Experimental evidence for the 7,7,8,8-tetracyano-p-quinodimethane dianion in vacuo

Photophysics and Inverted Solvatochromism of 7,7,8,8-Tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ)

We report absorption, fluorescence, and Raman spectroscopy of 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) in a variety of solvents. The fluorescence quantum yields (QYs) of linear alkane solutions are similar to one another, but QY is shown to acutely decrease in other solvents with increasing polarities. The slope of the solvatochromic plot of absorption maxima is inverted from negative to positive with an increase in solvent polarity. A significant change in the frequency of carbon-carbon double bond stretching modes is not observed in Raman spectra of TCNQ in different solvents. The molar absorption coefficient is determined to calculate the oscillator strength of the absorption band. The radiative decay rate constant calculated from the oscillator strength is approximately ten times larger than that elucidated from the fluorescence lifetime and QY. These spectroscopic parameters reveal that the relaxation occurs from a Franck-Condon excited state to a distinct fluorescence emissive state with a smaller transition dipole moment.

Laser Spectroscopy and Lifetime Measurements of the S1 State of Tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) in a Cold Gas-Phase Free-Jet

The S₁ electronic state of 7,7,8,8-Tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) has been investigated by laser induced fluorescence (LIF), dispersed fluorescence (DF) spectroscopy, and lifetime measurements under jet-cooled conditions in the gas-phase. The LIF spectrum showed a weak origin band at 412.13 nm (24262 cm^-1 ) with prominent progression and combination bands involving vibrations of 327, 1098, and 2430 cm^-1 . In addition, very strong bands appeared at ∼363.6 nm (3300 cm^-1 above the origin). Both the LIF and DF spectra indicate considerable geometric change in the S₁ state. The fluorescence lifetime of S₁ at zero-point level was obtained to be 220 ns. This lifetime is 40 times longer than the radiative lifetime estimated from the S₁ -S₀ oscillator strength. Furthermore, the lifetimes of the vibronic bands exhibited drastic energy dependence, indicating a strong mixing with the triplet (T₁ ) or intramolecular charge-transfer (CT) state. This study is thought to disclose intrinsic nature of TCNQ, which has been well known as a component of organic semiconductors and a versatile p-type dopant.

Collisional electron transfer to photoexcited acceptor radical anions

In this article, we show that photoexcitation of radical anions facilitates electron transfer from sodium atoms in femtosecond encounters. Thus, excitation of 7,7,8,8-tetracyano-p-quinodimethane (TCNQ) and fluorinated TCNQ (TCNQ-F(4)) anions to the second optically active state at 478 nm led to increases in the yields of dianions of about 20% and 10%, respectively. Photoexcitation with a nanosecond-long laser pulse was done a few microseconds before the ions entered the sodium collision cell so that none of the ions would be in any of the initially reached doublet-excited states. We suggest an explanation for the higher electron capture cross section based on the formation of long-lived quartet state anions. Excitation of TCNQ anions within the lowest-energy absorption band, where there are no accessible quartet states, led instead to a lower yield of dianions. There are at least three explanations for the lower dianion yields: (1) Depletion of the monoanion beam due to photodetachment after the absorption of minimum two photons; (2) Formation of short-lived vibrationally excited dianions that decay by electron autodetachment prior to identification; and (3) Lower electron capture cross sections of vibrationally excited monoanions. Similar losses in dianion signal can occur at 478 nm so the actual yield of dianions at this wavelength due to the population of quartet states is therefore greater than that observed. Our methodology devises a more efficient route for the production of molecular dianions, and at the same time it may provide information on long-lived electronic states.

Small gas-phase dianions produced by sputtering and gas flooding

We have extended our previous experiment [Schauer et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 65, 625 (1990)] where we had produced small gas-phase dianion clusters of C(n) (2-)(n > or =7) by means of sputtering a graphite surface by Cs(+) ion bombardment. Our detection sensitivity for small C(n) (2-) could now be increased by a factor of about 50 for odd n. Nevertheless, a search for the elusive pentamer dianion of C(5) (2-) was not successful. As an upper limit, the sputtered flux of C(5) (2-) must be at least a factor of 5000 lower than that of C(7) (2-), provided that the lifetime of C(5) (2-) is sufficiently long to allow its detection by mass spectrometry. When oxygen gas (flooding with either O(2) or with N(2)O) was supplied to the Cs(+)-bombarded graphite surface, small dianions of OC(n) (2-)(5< or =n < or =14) and O(2)C(7) (2-) were observed in addition to C(n) (2-)(n > or =7). Similarly, Cs(+) sputtering of graphite with simultaneous SF(6) gas flooding produced SC(n) (2-)(6< or =n< or =18). Mixed nitrogen-carbon or fluorine-carbon dianion clusters could not be observed by these means. Attempts to detect mixed metal-fluoride dianions for SF(6) gas flooding of various Cs(+)-bombarded metal surfaces were successful for the case of Zr, where metastable ZrF(6) (2-) was observed. Cs(+) bombardment of a silicon carbide (SiC) wafer produced SiC(n) (2-) (n=6,8,10). When oxygen gas was supplied to the Cs(+)-bombarded SiC surface, small dianions of SiOC(n) (2-) (n=4,6,8) and of SiO(2)C(n) (2-) (n=4,6) as well as a heavier unidentified dianion (at mz=98.5) were observed. For toluene (C(7)H(8)) vapor flooding of a Cs(+)-bombarded graphite surface, several hydrocarbon dianion clusters of C(n)H(m) (2-)(n> or =7) were produced in addition to C(n) (2-)(n> or =7), while smaller C(n)H(m) (2-) with n< or =6 could not be observed. BeC(n) (2-) (n=4,6,8,10), Be(2)C(6) (2-), as well as BeC(8)H(m) (2-) (with m=2 and/or m=1) were observed for toluene vapor flooding of a Cs(+)-bombarded beryllium metal foil. The metastable pentamer (9)Be(12)C(4) (2-) at mz=28.5 was the smallest and lightest dianion molecule that we could detect. The small dianion clusters of SC(n) (2-), OC(n) (2-), BeC(n) (2-), and SiO(m)C(n) (2-) (m=0,1,2) have different abundance patterns. A resemblance exists between the abundance patterns of BeC(n) (2-) and SiC(n) (2-), even though calculated molecular structures of BeC(6) (2-) and SiC(6) (2-) are different. The abundance pattern of SC(n) (2-) is fairly similar to that of C(n) (2-).
