
lithium dimers in their triplet manifold on the surface of helium
nanodroplets (HeN). We present the excitation spectrum
of the 3p ← 2s and 3d ← 2s two-photon transitions for
single Li atoms on HeN. The atoms are excited from the
2S(Σ) ground state into Δ, Π, and Σ pseudodiatomic
molecular substates. Excitation spectra are recorded by resonance
enhanced multiphoton ionization time-of-flight (REMPI-TOF) mass spectroscopy,
which allows an investigation of the exciplex (Li*–Hem, m = 1–3) formation process
in the Li–HeN system. Electronic states are shifted
and broadened with respect to free atom states, which is explained
within the pseudodiatomic model. The assignment is assisted by theoretical
calculations, which are based on the Orsay–Trento density functional
where the interaction between the helium droplet and the lithium atom
is introduced by a pairwise additive approach. When a droplet is doped
with more than one alkali atom, the fragility of the alkali–HeN systems leads preferably to the formation of high-spin molecules
on the droplets. We use this property of helium nanodroplets for the
preparation of Li dimers in their triplet ground state (13Σu+).
The excitation spectrum of the 23Πg(ν′
= 0–11) ← 13Σu+(ν″ = 0) transition is presented.
The interaction between the molecule and the droplet manifests in
a broadening of the transitions with a characteristic asymmetric form.
The broadening extends to the blue side of each vibronic level, which
is caused by the simultaneous excitation of the molecule and vibrations
of the droplet (phonons). The two isotopes of Li form 6Li2 and 7Li2 as well as isotope
mixed 6Li7Li molecules on the droplet surface.
By using REMPI-TOF mass spectroscopy, isotope-dependent effects could
be studied.

Abstract
The stability of the ground or excited state calcium atom in an argon-doped helium droplet has been investigated using an extension of the helium density functional method to treat clusters. This work was motivated by the experimental study presented in a companion paper, hereafter called Paper I [A. Masson, M. Briant, J. M. Mestdagh, M. A. Gaveau, A. Hernando, and N. Halberstadt, J. Chem. Phys. 137, 184310 (2012)], which investigated Ca(2) photodissociation in an argon-doped helium droplet and the nature of the fluorescent species. It is found that one single argon atom is sufficient to bring the calcium atom inside the droplet, for droplets of over 200 helium atoms. The absorption and emission spectra of CaAr(M) (M = 0-7) clusters have been simulated using the recently developed density sampling method to describe the influence of the helium environment. Absorption spectra exhibit broad, double bands that are significantly blueshifted with respect to the calcium atomic line. The emission spectra are less broad and redshifted with respect to the calcium resonance line. The shifts are found to be additive only for M ≤ 2, because only the first two argon atoms are located in equivalent positions around the calcium p orbital. This finding gives a justification for the fit presented in the companion paper, which uses the observed shifts in the emission spectra as a function of argon pressure to deduce the shifts as a function of the number of argon atoms present in the cluster. An analysis of this fit is presented here, based on the calculated shifts. It is concluded that the emitting species following Ca(2) photodissociation in an argon-doped droplet in Paper I could be Ca∗Ar(M) in a partly evaporated droplet where less than 200 helium atoms remain.

Abstract
Rubidium atom Rydberg states perturbed by helium droplets of different sizes provide insight into the role of a nanosized dielectric on the Coulomb potential. The observation of droplet size-dependent shifts of excited states with respect to bare atom states is explained by a decreased quantum defect and a lowered ionization threshold. Within the scope of a Rydberg model, we demonstrate that quantum defects and ionization potentials are constant for each specific Rydberg series, which confirms the Rydberg character of excited Rubidium states on helium droplets. A set of six Rydberg series could be identified. Individual Rydberg states are observed with effective principal quantum numbers up to n* ≈ 19 and l ≤ 3, for which the expectation value of the electron orbital radius is about 10 times larger than the droplet radius.

Abstract
Hyperfine resolved electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements of single rubidium ((87)Rb) atoms isolated on superfluid helium nanodroplets are presented. In accordance with our previous work on (85)Rb, we find a relative increase of the hyperfine constant a(HFS) by about 400 ppm, depending on the size of the droplets. In order to optimize the ESR signal intensities, the processes of optical pumping of Rb atoms on helium droplets and of optical detection of the ESR transitions are investigated in detail. Both the laser intensity and polarization influences the ESR signal intensities. A simple model for optical pumping of Rb atoms on helium droplets is presented, which agrees well with the experimental results.

Abstract
The vibrational wave-packet dynamics of diatomic rubidium molecules (Rb(2)) in triplet states formed on the surface of superfluid helium nanodroplets is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Detailed comparison of experimental femtosecond pump-probe spectra with dissipative quantum dynamics simulations reveals that vibrational relaxation is the main source of dephasing. The rate constant for vibrational relaxation in the first excited triplet state 1(3)Σ(g)+ is found to be constant γ ≈ 0.5 ns(-1) for the lowest vibrational levels v ≲ 15 and to increase sharply when exciting to higher energies.

