Abstract
The state-resolved photodissociation of NO2via the 12B2 and 22B2 excited states has been investigated by using time-sliced velocity-mapped ion imaging technique. The images of the O(3PJ=2,1,0) products at a series of excitation wavelengths are measured by employing a 1 + 1' photoionization scheme. The total kinetic energy release (TKER) spectra, NO vibrational state distributions and anisotropy parameters (β) are derived from the O(3PJ=2,1,0) images. For the 12B2 state photodissociation of NO2, the TKER spectra mainly present a non-statistical vibrational state distribution of the NO co-products, and the profiles of most vibrational peaks display a bimodal structure. The β values show a gradual decrease with the photolysis wavelength increasing except for a sudden increase at 357.38 nm. The results suggest that the NO2 photodissociation via the 12B2 state proceeds via the non-adiabatic transition between the 12B2 and X̃2A1 states, leading to the NO(X2Π) + O(3PJ) products with wavelength-dependent rovibrational distributions. As for photodissociation of NO2via the 22B2 state, the NO vibrational state distribution is relatively narrow with the main peak shifting from v = 1, 2 at 235.43-249.22 nm to v = 6 at 212.56 nm. The β values exhibit two distinctly different angular distributions, i.e., near isotropic at 249.22 and 246.09 nm and anisotropic at the rest of the excitation wavelengths. These results are consistent with the fact that the 22B2 state potential energy surface has a barrier, and the dissociation process is fast when the initial populated level is above this barrier. A bimodal vibrational state distribution is clearly observed at 212.56 nm, in which the main distribution (peaking at v = 6) is ascribed to dissociation via an avoided crossing with the higher electronically excited state while the subsidiary distribution (peaking at v = 11) likely arises due to dissociation via the internal conversion to the 12B2 state or to the X̃ ground state.

Abstract
We present an experimental femtosecond time-resolved study of the 399 nm excited state dynamics of nitrogen dioxide using channel-resolved above threshold ionization (CRATI) as the probe process. This method relies on photoelectron-photoion coincidence and covariance to correlate the strong-field photoelectron spectrum with ionic fragments, which label the channel. In all ionization channels observed, we report apparent oscillations in the ion and photoelectron yields as a function of pump-probe delay. Further, we observe the presence of a persistent, time-invariant above threshold ionization comb in the photoelectron spectra associated with most ionization channels at long time delays. These observations are interpreted in terms of single-pump-photon excitation to the first excited electronic X̃ 2A1 state and multi-pump-photon excitations to higher-lying states. The short time delay (<100 fs) dynamics in the fragment channels show multi-photon pump signatures of higher-lying neutral state dynamics, in data sets recorded with higher pump intensities. As expected for pumping NO2 at 399 nm, non-adiabatic coupling was seen to rapidly re-populate the ground state following excitation to the first excited electronic state, within 200 fs. Subsequent intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution results in the spreading of the ground state vibrational wavepacket into the asymmetric stretch coordinate, allowing the wavepacket to explore nuclear geometries in the asymptotic region of the ground state potential energy surface. Signatures of the vibrationally "hot" ground state wavepacket were observed in the CRATI spectra at longer time delays. This study highlights the complex and sometimes competing phenomena that can arise in strong-field ionization probing of excited state molecular dynamics.

Abstract
We extend the a(q) (k)(s) polarization parameter model [T. P. Rakitzis and A. J. Alexander, J. Chem. Phys. 132, 224310 (2010)] to describe the components of the product angular momentum polarization that arise from the one-photon photodissociation of asymmetric top molecules with circularly polarized photolysis light, and provide a general equation for fitting experimental signals. We show that the only polarization parameters that depend on the helicity of the circularly polarized photolysis light are the A(0) (k) and Re[A(1) (k)] (with odd k) and the Im[A(1) (k)] (with even k); in addition, for the unique recoil destination (URD) approximation [for which the photofragment recoil v arises from a unique parent molecule geometry], we show that these parameters arise only as a result the interference between at least two dissociative electronic states. Furthermore, we show that in the breakdown of the URD approximation (for which the photofragment recoil v arises from a distribution of parent molecule geometries), these parameters can also arise for dissociation via a single dissociative electronic state. In both cases, the A(0) (k) and Re[A(1) (k)] parameters (with odd k) are proportional to cosΔφ, and the Im[A(1) (k)] parameters (with even k) are proportional to sinΔφ, where Δφ is the phase shift (or average phase shift) between the interfering paths so that Δφ can be determined directly from the A(q) (k), or from ratios of these A(q) (k) parameters. Therefore, the determination of these A(q) (k) parameters with circularly polarized photolysis light allows the unambiguous measurement of coherent effects in polyatomic-molecule photodissociation.

