Structure determination of small vanadium clusters by density-functional theory in comparison with experimental far-infrared spectra

New Multicomponent Optimization Scheme for Equiatomic Vanadium-Titanium Nanoparticle Study

We present a new multicomponent structure prediction method named MRS-Swap searching, which is inspired by space symmetry and swap of different atomic species. For the pure titanium cluster, a new ground-state structure of the Ti20 cluster with higher symmetry relative to a previous study was found by our method. Based on the structural analysis of Tin (n = 2k, k = 2-11), Vn (n = 2k, k = 2-11), and TinVm (n = m = 2-11) systems, we found that the lowest energy structures of these three systems are very similar, which indicates that equiatomic vanadium-titanium-mixed clusters do not change their ground-state structure relative to the same size pure vanadium and titanium cluster. According to the structure-activity relationship, we conclude that the yield strength (σ) of macro vanadium-titanium alloy is between pure titanium and pure vanadium metal, and this can be expressed through σ(Ti) > σ(TiV) > σ(V). The X-ray diffraction results show that the V2Nb, TiVNb, and Ti2Nb alloys also have the same BCC structure, which may be related to their microstructure. Our method and results can be helpful for future multicomponent alloy design.

Probing adsorption of methane onto vanadium cluster cations via vibrational spectroscopy

Photofragment spectroscopy is used to measure the vibrational spectra of V2+(CH4)n (n = 1-4), V3+(CH4)n (n = 1-3), and Vx+(CH4) (x = 4-8) in the C-H stretching region (2550-3100 cm-1). Spectra are measured by monitoring loss of CH4. The experimental spectra are compared to simulations at the B3LYP+D3/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level of theory to identify the geometry of the ions. Multi-reference configuration interaction with Davidson correction (MRCI+Q) calculations are also carried out on V2+ and V3+. The methane binding orientation in V2+(CH4)n (n = 1-4) evolves from η3 to η2 as more methane molecules are added. The IR spectra of metal-methane clusters can give information on the structure of metal clusters that may otherwise be hard to obtain from isolated clusters. For example, the V3+(CH4)n (n = 1-3) experimental spectra show an additional peak as the second and third methane molecules are added to V3+, which indicates that the metal atoms are not equivalent. The Vx+(CH4) show a larger red shift in the symmetric C-H stretch for larger clusters with x = 5-8 than for the small clusters with x = 2, 3, indicating increased covalency in the interaction of larger vanadium clusters with methane.

Probing the binding and activation of small molecules by gas-phase transition metal clusters via IR spectroscopy

Isolated transition metal clusters have been established as useful models for extended metal surfaces or deposited metal particles, to improve the understanding of their surface chemistry and of catalytic reactions. For this objective, an important milestone has been the development of experimental methods for the size-specific structural characterization of clusters and cluster complexes in the gas phase. This review focusses on the characterization of molecular ligands, their binding and activation by small transition metal clusters, using cluster-size specific infrared action spectroscopy. A comprehensive overview and a critical discussion of the experimental data available to date is provided, reaching from the initial results obtained using line-tuneable CO₂ lasers to present-day studies applying infrared free electron lasers as well as other intense and broadly tuneable IR laser sources.

Vanadium Cluster Neutrals Reacting with Water: Superatomic Features and Hydrogen Evolution in a Fishing Mode

