Abstract
The influence of nuclear dynamics in the electronic ground state on the (e,2e) momentum profiles of dimethyl ether has been analyzed using the harmonic analytical quantum mechanical and Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics approaches. In spite of fundamental methodological differences, results obtained with both approaches consistently demonstrate that molecular vibrations in the electronic ground state have a most appreciable influence on the momentum profiles associated to the 2b1, 6a1, 4b2, and 1a2 orbitals. Taking this influence into account considerably improves the agreement between theoretical and newly obtained experimental momentum profiles, with improved statistical accuracy. Both approaches point out in particular the most appreciable role which is played by a few specific molecular vibrations of A1, B1, and B2 symmetries, which correspond to C-H stretching and H-C-H bending modes. In line with the Herzberg-Teller principle, the influence of these molecular vibrations on the computed momentum profiles can be unraveled from considerations on the symmetry characteristics of orbitals and their energy spacing.

Abstract
The influence of thermally induced nuclear dynamics (molecular vibrations) in the initial electronic ground state on the valence orbital momentum profiles of furan has been theoretically investigated using two different approaches. The first of these approaches employs the principles of Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics, whereas the so-called harmonic analytical quantum mechanical approach resorts to an analytical decomposition of contributions arising from quantized harmonic vibrational eigenstates. In spite of their intrinsic differences, the two approaches enable consistent insights into the electron momentum distributions inferred from new measurements employing electron momentum spectroscopy and an electron impact energy of 1.2 keV. Both approaches point out in particular an appreciable influence of a few specific molecular vibrations of A1 symmetry on the 9a1 momentum profile, which can be unravelled from considerations on the symmetry characteristics of orbitals and their energy spacing.

Abstract
The valence electronic properties of S-ethyl flouromethanethioate (S-ethyl fluoromethsanethioate), FC(O)SCH2CH3, were investigated by means of He(I) photoelectron spectroscopy in conjunction with the analysis of the photofragmentation products determined by PEPICO (phtoelectron-photoion-coincidence) by using synchrotron radiation in the 11.1-21.6 eV photon energy range. The first band observed at 10.28 eV in the HeI photoelectron spectrum can be assigned with confidence to the ionization process from the HOMO [nπ(S) orbital], which is described as a lone pair formally localized on the sulfur atom, in agreement with quantum chemical calculations using the outer valence Green function method [OVGF/6-311++G (d,p)]. One of the most important fragmentation channels also observed in the valence region corresponds to the decarbonylation process yielding the [M-CO](·+) ion, which is clearly observed at m/z = 80. Moreover, S 2p and S 2s absorption edges have been examined by measuring the total ion yield spectra in the 160-240 eV region using variable synchrotron radiation. The dynamic of ionic fragmentation following the Auger electronic decay has been evaluated with the help of the PEPIPICO (photoion-photoion-photoelectron-coincidence spectra) technique.

Abstract
In line with a recent study of the electronic structure of the cage compound norbornane (J. Chem. Phys. 121 (2004), 10525; J. Phys. Chem. A 109 (2005), 4267), symmetry adapted cluster expansion configuration interaction (SAC-CI) general R calculations have been performed and compared with results obtained by the third order algebraic diagrammatic construction scheme [ADC(3)]. Comparison has been made with previously performed electron momentum spectroscopy (EMS) and ultraviolet photo-electron measurements. The region around ~25 eV (band 12), characterized by an elaborated band in the EMS spectrum which is missing in previous Green's function and ADC calculations, is investigated. This study is completed with outer-valence Green's function (OVGF) and SAC-CI/SD-R calculations, and results are obtained by employing (single and double) ionization extended second order ADC [ADC(2)-x]. Since ADC(3) only includes 2h-1p shake-up states, while SAC-CI general-R also includes higher order states, the agreement between both methods assures that the higher order shake-up states do not play an important role in the ionization spectrum of norbornane. While the band-12 issue of norbornane is therefore still open for further discussion, a tentative description in terms of ultrafast nuclear dynamical effects and autoionization processes has become more plausible.

