Abstract
The electronic structure of biradicals is characterized by the presence of two unpaired electrons in degenerate or near-degenerate molecular orbitals. In particular, some of the most relevant species are highly reactive, difficult to generate cleanly and can only be studied in the gas phase or in matrices. Unveiling their electronic structure is, however, of paramount interest to understand their chemistry. Photoelectron photoion coincidence (PEPICO) spectroscopy is an excellent approach to explore the electronic states of biradicals, because it enables a direct correlation between the detected ions and electrons. This permits to extract unique vibrationally resolved photoion mass-selected threshold photoelectron spectra (ms-TPES) to obtain insight in the electronic structure of both the neutral and the cation. In this review we highlight most recent advances on the spectroscopy of biradicals and biradicaloids, utilizing PEPICO spectroscopy and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) synchrotron radiation.

Abstract
Adiabatic and vertical ionization energies corresponding to the X̃ A12, à B22, and B̃ A22 final states of SO2+, O3+, and S3+ have been calculated with a variety of electron-propagator and coupled-cluster methods. The BD-T1 electron-propagator method for vertical ionization energies and coupled-cluster adiabatic and zero-point corrections yield agreement with experiment to within 0.1 eV in all cases but one. The remaining discrepancies for the à B22 state of SO2+ indicate a need for higher levels of theory in determining cationic minima and their accompanying vibrational frequencies. Predictions for the still unobserved à B22 and B̃ A22 final states of S3+ are included. To account for increased biradical character in O3 and S3, highly correlated reference states are required to produce the correct order of final states. Electron correlation plays a subtle role in determining the contours of the Dyson orbitals obtained with BD-T1 and NR2 electron-propagator calculations.

Abstract
We have compiled gas phase enthalpies of formation for nine hydrogen-oxygen species (HxOy) and selected recommended values for H, O, OH, H2O, HO2, H2O2, O3, HO3, and H2O3. The compilation consists of values derived from experimental measurements, quantum chemical calculations, and prior evaluations. This work updates the recommended values in the NIST-JANAF (1985) and Gurvich et al. (1989) thermochemical tables for seven species. For two species, HO3 and H2O3 (important in atmospheric chemistry) and not found in prior thermochemical evaluations, we also provide supplementary data consisting of molecular geometries, vibrational frequencies, and torsional potentials which can be used to compute thermochemical functions. For all species, we also provide supplementary data consisting of zero point energies, vibrational frequencies, and ion reaction energetics.

Abstract
A method is devised better to resolve the subbands of the ground vibronic band in the mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectrum of CD(3)I. By selective photodissociation of CD(3)I(+) in these subbands, high-resolution spectra for the A(2)A(1)<--X(2)E(3/2) transition are recorded. Spectral analysis confirms our previous suggestion that these subbands are due to cations in different rotational K states; this demonstrates the capability of MATI to generate rovibronically selected ion beams. By using the rotational constants of CH(3)I(+) and CD(3)I(+) obtained by spectral analysis, the zero-point-level geometries of the cations in the X(2)E(3/2) and A(2)A(1) states are determined. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the capability of MATI-PD to determine the geometry of a gas-phase polyatomic cation in an excited electronic state is demonstrated.

Abstract
Ensembles of cold atomic and molecular ions in ion traps prepared at millikelvin temperatures by laser and sympathetic cooling have recently found considerable interest in both physics and chemistry. At very low temperatures the ions form ordered structures in the trap also known as "Coulomb crystals". Ion Coulomb crystals exhibit a range of intriguing properties which render them attractive systems for novel experiments in chemical dynamics, ultrahigh-resolution spectroscopy and quantum-information processing. In this article we review the methods used to prepare atomic and molecular ion Coulomb crystals and discuss some recent studies in mass spectrometry, low-temperature chemistry and precision spectroscopy to illustrate their scientific potential for chemical applications. Finally, we conclude with an outlook on outstanding challenges and prospective further developments in the field.

Abstract
Since the discovery of ozone depletion, the doublet electronic states of the ozone radical cation have received much attention in experimental and theoretical investigations, while the low-lying quartet states have not. In the present research, viable pathways to the quartet states from the lowest three triplet states of ozone, (3)A(2), (3)B(2), and (3)B(1), and excitations from the (2)A(1) and (2)B(2) states of the ozone radical cation have been studied in detail. The potential energy surfaces, structural optimizations, and vibrational frequencies for several states of ozone and its radical cation have been thoroughly investigated using the complete active space self-consistent field, unrestricted coupled cluster theory from a restricted open-shell Hartree-Fock reference including all single and double excitations (UCCSD), UCCSD method with the effects of connected triple excitations included perturbatively, and unrestricted coupled cluster including all single, double, and triple excitations with the effects of connected quadruple excitations included perturbatively. These methods used Dunning's correlation-consistent polarized core-valence basis sets, cc-pCVXZ (X = D, T, Q, and 5). The most feasible pathways (symmetry and spin allowed transitions) to the quartet states are (4)A(1)<--(3)A(2), (4)A(2)<--(3)A(2), (4)A(1)<--(3)B(2), (4)A(2)<--(3)B(1), (4)B(2)<--(3)B(1), (4)A(2)<--(1)A(1), (4)B(2)<--(1)A(1), and (4)A(1)<--(1)A(1) with vertical ionization potentials of 12.46, 12.85, 12.82, 12.46, 12.65, 13.43, 13.93, and 14.90 eV, respectively.

Abstract
We report an investigation into the dissociative recombination of the azide radical cation, N(3) (+). The reaction rate constant has been measured to be 6.47 x 10(-7) cm(3) s(-1) at room temperature. This value is smaller than those reported earlier for the ion-electron neutralization of N(3) (+) at nitrogen atmospheric pressure. A strong propensity to dissociate through the N(2)+N channel has been observed.

Abstract
We report the first observation of almost exclusive three-body breakup in the dissociative recombination of a covalent triatomic molecular ion O3+. The three-body channel, constituting about 94% of the total reactivity, has been investigated in detail. The atomic fragments are formed in only the first two electronic states, 3P and 1D, while formation in the 1S state has not been observed. The breakup predominantly proceeds through dissociative states with linear geometry.

Abstract
We show that optical pump-terahertz probe spectroscopy is a direct experimental tool for exploring laser-induced ionization and plasma formation in gases. Plasma was produced in gaseous oxygen by focused amplified femtosecond pulses. The ionization mechanisms at 400- and 800-nm excitation wavelengths differ significantly being primarily of a multiphoton character in the former case and a strong-field process in the latter case. The generation of the plasma in the focal volume of the laser and its expansion on subnanosecond time scale is directly monitored through its density-dependent susceptibility. A Drude model used to evaluate the plasma densities and electron-scattering rates successfully captures the observations for a wide range of pump intensities. In addition, rotational fingerprints of molecular and ionic species were also observed in the spectra.