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is known as the heart of various energy storage and conversation systems of renewable energy sources. Here we observe the cluster reactions of a light transition metal, vanadium, with water in a gas-phase flow tube reactor. While HER products of V₁ and V₂ were not observed, the effective HER of water on neutral V_n (n ≥ 3) clusters reveals reasonable and size-dependent reactivity of the vanadium clusters. Superatomic features and reaction dynamics of V₁₀, V₁₃, and V₁₆ are highlighted. Among the three typical superatoms, V₁₀ and V₁₆ exhibit an abnormal superatomic orbital energy level order, 1S|2S|1P|1D..., where the energy-reduced 2S orbital helps to accommodate the geometric structure and hence reinforce the cluster stability. In comparison, V₁₃ bears a less symmetrical structure and reacts readily with water, allowing for recombination of a hydroxyl atom with an adsorbed hydrogen atom, akin to a fishing-mode HER process. The joint experimental and theoretical study on neutral V_n clusters clarifies the availability of superatom chemistry for transition metals and appeals further development of cluster theory based on electronic cloud/orbital analysis instead of simply counting the valence electrons. Also, we provide insights into the HER mechanism of metal clusters and propose a strategy to design new materials for portable fuel cells of hydrogen energy.

Hydrogen release from a single water molecule on Vn+ (3 ≤ n ≤ 30)

Water and its interactions with metals are closely bound up with human life, and the reactivity of metal clusters with water is of fundamental importance for the understanding of hydrogen generation. Here a prominent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of single water molecule on vanadium clusters V_n⁺ (3 ≤ n ≤ 30) is observed in the reaction of cationic vanadium clusters with water at room temperature. The combined experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the wagging vibrations of a V-OH group give rise to readily formed V-O-V intermediate states on V_n⁺ (n ≥ 3) clusters and allow the terminal hydrogen to interact with an adsorbed hydrogen atom, enabling hydrogen release. The presence of three metal atoms reduces the energy barrier of the rate-determining step, giving rise to an effective production of hydrogen from single water molecules. This mechanism differs from dissociative chemisorption of multiple water molecules on aluminium cluster anions, which usually proceeds by dissociative chemisorption of at least two water molecules at multiple surface sites followed by a recombination of the adsorbed hydrogen atoms.

Spectroscopic properties and activated mechanism of NO on isolated cationic tantalum clusters: A first-principles study

The adsorption and dissociation of NO on the cationic Ta₁₅⁺ cluster were investigated using the density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, and the Ta-centered bicapped hexagonal antiprism (BHA) structure of cationic Ta₁₅⁺ cluster can be identified as the global minimum, which reproduces well the infrared multiple photo dissociation (IR-MPD) spectrum. Our results show that the cationic BHATa₁₅⁺ cluster provides the hollow region for NO to interact effectively, and possess larger adsorption strength on the region than other sites. The density of states, charge density differences and frontier molecular orbitals were analyzed to understand the electronic properties of the stable NO-adsorbed isomers. The characteristic IR peaks of the firstly two low-lying isomers are properly assigned, in which the strongest IR peak originates from the N - O stretching vibration. For the dissociation of NO on the BHATa₁₅⁺ cluster, it is found that the reaction path II easily occurs rather than path I due to small reaction barrier, and the cluster may possess the great catalytic behavior to dissociate NO molecule. The present results will inevitably stimulate future theoretical and experimental studies for the design of novel Ta-based catalytic materials for the NO dissociation.

Hydrogenation of 3d-metal oxide clusters: Effects on the structure and magnetic properties

The geometrical structures and properties of the M₈ O₁₂ , M₈ O₁₂ H₈ , and M₈ O₁₂ H₁₂ clusters are explored using density functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation for all 3d-metals M from Sc to Zn. It is found that the geometries and total spin magnetic moments of the clusters depended strongly on the 3d-atom type and the hydrogenation extent. More than the half of all of the 30 clusters had singlet lowest total energy states, which could be described as either nonmagnetic or antiferromagnetic. Hydrogenation increases the total spin magnetic moments of the M₈ O₁₂ H₁₂ clusters when MMnNi, which become larger by four Bohr magneton than those of the corresponding unary clusters M₈ . Hydrogenation substantially affects such properties as polarizability, forbidden band gaps, and dipole moments. Collective superexchange where the local total spin magnetic moments of two atom squads are coupled antiparallel was observed in antiferromagnetic singlet states of Fe₈ O₁₂ H₈ and Co₈ O₁₂ H₈ , whereas the lowest total energy states of their neighbors Mn₈ O₁₂ H₈ and Ni₈ O₁₂ H₈ are ferrimagnetic and ferromagnetic, respectively. Hydrogenation leads to a decrease in the average binding energy per atom when moving across the 3d-metal atom series. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Furthering the reaction mechanism of cationic vanadium clusters towards oxygen

We prepared well-resolved V_n⁺ clusters and clarified the reactivity with oxygen involving both etching effect and building block addition.

