Abstract
CONTEXT The study of molecular aggregation effects on the electronic spectrum is essential for the development of optoelectronic devices. However, investigating the entire valence absorption spectrum of aggregates using quantum mechanical methods is a challenging task. In this work, we perform systematic simulations of the absorption spectrum of benzene molecular clusters up to 35 eV applying two approaches based on time-dependent density functional theory. The results show that depending on the dimer packing, different energy shifts occur for the symmetry allowed [Formula: see text] transition, in comparison to the monomer. The transition intensity increases for the band around 6 eV for larger aggregates from the monomer to dimers and tetramer, indicating the occurrence of the symmetry forbidden (in [Formula: see text] point group) [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] transition. The benzene crystal exhibits a large redshift following the experimental spectrum. Also, the continuum regions of all spectra show a good agreement with the experiments both in gas and solid phases. METHODS Geometry optimization of the monomer was carried out with Gaussian 09 software using the PBE0/def2-TZVP level of theory. We used dimers and tetramer molecular geometries extracted from the experimental crystal structure. The absorption spectra were directly obtained by the Liouville-Lanczos TDDFT approach with plane waves basis set or indirectly by TDDFT pseudo-spectra calculated in a [Formula: see text] basis followed by analytic continuation procedure to obtain complex polarizability. The former is available at Quantum ESPRESSO, and the latter was calculated using Gaussian 09 with the post-processing performed with a code previously developed in our group.

Abstract
We explore the merits of linear-response range-separated time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) for the calculation of photoionization spectra. We consider two variants of range-separated TDDFT, namely, the time-dependent range-separated hybrid (TDRSH) scheme, which uses a global range-separation parameter, and the time-dependent locally range-separated hybrid (TDLRSH), which uses a local range-separation parameter, and compare with standard time-dependent local-density approximation (TDLDA) and time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF). We show how to calculate photoionization spectra with these methods using the Sternheimer approach formulated in a non-orthogonal B-spline basis set with appropriate frequency-dependent boundary conditions. We illustrate these methods on the photoionization spectrum of the Be atom, focusing, in particular, on the core resonances. Both the TDRSH and TDLRSH photoionization spectra are found to constitute a large improvement over the TDLDA photoionization spectrum and a more modest improvement over the TDHF photoionization spectrum.

Abstract
A multicenter (LCAO) B-spline basis is described in detail, and its capabilities concerning affording convergent solutions for electronic continuum states and wavepacket propagation are presented. It forms the core of the Tiresia code, which implements static-DFT and TDDFT hamiltonians, as well as single channel Dyson-DFT and Dyson-TDDFT descriptions to include correlation in the bound states. Together they afford accurate and computationally efficient descriptions of photoionization properties of complex systems, both in the single photon and strong field environments. A number of examples are provided.

Abstract
Chiral transition-metal complexes are of interest in many fields ranging from asymmetric catalysis and molecular materials science to optoelectronic applications or fundamental physics including parity violation effects. We present here a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of gas-phase valence-shell photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) on the challenging open-shell ruthenium(III)-tris-(acetylacetonato) complex, Ru(acac)3. Enantiomerically pure Δ- or Λ-Ru(acac)3, characterized by electronic circular dichroism (ECD), were vaporized and adiabatically expanded to produce a supersonic beam and photoionized by circularly-polarized VUV light from the DESIRS beamline at Synchrotron SOLEIL. Photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and PECD experiments were conducted using a double imaging electron/ion coincidence spectrometer, and compared to density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations. The open-shell character of Ru(acac)3, which is not taken into account in our DFT approach, is expected to give rise to a wide multiplet structure, which is not resolved in our PES signals but whose presence might be inferred from the additional striking features observed in the PECD curves. Nevertheless, the DFT-based assignment of the electronic bands leads to the characterisation of the ionized orbitals. In line with other recent works, the results confirm that PECD persists independently on the localization and/or on the achiral or chiral nature of the initial orbital, but is rather a probe of the molecular potential as a whole. Overall, the measured PECD signals on Ru(acac)3, a system exhibiting D3 propeller-type chirality, are of similar magnitude compared to those on asymmetric-carbon-based chiral organic molecules which constitute the vast majority of species investigated so far, thus suggesting that PECD is a universal mechanism, inherent to any type of chirality.

