Dynamic density functional theory for steady currents: Application to colloidal particles in narrow channels

Optimum transport in systems with time-dependent drive and short-ranged interactions

We consider a one-dimensional lattice gas model of hardcore particles with nearest-neighbor interaction in presence of a time-periodic external potential. We investigate how attractive or repulsive interaction affects particle transport and determine the conditions for optimum transport, i.e., the conditions for which the maximum dc particle current is achieved in the system. We find that the attractive interaction in fact hinders the transport, while the repulsive interaction generally enhances it. The net dc current is a result of the competition between the current induced by the periodic external drive and the diffusive current present in the system. When the diffusive current is negligible, particle transport in the limit of low particle density is optimized for the strongest possible repulsion. But when the particle density is large, very strong repulsion makes particle movement difficult in an overcrowded environment and, in that case, the optimal transport is obtained for somewhat weaker repulsive interaction. Our numerical simulations show reasonable agreement with our mean-field calculations. When the diffusive current is significantly large, the particle transport is still facilitated by repulsive interaction, but the conditions for optimality change. Our numerical simulations show that the optimal transport occurs at the strongest repulsive interaction for large particle density and at a weaker repulsion for small particle density.

Self-propulsion against a moving membrane: Enhanced accumulation and drag force

Self-propulsion (SP) is a main feature of active particles (AP), such as bacteria or biological micromotors, distinguishing them from passive colloids. A renowned consequence of SP is accumulation at static interfaces, even in the absence of hydrodynamic interactions. Here we address the role of SP in the interaction between AP and a moving semipermeable membrane. In particular, we implement a model of noninteracting AP in a channel crossed by a partially penetrable wall, moving at a constant velocity c. With respect to both the cases of passive colloids with c>0 and AP with c=0, the AP with finite c show enhancement of accumulation in front of the obstacle and experience a largely increased drag force. This effect is understood in terms of an effective potential localised at the interface between particles and membrane, of height proportional to cτ/ξ, where τ is the AP's reorientation time and ξ the width characterizing the surface's smoothness (ξ→0 for hard core obstacles). An approximate analytical scheme is able to reproduce the observed density profiles and the measured drag force, in very good agreement with numerical simulations. The effects discussed here can be exploited for automatic selection and filtering of AP with desired parameters.

Dynamical properties of heterogeneous nucleation of parallel hard squares

We use the Dynamic Density-Functional Formalism and the Fundamental Measure Theory as applied to a fluid of parallel hard squares to study the dynamics of heterogeneous growth of non-uniform phases with columnar and crystalline symmetries. The hard squares are (i) confined between soft repulsive walls with a square symmetry, or (ii) exposed to external potentials that mimic the presence of obstacles with circular, square, rectangular or triangular symmetries. For the first case the final equilibrium profile of a well commensurated cavity consists of a crystal phase with highly localized particles in concentric square layers at the nodes of a slightly deformed square lattice. We characterize the growth dynamics of the crystal phase by quantifying the interlayer and intralayer fluxes and the non-monotonicity of the former, the saturation time, and other dynamical quantities. The interlayer fluxes are much more monotonic in time, and dominant for poorly commensurated cavities, while the opposite is true for well commensurated cells: although smaller, the time evolution of interlayer fluxes is much more complex, presenting strongly damped oscillations which dramatically increase the saturation time. We also study how the geometry of the obstacle affects the symmetry of the final equilibrium non-uniform phase (columnar vs. crystal). For obstacles with fourfold symmetry, (circular and square) the crystal is more stable, while the columnar phase is stabilized for obstacles without this symmetry (rectangular or triangular). We find that, in general, density waves of columnar symmetry grow from the obstacle. However, additional particle localization along the wavefronts gives rise to a crystalline structure which is conserved for circular and square obstacles, but destroyed for the other two obstacles where columnar symmetry is restored.

Symmetric exclusion processes on a ring with moving defects

We study symmetric simple exclusion processes (SSEP) on a ring in the presence of uniformly moving multiple defects or disorders-a generalization of the model we proposed earlier [Phys. Rev. E 89, 022138 (2014)PLEEE81539-375510.1103/PhysRevE.89.022138]. The defects move with uniform velocity and change the particle hopping rates locally. We explore the collective effects of the defects on the spatial structure and transport properties of the system. We also introduce an SSEP with ordered sequential (sitewise) update and elucidate the close connection with our model.