Abstract
A study of valence electronic properties of S-ethyl chlorothioformate (S-ethyl chloromethanethioate), ClC(O)SCH(2)CH(3), using HeI photoelectron spectra (PES) and synchrotron radiation is presented. Moreover, the photon impact excitation and dissociation dynamics of ClC(O)SCH(2)CH(3) excited at the S 2p and Cl 2p levels are elucidated by analyzing the total ion yield (TIY) spectra and time-of-flight mass spectra acquired in multicoincidence mode [photoelectron-photoion coincidence (PEPICO) and photoelectron-photoion-photoion coincidence (PEPIPICO)]. The HeI photoelectron spectrum is dominated by features associated with lone-pair electrons from the ClC(O)S- group, the HOMO at 9.84 eV being assigned to the n(π)(S) sulfur lone-pair orbital. Whereas the formation of C(2)H(5)(+) ion dominates the fragmentation in the valence energy region, the most abundant ion formed in both the S and Cl 2p energy ranges is C(2)H(3)(+). Comparison with related XC(O)SR (X = H, F, Cl and R = -CH(3), -C(2)H(5)) species reveals the impact of the alkyl chain on the photodissociation behavior of S-alkyl (halo)thioformates.

Abstract
The main purpose of the present work is to predict from benchmark many-body quantum mechanical calculations the results of experimental studies of the valence electronic structure of dimethoxymethane employing electron momentum spectroscopy, and to establish once and for all the guidelines that should systematically be followed in order to reliably interpret the results of such experiments on conformationally versatile molecules. In a first step, accurate calculations of the energy differences between stationary points on the potential energy surface of this molecule are performed using Hartree-Fock (HF) theory and post-HF treatments of improving quality (MP2, MP3, CCSD, CCSD(T), along with basis sets of increasing size. This study focuses on the four conformers of this molecule, namely the trans-trans (TT), trans-gauche (TG), gauche-gauche (G+G+), and gauche-gauche (G+G-) structures, belonging to the C2v, C1, C2, and Cs symmetry point groups, respectively. A focal point analysis supplemented by suited extrapolations to the limit of asymptotically complete basis sets is carried out to determine how the conformational energy differences at 0 K approach the full CI limit. In a second step, statistical thermodynamics accounting for hindered rotations is used to calculate Gibbs free energy corrections to the above energy differences, and to evaluate the abundance of each conformer in the gas phase. It is found that, at room temperature, the G+G+ species accounts for 96% of the conformational mixture characterizing dimethoxymethane. In a third step, the valence one-electron and shake-up ionization spectrum of dimethoxymethane is analyzed according to calculations on the G+G+ conformer alone by means of one-particle Green's function [1p-GF] theory along with the benchmark third-order algebraic diagrammatic construction [ADC(3)] scheme. A complete breakdown of the orbital picture of ionization is noted at electron binding energies above 22 eV. A comparison with available (e,2e) ionization spectra enables us to identify specific fingerprints of through-space orbital interactions associated with the anomeric effect. At last, based on our 1p-GF/ADC(3) assignment of spectral bands, accurate and spherically averaged (e,2e) electron momentum distributions at an electron impact energy of 1200 eV are computed from the related Dyson orbitals. Very significant discrepancies are observed with momentum distributions obtained for several outer-valence levels using standard Kohn-Sham orbitals.

Abstract
In continuation of a recent study of the electronic structure of norbornane [J. Chem. Phys., 2004, 121, 10525] by means of electron momentum spectroscopy (EMS), we present Green's Function calculations of the ionization spectrum of this compound at the ADC(3) level using basis sets of varying quality, along with accurate evaluations at the CCSD(T) level of the vertical (26.5 eV) and adiabatic (22.1 eV) double ionization thresholds under C(2v) symmetry. The obtained results are compared with newly recorded ultraviolet photoemission spectra (UPS), up to binding energies of 40 eV. The theoretical predictions are entirely consistent with experiment and indicate that, in a vertical depiction of ionization, shake-up states at binding energies larger than approximately 26.5 eV tend to decay via emission of a second electron in the continuum. A band of s-type symmetry that has been previously seen at approximately 25 eV in the electron impact ionization spectra of norbornane is entirely missing in the UPS measurements and theoretical ADC(3) spectra. With regard to these results and to the time scales characterizing electron-electron interactions in EMS (10(-17) s) as compared with that (10(-13) s) of photon-electron interactions in UPS, and considering the p-type symmetry of the electron momentum distributions for the nearest 1b(1) and 1b(2) orbitals, this additional band can certainly not be due to adiabatic double ionization processes starting from the ground electronic state of norbornane, or to exceptionally strong vibronic coupling interactions between cationic states derived from ionization of the latter orbitals. It is therefore tentatively ascribed to autoionization processes via electronically excited and possibly dissociating states.