Abstract
A highly correlated combination of the equation-of-motion coupled cluster (EOM-CC) Dyson orbital and the multicentric B-spline time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT)-based approach is proposed and implemented within the single-channel approximation to describe molecular photoionization processes. The twofold objective of the approach is to capture interchannel coupling effects, missing in the B-spline DFT treatment, and to explore the response of Dyson orbitals to strong correlation effects and its influence on the photoionization observables. We validate our scheme by computing partial cross sections, branching ratios, asymmetry parameters, and molecular frame photoelectron angular distributions of simple molecules. Finally, the method has been applied to the study of photoelectron spectra of the Ni(C3H5)2 molecule, where giant correlation effects completely destroy the Koopmans picture.

Abstract
The photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) of the O 1s-photoelectrons of trifluoromethyloxirane (TFMOx) is studied experimentally and theoretically for different photoelectron kinetic energies. The experiments were performed employing circularly polarized synchrotron radiation and coincident electron and fragment ion detection using cold target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy. The corresponding calculations were performed by means of the single center method within the relaxed-core Hartree-Fock approximation. We concentrate on the energy dependence of the differential PECD of uniaxially oriented TFMOx molecules, which is accessible through the employed coincident detection. We also compare the results for the differential PECD of TFMOx to those obtained for the equivalent fragmentation channel and similar photoelectron kinetic energy of methyloxirane (MOx), studied in our previous work. Thereby, we investigate the influence of the substitution of the methyl group by the trifluoromethyl group at the chiral center on the molecular chiral response. Finally, the presently obtained angular distribution parameters are compared to those available in the literature.

Abstract
The perceived dichotomy between analytical and ab initio approaches to theory in attosecond science is often seen as a source of tension and misconceptions. This Topical Review compiles the discussions held during a round-table panel at the 'Quantum Battles in Attoscience' cecam virtual workshop, to explore the sources of tension and attempt to dispel them. We survey the main theoretical tools of attoscience-covering both analytical and numerical methods-and we examine common misconceptions, including the relationship between ab initio approaches and the broader numerical methods, as well as the role of numerical methods in 'analytical' techniques. We also evaluate the relative advantages and disadvantages of analytical as well as numerical and ab initio methods, together with their role in scientific discovery, told through the case studies of two representative attosecond processes: non-sequential double ionisation and resonant high-harmonic generation. We present the discussion in the form of a dialogue between two hypothetical theoreticians, a numericist and an analytician, who introduce and challenge the broader opinions expressed in the attoscience community.

Abstract
![]()
The
photoionization dynamics of OsO4 and RuO4, chosen
as model systems of small-size mononuclear heavy-metal complexes,
has been theoretically studied by the time-dependent density functional
theory (TDDFT). Accurate experimental measurements of photoionization
dynamics as a benchmarking test for the theory are reported for the
photoelectron asymmetry parameters of outer valence ionizations of
OsO4, measured in the 17–90 eV photon energy range.
The theoretical results are in good agreement with the available experimental
data. The observed dynamical behavior of partial cross sections and
asymmetry parameters has been related to both the coupling to the
continuum of discrete excited states, giving strong modulations in
the photon energy dependency, and the atomic composition of the initial
ionized states, which determines the rate of decay of ionization probability
for increasing excitation energies. Overall, an extensive analysis
of the photoionization dynamics for valence and core orbitals is presented,
showing good agreement with all the available experimental data. This
provides confidence for the validity of the TDDFT approach in describing
photoionization of heavy transition element compounds, with the perspective
of being used for larger systems. Further experimental work is suggested
for RuO4 to gather evidence of the sensitivity of the theoretical
method to the nature of the metal atom. In this work,
the time-dependent density functional theory
is used to calculate the photoionization dynamics of the valence and
core ionizations of OsO4 and RuO4 complexes,
which are chosen as model systems of small-size mononuclear heavy-metal
complexes. Accurate experimental measurements of the branching ratios
and photoelectron asymmetry parameters of outer valence ionizations
of OsO4 provide a sound benchmark of the computational
methodology.