Abstract
We present an a(q) (k)(s) polarization-parameter model to describe product angular momentum polarization from the one-photon photodissociation of polyatomic molecules in the molecular frame. We make the approximation that the final photofragment recoil direction is unique and described by the molecular frame polar coordinates (alpha, phi(i)), for which the axial recoil approximation is a special case (e.g., alpha=0). This approximation allows the separation of geometrical and dynamical factors, in particular, the expression of the experimental sensitivities to each of the a(q) (k)(s) in terms of the molecular frame polar angles (chi(i),phi(i)) of the transition dipole moment mu(i). This separation is applied to the linearly polarized photodissociation of polyatomic molecules (asymmetric, symmetric, and spherical top molecules are discussed) and to all dissociation mechanisms that satisfy our recoil approximation, including those with nonaxial recoil and multiple state interference, giving important insight into the geometrical properties of the photodissociation mechanism. For example, we demonstrate that the ratio of polarization parameters A(0) (k)(aniso)/A(0) (k)(iso)=beta (where beta is the spatial anisotropy parameter) is an indication that the dynamics can be explained by a single dissociative state. We also show that for asymmetric top photodissociation, the sensitivity to the a(1) (k)(s) parameters, which can arise either from single-surface or multiple-surface interference mechanisms, is nonzero only for components of the transition dipole moments within the v-d plane of the recoil frame.

Abstract
Thermal HCl and HBr molecules were photodissociated using circularly polarized 193 nm light, and the speed-dependent spin polarization of the H-atom photofragments was measured using polarized fluorescence at 121.6 nm. Both polarization components, described by the a(0)(1)(perpendicular) and Re[a(1)(1)(parallel, perpendicular)] parameters which arise from incoherent and coherent dissociation mechanisms, are measured. The values of the a(0)(1)(perpendicular) parameter, for both HCl and HBr photodissociation, are within experimental error of the predictions of both ab initio calculations and of previous measurements of the polarization of the halide cofragments. The experimental and ab initio theoretical values of the Re[a(1)(1)(parallel, perpendicular)] parameter show some disagreement, suggesting that further theoretical investigations are required. Overall, good agreement occurs despite the fact that the current experiments photodissociate molecules at 295 K, whereas previous measurements were conducted at rotational temperatures of about 15 K.

Abstract
A new variation on time of flight mass spectrometry is presented, which uses a fast framing charge coupled device camera to velocity map image multiple product masses in a single acquisition. The technique is demonstrated on two photofragmentation processes, those of CS(2) and CH(3)S(2)CH(3) (dimethyldisulfide) at a photolysis wavelength of 193 nm. In both cases, several mass fragments are imaged simultaneously, and speed distributions and anisotropy parameters are extracted that are comparable to those obtained by imaging each fragment separately in conventional velocity map imaging studies.

Abstract
Quenching of excited iodine atoms (I(5p5, 2P1/2)) by nitrogen oxides are processes of relevance to discharge-driven oxygen iodine lasers. Rate constants at ambient and elevated temperatures (293-380 K) for quenching of I(2P1/2) atoms by NO2, N2O4, and N2O have been measured using time-resolved I(2P1/2) --> I(2P3/2) 1315 nm emission. The excited atoms were generated by pulsed laser photodissociation of CF3I at 248 nm. The rate constants for I(2P1/2) quenching by NO2 and N2O were found to be independent of temperature over the range examined with average values of (2.9 +/- 0.3) x 10(-15) and (1.4 +/- 0.1) x 10(-15) cm3 s(-1), respectively. The rate constant for quenching of I(2P1/2) by N2O4 was found to be (3.5 +/- 0.5) x 10(-13) cm3 s(-1) at ambient temperature.

Abstract
In the following paper we present translational anisotropy and angular momentum polarization data for O((3)P(1)) and O((3)P(2)) products of the photodissociation of molecular oxygen at 193 nm. The data were obtained using polarized laser photodissociation coupled with resonantly enhanced multiphoton ionization and velocity-map ion imaging. Under the jet-cooled conditions employed, absorption is believed to be dominated by excitation into the Herzberg continuum. The experimental data are compared with previous experiments and theoretical calculations at this and other wavelengths. Semi-classical calculations performed by Groenenboom and van Vroonhoven [J. Chem. Phys, 2002, 116, 1965] are used to estimate the alignment parameters arising from incoherent excitation and dissociation and these are shown to agree qualitatively well with the available experimental data. Following the work of Alexander et al. [J. Chem. Phys, 2003, 118, 10566], orientation and alignment parameters arising from coherent excitation and dissociation are modelled more approximately by estimating phase differences generated subsequent to dissociation via competing adiabatic pathways leading to the same asymptotic products. These calculations lend support to the view that large values of the coherent alignment moments, but small values of the corresponding orientation moments, could arise from coherent excitation of (and subsequent dissociation via) parallel and perpendicular components of the Herzberg I, II and III transitions.
