The field-ionization of near-dissociation ion-pair states of I2

Predissociation of high-lying Rydberg states of molecular iodine via ion-pair states

Velocity map imaging of the photofragments arising from two-photon photoexcitation of molecular iodine in the energy range 73 500-74 500 cm(-1) covering the bands of high-lying gerade Rydberg states [(2)Π1/2]c6d;0g (+) and [(2)Π1/2]c6d;2g has been applied. The ion signal was dominated by the atomic fragment ion I(+). Up to 5 dissociation channels yielding I(+) ions with different kinetic energies were observed when the I2 molecule was excited within discrete peaks of Rydberg states and their satellites in this region. One of these channels gives rise to images of I(+) and I(-) ions with equal kinetic energy indicating predissociation of I2 via ion-pair states. The contribution of this channel was up to about 50% of the total I(+) signal. The four other channels correspond to predissociation via lower lying Rydberg states giving rise to excited iodine atoms providing I(+) ions by subsequent one-photon ionization by the same laser pulse. The ratio of these channels varied from peak to peak in the spectrum but their total ionic signal was always much higher than the signal of (2 + 1) resonance enhanced multi-photon ionization of I2, which was previously considered to be the origin of ionic signal in this spectral range. The first-tier E0g (+) and D(')2g ion-pair states are concluded to be responsible for predissociation of Rydberg states [(2)Π1/2]c6d;0g (+) and [(2)Π1/2]c6d;2g, respectively. Further predissociation of these ion-pair states via lower lying Rydberg states gives rise to excited I(5s(2)5p(4)6s(1)) atoms responsible for major part of ion signal. The isotropic angular distribution of the photofragment recoil directions observed for all channels indicates that the studied Rydberg states are long-lived compared with the rotational period of the I2 molecule.

Spectroscopic observation and characterization of H(+)H(-) heavy Rydberg states

A series of discrete resonances was observed in the spectrum of H2, which can be unambiguously assigned to bound quantum states in the 1/R Coulombic potential of the H+H- ion-pair system. Two-step laser excitation was performed, using tunable extreme ultraviolet radiation at lambda = 94-96 nm in the first step, and tunable ultraviolet radiation in the range lambda = 310-350 nm in the second step. The resonances, detected via H+ and H2+ ions produced in the decay process, follow a sequence of principal quantum numbers (n = 140-230) associated with a Rydberg formula in which the Rydberg constant is mass scaled. The series converges upon the ionic H+H- dissociation threshold. This limit can be calculated without further assumptions from known ionization and dissociation energies in the hydrogen system and the electronegativity of the hydrogen atom. A possible excitation mechanism is discussed in terms of a complex resonance. Detailed measurements are performed to unravel and quantify the decay of the heavy Rydberg states into molecular H2+ ions, as well as into atomic fragments, both H(n = 2) and H(n = 3). Lifetimes are found to scale as n3.

Electric-field-induced g/u mixing of the E0g+(3P2) and D0u+(3P2) ion-pair states of jet-cooled I2 observed using optical triple resonance

Electric-field-induced electronic state g/u mixing of nearly isoenergetic rovibrational levels of the E0g+(3P2) and D0u+(3P2) ion-pair states of I2 has been observed using optical triple resonance combined with resonance ionization. Detectable mixing with applied fields of 1 kV/cm occurs over a range of energy level separations of < or = 0.3 cm(-1).
