Density functional theory for transition metals and transition metal chemistry

We introduce density functional theory and review recent progress in its application to transition metal chemistry. Topics covered include local, meta, hybrid, hybrid meta, and range-separated functionals, band theory, software, validation tests, and applications to spin states, magnetic exchange coupling, spectra, structure, reactivity, and catalysis, including molecules, clusters, nanoparticles, surfaces, and solids.

Dynamics of charge transfer: rate processes formulated with nonequilibrium Green's functions

The authors examine the connection between electron transport under bias in a junction and nonadiabatic intramolecular electron transfer (ET). It is shown that under certain assumptions it is possible to define a stationary current that allows the computation of the intramolecular transfer rate using the same formalism that is employed in the description of transport. They show that the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism of quantum transport can be used to calculate the ET rate. The formal connection between electron transport and electron transfer is made, and they work out the simple case of an electronic level coupled to a vibrational mode representing a thermal bath and show that the result is the same as expected from a Fermi golden rule treatment, and in the high-temperature limit yields the Marcus electron transfer theory. The usefulness of this alternative formulation of rates is discussed.

Two-dimensional infrared surface spectroscopy for CO on Cu(100): Detection of intermolecular coupling of adsorbates

Surface-specific infrared signals obtained by subjecting the system to two infrared laser pulses are calculated for an admixture of CO and isotopic CO on Cu(100) by using molecular dynamics simulation based on a stability matrix formalism. The two-dimensional profiles of the signals in the frequency domain show both diagonal and cross peaks. The former peaks mainly arise from the overtones of the CO and isotopic CO, while the latter represent the couplings between those. As temperature is increased, the phases of cross peaks in a second-order infrared response function change significantly, while those of diagonal peaks are unchanged. The authors show that the phase shifts are originated from the potential anharmonicities due to the electronic interaction between adsorbates. Using a model with two dipole moments, they find that the frustrated rotational mode activated with temperature has effects on the anharmonicity. These results indicate that two-dimensional infrared surface spectroscopy reveals the anharmonic couplings between adsorbates and surface atoms or between adsorbates which cannot be observed in first-order spectroscopy.

An efficient molecular orbital approach for self-consistent calculations of molecular junctions

To model electron transport through a molecular junction, we propose an efficient method using an ab initio self-consistent nonequilibrium Green's function theory combined with density functional theory. We have adopted a model close to the extended molecule approach, due to its flexibility, but have improved on the problems relating to molecule-surface couplings and the long-range potential via a systematic procedure for the same ab initio level as that of Green's function. The resulting algorithm involves three main steps: (i) construction of the embedding potential; (ii) perturbation expansion of Green's function in the molecular orbital basis; and (iii) truncation of the molecular orbital space by separating it into inactive, active, and virtual spaces. The above procedures directly reduce the matrix size of Green's function for the self-consistent calculation step, and thus, the algorithm is suitable for application to large molecular systems.

Theoretical study of the photodesorption mechanism of nitric oxide on a Ag(111) surface: A nonequilibrium Green’s function approach to hot-electron tunneling

The photoinduced desorption of NO molecules on a Ag surface was studied theoretically using a recently developed method based on the nonequilibrium Green's function approach combined with the density functional theory. Geometry optimizations for the stable NO dimer phase were carried out, and two structures of adsorbed dimers were identified. We calculated the reaction probabilities as a function of incident photon energy for each of the dimers and compared them with experimental action spectra. The two main features of the action spectra, (i) a long tail to the long wavelength (approximately 600 nm) and (ii) a rapid increase at approximately 350 nm, were well reproduced. By theoretical analysis, we found the importance of quantum interference for the interfacial charge transfer between the metal substrate and the adsorbate, as well as the contribution of secondary electrons. Our calculations suggest that the photoactive species is dimeric and that the resonant level is single for the photodesorption of NO.
