Conformationally induced vibronic transitions in S0←S1 spectra of n-propylbenzene

Exploring short intramolecular interactions in alkylaromatic substrates

From proteins and peptides to semiconducting polymers, aliphatic chains on aromatic groups are recurring motifs in macromolecules from very diverse application fields. Fields in which molecular folding and packing determine the macroscopic physical properties that make such advanced materials appealing in the first place. Within each macromolecule, the intrinsic structure of each unit defines how it interacts with its neighbours, ultimately opening up or denying certain backbone conformations. This eventually also determines how macromolecules interact with each other. This account deals specifically with the conformational problem of many common alkylaromatic units, examining the features of an intramolecular interaction involving a side chain with as few as three methylene groups. A set of 23 model compounds featuring an intramolecular interaction between an aliphatic X-H (X = C, N, O, and S) bond and an aromatic ring was considered. Quantitative computational analysis was made possible, thanks to complete basis set extrapolated CCSD(T) calculations and NCI topological analysis, the latter of which revealed an elaborate network of dispersive and steric interactions leading to somewhat unintuitive and unexpected results, such as the higher energetic stability of certain twisted conformational isomers over those with extended side chains. Vicinal covalent effects from polarizing groups and various heteroatoms, along with the occurrence of non-dispersive phenomena, were also investigated. The conclusions drawn from the investigation include a comprehensive set of guidelines intended to aid in the prediction of the most stable conformation for this class of building blocks. Our findings affect a variety of different research fields, including the tailoring of functional materials for organic electronics and photovoltaics, with insights into a rational treatment of conformational disorder, and the study of protein- and peptide-folding preferences, putting an emphasis on peculiar interactions between the backbone and aromatic residues.

The CH/π hydrogen bond in chemistry. Conformation, supramolecules, optical resolution and interactions involving carbohydrates

The CH/π hydrogen bond is an attractive molecular force occurring between a soft acid and a soft base. Contribution from the dispersion energy is important in typical cases where aliphatic or aromatic CH groups are involved. Coulombic energy is of minor importance as compared to the other weak hydrogen bonds. The hydrogen bond nature of this force, however, has been confirmed by AIM analyses. The dual characteristic of the CH/π hydrogen bond is the basis for ubiquitous existence of this force in various fields of chemistry. A salient feature is that the CH/π hydrogen bond works cooperatively. Another significant point is that it works in nonpolar as well as polar, protic solvents such as water. The interaction energy depends on the nature of the molecular fragments, CH as well as π-groups: the stronger the proton donating ability of the CH group, the larger the stabilizing effect. This Perspective focuses on the consequence of this molecular force in the conformation of organic compounds and supramolecular chemistry. Implication of the CH/π hydrogen bond extends to the specificity of molecular recognition or selectivity in organic reactions, polymer science, surface phenomena and interactions involving proteins. Many problems, unsettled to date, will become clearer in the light of the CH/π paradigm.

Impact of Extended π Conjugation on Methyl Rotor-Induced IVR in Aromatic Molecules

Laser-induced fluorescence excitation and resolved fluorescence spectra following excitations of the single vibronic levels (SVL) of p-vinyltoluene (p-VT) and p-vinylfluorobenzene (p-VFB) have been measured in a seeded supersonic free-jet expansion. A complete vibronic assignment of the fluorescence spectrum measured following excitation of the 0(0)0-band of p-VT has been presented. Normal vibrational modes in the S0 and S1 states of the molecule have been calculated by CASSCF method, and the correlation between the two set of modes is made by expressing the excited-state normal modes in terms of those of the ground state. The calculations predict that in the excited state methyl and vinyl torsional motions of p-VT are extensively mixed with many of the out-of-plane modes of the aromatic ring. Our resolved fluorescence spectral data measured following SVL excitations essentially agree with such predictions. In the excited state, the molecule exhibits a dramatically low threshold for the rotor-induced IVR in a supersonic jet expansion. Several mechanisms have been discussed to explain the phenomenon.

Conformational effects on vibronic spectra and excited state dynamics of 3-fluorobenzoic acid dimer

Two conformational isomers of 3-fluorobenzoic acid dimer (3-FBA(2)) have been identified in a supersonic jet expansion by use of laser-induced fluorescence excitation (FE), UV-UV hole-burning, and dispersed fluorescence (DF) spectroscopic methods. In the FE spectrum, the S(1) origins of the two isomeric species appear at a frequency gap of only 24 cm(-1), and the vibronic intensities of the redshifted dimer (dimer I) are about two times weaker than those of dimer II. However, ab initio quantum chemistry calculations at the MP2/6-31G(**) level of theory predict that all the isomeric species of 3-FBA(2) have almost the same binding energy (approximately 17 kcal/mol) in the ground state. Furthermore, unlike benzoic acid dimer, the present system shows intense activity for a low-frequency mode in both the FE and DF spectra. With the aid of DFT (B3LYP/6-311G(**)) predicted normal mode frequencies, we have assigned the mode to the in-plane gear (cogwheel) vibration of the cyclic hydrogen-bonded frame of the dimer. The Franck-Condon profiles for vibronic excitation of the mode indicate that the distortion of the cyclic hydrogen bond frame as a result of S(1)<--S(0) excitation is larger for dimer I than dimer II. Moreover, the fluorescence lifetime at the S(1) zero-point level of the former is also significantly smaller than the latter. Using the predictions of configuration interaction singles calculations, we have proposed that the spectral and dynamical differences between the two isomeric species observed in this study are manifestations of the different characteristics of their S(1) surfaces. By measuring FE, DF, and hole-burning spectra of a mixed dimer between 3-fluobenzoic acid and benzoic acid we have shown that the isomeric features in the homodimer spectra are due to two locally excited rotamers of the 3-fluorobenzoic acid moiety.

Reactivity and Structure of the 5-Dehydro-m-xylylene Anion

The electronic structure of dehydro-m-xylylene anion (DMX-) has been investigated by using chemical reactivity studies and electronic structure calculations. DMX- has been generated in the gas phase via the sequential reaction of trimethyl-3,5-bis(trimethylsilylmethyl)phenylsilane with F- and two molecules of F2. Reactivity and thermochemical properties of the ion indicate a phenyl-like anion (1a), consistent with theoretical predictions. Density functional calculations predict a nonplanar triplet anion, with an allenic singlet anion slightly higher in energy. The driving force for the out-of-plane distortion is more efficient charge delocalization that is achieved at lower symmetry.