Probing the properties of size dependence and correlation for tantalum clusters: geometry, stability, vibrational spectra, magnetism, and electronic structure

A comprehensive investigation on the equilibrium geometry, relative stability, vibrational spectra, and magnetic and electronic properties of neutral tantalum clusters (Ta_n, n = 2–17) was performed using density functional theory (DFT). We perform a study of the size dependence and correlations among those descriptors of parameters, and showed these could provide a novel way to confirm and predict experimental results. Some new isomer configurations that have never been reported before for tantalum clusters were found. The growth behaviors revealed that a compact geometrical growth route is preferred and develops a body-centered-cubic (BCC) structure with the cluster size increasing. The perfectly fitted functional curve, strong linear evolution, and obvious odd–even oscillation behavior proved their corresponding properties depended on the cluster size. Multiple demonstrations of the magic number were confirmed through the correlated relationships with the relative stability, including the second difference in energy, maximum hardness, and minimum polarizability. An inverse evolution trend between the energy gap and electric dipole moment and strong linear correlation between ionization potentials and polarizability indicated the strong correlation between the magnetic and electronic properties. Vibrational spectroscopy as a fingerprint was used to distinguish the ground state among the competitive geometrical isomers close in energy. The charge density difference isosurface, density of states, and molecular orbitals of selected representative clusters were analyzed to investigate the difference and evolutional trend of the relative stability and electronic structure. In addition, we first calculated the ionization potential and magnetic moment and compared these with the current available experimental data for tantalum clusters.

First-Principles Study of Structural, Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Metal-Centered Tetrahexahedral V15⁺ Cluster

The V-centered bicapped hexagonal antiprism structure (A), as the most stable geometry of the cationic V₁₅⁺ cluster, is determined by using infrared multiple photo dissociation (IR-MPD) in combination with density functional theory computations. It is found that the A structure can be stabilized by 18 delocalized 3c-2e σ-bonds on outer V₃ triangles of the bicapped hexagonal antiprism surface and 12 delocalized 4c-2e σ-bonds on inner trigonal pyramidal V₄ moiety, and the features are related to the strong p-d hybridization of the cluster. The total magnetic moments on the cluster are predicted to be 2.0 µ_B, which come mainly from the central vanadium atom.

Consecutive reactions of small, free tantalum clusters with dioxygen controlled by relaxation dynamics

The reaction of small cationic tantalum clusters (Ta_n⁺, n = 4–8) with molecular oxygen is studied under multi-collision conditions in the gas phase, and the reaction kinetics are analyzed in order to elucidate underlying mechanisms.

A vanadium(IV) pyrazolate metal-organic polyhedron with permanent porosity and adsorption selectivity

A vanadium(IV) pyrazolate-based open metal-organic polyhedron of [V3(μ3-O)O(OH)2(μ4-BPD)1.5(μ-HCOO)3] (BDP = benzene-1,4-bipyrazolate) formulation gives rise to a porous crystal structure exhibiting micro and mesoporosity which is useful for selective adsorption of gases.

Nature of the interaction between rare gas atoms and transition metal doped silicon clusters: the role of shielding effects

Density functional calculations and mass spectrometry reveal the role of a shielding effect from s-character electrons in the complexation between rare gas (Ar, Xe) and Si_nMn⁺ (n = 6–10), Si₇TM⁺ (TM = Cr, Mn, Cu and Zn).

