Abstract
We synthesized a series of four parent aza-β-ketoiminate organoboron complexes and performed spectroscopic studies using both experimental and computational techniques. We studied how benzannulation influences the vibronic structure of the UV/Vis absorption bands with a focus on the bright lowest-energy π → π* electronic excitation. Theoretical simulations, accounting for inhomogeneous broadening effects using different embedding schemes, allowed gaining in-depth insights into the observed differences in band shapes induced by structural modifications. We observed huge variations in the distributions of vibronic transitions depending on the position of benzannulation. By and large, the harmonic approximation combined with the adiabatic hessian model delivers qualitatively correct band shapes for the one-photon absorption spectra, except in one case. We also assessed the importance of non-Condon effects (accounted for by the linear term in Herzberg-Teller expansion of the dipole moment) for S0 → S1 band shapes. It turned out that non-Condon contributions have no effect on the band shape in one-photon absorption spectra. In contrast, these effects significantly change the Franck-Condon band shapes of the two-photon absorption spectra. For one of the studied organoboron complexes we also performed a preliminary exploration of mechanical anharmonicity, resulting in an increase of the intensity of the 0-0 transition, which improves the agreement with the experimental data compared to the harmonic model.

Abstract
The equilibrium structures, multidimensional potential energy surfaces, and anharmonic vibrational frequencies of thioformaldehyde (H2CS) and its 2B1 radical anion were obtained at the (U)CCSD(T)-F12a/cc-pVTZ-F12 level; and the photoelectron spectrum of H2CS-X∼2B1→ H2CS X∼1A1 was simulated by calculating the Franck-Condon factors (FCFs). The additional electrons cause a significant change in the bond length of the C = S bond of H2CS, which affects the potential energy surface and the C = S bond stretching mode, while the interaction between electrons turns the originally planar structure of H2CS into a slightly out-of-plane umbrella structure, resulting in an unusual change in the vibrational frequency of the out-of-plane bending mode. Finally, a time-independent eigenstate-free Raman wave function approach (RWF) was used to calculate the photoelectron spectrum of H2CS and to point out the changes in the band under the influence of different temperatures. These data provides a theoretical basis for interstellar observations and experimental studies.

Abstract
In this Communication, we study the effect of spurious oscillations in the profiles of energy derivatives with respect to nuclear coordinates calculated with density functional approximations (DFAs) for formaldehyde, pyridine, and furan in their ground and electronic excited states. These spurious oscillations, which can only be removed using extensive integration grids that increase enormously the CPU cost of DFA calculations, are significant in the case of third- and fourth-order energy derivatives of the ground and excited states computed by M06-2X and ωB97X functionals. The errors in question propagate to anharmonic vibronic spectra computed under the Franck-Condon approximation, i.e., positions and intensities of vibronic transitions are affected to a large extent (shifts as significant as hundreds of cm-1 were observed). On the other hand, the LC-BLYP and CAM-B3LYP functionals show a much less pronounced effect due to spurious oscillations. Based on the results presented herein, we recommend either LC-BLYP or CAM-B3LYP with integration grids (250, 974) (or larger) for numerically stable simulations of vibronic spectra including anharmonic effects.

Abstract
We constructed a hybrid model of harmonic and anharmonic oscillators to compute Franck-Condon factors and interpret the photoelectron spectrum of methylketene. The equilibrium structures of methylketene and its cation were optimized, and then, the harmonic and anharmonic vibrational frequencies were computed using the B3LYP, PBE0, APFD, and ωB97XD approaches of the density functional theory. The photoelectron spectrum of methylketene was simulated by computing the Franck-Condon factors with both the harmonic and hybrid models. The adiabatic ionization energy of methylketene was computed by using the CCSD(T) approach extrapolating to the complete basis set limit. The simulated photoelectron spectra are consistent with those from the experiment for both the harmonic and hybrid models. However, the error in band positions is reduced by using the hybrid model. The computed adiabatic ionization energies of methylketene are in agreement with the experiment, with the smallest error being 0.017 eV. Our interpretation based on the theoretical spectrum led to the reassignment of the experimental photoelectron spectrum of methylketene.

