Isotope effects in linear dihydrogen bonded complexes containing LiH

Hydrogen and Dihydrogen Bonds in the Reactions of Metal Hydrides

The dihydrogen bond-an interaction between a transition-metal or main-group hydride (M-H) and a protic hydrogen moiety (H-X)-is arguably the most intriguing type of hydrogen bond. It was discovered in the mid-1990s and has been intensively explored since then. Herein, we collate up-to-date experimental and computational studies of the structural, energetic, and spectroscopic parameters and natures of dihydrogen-bonded complexes of the form M-H···H-X, as such species are now known for a wide variety of hydrido compounds. Being a weak interaction, dihydrogen bonding entails the lengthening of the participating bonds as well as their polarization (repolarization) as a result of electron density redistribution. Thus, the formation of a dihydrogen bond allows for the activation of both the MH and XH bonds in one step, facilitating proton transfer and preparing these bonds for further transformations. The implications of dihydrogen bonding in different stoichiometric and catalytic reactions, such as hydrogen exchange, alcoholysis and aminolysis, hydrogen evolution, hydrogenation, and dehydrogenation, are discussed.

The mutual influence of Y···N and H···H interactions in XHY···NCH···HM complexes (X = F, Cl, Br; Y = S, Se; M = Li, Na, BeH, MgH): tuning of the chalcogen bond by dihydrogen bond interaction

The equilibrium structures, interaction energies, and bonding properties of ternary XHY···NCH···HM complexes are studied by ab initio calculations, where X = F, Cl, Br, Y = S, Se, and M = Li, Na, BeH, MgH. The ab initio calculations are carried out at the MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level. The results indicate that all optimized Y···N and H···H binding distances in the ternary complexes are smaller than the corresponding values in the binary systems. The calculated cooperative energies (Ecoop) are between −0.20 kcal/mol in BrHS···NCH···HBeH and −3.29 kcal/mol in FHSe···NCH···HNa. For a given Y and M, the estimated Ecoop values increase as X = F > Cl > Br. In addition, the selenium-bonded complexes exibit larger Ecoop values than those of the sulfur-bonded counterparts. The cooperativity between Y···N and H···H interactions is further analyzed by quantum theory of atoms in molecules and natural bond orbital methods. Cooperative effects make an increase in the J(Y–N) and J(H–H) spin–spin coupling constants of the ternary complexes with respect to the binary systems.

H∕D isotope effect on the dihydrogen bond of NH4+⋯BeH2 by ab initio path integral molecular dynamics simulation

In order to investigate the HD isotope effect on a dihydrogen bonded cation system, we have studied NH+4...BeH2 and its isotopomers by ab initio path integral molecular dynamics. It is found that the dihydrogen bond can be exchanged by NH+(4) rotation. The deuterated isotopomer (ND+(4)...BeD(2); DD) can exchange the dihydrogen bond more easily than other isotopomers such as (NH+4...BeH2; HH). This unusual isotope effect is ascribed to the "quantum localization" which occurs when the effective energy barrier for the rotational mode becomes higher by the zero point energy of other modes. We also found that the binding energy of dihydrogen bonds for DD species is the smallest among the isotopomers.
