Segmental dynamics of disordered styrene–isoprene tetrablock copolymers

Coarse-graining of polyisoprene melts using inverse Monte Carlo and local density potentials

Bottom-up coarse-graining of polymers is commonly performed by matching structural order parameters such as distribution of bond lengths, bending and dihedral angles, and pair distribution functions. In this study, we introduce the distribution of nearest-neighbors as an additional order parameter in the concept of local density potentials. We describe how the inverse-Monte Carlo method provides a framework for forcefield development that is capable of overcoming challenges associated with the parameterization of interaction terms in polymer systems. The technique is applied on polyisoprene melts as a prototype system. We demonstrate that while different forcefields can be developed that perform equally in terms of matching target distributions, the inclusion of nearest-neighbors provides a straightforward route to match both thermodynamic and conformational properties. We find that several temperature state points can also be addressed, provided that the forcefield is refined accordingly. Finally, we examine both the single-particle and the collective dynamics of the coarse-grain models, demonstrating that all forcefields present a similar acceleration relative to the atomistic systems.

Effects of nanoscopic-confinement on polymer dynamics

The static and dynamic behavior of polymers in confinement close to interfaces can be very different from that in the bulk. Among the various geometries, intercalated nanocomposites, in which polymer films of ∼1 nm thickness reside between the parallel inorganic surfaces of layered silicates in a well-ordered multilayer, offer a unique avenue for the investigation of the effects of nanoconfinement on polymer structure and dynamics by utilizing conventional analytical techniques and macroscopic specimens. In this article, we provide a review of research activities mainly in our laboratory on polymer dynamics under severe confinement utilizing different polymer systems: polar and non-polar polymers were mixed with hydrophilic or organophilic silicates, respectively, whereas hyperbranched polymers were studied in an attempt to probe the effect of polymer-surface interactions by altering the number and the kinds of functional groups in the periphery of the branched polymers. The polymer dynamics was probed by quasielastic neutron scattering and dielectric relaxation spectroscopy and was compared with that of the polymers in the bulk. In all cases, very local sub-Tg processes related to the motion of side and/or end groups as well as the segmental α-relaxation were identified with distinct differences recorded between the bulk and the confined systems. Confinement was found not to affect the very local motion in the case of the linear chains whereas it made it easier for hyperbranched polymers due to modifications of the hydrogen bond network. The segmental relaxation in confinement becomes faster than that in the bulk, exhibits Arrhenius temperature dependence and is observed even below the bulk Tg due to reduced cooperativity in the confined systems.

Dynamics of poly(ethylene oxide) in a blend with poly(methyl methacrylate): a quasielastic neutron scattering and molecular dynamics simulations study

In this paper, we have addressed the question of the dynamic miscibility in a blend characterized by very different glass-transition temperatures, Tg, for the components: poly(ethylene oxide) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PEO/PMMA). The combination of quasielastic neutron scattering with isotopic labeling and fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations has allowed us to selectively investigate the dynamics of the two components in the picosecond-10 nanoseconds scale at temperatures close and above the Tg of the blend. The main focus was on the PEO component, i.e., that of the lowest Tg, but first we have characterized the dynamics of the other component in the blend and of the pure PEO homopolymer as reference. In the region investigated, the dynamics of PMMA in the blend is strongly affected by the alpha-methyl rotation; an additional process detected in the experimental window 65 K above the blend-Tg can be identified as the merged alphabeta process of this component that shows strong deviations from Gaussian behavior. On the other hand, pure PEO displays entropy driven dynamics up to very large momentum transfers. Such kind of motion seems to freeze when the PEO chains are in the blend. There, we have directly observed a very heterogeneous and moreover confined dynamics for the PEO component. The presence of the hardly moving PMMA matrix leads to the creation of little pockets of mobility where PEO can move. The characteristic size of such confined islands of mobility might be estimated to be of approximately 1 nm. These findings are corroborated by the simulation study, which has been an essential support and guide in our data analysis procedure.
