Abstract
Starting from a model study of the collinear (H, H2) exchange reaction in 1959, the time-dependent quantum mechanical wave packet (TDQMWP) method has come a long way in dealing with systems as large as Cl + CH4. The fast Fourier transform method for evaluating the second order spatial derivative of the wave function and split-operator method or Chebyshev polynomial expansion for determining the time evolution of the wave function for the system have made the approach highly accurate from a practical point of view. The TDQMWP methodology has been able to predict state-to-state differential and integral reaction cross sections accurately, in agreement with available experimental results for three dimensional (H, H2) collisions, and identify reactive scattering resonances too. It has become a practical computational tool in predicting the observables for many A + BC exchange reactions in three dimensions and a number of larger systems. It is equally amenable to determining the bound and quasi-bound states for a variety of molecular systems. Just as it is able to deal with dissociative processes (without involving basis set expansion), it is able to deal with multi-mode nonadiabatic dynamics in multiple electronic states with equal ease. We present an overview of the method and its strength and limitations, citing examples largely from our own research groups.

Abstract
This paper deals with the treatment of quantum interferences in the semiclassical initial value theory of rotationally inelastic scattering in the interaction picture. Like many semiclassical methods, the previous approach involves a phase index related to sign changes of a Jacobian whose square root is involved in the calculations. It is shown that replacing the original phase index by a new one extends the range of applicability of the theory. The resulting predictions are in close agreement with exact quantum scattering results for a model of atom-rigid diatom collision involving strong interferences. The developments are performed within the framework of the planar rotor model, but are readily applicable to three-dimensional collisions.

Abstract
The O(1D) + H2 reaction is a prototype for simple atom-diatom insertion type mechanisms considered to involve deep potential wells. While exact quantum mechanical methods can be applied to describe the dynamics, such calculations are challenging given the numerous bound quantum states involved. Consequently, efforts have been made to develop alternative theoretical strategies to portray accurately the reactive process. Here we report an experimental and theoretical investigation of the O(1D) + D2 reaction over the 50-296 K range. The calculations employ three conceptually different approaches - mean potential phase space theory, the statistical quantum mechanical method and ring polymer molecular dynamics. The calculated rate constants are in excellent agreement over the entire temperature range, exhibiting only weak temperature dependence. The agreement between experiment and theory is also very good, with discrepancies smaller than 26%. Taken together, the present and previous theoretical results validate the hypothesis that long-lived complex formation dominates the reaction dynamics at low temperature.

Abstract
The N((2)D) + H2O is a reaction with competitive product channels, passing through several intermediates. Dynamics of this reaction had been investigated by two of the present authors at two collision energies, Ec, using the crossed molecular beams mass spectrometric method ( Faraday Discuss. 2001 , 119 , 27 - 49 ). The complicated mechanism of this reaction and puzzling results encouraged us to investigate the reaction in a joint experimental/theoretical study. Quasiclassical trajectory (QCT) calculations on an ab initio potential energy surface describing all channels of the title reaction are done with a focus on the N/H exchange channels. Interesting results of QCT calculations, in very good agreement with experimental data, reveal subtle details of the reaction dynamics of the title reaction to HNO/HON + H exit channels by disentangling the different routes to formation of the two possible HNO/HON isomers and therefore assisting in a critical manner the derivation of the reaction mechanism. Results of the present study show that the nonstatistical HNOH intermediate governs exit channels; therefore, the HON channel is as important as that of HNO. The study also confirms that the H2 + NO molecular channel is negligible even though the barrier to its formation is calculated to be well below the reactant asymptote.

Abstract
The vibrational relaxation of OH(X(2)Π) by collisions with rare gases is very slow due to small molecular interactions. No measurement of the rate coefficients has been made for relaxation of relatively low vibrational levels v ≤ 4 of OH by He, and there is only one report of the upper limit for v = 2, <1 × 10(-14) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1). In this article, we have studied vibrational relaxation of the levels v = 1-4 of OH(X(2)Π) by collisions with He. A gaseous mixture of O3 and H2 in a carrier gas at 70-130 Torr of He was irradiated at 266 nm, and OH(X(2)Π, v ≤ 4) was generated in the reaction O((1)D) + H2. A single vibrational level of OH was detected with laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) via the A(2)Σ(+)-X(2)Π transition. Time-resolved LIF intensities of OH(v) were recorded, and kinetic analysis was made by an originally developed integrated profiles method (IPM). On the basis of the evaluation of the pressure-dependent rate coefficients of diffusion loss and the effect of impurities on the kinetics, the rate coefficients of vibrational relaxation for OH(X(2)Π, v = 1-4) by He have been determined to be (2.9 ± 1.5) × 10(-17), (1.4 ± 0.4) × 10(-16), (5.2 ± 0.5) × 10(-16), and (1.6 ± 0.2) × 10(-15) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) for v = 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively (the confidence limits are 2σ). The rate coefficients are larger at higher vibrational levels and smoothly correlate to those reported previously for v = 10-12.