Abstract
Calculations of the photoionization cross section and asymmetry parameter, β, are performed at the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) levels for all 32 valence levels of C60. Accurate numerical results are obtained for the isolated molecule in icosahedral symmetry. A detailed analysis based on the comparison between the DFT and TDDFT results allows the identification of four types of resonances: the well-known confinement resonances of mainly geometrical origin, shape resonances native to the ionization channel, induced shape resonances, and autoionization resonances brought about by interchannel coupling, as well as their different prominence in cross section or asymmetry parameter. Generally, cross sections are enhanced at the TDDFT level, which includes contribution from the bound-state excitations from closed channels, neglected at the DFT level, and the effect persists even well above the highest ionization threshold. This effect is best seen in the total cross section, although not as dramatic as found from simpler models, probably due to the stiffer electronic structure inherent in the full molecular description. The effects of interchannel coupling on individual native resonances are rather less predictable, leading to both enhancement and decreases and often altering the details of the structure significantly. A comparison with the previous accurate total cross-sectional calculations, as well as with the available experimental data, is very good for cross sections but slightly inferior for β's. The results reported can serve as a reference to compare the effects of different environments on C60, as well as chemical substitution, notably endohedral fullerenes.

Abstract
Carbon 1s photoelectron angular distributions of an iodomethane molecule were measured relative to the recoil-frame determined by the momentum correlation between I+ and CH3 + at photoelectron energies of 3, 6.1, and 12 eV. The energy dependent behavior of the recoil-frame photoelectron angular distributions is reproduced reasonably well by the time-dependent density functional theory with B-spline methods. We discuss potential applications of the fully differential photoelectron angular distribution measurements in the molecular frame to three-dimensional molecular structural determinations identifying the directions and lengths of the bonds.

Abstract
Herein is presented a new approach to the ab initio algebraic diagrammatic construction (ADC) schemes for the polarization propagator, which is explicitly designed to accurately and efficiently describe molecular ionization. The restricted correlation space (RCS) version of the ADC methods up to second order of perturbation theory is derived via the intermediate state representation (ISR) and implemented in the multicenter B-spline basis set for the electronic continuum. Remarkably a general close-coupling structure of the RCS-ADC many-electron wave function, connecting the N-particle to the ( N - 1)-particle ADC intermediate states, emerges naturally as a nontrivial result of the RCS ansatz. Moreover, the introduced RCS-ADC schemes prove to be particularly manageable from a computational point of view, overcoming the practical limitations of the conventional ADC approaches. The quality of the new RCS-ADC( n) approaches is verified by performing a series of total photoionization cross-section calculations on a test set of molecules. The excellent agreement of the results with existing accurate benchmarks demonstrates that the RCS versions of the ADC schemes are optimal and quantitatively accurate methods for studying multichannel molecular photoionization.

Abstract
Ionization in the condensed phase and molecular clusters leads to a complicated chain of processes with coupled electron-nuclear dynamics. It is difficult to describe such dynamics with conventional nonadiabatic molecular dynamics schemes since the number of states swiftly increases as the molecular system grows. It is therefore attractive to use a direct electron and nuclear propagation such as the real-time time-dependent density functional theory (RT-TDDFT). Here we report a RT-TDDFT benchmark study on simulations of singly and doubly ionized states of a water monomer and dimer as a prototype for more complex processes in a condensed phase. We employed the RT-TDDFT based Ehrenfest molecular dynamics with a generalized gradient approximate (GGA) functional and compared it with wave-function-based surface hopping (SH) simulations. We found that the initial dynamics of a singly HOMO ionized water dimer is similar for both the RT-TDDFT/GGA and the SH simulations but leads to completely different reaction channels on a longer time scale. This failure is attributed to the self-interaction error in the GGA functionals and it can be avoided by using hybrid functionals with large fraction of exact exchange (represented here by the BHandHLYP functional). The simulations of doubly ionized states are reasonably described already at the GGA level. This suggests that the RT-TDDFT/GGA method could describe processes following the autoionization processes such as Auger emission, while its applicability to more complex processes such as intermolecular Coulombic decay remains limited.