Dynamic density functional theory of protein adsorption on polymer-coated nanoparticles

We present a theoretical model for the description of the adsorption kinetics of globular proteins onto charged core-shell microgel particles based on Dynamic Density Functional Theory (DDFT). This model builds on a previous description of protein adsorption thermodynamics [Yigit et al., Langmuir, 2012, 28], shown to well interpret the available calorimetric experimental data of binding isotherms. In practice, a spatially-dependent free-energy functional including the same physical interactions is built, and used to study the kinetics via a generalised diffusion equation. To test this model, we apply it to the case study of lysozyme adsorption on PNIPAM coated nanoparticles, and show that the dynamics obtained within DDFT is consistent with that extrapolated from experiments. We also perform a systematic study of the effect of various parameters in our model, and investigate the loading dynamics as a function of proteins' valence and hydrophobic adsorption energy, as well as their concentration and that of the nanoparticles. Although we concentrated here on the case of adsorption for a single protein type, the model's generality allows to study multi-component system, providing a reliable instrument for future studies of competitive and cooperative adsorption effects often encountered in protein adsorption experiments.

Interacting particles in a periodically moving potential: traveling wave and transport

We study a system of interacting particles in a periodically moving external potential, within the simplest possible description of paradigmatic symmetric exclusion process on a ring. The model describes diffusion of hardcore particles where the diffusion dynamics is locally modified at a uniformly moving defect site, mimicking the effect of the periodically moving external potential. The model, though simple, exhibits remarkably rich features in particle transport, such as polarity reversal and double peaks in particle current upon variation of defect velocity and particle density. By tuning these variables, the most efficient transport can be achieved in either direction along the ring. These features can be understood in terms of a traveling density wave propagating in the system. Our results could be experimentally tested, e.g., in a system of colloidal particles driven by a moving optical tweezer.

Dynamics of localized particles from density functional theory

A fundamental assumption of the dynamical density functional theory (DDFT) of colloidal systems is that a grand-canonical free-energy functional may be employed to generate the thermodynamic driving forces. Using one-dimensional hard rods as a model system, we analyze the validity of this key assumption and show that unphysical self-interactions of the tagged particle density fields, arising from coupling to a particle reservoir, are responsible for the excessively fast relaxation predicted by the theory. Moreover, our findings suggest that even employing a canonical functional would not lead to an improvement for many-particle systems, if only the total density is considered. We present several possible schemes to suppress these effects by incorporating tagged densities. When applied to confined systems, we demonstrate, using a simple example, that DDFT necessarily leads to delocalized tagged particle density distributions, which do not respect the fundamental geometrical constraints apparent in Brownian dynamics simulation data. The implication of these results for possible applications of DDFT to treat the glass transition are discussed.

Ratcheting of driven attracting colloidal particles: temporal density oscillations and current multiplicity

We consider the unidirectional particle transport in a suspension of colloidal particles which interact with each other via a pair potential having a hard-core repulsion plus an attractive tail. The colloids are confined within a long narrow channel and are driven along by a dc or an ac external potential. In addition, the walls of the channel interact with the particles via a ratchetlike periodic potential. We use dynamical density functional theory to compute the average particle current. In the case of dc drive, we show that as the attraction strength between the colloids is increased beyond a critical value, the stationary density distribution of the particles loses its stability leading to depinning and a time-dependent density profile. Attraction induced symmetry breaking gives rise to the coexistence of stable stationary density profiles with different spatial periods and time-periodic density profiles, each characterized by different values for the particle current.