Monoxides of small terbium clusters: a density functional theory investigation

To investigate the effect of oxygen atom on the geometrical structures, electronic, and magnetic properties of small terbium clusters, we carried out the first-principles calculations on TbnO (n = 1-14) clusters. The capping of an oxygen atom on one trigonal-facet of Tbn structures is always favored energetically, which can significantly improve the structural stability. The far-infrared vibrational spectroscopies are found to be different from those of corresponding bare clusters, providing a distinct signal to detect the characteristic structures of TbnO clusters. The primary effect of oxygen atom on magnetic properties is to change the magnetic orderings among Tb atoms and to reduce small of local magnetic moments of the O-coordinated Tb atoms, both of which serve as the key reasons for the experimental magnetic evolution of an oscillating behavior. These calculations are consistent with, and help to account for, the experimentally observed magnetic properties of monoxide TbnO clusters [C. N. Van Dijk et al., J. Appl. Phys. 107, 09B526 (2010)].

Invited review article: laser vaporization cluster sources

The laser vaporization cluster source has been used for the production of gas phase atomic clusters and metal-molecular complexes for 30 years. Numerous experiments in the chemistry and physics of clusters have employed this source. Its operation is simple in principle, but there are many subtle design features that influence the number and size of clusters produced, as well as their composition, charge state, and temperature. This article examines all aspects of the design of these cluster sources, discussing the relevant chemistry, physics, and mechanical aspects of experimental configurations employed by different labs. The principles detailed here provide a framework for the design and implementation of this source for new applications.

Vibrational spectroscopy of bare and solvated ionic complexes of biological relevance

The low density of ions in mass spectrometers generally precludes direct infrared (IR) absorption measurements. The IR spectrum of an ion can nonetheless be obtained by inducing photodissociation of the ion using a high-intensity tunable laser. The emergence of free electron lasers (FELs) and recent breakthroughs in bench-top lasers based on nonlinear optics have now made it possible to routinely record IR spectra of gas-phase ions. As the energy of one IR photon is insufficient to cause dissociation of molecules and strongly bound complexes, two main experimental strategies have been developed to effect photodissociation. In infrared multiple-photon dissociation (IR-MPD) many photons are absorbed resonantly and their energy is stored in the bath of vibrational modes, leading to dissociation. In the "messenger" technique a weakly bound van der Waals atom is detached upon absorption of a single photon. Fundamental, historical, and practical aspects of these methods will be presented. Both of these approaches make use of very different methods of ion preparation and manipulation. While in IR-MPD ions are irradiated in trapping mass spectrometers, the "messenger" technique is generally carried out in molecular beam instruments. The main focus of this review is the application of IR spectroscopy to biologically relevant molecular systems (amino acids, peptides, proteins). Particular issues that will be addressed here include gas-phase zwitterions, the (chemical) structures of peptides and their collision-induced dissociation (CID) products, IR spectra of gas-phase proteins, and the chelation of metal-ligand complexes. Another growing area of research is IR spectroscopy on solvated clusters, which offer a bridge between the gas-phase and solution environments. The development of state-of-the-art computational approaches has gone hand-in-hand with advances in experimental techniques. The main advantage of gas-phase cluster research, as opposed to condensed-phase experiments, is that the systems of interest can be understood in detail and structural effects can be studied in isolation. It will be shown that IR spectroscopy of mass-selected (bio)molecular systems is now well-placed to address specific questions on the individual effect of charge carriers (protons and metal ions), as well as solvent molecules on the overall structure.