Abstract
Photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) is a novel type of spectroscopy, which presents surprising sensitivity to conformational effects in chiral systems. While classical photoelectron spectroscopy mainly responds to conformational effects in terms of energy level shifts, PECD provides a rich and detailed response to tiny changes in electronic and structural properties by means of the intensity dispersion of the circular dichroism as a function of photoelectron kinetic energy. In this work, the basics of PECD will be outlined, emphasizing the role of interference from the [Formula: see text] outgoing partial wave of the photoelectron in the PECD transition matrix element, which is responsible for the extreme sensitivity to conformational effects. Examples using molecular systems and interfaces will shed light on the powerful application of PECD to classical conformational effects such as group substitution, isomerism, conformer population and clustering. Moreover, the PECD results will be reported in challenging new fields where conformations play a key role, such as vibrational effects, transient chirality and time- resolved experiments. To date, PECD has mostly been based on synchrotron radiation facilities, but it also has a future as a table-top lab experiment by means of multiphoton ionization. An important application of PECD as an analytical tool will be reported. The aim of this review is to illustrate that in PECD, the presence of conformational effects is essential for understanding a wide range of effects from a new perspective, making it different from classical spectroscopy.

Abstract
Accurate theoretical calculation of photoelectron angular distributions for general molecules is becoming an important tool to image various chemical reactions in real time. We show in this article that not only photoionization total cross sections but also photoelectron angular distributions can be accurately calculated using complex Gauss-type orbital (cGTO) basis functions. Our method can be easily combined with existing quantum chemistry techniques including electron correlation effects, and applied to various molecules. The so-called two-potential formula is applied to represent the transition dipole moment from an initial bound state to a final continuum state in the molecular coordinate frame. The two required continuum functions, the zeroth-order final continuum state and the first-order wave function induced by the photon field, have been variationally obtained using the complex basis function method with a mixture of appropriate cGTOs and conventional real Gauss-type orbitals (GTOs) to represent the continuum orbitals as well as the remaining bound orbitals. The complex orbital exponents of the cGTOs are optimized by fitting to the outgoing Coulomb functions. The efficiency of the current method is demonstrated through the calculations of the asymmetry parameters and molecular-frame photoelectron angular distributions of H2+ and H2 . In the calculations of H2 , the static exchange and random phase approximations are employed, and the dependence of the results on the basis functions is discussed. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
Real-space grids are a powerful alternative for the simulation of electronic systems. One of the main advantages of the approach is the flexibility and simplicity of working directly in real space where the different fields are discretized on a grid, combined with competitive numerical performance and great potential for parallelization. These properties constitute a great advantage at the time of implementing and testing new physical models. Based on our experience with the Octopus code, in this article we discuss how the real-space approach has allowed for the recent development of new ideas for the simulation of electronic systems. Among these applications are approaches to calculate response properties, modeling of photoemission, optimal control of quantum systems, simulation of plasmonic systems, and the exact solution of the Schrödinger equation for low-dimensionality systems.

Abstract
The sudden ionization of a molecule by an attosecond pulse is followed by charge redistribution on a time scale from a few femtoseconds down to hundreds of attoseconds. This ultrafast redistribution is the result of the coherent superposition of electronic continua associated with the ionization thresholds that are reached by the broadband attosecond pulse. Thus, a correct theoretical description of the time evolution of the ensuing wave packet requires the knowledge of the actual ionization amplitudes associated with all open ionization channels, a real challenge for large and medium-size molecules. Recently, the first calculation of this kind has come to light, allowing for interpretation of ultrafast electron dynamics observed in attosecond pump–probe experiments performed on the amino acid phenylalanine [Calegari et al., Science 2014, 346, 336]. However, as in most previous theoretical works, the interpretation was based on various simplifying assumptions, namely, the ionized electron was not included in the description of the cation dynamics, the nuclei were fixed at their initial position during the hole migration process, and the effect of the IR probe pulse was ignored. Here we go a step further and discuss the consequences of including these effects in the photoionization of the glycine molecule. We show that (i) the ionized electron does not affect hole dynamics beyond the first femtosecond, and (ii) nuclear dynamics has only a significant effect after approximately 8 fs, but does not destroy the coherent motion of the electronic wave packet during at least few additional tens of fs. As a first step towards understanding the role of the probe pulse, we have considered an XUV probe pulse, instead of a strong IR one, and show that such an XUV probe does not introduce significant distortions in the pump-induced dynamics, suggesting that pump–probe strategies are suitable for imaging and manipulating charge migration in complex molecules. Furthermore, we show that hole dynamics can be changed by shaping the attosecond pump pulse, thus opening the door to the control of charge dynamics in biomolecules.