Abstract
The results of electronic and vibrational structure simulations are an invaluable support for interpreting experimental absorption/emission spectra, which stimulates the development of reliable and cost-effective computational protocols. In this work, we contribute to these efforts and propose an efficient first-principle protocol for simulating vibrationally-resolved absorption spectra, including nonempirical estimations of the inhomogeneous broadening. To this end, we analyze three key aspects: (i) a metric-based selection of density functional approximation (DFA) so to benefit from the computational efficiency of time-dependent density function theory (TD-DFT) while safeguarding the accuracy of the vibrationally-resolved spectra, (ii) an assessment of two vibrational structure schemes (vertical gradient and adiabatic Hessian) to compute the Franck-Condon factors, and (iii) the use of machine learning to speed up nonempirical estimations of the inhomogeneous broadening. In more detail, we predict the absorption band shapes for a set of 20 medium-sized fluorescent dyes, focusing on the bright ππ★ S0 → S1 transition and using experimental results as references. We demonstrate that, for the studied 20-dye set which includes structures with large structural variability, the preselection of DFAs based on an easily accessible metric ensures accurate band shapes with respect to the reference approach and that range-separated functionals show the best performance when combined with the vertical gradient model. As far as band widths are concerned, we propose a new machine-learning-based approach for determining the inhomogeneous broadening induced by the solvent microenvironment. This approach is shown to be very robust offering inhomogeneous broadenings with errors as small as 2 cm-1 with respect to genuine electronic-structure calculations, with a total CPU time reduced by 98%.

Abstract
Molecular electronic spectra can be represented in the time domain as auto-correlation functions of the initial vibrational wavepacket. We present a derivation of the harmonic vibrational auto-correlation function that is valid for both real and imaginary harmonic frequencies. The derivation rests on Lie algebra techniques that map otherwise complicated exponential operator arithmetic to simpler matrix formulae. The expressions for the zero- and finite-temperature harmonic auto-correlation functions have been carefully structured both to be free of branch-cut discontinuities and to remain numerically stable with finite-precision arithmetic. Simple extensions correct the harmonic Franck-Condon approximation for the lowest-order anharmonic and Herzberg-Teller effects. Quantitative simulations are shown for several examples, including the electronic absorption spectra of F2, HOCl, CH2NH, and NO2.

Abstract
Simulating vibrationally resolved electronic spectra of anharmonic systems, especially those involving double-well potential energy surfaces, often requires expensive quantum dynamics methods. Here, we explore the applicability and limitations of the recently proposed single-Hessian thawed Gaussian approximation for the simulation of spectra of systems with double-well potentials, including 1,2,4,5-tetrafluorobenzene, ammonia, phosphine, and arsine. This semiclassical wavepacket approach is shown to be more robust and to provide more accurate spectra than the conventional harmonic approximation. Specifically, we identify two cases in which the Gaussian wavepacket method is especially useful due to the breakdown of the harmonic approximation: (i) when the nuclear wavepacket is initially at the top of the potential barrier but delocalized over both wells, e.g., along a low-frequency mode, and (ii) when the wavepacket has enough energy to classically go over the low potential energy barrier connecting the two wells. The method is efficient and requires only a single classical ab initio molecular dynamics trajectory, in addition to the data required to compute the harmonic spectra. We also present an improved algorithm for computing the wavepacket autocorrelation function, which guarantees that the evaluated correlation function is continuous for arbitrary size of the time step.

Abstract
The S1 ← S0 electronic transition of perylene bisimide (PBI) and its binary aggregates were investigated using a combination of helium nanodroplet isolation spectroscopy and computational methods. First, well-resolved vibronic bands of the PBI monomer obtained under the superfluid helium nanodroplet environment were compared to simulated vibronic spectra with anharmonic corrections of the band positions. Second, about ten sets of weaker vibronic bands were observed, which show similar vibronic patterns as that of the PBI monomer and have their band origins red-shifted by about 8 to 218 cm-1. Experimental Poisson curve analyses, performed at the origins of these new sets of bands and the PBI monomer, indicate that the carriers of these weaker red-shifted vibronic bands are binary adducts of PBI. Three types of PBI dimer structures where the electronic transition dipole moments of the two subunits are perpendicular to each other were proposed as possible carriers of these red-shifted vibronic patterns. Extensive vibronic simulations were carried out in a multi-step procedure with TD-DFT, vertical Hessian, and finally adiabatic Hessian approaches. Small red-shifted band origins and very similar vibronic patterns to that of the monomer were predicted for unusual, T-shaped, type I dimer structures and are in close agreement with the experimental data. The combined experimental and theoretical results indicate that the helium nanodroplet environment enables the formation of these unusual T-shaped dimers and stabilizes them.

