Phase diagrams classification of thermoreversibly associating systems with due regard for mesoscopic cyclization effects

Nonlocal density functional theory of water taking into account many-body dipole correlations: binodal and surface tension of 'liquid-vapour' interface

In this paper we formulate a nonlocal density functional theory of inhomogeneous water. We model a water molecule as a couple of oppositely charged sites. The negatively charged sites interact with each other through the Lennard-Jones potential (steric and dispersion interactions), square-well potential (short-range specific interactions due to electron charge transfer), and Coulomb potential, whereas the positively charged sites interact with all types of sites by applying the Coulomb potential only. Taking into account the nonlocal packing effects via the fundamental measure theory, dispersion and specific interactions in the mean-field approximation, and electrostatic interactions at the many-body level through the random phase approximation, we describe the liquid-vapour interface. We demonstrate that our model without explicit account of the association of water molecules due to hydrogen bonding and with explicit account of the electrostatic interactions at the many-body level is able to describe the liquid-vapour coexistence curve and the surface tension at the ambient pressures and temperatures. We obtain very good agreement with available in the literature MD simulation results for density profile of liquid-vapour interface at ambient state parameters. The formulated theory can be used as a theoretical background for describing of the capillary phenomena, occurring in micro- and mesoporous materials.

Coiled-Coil Hydrogels. Effect of Grafted Copolymer Composition and Cyclization on Gelation

A mean-field theoretical approach was developed to model gelation of solutions of hydrophilic polymers with grafted peptide motifs capable of forming associates of coiled-coil type. The model addresses the competition between associates engaged in branching and cyclization. It results in relative concentrations of intra- and intermolecular associates in dependence on associate strength and motif concentration. The cyclization probability is derived from the model of equivalent Gaussian chain and takes into account all possible paths connecting the interacting motifs. Examination of the association-dissociation equilibria, controlled by the equilibrium constant for association taken as input information, determines the fractions of inter- and intramolecularly associated motifs. The gelation model is based on the statistical theory of branching processes and in combination with the cyclization model predicts the critical concentration delimiting the regions of gelled and liquid states of the system. A comparison between predictions of the model and experimental data available for aqueous solutions of poly[N-(2-hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide] grafted with oppositely charged pentaheptad peptides, CCE and CCK, indicates that the association constant of grafted motifs by four orders of magnitude lower than that of free motifs. It is predicted that at the critical concentration of each motif of about 6×10(-7) mol/cm(3), about half of motifs in associated state is engaged in intramolecular bonds.

The global phase behavior of the two-component systems with intracomponent association: Flory approach

Within the Flory approach we study the phase diagrams of two-component fluids, the molecules of each component A(f(A)), B(f(B)) bearing f(A) (f(B)) functional groups capable of forming thermoreversible A-A and B-B bonds. We develop a general procedure to classify these diagrams depending on the values of four governing parameters -- entropies and normalized energies of A-A and B-B bonds, and give full topological classification of phase diagrams with f(A,B)> or =3. We show that these phase diagrams can have immiscibility loops and up to four critical points.

Simulation and theory of self-assembly and network formation in reversibly cross-linked equilibrium polymers

A simulation model of hard spheres capable of reversible assembly into chains, which then may reversibly cross-link into networks, has been studied through grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation. Effects of varying intra- and interchain bond strengths, chain flexibilities, and restrictions on cross-linking angle were investigated. Observations including chain-length distributions and phase separation could be captured in most cases using a simple model theory. The coupling of chain growth to cross-linking was shown to be highly sensitive to the treatment of cross-linking by chain ends. In some systems, ladderlike domains of several cross-links joining two chains were common, resulting from cooperativity in the cross-linking. Extended to account for this phenomenon, the model theory predicts that such cooperativity will suppress phase separation in weakly polymerizing chains and at high cross-link concentration. In the present model, cross-linking stabilizes the isotropic phase with respect to the nematic phase, causing a shift in the isotropic-nematic transition to higher monomer concentration than in simple equilibrium polymers.

