Ion pairing in model electrolytes: A study via three-particle correlation functions

Electrostatic Correlation Induced Ion Condensation and Charge Inversion in Multivalent Electrolytes

The study of the electrical double layer lies at the heart of colloidal and interfacial science. The standard mean-field Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) theory is incapable of modeling many phenomena originating from ion correlation. An important example is charge inversion or overcharging of electrical double layers in multivalent electrolyte solutions. Existing theories aiming to include correlations cannot capture the non-monotonic dependence of charge inversion on salt concentration because they have not systematically accounted for the inhomogeneous nature of correlations from surface to the bulk and the excluded volume effect of ions and solvent molecules. In this work, we modify the Gaussian renormalized fluctuation theory by including the excluded volume effect to study ion condensation and charge inversion. A boundary layer approach is developed to accurately model the giant difference in ion correlations between the condensed layer near the surface and the diffuse layer outside. The theory is used to study charge inversion in multivalent electrolytes and their mixtures. We predict a surface charge induced formation of a three-dimensional condensed layer, which is necessary but not sufficient for charge inversion. The value of the effective surface potential is found to depend non-monotonically on the bulk salt concentration. Our results also show a non-monotonic reduction in charge inversion in monovalent and multivalent electrolyte mixtures. Our work is the first to qualitatively reproduce experimental and simulation observations and explains the underlying physics.

High aspect ratio nanotubes assembled from macrocyclic iminium salts

One-dimensional nanostructures such as carbon nanotubes and actin filaments rely on strong and directional interactions to stabilize their high aspect ratio shapes. This requirement has precluded making isolated, long, thin organic nanotubes by stacking molecular macrocycles, as their noncovalent stacking interactions are generally too weak. Here we report high aspect ratio (>10³), lyotropic nanotubes of stacked, macrocyclic, iminium salts, which are formed by protonation of the corresponding imine-linked macrocycles. Iminium ion formation establishes cohesive interactions that, in organic solvent (tetrahydrofuran), are two orders of magnitude stronger than the neutral macrocycles, as explained by physical arguments and demonstrated by molecular dynamics simulations. Nanotube formation stabilizes the iminium ions, which otherwise rapidly hydrolyze, and is reversed and restored upon addition of bases and acids. Acids generated by irradiating a photoacid generator or sonicating chlorinated solvents also induced nanotube assembly, allowing these nanostructures to be coupled to diverse stimuli, and, once assembled, they can be fixed permanently by cross-linking their pendant alkenes. As large macrocyclic chromonic liquid crystals, these iminium salts are easily accessible through a modular design and provide a means to rationally synthesize structures that mimic the morphology and rheology of carbon nanotubes and biological tubules.

Outsized Amplitude-Modulated Structure of Very-Long-Range Charge Inversions in Model Colloidal Dispersions

Most theoretical and simulation studies on charged suspensions are at infinite dilution and are focused on the electrolyte structure around one or two isolated particles. Some classic experimental studies with latex particle solutions exhibit interesting phenomenology which imply very-long-range correlations. Here, we apply an integral equation theory to a model charged macroion suspension, at finite volume fraction, and find an amplitude-modulated charge inversion structure, with outsized amplitudes and of very-long-range extension. These inversions are different from the standard charge inversions in that they occur at finite macroions' volume fraction, far away from the central macroion, are outsized, and increase, not decrease, with increasing particle charge and distance to the central particle, which is indicative of long-range correlations. We find our results to be in agreement with our Monte Carlo simulations and qualitatively consistent with existing experimental results.

Stability mechanisms for plate-like nanoparticles immersed in a macroion dispersion

An integral equation theory and Monte Carlo simulations are applied to study a model macroion solution confined between two parallel plates immersed in a 1:1 electrolyte and the macroions' counterions. We analyze the cases in which plates are: (a) uncharged; (b) when they are like-charged to the macroions; (c) when they are oppositely charged to the macroions. For all cases a long range oscillatory behavior of the induced charge density between the plates is found (implying an overcompensation/undercompensation of the plates' charge density) and a correlation between the confined and outside fluids. The behavior of the force is discussed in terms of the macroion and ion structure inside and outside the plates. A good agreement is found between theoretical and simulation results.

Electrolyte distribution around two like-charged rods: Their effective attractive interaction and angular dependent charge reversal

A simple model for two like-charged parallel rods immersed in an electrolyte solution is considered. We derived the three point extension (TPE) of the hypernetted chain/mean spherical approximation (TPE-HNC/MSA) and Poisson-Boltzmann (TPE-PB) integral equations. We numerically solve these equations and compare them to our results of Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. The effective interaction force, F(T), the charge distribution profiles, rho(el)(x,y), and the angular dependent integrated charge function, P(theta), are calculated for this system. The analysis of F(T) is carried out in terms of the electrostatic and entropic (depletion) contributions, F(E) and F(C). We studied several cases of monovalent and divalent electrolytes, for which the ionic size and concentration are varied. We find good qualitative agreement between TPE-HNC/MSA and MC in all the cases studied. The rod-rod force is found to be attractive when immersed in large size, monovalent or divalent electrolytes. In general, the TPE-PB has poor agreement with the MC. For large monovalent and divalent electrolytes, we find angular dependent charge reversal charge inversion and polarizability. We discuss the intimate relationship between this angular dependent charge reversal and rod-rod attraction.

Molecular multivalent electrolytes: microstructure and screening lengths

We study small rod-like molecular electrolytes solutions with their corresponding atomic counterions. The asymptotic length scales (decay length and wavelength) of the structural correlations are analyzed using the formalism of the dressed interaction site theory (DIST). The correlation functions are determined using the reference interaction site model equation complemented with a mixed approach in which the hypernetted-chain closure is used for the repulsive interactions, and the mean spherical approximation is used for the attractive interactions. The results from this scheme are in good agreement with the Monte Carlo computer simulations reported here. The asymptotic properties of the correlation functions of this molecular system are compared against those corresponding to two related simple (atomic) electrolyte models. The main conclusion is that the molecular structure of the ions lowers by two orders of magnitude the concentration at which the transition from monotonic to oscillatory decay occurs.