Abstract
The absorption and fluorescence spectra of 4-(3-methoxybenzylidene)-2-methyl-oxazalone (m-MeOBDI) dissolved in neutral, acidic, and basic solvent environments have been investigated and assigned by using Franck-Condon (FC) simulations at the quantum TDDFT level. Four different structures of m-MeOBDI in the ground and excited states are optimized and are found to be responsible for the observed absorption and fluorescence spectra. The (absorption) fluorescence of m-MeOBDI in pure methanol and neutral/basic methanol/water (1/9 vol) mixed solvent is found to arise from the (ground neutral N-I) excited neutral N-I* and cationic C-III* species, respectively. In acidic solvent, the absorption is found to arise from ground acidic C-II species, and the excited divalent cation DC-IV* is found to be formed in its excited state due to the excess H+ in the solution, and then it emits ∼560 nm fluorescence. FC simulations have also been employed to confirm our assignments as well as interpret the vibronic band profiles. As expected, the simulated emission spectrum of the divalent cationic species is in good agreement with the experimental observation. Therefore, within the present FC simulation, the observed absorption and fluorescence spectra have been reasonably interpreted and novel fluorescence mechanisms of m-MeOBDI in various pH solvent environments have been proposed.

Abstract
Extremely solvent-enhanced absorption and fluorescence spectra of carbazole were investigated by performing a generalized multi-set damped Franck-Condon spectral simulation. Experimental absorption and fluorescence spectra of carbazole in the gas phase were first well reproduced by performing an un-damped Franck-Condon simulation, but a one-set scaling damped Franck-Condon simulation severely underestimated the intensities of the peaks of experimental absorption and fluorescence spectra of carbazole in n-hexane. Then, a multi-set scaling damped Franck-Condon simulation was proposed and carried out for simulating the extremely solvent-enhanced absorbance and fluorescence, and here, the simulated spectra agreed well with the experimental ones. Five (four) representative solvent-enhanced normal modes corresponding to the combination of ring stretching and ring breathing vibrational motions were determined to be responsible for enhanced absorbance (fluorescence) in n-hexane solution. Furthermore, different scalings were applied to the ground and first-excited states, resulting in different enhancement of absorbance and fluorescence, and this analysis revealed atoms in the carbazole interacting with n-hexane solvent molecules and, hence, leading to different normal-mode vibrational vector patterns in the ground and first-excited states, respectively. Basically, the same conclusion was drawn from a simulation with HF-CIS and the three functionals (TD)B3LYP, (TD)B3LYP-35, and (TD)BHandHLYP. The present multi-set scaling damped Franck-Condon simulation scheme was demonstrated to successfully interpret extremely solvent-enhanced absorbance and fluorescence of carbazole in n-hexane-solvent.

Abstract
To alleviate the computational cost associated with on-the-fly ab initio semiclassical calculations of molecular spectra, we propose the single-Hessian thawed Gaussian approximation in which the Hessian of the potential energy at all points along an anharmonic classical trajectory is approximated by a constant matrix. The spectra obtained with this approximation are compared with the exact quantum spectra of a one-dimensional Morse potential and with the experimental spectra of ammonia and quinquethiophene. In all cases, the single-Hessian version performs almost as well as the much more expensive on-the-fly ab initio thawed Gaussian approximation and significantly better than the global harmonic schemes. Remarkably, unlike the thawed Gaussian approximation, the proposed method conserves energy exactly, despite the time dependence of the corresponding effective Hamiltonian, and, in addition, can be mapped to a higher-dimensional time-independent classical Hamiltonian system. We also provide a detailed comparison with several related approximations used for accelerating prefactor calculations in semiclassical simulations.

