Microphase separation of weakly charged block polyelectrolyte solutions: Donnan theory for dynamic polymer morphologies

Coarse-Grained Molecular Dynamics (CG-MD) Simulation of the Encapsulation of Dexamethasone in PSS/PDDA Layer-by-Layer Assembled Polyelectrolyte Nanocapsules

Experimental studies have reported the fundamental and applied science aspects of polyelectrolyte (PE) layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly. LbL nanocoating is a simple and robust technique that can be used to modify the surface properties of nearly any material. These modifications take place by adsorption of mere nanometers of PE to impart previously absent properties to the nanocoated substrate. Paper manufacturing, drug delivery, and antimicrobial applications have since been developed. LbL self-assembly has become a very lucrative field of research. Computational modeling of LbL nanocoating has received limited attention. PE simulations often require significant computational resources and make computational modeling studies challenging. In this study, atomic-level PE and dexamethasone models are developed and then converted into coarse-grained (CG) models. This modeling study is based on experimental results that were previously reported. The CG models showed the effect of salt concentration and the number of PE layers on the LbL drug nanocapsule. The suitability of the model was evaluated and showed that this model can serve as a predictive tool for an LbL-nanocoated drug delivery system. It is suggested that this model can be used to simulate LbL drug delivery systems before the experimental evaluation of the real systems take place.

Self-assembled morphologies of an amphiphilic Y-shaped weak polyelectrolyte in a thin film

Different from the self-assembly of neutral polymers, polyelectrolytes self-assemble into smaller aggregates with a more loosely assembled structure, which results from the repulsive forces acting between similar electrical compositions with the introduction of ions. The Y-shaped weak polyelectrolytes self-assemble into a core-shell type cylindrical structure with a hexagonal arrangement in a thin film, whose thickness is smaller than the gyration radius of the polymer chain. The corresponding formation mechanism consists of enrichment of the same components, adjustment of the shape of the aggregate, and the subsequent separation into individual aggregates. With the increase in the thickness of the thin film until it exceeds the gyration radius of the polymer chain, combined with the greater freedom of movement along the direction of thin film thickness, the self-assembled structure changes into a micellar structure. Under confinement, the repulsive force to the polymeric components is weakened by the repulsive forces among polyelectrolyte components with like charges, and this helps in generating aggregates with more uniform size and density distribution. In particular, when the repulsive force between the walls and the core forming components is greater than that between the walls and the shell forming components, such asymmetric confinement produces a crossed-cylindrical structure with nearly perpendicular arrangement of two cylinder arrays. Similarly, a novel three-crossed cylinder morphology is self-assembled upon removal of confinement.

Computer Simulation Studies on the pH-Responsive Self-Assembly of Amphiphilic Carboxy-Terminated Polyester Dendrimers in Aqueous Solution

This paper investigates the pH-responsive self-assembly of an amphiphilic carboxyl-terminated polyester dendrimer, H20-COOH, in aqueous solution using the dissipative particle dynamics method. The electrostatic interactions were described by introducing the explicit interaction between the smeared charges on ionized polymer beads and the counterions. The results show that the self-assemblies could change from unimolecular micelles, microphase-separated small micelles, wormlike micelles, sheetlike micelles, and small vesicles to large vesicles with the decrease in the degree of ionization (α) of carboxylic acid groups. In addition, the detailed self-assembly mechanisms and the molecular packing models have also been disclosed for each self-assembly stages. Interestingly, the wormlike micelles are found to change from linear to branched when α decreases from 0.182 to 0.109. The current work might serve as a comprehensive understanding on the effect of carboxylic acid groups on the self-assembly behaviors of dendritic polymers.

Modeling Aggregation of Ionic Surfactants Using a Smeared Charge Approximation in Dissipative Particle Dynamics Simulations

Using dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations, we explore the specifics of micellization in the solutions of anionic and cationic surfactants and their mixtures. Anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) are chosen as characteristic examples. Coarse-grained models of the surfactants are constructed and parameterized using a combination of atomistic molecular simulation and infinite dilution activity coefficient calibration. Electrostatic interactions of charged beads are treated using a smeared charge approximation: the surfactant heads and dissociated counterions are modeled as beads with charges distributed around the bead center in an implicit dielectric medium. The proposed models semiquantitatively describe self-assembly in solutions of SDS and CTAB at various surfactant concentrations and molarities of added electrolyte. In particular, the model predicts a decline in the free surfactant concentration with the increase of the total surfactant loading, as well as characteristic aggregation transitions in single-component surfactant solutions caused by the addition of salt. The calculated values of the critical micelle concentration reasonably agree with experimental observations. Modeling of catanionic SDS-CTAB mixtures show consecutive transitions to worm-like micelles and then to vesicles caused by the addition of CTAB to micellar solution of SDS.