Abstract
The stereodynamics of the title reaction on the ab initio1A′ potential energy surface (PES) (B. Bussery-Honvault, P. Honvault, and J.-M. Launay. 2001. J. Chem. Phys. 115: 10701) at a collision energy of 16 kJ/mol have been studied using quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) method. Vector properties including angular momentum alignment parameters and four polarization-dependent differential cross sections (PDDCS) of the product CH are presented. Furthermore, the influence of reagent vibrational and rotational excitations on the product vector properties have also been studied in the present work. The calculated results indicate that the angle distributions of the CH product are mainly dominated by backward–forward scattering.

Abstract
In this communication, we highlight that statistical approaches for chemical reactions describe reasonably well the low energy dynamics of the title process. Consequently, such methods prove to be valuable to compute rate constants from low to room temperatures. Results are compared with experiment and recent precise quantum wave packet calculations [J. Abstract
Quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) calculations of total reaction probabilities and vibrationally state-resolved reaction probabilities at total angular momentum J = 0 as a function of collision energy for the C(1D) + H2 (v = 0, j = 0) reactions have been performed on an ab initio potential-energy surface [ J. Chem. Phys. 2001, 115, 10701]. In addition, the integral cross sections as a function of collision energy have been carried out for the same reaction. The product rotational alignments have also been calculated, which are almost invariant with respect to collision energies.

Abstract
A nonconventional application of phase space theory to the insertion reactions A+H(2), with A=C((1)D) and S((1)D), is presented. Instead of approximating the potential energies of interaction between separated fragments by their isotropic long-range contributions, as in the original theory, the latter are replaced by the accurate potential energies averaged with respect to Jacobi angles. The integral and differential cross sections obtained from this mean potential phase space theory (MPPST) turn out to be in very satisfying agreement with the benchmark predictions of the time-independent and time-dependent statistical quantum methods. The formal and numerical simplicity of MPPST with respect to any approach combining statistical assumptions and dynamical calculations makes it a promising tool for studying indirect polyatomic reactions.

Abstract
The study of state-to-state dynamics of elementary bimolecular reactions has provided remarkable insights into chemical reactivity at the most fundamental level. This review covers exciting developments in this important field in the past decade. I focus on recent studies of quantum-state-resolved molecular-beam reactive-scattering studies of elementary chemical reactions, from triatomic to polyatomic systems. Researchers have made great advances in the fundamental understanding of many elementary chemical reactions through state-to-state dynamics studies. The strong interaction between theory and experiment has significantly enhanced our understanding of the dynamics of these reactions. I hope this review provides a glimpse of this exciting research field to both experts and beginners.

Abstract
Recent progress in the study of insertion reactions of hydrogen molecules with excited atoms is reviewed in this article. In particular, the dynamics of the reaction of O(1D), N(2D), C(1D), and S(1D) with H2 and its isotopomers, which have received a great deal of attention over the past decade, are examined in detail. All of these systems have in common the existence of several potential energy surfaces (PES) correlating with the reagents' states, and consequently, they can give rise to reaction following different adiabatic and nonadiabatic pathways. The main contribution, however, arises from their ground singlet PESs which feature the existence of deep wells with small or null barriers for insertion. Accordingly, these reactions proceed mainly via formation of relatively long-lived collision complexes and display an overall nearly statistical behavior. In spite of their similarities, the various reactions have peculiar characteristics caused by important differences of their respective PESs. The contribution of excited PES to the global reactivity, which has also become an important issue and a challenge both for theory and experiment, is also examined. The different theoretical approaches are discussed in the text, along with the experimental results obtained by a variety of techniques. The recent exact quantum treatments of these reactive systems together with the development of a rigorous statistical model have contributed to a very accurate description which in many cases matches very well the detailed measurements. The quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) method has also provided a fairly accurate description of the reaction dynamics for these systems. In particular, the analysis in terms of collision times has yielded interesting clues about the reaction mechanisms.

Abstract
This paper is an overview of the theory of reactive scattering, with emphasis on fully quantum mechanical theories that have been developed to describe simple chemical reactions, especially atom-diatom reactions. We also describe related quasiclassical trajectory applications, and in all of this review the emphasis is on methods and applications concerned with state-resolved reaction dynamics. The review first provides an overview of the development of the theory, including a discussion of computational methods based on coupled channel calculations, variational methods, and wave packet methods. Choices of coordinates, including the use of hyperspherical coordinates are discussed, as are basis set and discrete variational representations. The review also summarizes a number of applications that have been performed, especially the two most comprehensively studied systems, H+H2 and F+H2, along with brief discussions of a large number of other systems, including other hydrogen atom transfer reactions, insertion reactions, electronically nonadiabatic reactions, and reactions involving four or more atoms. For each reaction we describe the method used and important new physical insight extracted from the results.