Abstract
The valence one-electron and shake-up ionization spectra of stella-2,6-diene, stella-2,6-dione, bicyclo-[2.2.2]-octane-2,5-dione, and bicyclo-[2.2.1]-heptane-2,5-dione have been exhaustively studied, up to the double ionization threshold and beyond, by means of one-particle Green's function theory. This study is based on calculations employing the outer-valence Green's function and the third-order algebraic diagrammatic construction schemes, along with a variety of basis sets. A comparison is made with available ultraviolet (He I) photoelectron and (e, 2e) electron-impact ionization spectra, with main focus on the identification of spectral fingerprints for cyclic strains and through-bond pi-conjugation. As a byproduct, our results demonstrate that it is impossible to reliably assign complex (e, 2e) ionization spectra by resorting only to Hartree-Fock or Kohn-Sham orbital energies and to the related electron momentum distributions.

Abstract
The scope of the present work is to reconcile electron momentum spectroscopy with elementary thermodynamics, and refute conclusions drawn by Saha et al. in J. Chem. Phys. 123, 124315 (2005) regarding fingerprints of the gauche conformational isomer of 1,3-butadiene in electron momentum distributions that were experimentally inferred from gas phase (e,2e) measurements on this compound [M. J. Brunger et al., J. Chem. Phys. 108, 1859 (1998)]. Our analysis is based on thorough calculations of one-electron and shake-up ionization spectra employing one-particle Green's function theory along with the benchmark third-order algebraic diagrammatic construction [ADC(3)] scheme. Accurate spherically averaged electron momentum distributions are correspondingly computed from the related Dyson orbitals. The ionization spectra and Dyson orbital momentum distributions that were computed for the trans-conformer of 1,3-butadiene alone are amply sufficient to quantitatively unravel the shape of all available experimental (e,2e) electron momentum distributions. A comparison of theoretical ADC(3) spectra for the s-trans and gauche energy minima with inner- and outer-valence high-resolution photoelectron measurements employing a synchrotron radiation beam [D. M. P. Holland et al., J. Phys. B 29, 3091 (1996)] demonstrates that the gauche structure is incompatible with ionization experiments in high-vacuum conditions and at standard temperatures. On the other hand, outer-valence Green's function calculations on the s-trans energy minimum form and approaching basis set completeness provide highly quantitative insights, within approximately 0.2 eV accuracy, into the available experimental one-electron ionization energies. At last, analysis of the angular dependence of relative (e,2e) ionization intensities nicely confirms the presence of one rather intense pi(-2) pi(*+1) satellite at approximately 13.1 eV in the ionization spectrum of the s-trans conformer.

Abstract
An increased electron momentum density (EMD) at low momentum is proposed to be an indicator of ring strain, with the nature of the function tending toward a maximum. A p-space Hirshfeld atomic partitioning scheme is applied for analyzing the effect of strain on molecular EMDs. The Hirshfeld momentum densities for a strained system show an increase in the population for the carbons with the hydrogens becoming more positive in comparison with an unstrained reference molecule. The manifestation of strain in cage-like hydrocarbons such as tetrahedrane, cubane, prismane, etc. as well as their nitrogen-substituted analogues is clearly seen in terms of EMDs.

