Vibrational dynamics as an indicator of short-time interactions in glass-forming liquids and their possible relation to cooperativity

Vibrational spectroscopy of dynamic interactions and relaxation processes in ionic systems

In recent years, there has been a boom in the publication of research results on ionic (electrolyte) systems used in the creation of electrochemical energy systems (batteries, supercapacitors, etc.). One of the alternative ways to obtain dynamic information in ionic systems is spectroscopic experiments, and the most valuable information on the behavior of condensed systems at picosecond and adjacent time intervals is provided by vibrational spectroscopy. The source of this information is the analysis of the shape and width of the lines in the vibrational spectra of ion systems. This review aims to systematize the theoretical and methodological aspects of the study of the dynamics of ion systems by vibrational spectroscopy.

Composition and temperature-induced structural changes in lead-tellurite glasses on different length scales

Processes occurring at macroscopic and microscopic length scales across the glass transition (T(g)) in lead-tellurite glass (PbO)(x)(TeO(2))(1-x) (x = 0.1-0.3) are investigated using Brillouin and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. For all the samples, the temperature dependence of the longitudinal acoustic (LA) mode is found to exhibit a universal scaling below T(g) and a rapid softening above T(g). The lower value of elastic modulus at a higher concentration of network modifier PbO, estimated from Brillouin data, arises due to loss of network rigidity. From quantitative analysis of the reduced Raman spectra, several modes are found to exhibit anomalous changes across T(g). Instead of the expected anharmonic behaviour, several modes exhibit hardening, suggesting stiffening of the stretching force constants with temperature, the effect being more pronounced in glasses with higher x. In addition, incorporation of PbO in the glass is also found to narrow down the bond-length distribution, as evident from the sharpening of the Raman bands. The stiffening of the force constants of molecular units at a microscopic length scale and the decrease of elastic constant attributed to loss of network rigidity on a macroscopic length scale appear to be opposite. These different behaviours at two length scales are understood on the basis of a microscopic model involving TeO(n) and PbO units in the structure.

Local environment and dynamics of PO4 tetrahedra in Na–Al–PO3 glasses and melts

Glasses and melts in the system (NaPO3)(1-x)(Al(PO3)3)x were studied with the aim of obtaining information about the structure on the next larger scale beyond the PO4 group. Magic angle spinning NMR was applied to the pure NaPO3 glass and Raman scattering to systems with x = 0.00, 0.03, 0.06, 0.15, and 0.60 in the temperature range T = 300-1100 K. Comparison of the 31P chemical shift between glass and crystalline forms revealed that polymerization of the metaphosphate into tricyclophosphatelike (PO3)3(3-) rings is the dominant structure, ca. 80%, formed by the twofold vertex-joined PO4 groups in the glass. In the Raman study we focused on the prominent polarized band at ca. 1170 cm(-1) which is due to the symmetric breathing mode of the tetrahedral PO4 group. This band was decomposed into a few Gaussian lines. These component lines could be identified using the NMR results: two narrow components are due to PO4 groups in the tricyclophosphatelike rings, which have either a Na or an Al counterion and a third broad component is due to chain-polymerized (PO3(-))n. The variations of the component lines (peak positions, widths, and intensities) with respect to x and T are presented. We derive the shifts of the symmetric breathing mode frequency which are caused by Na or Al counterions, by ring closure, by x > 0, etc. The relative intensities of the narrow and broad components in the 1170-cm(-1) band of the Raman spectra are discussed. The amount of ring-to-chain transformation on addition of Al3+, and as functions of T and x, is derived. Indications for ordering on a next larger scale, derivable from Raman, NMR, and thermodynamics, are compared.