Abstract
Helium nanodroplets doped with rubidium atoms are ionized by applying a resonant two-step ionization scheme. Subsequent immersion of rubidium ions is observed in time-of-flight mass spectra. While alkali-metal atoms usually desorb from the surface of a helium nanodroplet upon electronic excitation, rubidium in its excited 5(2)P(1/2) state provides an exception from this rule (Auböck et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 2008, 101, 35301). In our new experiment, Rb atoms are selectively excited either to the 5(2)P(1/2) or to the 5(2)P(3/2) state. From there they are ionized by a laser pulse. Time-of-flight mass spectra of the ionization products reveal that the intermediate population of the 5(2)P(1/2) state does not only make the ionization process Rb-monomer selective, but also gives rise to a very high yield of Rb(+)-He(N) complexes. Ions with masses of up to several thousand amu have been monitored, which can be explained by an immersion of the single Rb ion into the He nanodroplet, where most likely a snowball is formed in the center of the He nanodroplet. As the most stable position for an ion is in the center of a He nanodroplet, our results agree well with theory.

Abstract
We measured laser-induced-fluorescence (LIF) and beam-depletion (BD) spectra of rubidium atoms (5S-5P transition) on the surface of superfluid helium nanodroplets (M-He_{N} with M=Rb). It is known that when M is a lighter alkali atom electronic excitation always leads to detachment of the excited atom (M;{*}). The dissociation energy, few tens cm;{-1}, comes either as photon excess energy or from the barrierless formation of a M;{*}-He exciplex. We observe that this picture does not hold when M=Rb and the photon excess energy is small: we are able to excite atoms without detaching them from the droplet, thanks to a barrier preventing formation of the exciplex. This system is ideally suited for optical spin pumping in a He nanodroplet, whose achievement we explicitly demonstrate in a pump-probe magnetic circular dichroism experiment.

Abstract
The electronic excitation spectra of all possible homo- and heteronuclear high-spin (quartet) trimers of K and Rb (KxRb(3-x), x=0...3) assembled on the surface of superfluid helium droplets, are measured in the spectral range from 10,600 to 17,400 cm(-1). A regular series of corresponding bands is observed, reflecting the similar electronic structure of all these trimers. For the assignment and separation of overlapping bands, we determine x directly, with mass-selected beam depletion, and indirectly with a V-type double-resonance scheme. The assignment is confirmed by high-level ab initio calculations of the electronic structure of the bare trimers. The level structure is rationalized in terms of harmonic-oscillator states of the three valence electrons in a quantum-dot-like confining potential. We predict that three should be a magic number for high-spin alkali clusters.

Abstract
In this paper, we discuss the electronic structure of alkali dimer molecules in 3Pig states on the surface of a helium droplet. The perturbation due to the droplet will in general not satisfy rotational symmetry around the internuclear axis of the diatom and thus, in addition to a broadening and blue shift, will cause a splitting of electronic levels that are degenerate in the free molecules. We propose a model based on general symmetry arguments and on a small number of physically reasonable parameters. We demonstrate that such a model accounts for the essential features of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of the (1)3Pig-a3Sigma+ transition of Rb2 and K2. Furthermore the MCD spectra, analyzed according to the approach of Langford and Williamson [J. Phys. Chem. A 1998, 102, 2415], allow a determination of the populations of Zeeman sublevels in the ground state and thus a measurement of the surface temperature of the droplet. The latter agrees with the accepted temperature, 0.37 K, measured in the interior of a droplet.

Abstract
We present a theoretical and experimental study of the laser-induced formation process and of the emission spectra of Cs*He(n) exciplexes in the hcp and bcc phases of solid helium. Two different exciplex molecules are detected: a linear triatomic Cs*He2, which can exist in two electronic states: APi(1/2) and BPi(3/2), and a larger complex, where six or seven He atoms form a ring around a single cesium atom in the 6P(1/2) state. A theoretical model is presented, which allows the interpretation of the experimentally observed spectra.

Abstract
We have observed several new spectral features in the fluorescence of cesium atoms implanted in the hcp phase of solid helium following laser excitation to the 62P states. Based on calculations of the emission spectra using semiempirical Cs-He pair potentials the newly discovered lines can be assigned to the decay of specific Cs*Hen exciplexes: an apple-shaped Cs(APi3/2)He2 and a dumbbell-shaped Cs(APi1/2)Hen exciplex with a well-defined number n of bound helium atoms. While the former has been observed in other environments, it was commonly believed that exciplexes with n>2 might not exist. The calculations suggest Cs(APi1/2)He7 to be the most probable candidate for that exciplex, in which the helium atoms are arranged on a ring around the waist of the dumbbell-shaped electronic density distribution of the cesium atom.

Abstract
Cesium oligomers are formed on helium nanodroplets which are doped with one or a few Cs atoms. The monomer absorption of the first electronic p<--s transition upon laser excitation is probed. Spectra employing laser-induced fluorescence, beam depletion, and resonant photoionization are compared. In particular, mass-resolved photoionization allows us to specifically probe excitation induced processes such as, e.g., the formation of cesium-helium exciplexes. Absorption spectra of Cs dimers and trimers are recorded in the spectral region accessible by a Ti:sapphire laser. Assignment of dimer spectra is achieved by comparison with model calculations based on ab initio potentials. Electronic absorption lines of Cs trimers are attributed to transitions in the quartet manifold.

Abstract
Nanodroplets of either superfluid 4He or normal fluid 3He are doped with Rb atoms that are bound to the surface of the droplets. The formation of RbHe exciplexes upon 5P(3/2) excitation is monitored in real time by femtosecond pump-probe techniques. We find formation times of 8.5 and 11.6 ps for Rb 4He and Rb 3He, respectively. A comparison to calculations based on a tunneling model introduced for these systems by Reho et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 113, 9694 (2000)]] shows that the proposed mechanism cannot account for our findings. Apparently, a different relaxation dynamics of the superfluid opposed to the normal fluid surface is responsible for the observed formation times.