Morphology of lipid-like structured weak polyelectrolyte poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) diblock copolymers induced by confinements

Combined with quantum calculations and mesoscale simulations, the self-assembly of twelve lipid-structured PEO-b-PMMA copolymers (BCPs) with six types of molecular topologies was investigated. The BCPs with MMA species as the connecting center of the other arms present ample mesoscale structures, such as micelles and lamellae or curved lamellar phases, and even macrophase separation occurs for the long-chained BCPs. The excluded volume effect of confinements helps form vesicle-like structures, which proved to be a possible method of confinement to regulate phase morphologies or segment distributions and, ultimately, the properties of materials. An analysis of the phase formation process of short-chained BCP with two hydrophilic EO segments and one hydrophobic MMA segment indicated that four stages were found in both neutral and non-neutral wall confinement, all of which present a hexagonal columnar phase. Surprisingly, when the repulsion effect of the wall to the EO segment is greater than that of the MMA segment, such BCP self assembles into a crossed columnar phase, and the intersection angle of the orientation of these two sets of cylinder arrays is 75 degrees, which can be used to produce heterogeneous nanotube arrays. For the short-chained BCP with four arms joined at MMA species and EO segments in the outer region, we found a novel method of exchanging the repulsive preference of the wall to the EO or MMA species that can control the adsorption or desorption of the lamellar phase with the interval of EO or MMA segments.

Mesoscopic simulation of the self-assembly of the weak polyelectrolyte poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) diblock copolymers

We designed twelve types of weak polyelectrolytes (i.e., PEO-b-PMMA copolymers (BCP) in multi-arm structures, where six include EO blocks as joint points and the other six have MMA blocks as joint points). All of the BCPs with EO as the joint points form disordered phases with the exception of long-chained and four-armed BCP. The main mesophases of all of the BCPs with MMA as joint points are micelle-like and bicontinuous phases. In particular, the short-chained BCP with four-arms and EO segments outside form a new phase type (i.e., crossed lamellar phase). Using MesoDyn, we provide a comprehensive representation of the micelle and crossed lamellar phase formation mechanisms based on both thermodynamic and dynamic analyses. A shear force on a micelle-like phase could promote a hexagonal columnar phase, which is a good technique for generating an ordered arrangement of nanotube arrays. Blending homopolymers with the same constituents could promote uniformity of the micelle size and decrease the polydispersity, especially for blends with a high BCP concentration, which may provide a new approach for regulating the properties of materials.

Self-assembly in Nafion membranes upon hydration: water mobility and adsorption isotherms

By means of dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, we explored geometrical, transport, and sorption properties of hydrated Nafion-type polyelectrolyte membranes. Composed of a perfluorinated backbone with sulfonate side chains, Nafion self-assembles upon hydration and segregates into interpenetrating hydrophilic and hydrophobic subphases. This segregated morphology determines the transport properties of Nafion membranes that are widely used as compartment separators in fuel cells and other electrochemical devices, as well as permselective diffusion barriers in protective fabrics. We introduced a coarse-grained model of Nafion, which accounts explicitly for polymer rigidity and electrostatic interactions between anionic side chains and hydrated metal cations. In a series of DPD simulations with increasing content of water, a classical percolation transition from a system of isolated water clusters to a 3D network of hydrophilic channels was observed. The hydrophilic subphase connectivity and water diffusion were studied by constructing digitized replicas of self-assembled morphologies and performing random walk simulations. A non-monotonic dependence of the tracer diffusivity on the water content was found. This unexpected behavior was explained by the formation of large and mostly isolated water domains detected at high water content and high equivalent polymer weight. Using MC simulations, we calculated the chemical potential of water in the hydrated polymer and constructed the water sorption isotherms, which extended to the oversaturated conditions. We determined that the maximum diffusivity and the onset of formation of large water domains corresponded to the saturation conditions at 100% humidity. The oversaturated membrane morphologies generated in the canonical ensemble DPD simulations correspond to the metastable and unstable states of Nafion membrane that are not realized in the experiments.

