Dynamic light scattering in liquid and supercooled diphenylmethane

Absorption of pressurized methane in normal and supercooled p-xylene revealed via high-resolution neutron imaging

Supercooling of liquids leads to peculiarities which are scarcely studied under high-pressure conditions. Here, we report the surface tension, solubility, diffusivity, and partial molar volume for normal and supercooled liquid solutions of methane with p-xylene. Liquid bodies of perdeuterated p-xylene (p-C₈D₁₀), and, for comparison, o-xylene (o-C₈D₁₀), were exposed to pressurized methane (CH₄, up to 101 bar) at temperatures ranging 7.0-30.0 °C and observed at high spatial resolution (pixel size 20.3 μm) using a non-tactile neutron imaging method. Supercooling led to the increase of diffusivity and partial molar volume of methane. Solubility and surface tension were insensitive to supercooling, the latter substantially depended on methane pressure. Overall, neutron imaging enabled to reveal and quantify multiple phenomena occurring in supercooled liquid p-xylene solutions of methane under pressures relevant to the freeze-out in the production of liquefied natural gas.

Translation-orientation coupling and Cox-Merz rule of liquid hexane

Equilibrium and non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are performed on liquid hexane in order to clarify the origin of the Cox-Merz rule of liquids composed of chain-like molecules. The relation between the frequency-dependent complex shear viscosity and the shear-rate dependent nonlinear viscosity follows the Cox-Merz rule as expected. The slowest viscoelastic relaxation mode is explained by the translation-orientation coupling mechanism, and the saturation of the shear-induced orientational order is observed in the non-equilibrium simulation at the onset of the shear thinning. The origin of the Cox-Merz rule is discussed in terms of the translation-orientation coupling.

Light-scattering study of vibrational relaxation in liquid xylenes

Brillouin spectra obtained in dynamic light-scattering experiments are reported for the three isomeric xylenes (ortho-, meta-, and paradimethylbenzenes) between 288 and 363 K. Limiting sound velocities and relaxation times, as obtained from the polarized spectra using the theory developed by Mountain [J. Res. Natl. Bur. Stand. 70A, 207 (1966)], reveal the existence of a relaxation process. Our results suggest that the relaxation process in liquid xylenes has a purely vibrational nature. Vibrational-translational energy exchanges in xylenes are analyzed in terms of available molecular models and compared to those previously obtained for toluene and benzene. The results presented here confirm the important role played by the molecular geometry in the vibrational relaxation process, as the relative arrangement of the methyl groups has significant effect in determining the relaxing vibrational modes.