Beyond the dynamic density functional theory for steady currents: application to driven colloidal particles in a channel

Motivated by recent studies on the dynamics of colloidal solutions in narrow channels, we consider the steady state properties of an assembly of noninteracting particles subject to the action of a traveling potential moving at a constant speed, while the solvent is modeled by a heat bath at rest in the laboratory frame. Here, since the description we propose takes into account the inertia of the colloidal particles, it is necessary to consider the evolution of both positions and momenta and study the governing equation for the one-particle phase-space distribution. First, we derive the asymptotic form of its solutions as an expansion in Hermite polynomials and their generic properties, such as the force and energy balance, and then we particularize our study to the case of an inverted parabolic potential barrier. We numerically obtain the steady state density and temperature profile and show that the expansion is rapidly convergent for large values of the friction constant and small drifting velocities. On the one hand, the present results confirm the previous studies based on the dynamic density functional theory (DDFT): On the other hand, when the friction constant is large, it display effects such as the presence of a wake behind the barrier and a strong inhomogeneity in the temperature field which are beyond the DDFT description.

Energetics of divalent selectivity in a calcium channel: the ryanodine receptor case study

A model of the ryanodine receptor (RyR) calcium channel is used to study the energetics of binding selectivity of Ca(2+) versus monovalent cations. RyR is a calcium-selective channel with a DDDD locus in the selectivity filter, similar to the EEEE locus of the L-type calcium channel. While the affinity of RyR for Ca(2+) is in the millimolar range (as opposed to the micromolar range of the L-type channel), the ease of single-channel measurements compared to L-type and its similar selectivity filter make RyR an excellent candidate for studying calcium selectivity. A Poisson-Nernst-Planck/density functional theory model of RyR is used to calculate the energetics of selectivity. Ca(2+) versus monovalent selectivity is driven by the charge/space competition mechanism in which selectivity arises from a balance of electrostatics and the excluded volume of ions in the crowded selectivity filter. While electrostatic terms dominate the selectivity, the much smaller excluded-volume term also plays a substantial role. In the D4899N and D4938N mutations of RyR that are analyzed, substantial changes in specific components of the chemical potential profiles are found far from the mutation site. These changes result in the significant reduction of Ca(2+) selectivity found in both theory and experiments.

Fundamental measure density functional theory for nonadditive hard-core mixtures: the one-dimensional case

We treat a one-dimensional binary mixture of hard-core particles that possess nonadditive diameters. For this model, a density functional theory is constructed following similar principles as an earlier extension of Rosenfeld's fundamental measure theory to three-dimensional nonadditive hard-sphere mixtures. The theory applies to arbitrary positive and moderate negative nonadditivity and reduces to Percus' exact functional in the additive case. Bulk direct correlation functions are obtained as functional derivatives of the excess free energy functional. Results for the partial pair correlation functions in bulk, as calculated via the Ornstein-Zernike route and using the direct correlation functions as input, show very good agreement with results from our Monte Carlo computer simulations of the mixture.

Density-functional theory for complex fluids

Density-functional theory (DFT) and its variations provide a fruitful approach to the computational modeling of the microscopic structures and phase behavior of soft-condensed matter. The methodology takes deep root in quantum mechanics but shares a mathematical similarity with a number of classical approaches in statistical mechanics. This review discusses different strategies commonly used to formulate the free-energy functional of complex fluids for either phenomena-oriented applications or as a generic description of the thermodynamic nonideality owing to various components of intermolecular forces. We emphasize the connections among different schemes of DFT approximations, their underlying assumptions, and inherent limitations. We also address extensions of equilibrium DFT to phenomenological theories for the dynamic properties of complex fluids and for the kinetics of phase transitions. In addition, we highlight the recent literature concerning applications of DFT to diverse static and time-dependent phenomena in complex fluids.

Dynamical density functional theory for anisotropic colloidal particles

We generalize the formalism of dynamical density functional theory for translational Brownian dynamics toward that of anisotropic colloidal particles which perform both translational and rotational Brownian motion. Using a mean-field approximation for the density functional and a Gaussian-segment model for the rod interaction, the dynamical density functional theory is then applied to a concentrated rod suspension in a confined slab geometry made by two parallel soft walls. The walls are either expanded or compressed and the relaxation behavior is investigated for an equilibrated starting configuration. We find distinctly different orientational ordering during expansion and compression. During expansion we observe preferential parallel ordering of the rods relative to the wall while during compression there is homeotropic ordering perpendicular to the wall. We find a nonexponential relaxation behavior in time. Furthermore, an external field which aligns the rods perpendicular to the walls is turned on or switched off and similar differences in the relaxational dynamics are found. Comparing the theoretical predictions to Brownian dynamics computer simulation data, we find good agreement.