Abstract
The complex Kohn and polyatomic Schwinger variational techniques have been employed to illustrate the interchannel coupling correlation effects in the valence photoionization dynamics of SF6. Partial photoionization cross sections and asymmetry parameters of six valence subshells (1t1g, 5t1u, 1t2u, 3eg, 1t2g, 4t1u) are discussed in the framework of several theoretical and experimental studies. The complex Kohn results are in rather good agreement with experimental results, indicative of the fact that the interchannel coupling effects alter the photoionization dynamics significantly. We find that the dominant effect of interchannel coupling is to reduce the magnitude of shape resonant cross sections near the threshold and to induce resonant features in other channels to which resonances are coupled. The long-standing issue concerning ordering of the valence orbitals is addressed and confirmed 4t1u (6)1t2g (6)3eg (4)(5t1u (6)+1t2u (6)) 1t1g (6) as the most likely ordering.

Abstract
Electronic core levels in molecules are highly localized around one atomic site. However, in single-photon ionization of symmetric molecules, the question of core-hole localization versus delocalization over two equivalent atoms has long been debated as the answer lies at the heart of quantum mechanics. Here, using a joint experimental and theoretical study of core-ionized carbon disulfide (CS2), we demonstrate that it is possible to experimentally select distinct molecular-fragmentation pathways in which the core hole can be considered as either localized on one sulfur atom or delocalized between two indistinguishable sulfur atoms. This feat is accomplished by measuring photoelectron angular distributions within the frame of the molecule, directly probing entanglement or disentanglement of quantum pathways as a function of how the molecule dissociates.

Abstract
Carbon 1s photoelectron spectra for 2-butyne (CH3C≡CCH3) measured in the photon energy range from threshold to 150 eV above threshold show oscillations in the intensity ratio C2,3/C1,4. Similar oscillations have been seen in chloroethanes, where the effect has been attributed to EXAFS-type scattering from the substituent chlorine atoms. In 2-butyne, however, there is no high-Z atom to provide a scattering center and, hence, oscillations of the magnitude observed are surprising. The results have been analyzed in terms of two different theoretical models: a density-functional model with B-spline atom-centered functions to represent the continuum electrons and a multiple-scattering model using muffin-tin potentials to represent the scattering centers. Both methods give a reasonable description of the energy dependence of the intensity ratios.

Abstract
Interferences in coherent emission of photoelectrons from two equivalent atomic centers in a molecule are the microscopic analogies of the celebrated Young's double-slit experiment. By considering inner-valence shell ionization in the series of simple hydrocarbons C2H2, C2H4, and C2H6, we show that double-slit interference is widespread and has built-in quantitative information on geometry, orbital composition, and many-body effects. A theoretical and experimental study is presented over the photon energy range of 70-700 eV. A strong dependence of the oscillation period on the C-C distance is observed, which can be used to determine bond lengths between selected pairs of equivalent atoms with an accuracy of at least 0.01 Å. Furthermore, we show that the observed oscillations are directly informative of the nature and atomic composition of the inner-valence molecular orbitals and that observed ratios are quantitative measures of elusive many-body effects. The technique and analysis can be immediately extended to a large class of compounds.

Abstract
We have measured the angular correlation between the B K-VV Auger electrons of BF(3) molecules and the coincident fragment-ion pairs of BF(2)(+)-F(+). Then, we have found that the measured angular correlation patterns depending on the mutual angle between the light polarization direction and molecular orientation are affected by the anisotropic axis distribution of the molecular ensemble of BF(3)(+) reflecting the anisotropic nature of photon-molecule interaction. In this context, we have pointed out generally that for coincidence experiments, so-called molecular frame Auger electron angular distributions are realized only if the axis distribution of the molecular ion ensemble is isotropic.

Abstract
A sizable enhancement of the circular dichroism in photoelectron spectroscopy has been measured and computed for the metal complex Δ-cobalt(III) tris-acetylacetonate highest occupied molecular orbital state in the region of the Co 3p→3d Fano resonance. In the resonance the dichroism reaches the maximum value of 5% and even changes its sign as compared to the direct photoionization channel. We ascribe this enhancement to electron correlation processes, namely, with the coupling between discrete excitations and the continuum, which is correctly described in the time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) framework. These findings open new physical aspects of photoelectron circular dichroism that now can be interpreted not only via the simple direct ionization, but also through more complex electron correlation processes.