Control of gel swelling and phase separation of weakly charged thermoreversible gels by salt addition

Doping of thermoreversible polymer gels with charged monomers provides a way to control phase separation and gelation conditions by coupling the properties of the gel with a tunable ionic environment. We analyze the dependence of the gelation and phase separation conditions on the amount of salt present using a mean field model of weakly charged associative polymers. The ions and co-ions present are explicitly considered at the mean field level, and we determine their concentrations in the different equilibrium phases when the system undergoes phase separation. For weak polymer charge, the entropic contributions of the ions to the free energy of the system play a central role in the determination of the location of phase equilibrium. In the simplest case, when the associative interaction responsible for gel formation is independent of the electrostatic interaction, the addition of salt changes the polymer equilibrium concentrations and indirectly changes the measurable swelling of the gel. We construct phase diagrams of these systems showing the location of the coexistence region, the gel-sol boundary and the location of the tie-lines. We determine the swelling of the gel within the co-existence region. Our main result is that the description of the effect of the salt on the properties of the weakly charged gel can be described through an extra contribution to the effective immiscibility parameter χ proportional to the square of the doping degree f(2) and to the inverse square of the added salt concentration s(-2).

Necklace-cloverleaf transition in associating RNA-like diblock copolymers

We consider a A{m}B{n} diblock copolymer, whose links are capable of forming local reversible bonds with each other. We assume that the resulting structure of the bonds is RNA like--i.e., topologically isomorphic to a tree. We show that, depending on the relative strengths of A-A , A-B , and B-B contacts, such a polymer can be in one of two different states. Namely, if a self-association is preferable (i.e., A-A and B-B bonds are comparatively stronger than A-B contacts), then the polymer forms a typical randomly branched cloverleaf structure with the so-called roughness exponent gamma = 1/2 . On the contrary, if alternating association is preferable (i.e., A-B bonds are stronger than A-A and B-B contacts), then the polymer tends to form a generally linear necklace structure with gamma = 1 . The transition between cloverleaf and necklace states is studied in detail, and it is shown that it is a second-order phase transition.

Weak segregation theory and non-conventional morphologies in the ternary ABC triblock copolymers

The statistical theory of microphase separation in the ternary ABC triblock copolymers is presented and the corresponding phase diagrams are built both for the linear and miktoarm copolymers. For this purpose the Leibler weak segregation theory in molten diblock copolymers is generalized to multi-component monodisperse block copolymers with due regard for the 2nd shell harmonics contributions defined in the paper. The Hildebrand approximation for the chi-parameters is used. The physical meaning of this and alternative choices for the chi-parameters is discussed. The symmetric A(f)B(1-2f)C(f) copolymers with the middle block non-selective with respect to the side ones are shown to undergo the continuous ODT not only into the lamellar phase but also, instead, into various non-conventional cubic phases (depending on the middle block composition it could be the simple cubic, face-centered cubic or non-centrosymmetric phase, which reveals the symmetry of I4(1) 32 space group No. 214 first predicted to appear in molten block copolymers). For asymmetric linear ABC copolymers a region of compositions is found where the weakly segregated gyroid (double gyroid) phase exists between the planar hexagonal and lamellar or one of the non-conventional cubic phases up to the very critical point. In contrast, the miktoarm (star) ABC block copolymers with one of its arm non-selective with respect to the two others are shown to reveal a pronounced tendency towards strong segregation, which is preceded by increase of stability of the conventional BCC phase and a peculiar weakly segregated BCC phase (BCC(3)), where the dominant harmonics belong to the 3rd coordination sphere of the reciprocal lattice. The validity region of the developed theory is discussed and outlined in the composition triangles both for linear and miktoarm copolymers. We present also the list of the 2nd shell harmonics (SAXS reflections) allowed and prohibited in some of the non-conventional morphologies due to the weak segregation considerations and comparison of our results with the preceding SCFT treatment of the ABC copolymers by Matsen.

Thermoreversible crosslinking of polyelectrolyte chains

Thermoreversible crosslinking of polyelectrolyte chains via short-range attractions such as hydrogen bonding induced by uncharged or charged particles is studied within the Flory model of ideal association. Electrostatic interactions between the charges at different linking fractions are taken into account by using a generalized random phase approximation approach which includes the network connectivity. We find that at certain concentration of linking agents an infinitely large polymer network is formed. We calculate the structural gelation lines for linkers of different charges and functionalities.