Phase-space approach to dynamical density functional theory

The authors consider a system of interacting particles subjected to Langevin inertial dynamics and derive the governing time-dependent equation for the one-body density. They show that, after suitable truncations of the Bogoliubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon hierarchy, and a multiple time scale analysis, they obtain a self-consistent equation involving only the one-body density. This study extends to arbitrary dimensions previous work on a one-dimensional fluid and highlights the subtleties of kinetic theory in the derivation of dynamical density functional theory.

Dynamical correlations in Brownian hard rods

We analyze the time decay of small amplitude density perturbations in systems of highly packed Brownian hard rods, relaxing towards a uniform density distribution. The results of Brownian dynamics simulations and those of the deterministic dynamic density functional (DDF) theory, are contrasted with a new theoretical approach beyond the DDF assumptions. We characterize dynamical correlation modes which, having the lowest relaxation time, determine the late time evolution of the system. The spectrum of possible time decays has a continuous band structure, with pockets of discrete values, near the minima of the DDF results, where the validity of that theory appears to be well established.

Nonequilibrium inertial dynamics of colloidal systems

We consider the properties of a one-dimensional fluid of Brownian inertial hard-core particles, whose microscopic dynamics is partially damped by a heat bath. Direct interactions among the particles are represented as binary, instantaneous elastic collisions. Collisions with the heat bath are accounted for by a Fokker-Planck collision operator, whereas direct collisions among the particles are treated by a well known method of kinetic theory, the revised Enskog theory. By means of a time multiple time-scale method we derive the evolution equation for the average density. Remarkably, for large values of the friction parameter and/or of the mass of the particles we obtain the same equation as the one derived within the dynamic density functional theory (DDF). In addition, at moderate values of the friction constant, the present method allows to study the inertial effects not accounted for by DDF method. Finally, a numerical test of these corrections is provided.

Microscopic derivation of time-dependent density functional methods

Time-dependent density functional methods (TDDFM) are studied from the microscopic viewpoint using projection operator methods in classical liquids. A density field is defined without averaging, so that a time evolution equation of the density field is derived with a random force. The derived equation includes a free energy functional, which is different from that defined in the TDDFM. The projection operator method provides the exact expression of the free energy functional. Another definition of the density field by an average leads to the equation of the TDDFM. In addition, an equation describing fluctuations is also derived.

Dynamical density functional theory and its application to spinodal decomposition

We present an alternative derivation of the dynamical density functional theory for the one-body density profile of a classical fluid developed by Marconi and Tarazona [J. Chem. Phys. 110, 8032 (1999)]. Our derivation elucidates further some of the physical assumptions inherent in the theory and shows that it is not restricted to fluids composed of particles interacting solely via pair potentials; rather it applies to general, multibody interactions. The starting point for our derivation is the Smoluchowski equation and the theory is therefore one for Brownian particles and as such is applicable to colloidal fluids. In the second part of this paper we use the dynamical density functional theory to derive a theory for spinodal decomposition that is applicable at both early and intermediate times. For early stages of spinodal decomposition our nonlinear theory is equivalent to the (generalized) linear Cahn-Hilliard theory, but for later times it incorporates coupling between different Fourier components of the density fluctuations (modes) and therefore goes beyond Cahn-Hilliard theory. We describe the results of calculations for a model (Yukawa) fluid which show that the coupling leads to the growth of a second maximum in the density fluctuations, at a wave number larger than that of the main peak.

Dynamic density functional study of a driven colloidal particle in polymer solutions

The dynamic density functional (DDF) theory and standard Brownian dynamics simulations (BDS) are used to study the drifting effects of a colloidal particle in a polymer solution, both for ideal and interacting polymers. The structure of the stationary density distributions and the total induced current are analyzed for different drifting rates. We find good agreement with the BDS, which gives support to the assumptions of the DDF theory. The qualitative aspect of the density distribution are discussed and compared to recent results for driven colloids in one-dimensional channels and to analytical expansions for the ideal solution limit.
