Nonperturbative vibrational energy relaxation effects on vibrational line shapes

Generalized Resonance Energy Transfer Theory: Applications to Vibrational Energy Flow in Optical Cavities

A general rate theory for resonance energy transfer (gRET) is formulated to incorporate any degrees of freedom (e.g., rotation, vibration, exciton, and polariton) as well as coherently coupled composite donor or acceptor states. The compact rate expression allows us to establish useful relationships: (i) detailed balance condition when the donor and acceptor are at the same temperature; (ii) proportionality to the product of dipole correlation tensors, which is not necessarily equivalent to spectral overlap; (iii) scaling with the effective coherent size, i.e., the number of coherently coupled molecules or modes; (iv) decomposition of collective rate in homogeneous systems into the monomer and coherence contributions such that the ratio of the two defines the quantum enhancement factor F; (v) spatial and orientational dependences as derived from the interaction potential. For the special case of exciton transfer, the general rate formalism reduces to FRET or its multichromophoric extension. When applied to cavity-assisted vibrational energy transfer between molecules or within a molecule, the general rate expression provides an intuitive explanation of intriguing phenomena such as cooperativity, resonance, and nonlinearity in the collective vibrational strong coupling (VSC) regime, as demonstrated in recent simulations. The relevance of gRET to cavity-catalyzed reactions and intramolecular vibrational redistribution is discussed and will lead to further theoretical developments.

Förster resonance energy transfer, absorption and emission spectra in multichromophoric systems. I. Full cumulant expansions and system-bath entanglement

We study the Förster resonant energy transfer rate, absorption and emission spectra in multichromophoric systems. The multichromophoric Förster theory (MCFT) is determined from an overlap integral of generalized matrices related to the donor's emission and acceptor's absorption spectra, which are obtained via a full 2nd-order cumulant expansion technique developed in this work. We calculate the spectra and MCFT rate for both localized and delocalized systems, and calibrate the analytical 2nd-order cumulant expansion with the exact stochastic path integral method. We present three essential findings: (i) The role of the initial entanglement between the donor and its bath is found to be crucial in both the emission spectrum and the MCFT rate. (ii) The absorption spectra obtained by the cumulant expansion method are nearly identical to the exact spectra for both localized and delocalized systems, even when the system-bath coupling is far from the perturbative regime. (iii) For the emission spectra, the cumulant expansion can give reliable results for localized systems, but fail to provide reliable spectra of the high-lying excited states of a delocalized system, when the system-bath coupling is large and the thermal energy is small. This paper also provides a simple golden-rule derivation of the MCFT, reviews existing methods, and motivates further developments in the subsequent papers.

Calculation of absorption spectra for light-harvesting systems using non-Markovian approaches as well as modified Redfield theory

For an ensemble of B850 rings of the light-harvesting system LH2 of purple bacteria the linear absorption spectrum is calculated. Using different Markovian and non-Markovian, time-dependent and time-independent methods based on second-order perturbation theory in the coupling between the excitonic system and its surrounding environment as well as the modified Redfield theory, the influence of the shape of the spectral density on the linear absorption spectrum is demonstrated for single samples and in the ensemble average. For long bath correlation times non-Markovian effects clearly show up in the static absorption line shapes. Among the different spectral densities studied is one of the purple bacterium Rhodospirillum molischianum obtained by a molecular-dynamics simulation earlier. The effect of static disorder on its line shapes in the ensemble average is analyzed and the results of the present calculations are compared to experimental data.

Nonlinear model dynamics for closed-system, constrained, maximal-entropy-generation relaxation by energy redistribution

We discuss a nonlinear model for relaxation by energy redistribution within an isolated, closed system composed of noninteracting identical particles with energy levels with . The time-dependent occupation probabilities are assumed to obey the nonlinear rate equations where and are functionals of the 's that maintain invariant the mean energy and the normalization condition . The entropy is a nondecreasing function of time until the initially nonzero occupation probabilities reach a Boltzmann-like canonical distribution over the occupied energy eigenstates. Initially zero occupation probabilities, instead, remain zero at all times. The solutions of the rate equations are unique and well defined for arbitrary initial conditions and for all times. The existence and uniqueness both forward and backward in time allows the reconstruction of the ancestral or primordial lowest entropy state. By casting the rate equations in terms not of the 's but of their positive square roots , they unfold from the assumption that time evolution is at all times along the local direction of steepest entropy ascent or, equivalently, of maximal entropy generation. These rate equations have the same mathematical structure and basic features as the nonlinear dynamical equation proposed in a series of papers ending with G. P. Beretta, Found. Phys. 17, 365 (1987) and recently rediscovered by S. Gheorghiu-Svirschevski [Phys. Rev. A 63, 022105 (2001);63, 054102 (2001)]. Numerical results illustrate the features of the dynamics and the differences from the rate equations recently considered for the same problem by M. Lemanska and Z. Jaeger [Physica D 170, 72 (2002)]. We also interpret the functionals and as nonequilibrium generalizations of the thermodynamic-equilibrium Massieu characteristic function and inverse temperature, respectively.

Local hydrogen bonding dynamics and collective reorganization in water: Ultrafast infrared spectroscopy of HOD/D2O

We present an investigation into hydrogen bonding dynamics and kinetics in water using femtosecond infrared spectroscopy of the OH stretching vibration of HOD in D(2)O. Infrared vibrational echo peak shift and polarization-selective pump-probe experiments were performed with mid-IR pulses short enough to capture all relevant dynamical processes. The experiments are self-consistently analyzed with a nonlinear response function expressed in terms of three dynamical parameters for the OH stretching vibration: the frequency correlation function, the lifetime, and the second Legendre polynomial dipole reorientation correlation function. It also accounts for vibrational-relaxation-induced excitation of intermolecular motion that appears as heating. The long time, picosecond behavior is consistent with previous work, but new dynamics are revealed on the sub-200 fs time scale. The frequency correlation function is characterized by a 50 fs decay and 180 fs beat associated with underdamped intermolecular vibrations of hydrogen bonding partners prior to 1.4 ps exponential relaxation. The reorientational correlation function observes a 50 fs librational decay prior to 3 ps diffusive reorientation. Both of these correlation functions compare favorably with the predictions from classical molecular dynamics simulations. The time-dependent behavior can be separated into short and long time scales by the 340 fs correlation time for OH frequency shifts. The fast time scales arise from dynamics that are mainly local: fluctuations in hydrogen bond distances and angles within relatively fixed intermolecular configurations. On time scales longer than the correlation time, dephasing and reorientations reflect collective reorganization of the liquid structure. Since the OH transition frequency and dipole are only weakly sensitive to these collective coordinates, this is a kinetic regime which gives an effective rate for exchange of intermolecular structures.