Abstract
Electronic structural signatures of the guanine-7H and guanine-9H tautomers have been investigated on an orbital by orbital basis using dual space analysis. A combination of density functional theory (B3LYP/TZVP), the statistical average of model orbital potentials (SAOP/TZ2P) method and outer valence Green's function theory (OVGF/TZVP) has been used to generate optimal tautomer geometries and accurate ionization energy spectra for the guanine tautomer pair. The present work found that the non-planar form for both of the guanine keto pair possesses lower energies than their corresponding planar counterparts, and that the canonical form of the guanine-7H tautomer has slightly lower total energy than guanine-9H. This latter result is in agreement with previous experimental and theoretical findings. In the planar guanine pair the geometric parameters and anisotropic molecular properties are compared, focusing on changes caused by the mobile proton transfer. It is demonstrated that the mobile proton only causes limited disturbance to isotropic properties, such as geometry and the energetics, of the guanine keto tautomer pair. The exception to this general statement is for related local changes such as the N((7))-C((8)) and C((8))-N((9)) bond length resonance between the single and double bonds, reflecting the nitrogen atom being bonded with the mobile proton in the tautomers. The mobile proton distorts the electron distribution of the tautomers, which leads to significant changes in the molecular anisotropic properties. The dipole moment of guanine-7H is altered by about a factor of three, from 2.23 to 7.05 D (guanine-9H), and the molecular electrostatic potentials also reflect significant electron charge distortion. The outer valence orbital momentum distributions, which were obtained using the plane wave impulse approximation (PWIA), have demonstrated quantitatively that the outer valence orbitals of the tautomer pair can be divided into three groups. That is orbitals 1a''-7a'' and 18a', which do not have visible alternations in the tautomeric process (which consist of either pi orbitals or are close to the inner valence shell); a second group comprising orbitals 19a'-22a', 25a', 26a', 28a', 29a' and 31a', which show small perturbations as a result of the mobile hydrogen locations; and group three, orbitals 23a', 24a', 27a', 30a' and 32a', which demonstrate significant changes due to the mobile proton transfer and are therefore considered as signature orbitals of the G-7H/G-9H keto tautomeric process.

Abstract
We report on the results of an exhaustive study of the interplay between the valence electronic structure, the topology and reactivity of orbitals, and the molecular structure of biphenyl by means of Penning ionization electron spectroscopy in the gas phase upon collision with metastable He*(2(3)S) atoms. The measurements are compared with one-particle Green's function calculations of one-electron and shake-up valence ionization spectra employing the third-order algebraic diagrammatic construction scheme [ADC(3)]. Penning ionization intensities are also analyzed by means of the exterior electron-density model and comparison with photoelectron spectra: in contrast with the lines originating from sigma orbitals, ionization lines belonging to the pi-band system have large Penning ionization cross sections due to their greater extent outside the molecular van der Waals surface. The involved chemi-ionization processes are further experimentally investigated using collision-energy-resolved Penning ionization electron spectroscopy. The cross sections of pi-ionization bands exhibit a markedly negative collision-energy dependence and indicate that the interaction potential that prevails between the molecule and the He*(2(3)S) atom is strongly attractive in the pi-orbital region. On the other hand, the partial ionization cross sections pertaining to sigma-ionization channels are characterized by more limited collision-energy dependencies, as a consequence of rather repulsive interactions within the sigma-orbital region. A comparison of ADC(3) simulations with the Penning ionization electron spectra and UV photoelectron spectra measured by Kubota et al. [Chem. Phys. Lett. 1980, 74, 409] on thin films of biphenyl deposited at 170 and 109 K on copper demonstrates that biphenyl molecules lying at the surface of polycrystalline layers adopt predominantly a planar configuration, whereas within an amorphous sample most molecules have twisted structures similar to those prevailing in the gas phase.

Abstract
Results of a study of the valence electronic structure of norbornene (C(7)H(10)), up to binding energies of 30 eV, are reported. Experimental electron momentum spectroscopy (EMS) and theoretical Green's function and density functional theory approaches were utilized in this investigation. A stringent comparison between the electron momentum spectroscopy and theoretical orbital momentum distributions found that, among the tested models, the combination of the Becke-Perdew functional and a polarized valence basis set of triple-zeta quality provides the best representation of the electron momentum distributions for all 19 valence orbitals of norbornene. This experimentally validated model was then used to extract other molecular properties of norbornene (geometry, infrared spectrum). When these calculated properties are compared to corresponding results from independent measurements, reasonable agreement is typically found. Due to the improved energy resolution, EMS is now at a stage to very finely image the effective topology of molecular orbitals at varying distances from the molecular center, and the way the individual atomic components interact with each other, often in excellent agreement with theory. This will be demonstrated here. Green's Function calculations employing the third-order algebraic diagrammatic construction scheme indicate that the orbital picture of ionization breaks down at binding energies larger than about 22 eV. Despite this complication, they enable insights within 0.2 eV accuracy into the available ultraviolet emission and newly presented (e,2e) ionization spectra. Finally, limitations inherent to calculations of momentum distributions based on Kohn-Sham orbitals and employing the vertical depiction of ionization processes are emphasized, in a formal discussion of EMS cross sections employing Dyson orbitals.
