Coherence spectroscopy in dissipative media: A Liouville space pathway approach

Equation-of-Motion Methods for the Calculation of Femtosecond Time-Resolved 4-Wave-Mixing and N-Wave-Mixing Signals

Femtosecond nonlinear spectroscopy is the main tool for the time-resolved detection of photophysical and photochemical processes. Since most systems of chemical interest are rather complex, theoretical support is indispensable for the extraction of the intrinsic system dynamics from the detected spectroscopic responses. There exist two alternative theoretical formalisms for the calculation of spectroscopic signals, the nonlinear response-function (NRF) approach and the spectroscopic equation-of-motion (EOM) approach. In the NRF formalism, the system-field interaction is assumed to be sufficiently weak and is treated in lowest-order perturbation theory for each laser pulse interacting with the sample. The conceptual alternative to the NRF method is the extraction of the spectroscopic signals from the solutions of quantum mechanical, semiclassical, or quasiclassical EOMs which govern the time evolution of the material system interacting with the radiation field of the laser pulses. The NRF formalism and its applications to a broad range of material systems and spectroscopic signals have been comprehensively reviewed in the literature. This article provides a detailed review of the suite of EOM methods, including applications to 4-wave-mixing and N-wave-mixing signals detected with weak or strong fields. Under certain circumstances, the spectroscopic EOM methods may be more efficient than the NRF method for the computation of various nonlinear spectroscopic signals.

Strong-pump strong-probe spectroscopy: effects of higher excited electronic states

The present paper is devoted to the simulation of (integral and dispersed) pump-probe signals in the nonperturbative regime for a series of material systems with multiple electronic states and excited-state absorption. We show that strong-pump strong-probe spectroscopy permits the probing of vibrational wavepackets in high-lying and/or short-lived excited electronic states with a time resolution which is not limited by the pulse durations. The field strength can be regarded as an additional experimentally controllable parameter, which can be tuned to maximize the spectroscopic information for a given material system.

Coherent spectroscopy in dissipative media: Time-domain studies of channel phase and signal interferometry

We extend a recently formulated coherence spectroscopy of dissipative media [J. Chem. Phys. 122, 084502 (2005)] from the stationary excitation limit to the time domain. Our results are based on analytical and numerical solutions of the quantum Liouville equation within the Bloch framework. It is shown that the short pulse introduces a new, controllable time scale that allows better insight into the relation between the coherence signal and the phase properties of the material system. We point to the relation between the time-domain coherence spectroscopy and the method of interferometric two-photon photoemission spectroscopy, and propose a variant of the latter method, where the two time-delayed excitation pathways are distinguishable, rather than identical. In particular, we show that distinguishability of the two excitation pathways introduces the new possibility of disentangling decoherence from population relaxation.

Time-dependent alignment of molecules trapped in octahedral crystal fields

The hindered rotational states of molecules confined in crystal fields of octahedral symmetry, and their time-dependent alignment obtained by pulsed nonresonant laser fields, are studied computationally. The control over the molecular axis direction is discussed based on the evolution of the rotational wave packet generated in the cubic crystal-field potential. The alignment degree obtained in a cooperative case, where the alignment field is applied in a favorable crystal-field direction, or in a competitive direction, where the crystal field has a saddle point, is presented. The investigation is divided into two time regimes where the pulse duration is either ultrashort, leading to nonadiabatic dynamics, or long with respect to period of molecular libration, which leads to synchronous alignment due to nearly adiabatic following. The results are contrasted to existing gas phase studies. In particular, the irregularity of the crystal-field energies leads to persistent interference patterns in the alignment signals. The use of nonadiabatic alignment for interrogation of crystal-field energetics and the use of adiabatic alignment for directional control of molecular dynamics in solids are proposed as practical applications.
