Photoelectron kinetic energy dependence in near threshold ionization of NO from A state studied by time-resolved photoelectron imaging

Time-energy mapping of photoelectron angular distribution: application to photoionization stereodynamics of nitric oxide

The time-energy mapping of the photoionization integral cross section and laboratory-frame photoelectron angular distribution is used to study photoionization stereodynamics of a diatomic molecule. The general theoretical formalism [Y. Suzuki and T. Suzuki, Mol. Phys., 2007, 105, 1675] is simplified for application to a diatomic molecule, and a high-resolution photoelectron imaging apparatus is used to determine the transition dipole moments and phase shifts of photoelectron partial waves in near-threshold and non-dissociative photoionization of NO from the A(2)Σ(+) state. The transition dipoles and phase shifts thus determined are in reasonable agreement with those by state-to-state photoionization experiment and Schwinger variational calculations. The difference of the phase shifts from those expected from the quantum defects of Rydberg states suggests occurrence of weak hybridization of different l-waves, in addition to the well-known s-d super complex. The circular dichroism in photoelectron angular distribution is also simulated from our results.

Coherent oscillatory femtosecond dynamics in multichannel photodynamics of NO2 studied by spatially masked electron imaging

The femtosecond multiphoton photoionization and dissociation dynamics of NO(2) have been studied in a two-color pump-probe experiment at 400 and 266 nm using velocity map ion imaging in conjunction with photoelectron imaging. We report here a series of experiments focusing on the oscillatory patterns in pump-probe transients of the photoelectron signal. By using the technique of spatially masked imaging detection, we can select different photoelectron channels enabling the rapid measurement of energy selected transients with good signal-to-noise ratio. At short delay times (<300 fs) the dominant process is dissociative multiphoton ionization by 3 x 400 nm + 1 x 266 nm excitation to a repulsive potential energy surface of the NO(2)(+) cation correlating to NO(+)((1)Sigma(+)) + O((3) P) and the ejection of a 0.37 eV electron. At longer delay times (>400 fs), the release of high-energy electrons (0.88 eV) is observed attributed to a three-photon absorption at 400 nm to Rydberg and valence type excited states of neutral NO(2) leading to predissociation and the production of NO(+) + O((3)P) from a one-photon ionization at 266 nm. At longer delay times (>400 fs) a second slow (near 0 eV) photoelectron channel is observed that is associated with one photon excitation at 400 nm to the first excited A(2)B(2) state of NO(2) followed by two-photon excitation at 266 nm leading to near threshold ionization and dissociation to NO(+) + O((3)P). Distinctive oscillatory patterns were found in the pump-probe transients of the photoelectron yield for both the slow and the fast photoelectron channels but with different periods of about 750 fs (slow) or 590 fs (fast). Extensive polarization experiments are reported for both linear and circular polarized pump and probe laser geometries. We discuss the oscillatory mechanism in relation to ab initio calculations of relevant Rydberg and valence type excited states of NO(2) near 9.3 eV. We propose that an oscillating wavepacket of mixed Rydberg and valence character that predissociates is responsible for the observed oscillations in the transients of the fast (0.88 eV) photoelectron channel.

Ultrafast dynamics of o-bromofluorobenzene studied by time-resolved photoelectron imaging

Photodissociation dynamics and rotational wave packet coherences of o-bromofluorobenzene are studied by femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron imaging [figure: see text]. The decay of different photoelectron rings shows the population decay of states from which the lifetimes of different states are determined. The variation of photoelectron angular distributions reflects the evolution of rotational coherences.Photodissociation dynamics and rotational wave packet coherences of o-bromofluorobenzene are studied by femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron imaging (TR-PEI) spectroscopy combined with the (1+2') resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI). Photoelectron kinetic energy and angular distributions indicate ionization dynamics from some Rydberg states at the (1+1') photon energy. The lifetimes of the S(1) (A') and T(2) (A') states are determined from the decay of the photoelectron signals to be 38 ps and 27 ps. The electron population decay of the two states is attributed to predissociation and tunneling dissociation. The variation of time-dependent anisotropy parameters in the first 5 ps shows the rotational wave coherences of molecule.

Multihit two-dimensional charged-particle imaging system with real-time image processing at 1000 frames/s

A high-speed imaging system developed for two-dimensional counting of charged particles is presented. Microchannel plates coupled with a phosphor screen of a short emission lifetime (<1 micros) are used to visualize the two-dimensional positions of charged-particle impacts, and the image on the phosphor screen is captured with a 1 kHz complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor (512x512 pixels). A multistage image intensifier consisting of the first and second generation devices was used to compensate for the low sensitivity of CMOS. The centers of gravity (COG) of individual light spots in each image frame are calculated in real time by a field programmable gate array circuit. The performance of this system is tested by time-resolved photoelectron imaging (TR-PEI) of NO using (1+1(')) resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization via the A (2)Sigma(+) state with a femtosecond laser operated at 1 kHz. The new system enabled COG detection for more than ten particles in each frame at 1 kHz and achieved an extremely high degree of accuracy in the measurement of photoelectron angular distributions in TR-PEI.

Direct measurement of the angular dependence of the single-photon ionization of aligned N2 and CO2

By combining a state-of-the-art high-harmonic ultrafast soft X-ray source with field-free dynamic alignment, we map the angular dependence of molecular photoionization yields for the first time for a nondissociative molecule. The observed modulation in ion yield as a function of molecular alignment is attributed to the molecular frame transition dipole moment of single-photon ionization to the X, A and B states of N2(+) and CO2(+). Our data show that the transition dipoles for single-photon ionization of N2 and CO2 at 43 eV have larger perpendicular components than parallel ones. A direct comparison with published theoretical partial wave ionization cross-sections confirms these experimental observations, which are the first results to allow such comparison with theory for bound cation states. The results provide the first step toward a novel method for measuring molecular frame transition dipole matrix elements.

Photoelectron imaging of copper and silver mono- and diamine anions

The results of photoelectron imaging experiments of Cu and Ag mono- and diamine anions are reported. The photoelectron images were recorded at two photon energies, 800 and 527 nm. The vertical detachment energies of CuNH(2) (-) and AgNH(2) (-) are lower than those of the respective atomic metal ion and are measured to be 1.11+/-0.05 and 1.23+/-0.05 eV, respectively. By contrast, the electron detachment energies for Cu(NH(2))(2) (-) and Ag(NH(2))(2) (-) are higher than those of the corresponding metal ion and are determined to be 1.48+/-0.05 and 1.85+/-0.05 eV, respectively. Energy-dependent photoelectron anisotropy parameters are also reported. The photodetachment of the Cu and Ag mono- and diamine anions exhibit a cos(2) theta angular dependence relative to the direction of the laser polarization. The nature of the chemical bonding and the symmetry of the highest occupied molecular orbitals are discussed in relevance to the measured anisotropy parameters.

Femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron imaging

Femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron imaging (TRPEI) is a variant of time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy used in the study of gas-phase photoinduced dynamics. A new observable, time-dependent photoionization-differential cross section provides useful information on wave-packet motions, electronic dephasing, and photoionization dynamics. This review describes fundamental issues and the most recent works involving TRPEI.