Effects of shear and charge on the microphase formation of P123 polymer in the SBA-15 synthesis investigated by mesoscale simulations

Mesoscale simulation was performed to investigate the dynamical structural behavior of the pluronic P123 block copolymer in the synthesis of mesoporous SBA-15. Shear is introduced to represent stirring in the actual experiment, and a weak charge is included to simulate the acidic conditions in the synthesis. Under shear, with the increase in weak charge in the PEO [poly(ethylene oxide)] block, the template forms more ordered hexagonal phases, and the pore sizes of the cylindrical hydrophobic PPO [poly(propylene oxide)] blocks decrease. The structural factor shows three types of water molecules in the mesoscale aggregates, including bulk water in the solution, bound water around the hydrophilic PEO corona, and trapped water in the hydrophobic PPO core. When 1,3,5-trimethyl-benzene (TMB) is added to the system as a swelling agent, expanded hexagonal phases are formed, and the density mapping of TMB shows that the TMB molecules are mainly located in the hydrophobic PPO cores. In configurations with spherical micelles, although bimodally dispersed spheres are observed, the face-centered cubic (fcc) packing of the micelles hardly changes with the addition of TMB. In agreement with experimental results, the simulations show that the shear and the weak charge are essential to the formation of hexagonal templates in the copolymer. Mesoscopic simulations complement experimental investigations on the morphology changes of amphiphilic polymer in template syntheses and can provide important guidance for further experiments.

Microphase separation in polyelectrolytic diblock copolymer melt: Weak segregation limit

The authors present a generalized theory of microphase separation for charged-neutral diblock copolymer melt. The stability limit of the disordered phase for salt-free melt has been calculated using random phase approximation (RPA) and self-consistent-field theory (SCFT). Explicit analytical free energy expressions for different classical ordered microstructures (lamellar, cylinder, and sphere) are presented. The authors demonstrate that the chemical mismatch required for the onset of microphase separation (chi*N) in charged-neutral diblock melt is higher and the period of ordered microstructures is lower than those for the corresponding neutral-neutral diblock system. Theoretical predictions on the period of ordered structures in terms of Coulomb electrostatic interaction strength, chain length, block length, and chemical mismatch between blocks are presented. SCFT has been used to go beyond the stability limit, where electrostatic potential and charge distribution are calculated self-consistently. Stability limits calculated using RPA are in perfect agreement with the corresponding SCFT calculations. Limiting laws for the stability limit and the period of ordered structures are presented and comparisons are made with an earlier theory. Also, transition boundaries between different morphologies have been investigated.

Structure formation in films of weakly charged block polyelectrolyte solutions

A mean-field dynamic density functional theory is used to describe a phase diagram of concentrated solutions of weakly charged flexible block polyelectrolytes in a film. Electrostatics is taken into account by applying the local electroneutrality constraint (the Donnan membrane equilibrium approach). In the Donnan limit it is assumed that a salt added to the solution perfectly screens long-range electrostatic interactions. The phase diagram of a solution of a triblock polyelectrolyte in a film as a function of the solvent concentration and the charge of the polyelectrolyte (solvophilic) block is calculated for a given film thickness. The phase behavior of the block polyelectrolyte film arises from the interplay between surface-induced alignment and the electrostatically-driven structure formation. The observed mesoscopic structures (lamellar, perforated lamellar, cylindrical, micellar, and mixed phases) are oriented parallel to the surfaces for the considered case of morphologies unfrustrated by the film thickness. Structures with connections between parallel layers (bicontinuous, etc.) are not formed. As a result of surface-induced ordering, the region of ordered phases in a film is wider than in bulk and the phase boundary between ordered and disordered phases is more diffuse. As in the case of unconfined block polyelectrolyte solution, the solution in a film does not follow the lyotropic sequence of phases of such a block copolymer upon increase in the charge of the polyelectrolyte block. Upon changing the charge of the solvophilic copolymer block, transformations of copolymer morphology take place via change in curvature of polymeric domains. Due to confinement of a polyelectrolyte film, no swelling of solvophilic domains is observed.

Mesoscopic simulation study on a weakly charged block polyelectrolyte in aqueous solution

In this paper, we use density functional theory to study the effect of the charge of solvophilic beads and concentration on the mesoscale structures of polyelectrolyte solution. The polyelectrolyte A6B12A6 was selected as the triblock polymer, and the solvophobic B blocks have no charges, while the solvophilic A blocks are charged. The simulation results showed: at higher concentration (above 50% systems), relatively small charges on the solvophilic block do not alter the bicontinuous phase inherent to uncharged solution, but at moderate concentrations (50% system), even though the charge per solvophilic bead is very small, the order lamellar structures become disturbed.