H2 adsorption on 3d transition metal clusters: a combined infrared spectroscopy and density functional study

The adsorption of H2 on a series of gas-phase transition metal (scandium, vanadium, iron, cobalt, and nickel) clusters containing up to 20 metal atoms is studied using IR-multiple photon dissociation spectroscopy complemented with density functional theory based calculations. Comparison of the experimental and calculated spectra gives information on hydrogen-bonding geometries. The adsorption of H2 is found to be exclusively dissociative on Sc(n)O+, V(n)+, Fe(n)+, and Co(n)+, and both atomic and molecularly chemisorbed hydrogen is present in Ni(n)H(m)+ complexes. It is shown that hydrogen adsorption geometries depend on the elemental composition as well as on the cluster size and that the adsorption sites are different for clusters and extended surfaces. In contrast to what is observed for extended metal surfaces, where hydrogen has a preference for high coordination sites, hydrogen can be both 2- or 3-fold coordinated to cationic metal clusters.

Structural isomers and reactivity for Rh6 and Rh6+

The structure, energetics, and interconversion of isomers of Rh(6) and Rh(6)(+) are studied by using density functional theory with Gaussian basis sets, using guess structures derived from basin-hopping simulations, and obtained by using the Sutton-Chen potential. A large range of spin multiplicities is considered for each isomer. Our calculations suggest two low-lying structures as possible structural isomers: a square bipyramid and a trigonal prism. The reactivity of these two candidate structural isomers with respect to adsorption of nitric oxide is studied via location of reaction transition states and calculation of reaction barriers. Similarities and differences with surface reaction studies are highlighted. These data provide powerful evidence that structural isomerism, and not different spin states, is responsible for the observed biexponential reaction kinetics.

Dynamics of Clusters Initiated by Photon and Surface Impact

Clusters of atoms/molecules show dynamics characteristic of the method of excitation. Two contrasted processes are discussed: (1) electronic excitation via single-photon absorption and (2) impulsive excitation of nuclear motions by surface impact. Process 1 is exemplified by photodissociation dynamics of size-selected metal cluster ions. The electronic energy is converted most likely to vibrational energy of internal modes; dissociation follows via statistical mechanism to produce energetically favored fragments. Exceptionally, a silver cluster ion, Ag4(+), is shown to undergo nonstatistical dissociation along the potential-energy surface of the excited state. Energy partitioning to translational and vibrational modes of fragments is analyzed as well as bond dissociation energies. Furthermore, the spectrum of the photodissociation yield provides electronic and geometrical structures of a cluster with the aid of ab initio calculations; manganese, Mn(N)(+), and chromium, Cr(N)(+), cluster ions are discussed, where the importance of magnetic interactions is manifested. On the other hand, momentum transfer upon surface impact plays a role in process 2. An impulsive mechanical force triggers extraordinary chemical processes distinct from those initiated by atomic collision as well as photoexcitation. Experiments on aluminum, Al(N)(-), silicon, SiN(-), and solvated, I(2)(-)(CO2)(N), cluster anions provide evidence for reactions proceeding under extremely high temperatures, such as pickup of surface atoms, annealing of products, and mechanical splitting of chemical bonds. In addition, a model experiment to visualize and time-resolve the cluster impact process is performed by using a micrometer-sized liquid droplet. Multiphoton absorption initiates superheating of the droplet surface followed by a shock wave and disintegration into a number of small fragments (shattering). These studies further reveal how the nature of chemical bonds influences the dynamics of clusters.

Hydrogen-Induced Transition from Dissociative to Molecular Chemisorption of CO on Vanadium Clusters

We report on the size-dependent interaction of carbon monoxide molecules with hydrogen covered vanadium clusters containing between 5 and 20 atoms. Structural information on these hydrogen covered vanadium clusters and their complexes with CO is obtained from infrared multiple photon dissociation spectroscopy, complemented with density functional theory calculations for the V5 to V9 cluster sizes. The non-dissociative or dissociative binding of CO on the metal clusters is detected by the presence or absence of the nu(CO) stretching band in the infrared spectra. It is found that the CO molecule dissociates on bare vanadium clusters, while it adsorbs intact on all saturated hydrogen covered V5-20+ clusters, with the distinctive exceptions of V5+, V9+, V11+, and V19+. We show that dissociative chemisorption is prevented when the potential binding sites of atomic C and O atoms are blocked by H atoms.