Abstract
Our general framework for the simulation of vibrational signatures in electronic spectra has been extended to treat one large-amplitude motion (LAM) at the anharmonic level, coupled to the other small-amplitude motions (SAM) treated as harmonic. The coupling between LAM and SAM is minimized thanks to the use of delocalized internal coordinates, which are built automatically from the molecular topology. General LAMs can be employed, ranging from intrinsic reaction coordinates to rigid or flexible paths based on the distinguished coordinate approach. The anharmonic model is based on a fully numerical method based on the discrete variable representation (DVR) theory, supporting different types of boundary conditions. The inclusion of this model in a general-purpose electronic structure code makes available to the user a large panel of quantum chemistry models, for both isolated and condensed phases. The flexibility and reliability of the new framework are illustrated by some case studies, covering various types of LAMs, ranging from a small test case, the photoelectron spectrum of ammonia, to larger systems, such as phenylanthracene and cyclobutanone.

Abstract
We present a reliable and cost-effective procedure for the inclusion of anharmonic effects in excited-state energies and spectroscopic intensities by means of second-order vibrational perturbation theory. This development is made possible thanks to a recent efficient implementation of excited-state analytic Hessians and properties within the time-dependent density functional theory framework. As illustrated in this work, by taking advantage of such algorithmic developments, it is possible to perform calculations of excited-state infrared spectra of medium-large isolated molecular systems, with anharmonicity effects included in both the energy and property surfaces. We also explore the use of this procedure for the inclusion of anharmonic effects in the simulation of vibronic bandshapes of electronic spectra and compare the results with previous, more approximate models.

Abstract
Our general platform integrating time-independent and time-dependent evaluations of vibronic effects at the harmonic level for different kinds of absorption and emission one-photon, conventional and chiral spectroscopies has been extended to support various sets of internal coordinates. Thanks to the implementation of analytical first and second derivatives of different internal coordinates with respect to cartesian ones, both vertical and adiabatic models are available, with the inclusion of mode mixing and, possibly, Herzberg-Teller contributions. Furthermore, all supported non-redundant sets of coordinates are built from a fully automatized algorithm using only a primitive redundant set derived from a bond order-based molecular topology. Together with conventional stretching, bending, and torsion coordinates, the availability of additional coordinates (including linear and out-of-plane bendings) allows a proper treatment of specific systems, including, for instance, inter-molecular hydrogen bridges. A number of case studies are analysed, showing that cartesian and internal coordinates are nearly equivalent for semi-rigid systems not experiencing significant geometry distortions between initial and final electronic states. At variance, delocalized (possibly weighted) internal coordinates become much more effective than their cartesian counterparts for flexible systems and/or in the presence of significant geometry distortions accompanying electronic transitions.

Abstract
Computational spectroscopy has recently evolved from a field reserved for specialists toward a general tool allowing interpretations and analyses of experimental results. However, the current practice of providing tables of transitions for rigid geometries, possibly tuned by phenomenological broadening, is by far too naive. In order to improve this situation in the last few years we have been developing a general, robust, and user-friendly virtual spectrometer (VS) able to complement experimental studies for complex systems in condensed phases. The VS is based on flexible graphical pre- and postprocessing tools interfaced with general number-crunching software. This last tool is rooted in several electronic structure methodologies (DFT, TD-DFT, post-Hartree-Fock), powerful discrete/continuum models for describing environmental effects, and general vibrational and vibronic models. These last topics are the main focus of this work, which sketches our latest developments related to effective inclusion of anharmonic contributions, together with time-independent and/or time-dependent descriptions of vibronic transitions including Franck-Condon, Herzberg-Teller, and Duschinsky effects. Some test cases are described in some detail with the aim of showing the role of different effects in ruling vibrational (VCD) and electronic (ECD, CPL) chiral spectroscopies.