Abstract
Time-independent quantum mechanical (QM) and quasiclassical trajectory (QCT) scattering calculations have been carried out for the C(1D) + H2 --> CH + H reaction at a collision energy of 80 meV on a newly developed ab initio potential energy surface [B. Bussery-Honvault et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 7, 1476 (2005)] of 1 1A" symmetry, corresponding to the second singlet state 1 1B1 of CH2. A general good agreement has been found between the QM and QCT rotational distributions and differential cross sections (DCSs). In both cases, DCSs are strongly peaked in the forward direction with a small contribution in the backward direction in contrast with those obtained on the 1 1A' surface, which are nearly symmetric. Rotational distributions obtained on the 1 1A" surface are somewhat colder than those calculated on the 1 1A' surface. The specific dynamics and the contribution of the 1 1A" surface to the overall reactivity of this system are discussed.

Abstract
Quantum-state-resolved differential cross sections of the O((1)D) + HD --> OH + D reaction at the collision energy of 7.11 kJ/mol has been determined experimentally and theoretically. The results of the time-dependent wave-packet calculations are overall in good agreement with the crossed beam scattering data, providing a benchmark example of an asymmetric insertion reaction at the state-to-state scattering level. The good agreement between experiment and theory suggests that the underlying ground potential energy surface is generally correct and that the nonadiabatic effect involving the electronic excited pathway is apparently small in this system.

Abstract
Using an exact Chebyshev wave packet method, initial state-specified (upsilon(i)=0, j(i)=0,2) integral cross-sections and rate constants are obtained for the title reaction on the latest ab initio potential energy surface. Reaction probabilities up to J=29 are dependent on the reactant rotation and show mild oscillations superimposed on a broad background. Due to a barrier in the entrance channel, the cross sections increase with energy with clear thresholds and the rate constants vary with temperature in the Arrhenius form. The calculated canonical rate constant is in good agreement with the experimental measurements. Our results also indicate that the quasiclassical trajectory method underestimates the rate due to the neglect of tunneling, while the quantum statistical approach overestimates because of the short lifetime of the reaction intermediate.

Abstract
Integral cross sections and thermal rate constants have been calculated for the N((2)D)+H(2) reaction and its isotopic variants N((2)D)+D(2) and the two-channel N((2)D)+HD by means of quasiclassical trajectory and statistical quantum-mechanical model methods on the latest ab initio potential-energy surface [T.-S. Ho et al., J. Chem. Phys. 119, 3063 (2003)]. The effect of rotational excitation of the diatom on the dynamics of these reactions has been investigated and interesting discrepancies between the classical and statistical model calculations have been found. Whereas a net effect of reagent rotation on reactivity is always observed in the classical calculations, only a very slight effect is observed in the case of the asymmetric N((2)D)+HD reaction for the statistical quantum-mechanical method. The thermal rate constants calculated on this Potential-Energy Surface using quasiclassical trajectory and statistical model methods are in good agreement with the experimental determinations, although the latter are somewhat larger. A reevaluation of the collinear barrier of the potential surface used in the present study seems timely. Further theoretical and experimental studies are needed for a full understanding of the dynamics of the title reaction.

Abstract
In this paper, we report a combined experimental and theoretical study on the dynamics of the N(2D) + H2 insertion reaction at a collision energy of 15.9 kJ mol(-1). Product angular and velocity distributions have been obtained in crossed beam experiments and simulated by using the results of quantum mechanical (QM) scattering calculations on the accurate ab initio potential energy surface (PES) of Pederson et al. (J. Chem. Phys. 1999, 110, 9091). Since the QM calculations indicate that there is a significant coupling between the product angular and translational energy distributions, such a coupling has been explicitly included in the simulation of the experimental results. The very good agreement between experiment and QM calculations sustains the accuracy of the NH2 ab initio ground state PES. We also take the opportunity to compare the accurate QM differential cross sections with those obtained by two approximate methods, namely, the widely used quasiclassical trajectory calculations and a rigorous statistical method based on the coupled-channel theory.

Abstract
Phase space theory (PST) is applied to the calculation of state-resolved integral and differential cross sections for the complex-forming atom-diatom insertion reactions A + H(2) --> AH(2) --> AH + H with A = C((1)D), S((1)D), O((1)D), and N((2)D). In the asymptotic channels, vibration motion is quantized while rotation and translation motions are treated classically. The approach is compared to exact quantum scattering calculations and quantum statistical models. Given the simplicity of PST, the agreement with the previous much more refined treatments is very satisfying. Although PST is a well-established theory, this work is, to our knowledge, the first such systematic comparison of its predictions with accurate quantum scattering and quantum statistical calculations.

Abstract
In this paper we report a combined experimental and theoretical study on the dynamics of the insertion reaction C((1)D)+D(2) at 15.5 kJ mol(-1) collision energy. Product angular and velocity distributions have been obtained in crossed beam experiments and quasiclassical trajectory (QCT) and rigorous statistical calculations have been performed on the recent and accurate ab initio potential energy surface of Bussery-Honvault, Honvault, and Launay at the energy of the experiment. The molecular-beam results have been simulated using the theoretical calculations. Good agreement between experiment and both QCT and statistical predictions is found.
