Theoretical study of the He–HF+ complex. II. Rovibronic states from coupled diabatic potential energy surfaces

State-to-state rovibrational transition rates for CO2 in the bend mode in collisions with He atoms

Modeling environments that are not in local thermal equilibrium, such as protoplanetary disks or planetary atmospheres, with molecular spectroscopic data from space telescopes requires knowledge of the rate coefficients of rovibrationally inelastic molecular collisions. Here, we present such rate coefficients in a temperature range from 10 to 500 K for collisions of CO2 with He atoms in which CO2 is (de)excited in the bend mode. They are obtained from numerically exact coupled-channel (CC) calculations as well as from calculations with the less demanding coupled-states approximation (CSA) and the vibrational close-coupling rotational infinite-order sudden (VCC-IOS) method. All of the calculations are based on a newly calculated accurate ab initio four-dimensional CO2-He potential surface including the CO2 bend (ν2) mode. We find that the rovibrationally inelastic collision cross sections and rate coefficients from the CSA and VCC-IOS calculations agree to within 50% with the CC results at the rotational state-to-state level, except for the smaller ones and in the low energy resonance region, and to within 20% for the overall vibrational quenching rates except for temperatures below 50 K where resonances provide a substantial contribution. Our CC quenching rates agree with the most recent experimental data within the error bars. We also compared our results with data from Clary et al. calculated in the 1980s with the CSA [A. J. Banks and D. C. Clary, J. Chem. Phys. 86, 802 (1987)] and VCC-IOS [D. C. Clary, J. Chem. Phys. 78, 4915 (1983)] methods and a simple atom-atom model potential based on ab initio Hartree-Fock calculations and found that their cross sections agree fairly well with ours for collision energies above 500 cm-1, but that the inclusion of long range attractive dispersion interactions is crucial to obtain reliable cross sections at lower energies and rate coefficients at lower temperatures.

Ab Initio Treatment of the Chemical Reaction Precursor Complex Br(2P)−HCN. 2. Bound-State Calculations and Infrared Spectra

Rovibronic energy levels and properties of the Br(2P)-HCN complex were obtained from three-dimensional calculations, with HCN kept linear and the CN bond frozen. All diabatic states that correlate to the 2P3/2 and 2P1/2 states of the Br atom were included and spin-orbit coupling was taken into account. The 3 x 3 matrix of diabatic potential surfaces was taken from the preceding paper (paper 1). In agreement with experiment, we found two linear isomers, Br-NCH and Br-HCN. The calculated binding energies are very similar: D0 = 352.4 cm(-1) and D0 = 349.1 cm(-1), respectively. We established, also in agreement with experiment, that the ground electronic state of Br-NCH has |Omega| = (1/2) and that Br-HCN has a ground state with |Omega| = (3/2), where the quantum number, Omega, is the projection of the total angular momentum, J, of the complex on the intermolecular axis R. This picture can be understood as being caused by the electrostatic interaction between the quadrupole of the Br(2P) atom and the dipole of HCN, combined with the very strong spin-orbit coupling in Br. We predicted the frequencies of the van der Waals modes of both isomers and found a direct Renner-Teller splitting of the bend mode in Br-HCN and a smaller, indirect, splitting in Br-NCH. The red shift of the CH stretch frequency in the complex, relative to free HCN, was calculated to be 1.98 cm(-1) for Br-NCH and 23.11 cm(-1) for Br-HCN, in good agreement with the values measured in helium nanodroplets. Finally, with the use of the same potential surfaces, we modeled the Cl(2P)-HCN complex and found that the experimentally observed linear Cl-NCH isomer is considerably more stable than the (not observed) Cl-HCN isomer. This was explained mainly as an effect of the substantially smaller spin-orbit coupling in Cl, relative to Br.

Near-Threshold Inelastic Collisions Using Molecular Beams with a Tunable Velocity

Molecular scattering behavior has generally proven difficult to study at low collision energies. We formed a molecular beam of OH radicals with a narrow velocity distribution and a tunable absolute velocity by passing the beam through a Stark decelerator. The transition probabilities for inelastic scattering of the OH radicals with Xe atoms were measured as a function of the collision energy in the range of 50 to 400 wavenumbers, with an overall energy resolution of about 13 wavenumbers. The behavior of the cross-sections for inelastic scattering near the energetic thresholds was accurately measured, and excellent agreement was obtained with cross-sections derived from coupled-channel calculations on ab initio computed potential energy surfaces.