Abstract
A set of exchange-correlation functionals, including BLYP, PBE0, B3LYP, BHandHLYP, CAM-B3LYP, LC-BLYP, and HSE, has been used to determine static and dynamic nonresonant (nuclear relaxation) vibrational (hyper)polarizabilities for a series of all-trans polymethineimine (PMI) oligomers containing up to eight monomer units. These functionals are assessed against reference values obtained using the Møller-Plesset second-order perturbation theory (MP2) and CCSD methods. For the smallest oligomer, CCSD(T) calculations confirm the choice of MP2 and CCSD as appropriate for assessing the density functionals. By and large, CAM-B3LYP is the most successful, because it is best for the nuclear relaxation contribution to the static linear polarizability, intensity-dependent refractive index second hyperpolarizability, static second hyperpolarizability, and is close to the best for the electro-optical Pockels effect first hyperpolarizability. However, none of the functionals perform satisfactorily for all the vibrational (hyper)polarizabilities studied. In fact, in the case of electric field-induced second harmonic generation all of them, as well as the Hartree-Fock approximation, yield the wrong sign. We have also found that the Pople 6-31+G(d) basis set is unreliable for computing nuclear relaxation (hyper)polarizabilities of PMI oligomers due to the spurious prediction of a nonplanar equilibrium geometry.

Abstract
There has been a considerable interest in the chiroptical properties of molecules whose chirality is exclusively due to an isotopic substitution and numerous examples for the electronic circular dichroism (CD) spectra of isotopically chiral systems have been reported in literature. Four different explanations have been proposed for the mechanism as to how the isotopic substitution induces a chiral perturbation of the otherwise achiral electronic wave function; however, up to now no conclusive answer has been given about the dominating effect responsible for the experimental observations. In this study we will present, for the first time, fully quantum-mechanical calculations of the CD spectra of three different molecular systems with isotopically engendered chirality. As examples, we consider the spectra of organic molecules with ketone and alpha-diketone carbonyl and diene chromophores. The effect of vibronic couplings for the reorientation of the electric and magnetic transition dipole moments is taken into account within the Herzberg-Teller approximation. The ground and excited state geometries and vibrational normal modes are obtained with (time-dependent) density functional theory [(TD)DFT], while the vibronic coupling effects are calculated at the TDDFT and density functional theory/multireference configuration interaction (DFT/MRCI) levels of theory. Generally, the band shapes of the experimental CD spectra are reproduced very well, and also the absolute CD intensities from the simulations are of the right order of magnitude. The sign and the intensity of the CD band are determined by a delicate balance of the contributions of a large number of individual vibronic transitions, and it is found that the vibrational normal modes with a large displacement are dominant. The separation of the calculated CD spectrum into the different contributions due to the overlap of the in-plane and out-of-plane components (regarding the symmetry plane of the unsubstituted molecule) of the electric and magnetic transition dipole moments yields information about the influence of the vibronic coupling effects for the reorientation of the corresponding transition dipole moments. In conclusion, the calculations clearly show that vibronic effects are responsible or at least dominant for the chiroptical properties of isotopically chiral organic molecules.

Abstract
A general and efficient approach for the calculation of Franck-Condon integrals (FCIs) of large molecules is presented. In a first step, by exploiting the diagonally dominant and sparse structure of the Duschinsky matrix, a model system is constructed for which the Duschinsky matrix takes a block-diagonal form. For each of these blocks separately, the FCIs are calculated discarding all below a certain threshold. From those integrals retained the FCIs of the model system are obtained by simple multiplication. These serve as an estimate for the FCIs of the exact system which are calculated for those integrals which lie above a certain threshold. By systematically decreasing the threshold, the simulation can be reliably converged to the exact result with an arbitrary accuracy. Using this scheme, a considerable reduction of the number of FCIs which have to be calculated is achieved which leads to an improved scaling behavior of the computational effort with system size. The approach has been tested thoroughly for a set of molecules including difficult cases. For the larger systems a speedup of up to three orders of magnitude compared to an exact calculation is observed while the errors can be kept negligible. With this approach accurate calculations of FCIs are feasible also for large molecules encountered in "real-life" chemistry, especially biochemistry and material science.

Abstract
We have implemented our new procedure for computing Franck-Condon factors utilizing vibrational configuration interaction based on a vibrational self-consistent field reference. Both Duschinsky rotations and anharmonic three-mode coupling are taken into account. Simulations of the first ionization band of ClO(2) and C(4)H(4)O (furan) using up to quadruple excitations in treating anharmonicity are reported and analyzed. A developer version of the MIDASCPP code was employed to obtain the required anharmonic vibrational integrals and transition frequencies.
